Indesign CC ligatures turning on randomly

I'm having a problem with ligatures appearing uninvited in my Indesign CC documents. I'm an artworker and this is making me very nervous when sending out files to print. Quitting/restarting Indesign will generally resolve the problem. I haven't been able to isolate a situation that triggers this and I've experimented using different fonts, font types, etc. Sometimes I can open the same document 5 times with the ligatures appearing and on the sixth time it fixes itself.
I've trashed preferences which hasn't helped. I have turned off ligatures in the character panel with all documents closed. I've checked the paragraph styles of the documents that are exhibiting the problem and turned off ligatures in character panel, but after saving and closing the document, they reappear when I reopen. Quitting Indesign is the only way to (temporarily) resolve the issue.
I haven't run the latest update, but this problem has occurred across the last 2 or 3 Indesign CC updates. I'm using Universal Type Client 4.0.1 on OSX 10.9.4. Other people in my studio running effectively the same hardware/software are also experiencing the problem.
Any assistance most appreciated.
Adam

Hi Rick,
I've sent example files to Adobe and so they are now fully aware of the issue and can hopefully resolve it.
I had a file yesterday that was exhibiting the problem and some of the tests I did threw up some worrying behaviour. Duplicating the problem file in the same folder and opening it not only turned off the ligatures, but it also turned off the ligatures in the original problem file. I then closed the duplicate and the ligatures turned back on.
I also changed the font of the character pairs that were creating the ligature, which fixed the problem, even if it was just changing to a different weight of the same typeface. I then applied the paragraph style in use on the problem characters to a paragraph that used the same typeface and weight in another place in the document - that introduced the problem to those characters too. Problem is the ligature settings in both para styles are identical.
The other problem was when I stripped out 11 of the 12 pages from the document to send it to Adobe, including all of the HR images, the file size didn't change from 64 mb, even though the document was 1 page with 1 image in it and a few paragraphs of type.
Bottom line - if you quit Indesign and restart, I've found it will generally resolve the problem.
Good luck - hopefully you don't send a file out to be printed without noticing the ligatures have turned on.

These computers have got a damaged NVIDIA graphic which may cause unexpected restarts, kernel panics, black screens... See > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
Fortunately, Apple is repairing these computers for free, so make a backup of your data and take your MacBook Pro to an Apple Store or reseller

When did you get this firmware version?  My TBD is at 22.2 and the TBD bus is at 23.4.  I thought I had the latest firmware.

  • Turning on randomly

I have noticed this a few different times. I am sitting here watching tv in the dark and I see my Nano 4gb turn on randomly (any yes it is turned off)...is there a reason for this?

You most likely have an alarm set.
To check go to extras/clock/alarm and set it to off. Check the calendar also, extras/calendar/alarm.

  • Has anyone else experience their iPhone 5 turning off at a high percentage and turns off randomly turning back on with the red battery needing it to be plugged in?

Have had my iPhone 5 for almost a year now, love it, but lately it has been turning off randomly with percentage rates of 50% or above and when I go back to turn it back on it has the dead battery sign on the screen. I am trying to figure out if its hardware issuse or if its the battery itself. Just need suggestions on what to do? Took it in and they want me to restore it but I want to try something else before I wipe it clean.

    1)  Try This...
Close All Open Apps... Sign Out of your Account... Perform a Reset... Try again...
Reset  ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
    Release the Buttons...
    2)  Also consider Deleting any Apps you have Purchased / Downloaded but you now never use...
    3)  Make sure you have the Latest Version of iTunes (v11) Installed on your computer
    iTunes free download from www.itunes.com/download
    Then...
Connect to iTunes on the computer you usually Sync with and Restore

  • Ipod nano 6th Gen, Turning on Randomly

I bought an ipod nano red 16gb, probably 4 months ago. In the last few weeks, It keeps turning on randomly. Like i will hold the pause button and it will turn off, then in a variable amount of time, it will randomly turn on again.. What's the go?
I just watched it sitting on my computer desk turned off, and it randomly turned back on, noticing it's starting to get more frequent.
If you have any suggestions that would be very much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Adam.

The sleep button has 2 functions:
    - press the button briefly to switch the screen off and lock it
    - press the button for 3 seconds to put it into Sleep mode (this stops the music and switches the iPod off)
Have you been holding the button down too long?
Or did you spill something sticky on the iPod that got into the button?

Do you have put hard drive to sleep when possible checked? Try unchecking it.Have you tried repairing permissions in utilities? You could also do a pram reset. Command/Option/P/R keys at startup for three chimes.

  • MacBook Pro Turns off Randomly Only when logged in OSX 10.8.2

    Hi,
I have a 2010 Macbook pro with Mountain Lion 10.8.2. For a couple of weeks now, when its not plugged in to AC it turns off randomly, not at any specific battery%.
Things I have tried already that were not helpful:
    - System profiler battery: 374 cycles, Battery Status: Normal
    - SMC reset
    - Clean install of Mountain Lion without any Migraion of old System files (wanted to do this anyways before the problem arose)
    - Its does not seem to be a heating issue, has happened at low temperatures
What I have noticed is that if I either run the diagnostics at startup or enter to recovery mode, I can run the battery all the way to 0% (lasts a while) and this random swtiching off doesn't occur. It only happens when I am logged in to OSX. This makes me think its not a battery issue either.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Why does my Satellite C655D-S5300 turn off randomly after about 45 minutes to 1.5 hours

Was wondering why my laptop turns off randomly for no reason.  It does this even if no battery is connected and the AC adapter is connected.  It starts right up again if I press the power button but only lasts for an hour or so then shuts down again?  When it starts I do hear the fan going and the system works just fine until it randomly shuts down.  Upon restarting the usual windows error indicated improper shut down happened.  Could it be a bios problem or a virus?
    Solved!

    Hi Peter,
Well, I finally gave up and took it into a professional repair place who simply updated the BIOS and that solved the problem.  Runs like a champ now.  I should have checked that before taking it in...would have been a quick fix and saved
$100.  Oh well, thanks for the reply.

  • IMac's screen turns blank randomly

    Hi,
My iMac's screen turns blank randomly a few times in the past three days. It works fine after I reboost it. But, I have been keeping losing the files I am working on. Any one know what's wrong with it? Woud it be virus or malware? My mac is on OS X 10.6.8. 2.8 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 4 GB.
    Thanks a lot!

Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • Apple tv turns off randomly

    Hi there
Since about a week my Apple TV turns off randomly. Just turns off and on, but of course you have to wait until turn on again and then pick up the show/movie were you left it. Very very annoying
Any one of you have experienced that problem?
I wonder if I have to re-set everything or change the device
Thanks in advance for your input guys
    R

Did you have any change before?
Well, you may try reset and restore (to factory setting  + download latest firmware) your ATV. Of course, you need to reconfigure the box after it restarts.

  • Ipod turns on randomly

my ipod turns on randomly throughout the day/night and it drains out the battery. i even put it on hold after i turn it off, so that shouldnt be the case. i dont know if theres something i can do because i really dont want to send it back to apple cause who know how long that'll take.

Turn off Calendar alarms and Clock alarms.

  • Backlight turning off randomly

I have a late 2009 27" 2.66 iMac (latest OS and updates). Just the other day the backlight started turning off randomly (can still see screen under a light). I have corners enabled and can put the display to sleep, wake it again and the backlight turns back on, but only for a short time. And I have a second monitor plugged in with no problems on that.
I've read that it may need new hardware which I don't really want to be forking out on. I've tried the other things of reseting the PRAM and SMC with no luck.
I've tried to boot AHT to run a diagnostic but for some reason whatever I do I can't get it to run.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

It's probably a connection if it does it a lot when moving it. If it's out of warranty, you could use one of these guides to open it up and check for lose wires or connections.

  • IPhone 4 turns off randomly and refused to turn on until 10 mins or so...

My iPhone 4 originally AT&T smart phone, is what I use on T-mobile as of right now. I have had it for just about two years now and I think it's coming to its last few days. It turns off randomly throughout the day and does not turn on right away when I push either other of the button (simultaneously or one at a time), until about 5-10+ minutes or so. It is very frustrating and I really do love apple products but I don't know, something is telling me to switch to android unless a miracle happens.
    Thanks in advanced.

    Hey Tiffy6996!
I have an article here for you that describes this issue and can help you troubleshoot the issue a little further:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2802
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!
    Cheers,
    Braden
