InDesign CC slow, laggy, unusable, disaster

Just updated to CC on our Macs at work just to find out InDesign is now an utter disaster.
(And don't give me that crap like: "...it draws 4 times as many pixels as a lower resolution display...". Illustrator doesn't have this issue and the GFX cards are more than capable of handling this. So it all comes down to extremely poor programming and testing before publishing.)
We have both retina and non-retina Macs at work which are now close to unusable. You basically force us to upgrade to CC if we want retina for InDesign. However no testing of usabilty seems to have been made before publishing this. Simple things like scaling a colored box and scrolling are laggy as hell. EVERYTHING is laggy. And try setting up a small eight-page folder with pics, vectors and text... This will be even more fun when I have to make Magazines or books...
Considering the whole damn advertising industry is counting on Indesign, what the hell were you people thinking when releasing this? Everything will take almost twice as long thereby be twice as expensive for our clients. Try explaining that without loosing projects/clients...
"Myeah we will now charge you double because Adobe forced us to update their software for our state of the art Macs, so they now appear slower than our Win 95 PC..." - What the fudge? We use and depend on this single program everu single day!
Also, another minor detail: I can't seem to make my usual keyboard shortcut for "next window". Or actually I'm able to make the shortcut - it just doesn't work when hitting the keys... (CTRL+Tab).
I just can't believe you are getting away with this extremely poor update. All I can use InDesign CC for right now is opening newer files and exporting them as IDML for our CS 5.5... If our software department would release stuff like this to our clients they would have been asked to go look for a new job. You are Adobe and basically (and sadly) have a monopoly in this industry - don't screw over all your customers just because you can.
Go buy your friends at Illustrator a cup of coffee and please let them help you. You need all the help you can possibly get.
FIX IT.

Sorry, but I have to agree with Michael. When you START your first posting with these phrases...
"don't give me that crap like"
"what the hell were you people thinking "
"What the fudge"
"don't screw over all your customers"
...you're really not asking reasonable adult questions, you're venting emotion for the sake of venting.
This is a user-to-user forum. You're not addressing the people at Adobe who make decisions. You're addressing some hard working volunteers who are InDesign users like you who are trying to help other people.

  • InDesign CC slow

Why is InDesign CC working so slow? The slowest version ever. I have worked with InDesign since the

It is not open and there was only one hyperlink in the entire document. I deleted it just in case but the performance did not improve… Even when I type text it sometimes takes a second until the letters appear. Same thing when I move the cursor with the arrow keys in a text box. InDesign is my day to day business and this is killing me. Fortunately its just happening on some documents – here I think it started when i copied a (simple) vector object from Illustrator into InDesign.

Try closing the Hyperlinks panel if it is open. My program can slow to a crawl when it is open, even if there are no hyperlinks! And if you've imported text from a Word doc, you may notice that it creates all sorts of strange unrelated hyperlinks that will slow it even more.

STP 3.0.1 was the version designed to work with OSX 10.6.8. Anything earlier than that and issues may arrise. Hard to tell what yours are.
You may want to run Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager to reset the prefs back to the default state. If nothing else, it is a good troubleshooting step.

  • Slow, laggy, freezing, and looks terrible

So yesterday I updated to the most recent version of Skype for Windows desktop - primarily to fix the stupid issue where you can't change or see group chat pictures in any newly created groups.
And in the new update I find the 'new and improved' version to be incredibly slow, laggy, and occasionally freezes - to say nothing of the UI looking like pure straight unadulterated trash that takes up way too much space and looks like a giant text-messaging window on a phone. Like someone ate nothing but pale blue and white food and then vomited on a screen.
(was going to imgur link the image but I guess that's "not permitted". see attached instead.)
I guess I can only ask "why." I mean, yay, group icons work again (though they never should have broken in the first place.) Bold and italic text, yay (though now with stupid and obtrusive ads.) And now it's constantly slow to load, particularly slow to switch between chats and load history, freezes or crashes, and looks like garbage.  I'm just wondering before I go back to the old version, why this would be considered 'new' and 'updated.'
Also, nice of the site to lose this post after I had to log in prior to posting it. You know, most modern and not broken websites with a message board continue on to post the message after prompting you to log in. Sites that aren't crap, that is. Just saying~

    Coming here to rant.
I'm having all the same problems you are. It's been MONTHS since the update and they still haven't fixed any of the problems you mentioned. (I just updated. I reverted back to the old version until I got tired of messages pestering me to update) The window is slow to open after being minimized. It freezes for several seconds whenever I switch between chats. It takes forever to load messages. And more.
I can understand them sticking with the ugly interface and all that. But why can't they fix the bugs?

  • Sun VDI 3.0 patch 2 - linux guest display is laggy/unusable

    Hello.
We have setup Sun VDI 3.0 to test out ubuntu desktop images. We have it functionaly setup but the lag/redraw is unusable. For example opening, closing and moving windows around has a horrible lag and takes a second or two to redraw. Just doing an "ls" from the command line is noticeably slow. I couldn't figure out any good way to measure the visual slowness I am seeing so I hope my plain english description makes sense.
The environment is setup as follows
    Solaris 10 update 7 on x64 hardware.
Sun VDI 3.0 patch 2 (patch 1 behaved the same)
virtualbox 2.0.10 (version 2.0.8 with patch 1 behaved the same)
    Sun 7110 as storage device
Desktop Images tried on the desktop
    RedHat 5.3 (32 bit) and Ubuntu 8.04.3 (32 bit)
We installed the Sun VDI software into the all on one host demo mode. Our host is configured with 24GB of memory (24gb of swap as well per requirements). The virtualbox installs were done on the 2.0.8 version of virtualbox and then imported into the vdi solution. We ran between 2 or 3 vm's at one time so the box still had plenty of ram left since we only allocated 512MB to each vm (tried uppping that to 3GB with no perf improvements).
The Sun Ray units we tried is a stand alone 270 and 1 2FS unit. Surely i'm not the only one attempting linux desktops. I loaded up an windows XP desktop for testing purposes and it functioned great. Barely noticeable performance difference. Any ideas on what I'm missing?
    Thanks. Deet.

    Dirk.
Thanks for the input. I made the changes you mentioned and got an order of magnitude improvement! I was guilty of being a Solaris admin looking for a Solaris problem:)

  • Pages 5.2 with EndNote Plugin - Slow/laggy/delayed typing

    Pages 5.2
    OSX 10.9
    Apple Pages EndNote plugin 2.0
    EndNote 7.1
Pages documents without EndNote are fine, but using the Apple EndNote plugin after 2-3 pages with a few references typing gets extremely laggy (up to 1s per character) and seems to get worse as the document gets larger.
EndNote is 3rd party, but the plugin is developed by Apple and they direct us to Apple support.
I'm interested in seeing if anyone else using Pages 5.2 and Endnote 7.1 is experiencing anything similar? At the moment support from EndNote on this issue has not been very forthcoming.
Appreciate any comments if this is occurring for you as well, thanks.

Definitely, it's like everytime you press a key it's analysing what you are typing. I'm not sure if it is some more advanced feature which could be disabled (there were hits on something similar happening with Word on MacOSX but the tips provided to work-around this didn't apply to Pages, see here - http://community.thomsonreuters.com/t5/EndNote-General/EN-X6-is-slow-as-molasses /m-p/58770#M10513).
FYI on the different sections, I can say my experience is similar, however not as bad. For me it seemed to get worse the longer the document got. Reproducing it I could easily see from around the 2-3 page with some dummy references the lag was apparent and after 3-4 pages it got even worse.
Mine is just a college essay, barely 10 pages with around 2-5 references per page, but by the time I got to the end the lag was driving me insane. It's incredibly distracting typing out a sentance and then waiting 5-10s for it to 'appear'.
I did notice for example that when I inserted a page break at the start, and edited the title page (with no citations) that there was zero lag, but then on other pages which had no citations (abstract) there was still lag. I also found it seemed to especially kick in when spell-checking or attempting to auto-correct words, it would change a slightly incorrect word to something complete garbage (and I think this is part of whatever EndNote is doing I never noticed the Pages spellchecker to be so dysfunctional before).
Well, we'll see how TR goes. I'm not quite sure if they are actually fixing the issue or just trying to fob me off, I've asked some more direct questions to try and get an indication of if they have actually identified the issue or not. I found it so easy to reproduce without (what I think) any 'custom' thing on my laptop being an issue that hopefully they were able to reproduce just as easily and can investigate a fix.
Here's hoping they find a fix before I have to write another essay :-)
I will update if TR comes back with anything concrete.
And in the mean time if anyone else is facing this same issue please let us know :-)

  • [CS5 Win] Switching to InDesign is slow in CS5 for certain documents. XML links?

    Hi,
I put this question in the scripting part, since you might be the ones to notice such things as this, and it might relate to importing XML by scripting. Also I got no positive response in one of the other forums, "complaining" about the sluggish performance redrawing the interface when setting focus to InDesign CS5. But now I can more clearly see that it is not slow for all documents.
Having certain documents open in InDesign CS5 makes it very slow to switch to. The CPU peaks at 80-100% and it takes about a second or two until InDesign responds.
The documents do not necessarily need to be large in size, but it appears that it mostly occurrs on documents that I've imported data to (or that our customers have), using our own code, which takes care of an XML file and portions it out into templates.
One strange thing I just noticed was that selecting "relink all" by alt-clicking the relink button in the Links palette, makes InDesign look for (presumalbly) previously imported XML files. How can that be?
I never store any links to the imported XML - as far as I know. Where should I look for that kind of links?
How and why would previously imported XML file paths be stored? I just import the XML into the structure, "deal with it", and deletes the node that it was imported to. (The data is left in a structure that I build up myself.)
Does anyone know if there is a change related to any of the facts stated above, in InDesign CS5?
I'll attach a screen shot of the links dialogue (above), when it "looks for" an XML file. Could this kind of "missing file" cause the abovementioned "slowness" every time switching to InDesign from another application?
(InDesign documents that don't relate to XML doesn't make switching to InDesign slow - but it gets slow when such a document is loaded, even under a tab that is not in focus.)
    Best regards,
    Andreas

I've uploaded a video to demonstrate that InDesign sometimes can keep references to links:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoQOSIlfYl4
It's obvious that there are thousands of "orphans" in the documents. All XML files ever imported are kept in some way... The links (or the names of them) are obviously not removed from the document when deleting the Element in the XML Structure. Since the communication of the code with a database is built around XML import, the number of imported files is very large.
Can these orphaned link references somehow be removed? When manually checking for missing files, InDesign loops though all of the XML files as seen in the YouTube video above, but ends up saying that there are no missing files. The next time I do the same check, all links are looped through again.
Perhaps we should "link to file", using .xmlImportPreferences.createLinkToXML = true
This propery has not been explicitly set, and therfore = false. But is there any way to get rid of all the old link names that's inside the document somehow?
CS4 does the same thing, but there is "no 2 second lag time" switching from another application to InDesign CS4 with this kind of document open.

  • InDesign CC slow performance.

    Hi Folks,
    My customer has the following:
    MacPro5,1
    Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2.8ghz
    8 Gig Ram.
    Running InDesign CC 9.1
    He's having the following issues.
You can add that importing photos takes twice as long as it used to.
Scrolling through the document seems to be much more difficult.
    Delays and pauses when scrolling.
Text is drawing inside boxes very slowly.
    Manipulating Images is very slow.
I've looked at numerous forums with users having similiar problems with InDesign CC and there doesn't seem to be a lot of Adobe Support on this issue.  This is a production enviroment with several designers using this application some of the designers have switched back to InDesign 6 to avoid these issues because none of these issues are present in InDesign 6.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Todd

Unfortunately No. It seems this is still an on going issue with several machines. I've contacted Adobe support and I get the run around. Explaining to me that the support team for this isn't open yet, or someone will call me back, or this has been escalated to tier 2 support. Still no call backs or anything on this problem.
I'd venture to say at this point Adobe doesn't care about it's current customers, only about generating new ones.

  • Indesign CS5 Slow Scrolling

    Hello
I'm currently being affected by a slow scrolling bug in InDesign CS5 where no matter what my scroll settings are the speed is constantly slow. Is there an override in InDesign somewhere to fix this?
This was also present in CS4 but not quite as bad and have also seen other posts in Ps forums.
Using Windows 7 and logitech mouse
    Thanks
    Nathaniel

Could you be more specific about this slow scrolling, and what settings are not making a difference?

I recently came home from vacation a few weeks ago. Mac was powered down for 5 days. Started up machine and noticed a lag whenever I clicked on a web page. Page starts to load, there is a 10-15 second delay, then the rest of the page loads. It was extremely noticeable on youtube. Every action in safari or firefox was slow. Loading multiple youtube videos in different tabs was never a problem, now there is problems with videos loading extremely slow. Loading one video is nearly impossible. Web pages will load normal on one try, then a second later, you click to go to another page, extreme lag. Attempting to load flash style videos, lag when starting, bar on videos will load 1%, then lag for 10-15 seconds, then start loading the video's.
I got fed up and ended up updating to Mountain Lion after about a week. Along with using onyx to clean everything up. Installed Mountain Lion, speed seemed to return to 75% normal speed (original speed before problem developed). Lags were slightly there, but for the most part everything seemed good. A day or two later lag was back. Web pages are slow or laggy to load, videos inparticular.  Sometimes I have to refresh pages because they stop loading halfway through.
Called my ISP they walked me through a bunch of tests and said the speed of the connection is fine, that it must be the computer. I pulled out an old Macbook I had (OS X 10.4) and there is no lag like on my iMac. There is no lag to start the loading of a video, then it starts, then the 10-15 lag, then continuing to load it.
Network set up is a motorola mstatea, apple airport express with airtunes, and an at+t microcell. mac is connected via airport to the wireless network. lag is still present with direct ethernet connection to modem.
One of the main uses of this machine is listening to multiple youtube videos during my work day. I used to be able to put a few in a queue, let them play. I now have to get up and go to the computer on every new video, to pause the playing of the video while it buffers and deal with the lag.
What can I do to fix this??

Hi, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    10.4 instructions...
Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.

  • Adobe InDesign CC slow to initialise after machine restart

I am finding that InDesign CC is extremely slow to launch after I restart my iMac (takes around 2 minutes). Once it has been launched once it then launches far more quickly (around 20sec). If I log out then back in it still only takes around 20secs to launch. But as soon as I restart my machine the first launch takes around 2 minutes again.
I am assuming that InDesign is copying items to a temporary location (outside of my user space) that is getting reset at restart. My question is, is this a known behaviour, if so can it be got around (something like identifying the temporary files and copying them to the correct temporary location at login)?

I've upgraded from the CS4 Suite to CS5. InDesign is almost impossible to use, the screen redraw is painfully slow. Much slower than CS4, which was instantaneous. Anyone at Adobe want to clue us in to what's going on? And yes, Live Update is off. This is an awful step backwards.

  • Indesign 2 slows down to a snail's pace after 10-15 min. Help!

I have used Indesign with Creative Suite 2 Premium for a few years with no problems. About 6 months ago I bought an external hard drive to use as a back up device for my hard drive. Not long after that I had problems with my computer and figured out that the external drive was causing a problem with startup of the hard disk. So now I leave it turned off except for times when I want to back up files. I give that history because that's the only problems I've had. A few months ago I had the same thing happen with Indesign slowing down after use. I've tried having it as the only program running. I've tried only using it after startup. Nothings seems to make a difference. I have to reboot the computer to get it to be functional for about 10-15 min. All other programs on my computer are running normally including Illustrator and Photoshop. Should I just upgrade? Uninstall & reinstall? I don't know much about changing my system settings or the super technical stuff. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

There are a lot of things that can cause slowdowns.
Disable Version Cue if you don't use it, for starters. Then look at the hard drive. How much free space do you have? Empty the recycle bin and the temp folders, and defrag.
Run virus and spyware scans. You might be surprised by what's running without your permission and using system resources.

  • Ridiculously slow and unusable Broadband / BTVisio...

I am getting a problem every night this week (4 days so far) where my broadband is unusably slow.
This effects Broadband/On Demand TV/Hub Phones
Broadband and Vision on Demand TV all fine during the day.
    BUT
at the Hours 9pm-1030pm it all goes to pot.
Cannot watch ANY on demand TV - just gets v04 timout message
Broadband is unuseable - pages take 4-5 mins to load
    cannot stream media AT ALL
hub phones are rendered unuseable too
its not even possable to run the speedtester.com software as it times out each time
after about 11pm if you try again it runs everything perfectly.
    so ...
    Whats happening between 9pm and 11pm ?
    Whos causing it ?
how is this going to be fixed asap.?
BTW im on the Perranporth , Cornwall Exchange
i have reported to BT each evening, for the past 3 evenings but still the issue persists
I hope somone can help soon.

The VP stands for Virtual Path. A hot VP means that the exchange is facing capacity issues within the exchange, this in turn gives you a poor download speed is probably the simplest way to put it.
To get this raised as a fault you must complete a test on the BT speedtester site and the test usually needs to comeback as failed before they seem to take these kind of issues on board. In your case you need the speedtest result between 9-11pm
This doesn't always affect all users on the exchange, sometimes it can only affect certian users and this usually happens during peak times. When this is happening the VP is usually not running hot but it would be running close to it, I think BT Wholesale class that as amber if my memory serves me correct.

  • Indesign extremly slow (Mac Pro)

    Hi all,
my InDesign is very slow since i have updated from CS 4 to CS 5.5.
It seems to be pretty slow when i place some PDF into the .indd.
Also in low-quality settings it was incredibly slow and the cpu-usage
was far over 100%. How can this be?
I have tested the System in 32 and 64bit-mode.
    System specs:
    Adobe CS 5.5 (latest updates)
    Mac Pro 3,1
    Dual-Quadcore 3 Ghz
    10 GB Ram
    NVIDIA Geforce 8800 GT
    OS X 10.6.8 (latest upates)
I hope there is a solution.
InDesign is also pretty slow on my PC.
    i5-3570K
    DD3-2133MHz
    Ati HD-7950
    edit:
I have changed one settings now in InDesign.
While moving an object i cant see the content now
in real-time. This is a performance gain.
But i still wonder how bad the InDesign-engine is.
While my computer is able to render a complex
3D-scene in an amazing fps-count, InDesign
has huge cpu-load with some flat 2d stuff.
