Indesign cc14 - quotation marks won't change to regular.

My quotation marks won't change to regular marks
my document has french quotation marks : << >>
and i need the regular ones. " "
i already checked the preferences / dictionary, but they're already set to regular.

Language is assigned to text at the character level. Dictionary prefs affect the dictionary to be used when a particular language is assigned.
You can see the language assigned to text either in the dropdown at the bottom of the Character panel, it's analog in the Control panel when in text mode, or in the definition dialogs for the styles applied to selected text.

  • InDesign CS4 quotation marks problems in epub

    I use InDesign CS4 to create epub files.  Occassionally I will have what I guess you would call a translation error from the InDesign file to the epub file.  Quotation marks and apostrophe marks do not translate at all.  It doesn't happen with every file.  If I combine the bad export file with another file the quotation marks will be just fine.  I have even tried inserting a special character from the Type menu and it does the same thing.
    Example:
    How it shows in the InDesign file -
    You’re a fool, Grey.
    "Miss Steele. What a pleasant surprise."
    How it shows up in the epub file:
    You’re a fool, Grey.
    “Miss Steele. What a pleasant surprise.”
    Does anyone have any suggestions to keep this from happening?

    My suggestion is to upgrade to CS5.5. The epub capabilities are light years ahead of CS4.
    That said, where are you seeing the problem? ADE? iPad? Kindle?

  • [CS3][JS] find/change quotation marks to typographer quotes

    my document contains a lot of quotation marks but they are not typographic (the opening one and the closing one are similar (") i want them to be typographic. I tried this script and it doesn't work.
    var myDoc = app.activeDocument;
    app.findGlyphPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing;
    app.changeGlyphPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing;
    app.findGlyphPreferences.appliedFont = app.fonts.item("Times New Roman  Regular");
    app.findGlyphPreferences.glyphID = 5;
    var myFoundItems = myDoc.findGlyph();
    app.changeGlyphPreferences.appliedFont = app.fonts.item("Times New Roman  Regular");
    var r=0;
    for(i=0;i<myFoundItems.length;i++){
      app.changeGlyphPreferences.glyphID = 179;
        myFoundItems(r).changeGlyph();
    app.changeGlyphPreferences.glyphID = 180;
        myFoundItems(r+1).changeGlyph();
        r+=2;

    Hi Peter,
    your solution is pretty good while the pairs of quotes are complete and you only use one sort of typographer quotes.
    But what if once the final quote is missing?
    Or if you want to use different language sensitive quotes for a document with multilingual text?
    Another approach is to take use of the execution of typographer quotes of InDesign itself.
    First you will have to activate typographer quotes:
    app.activeDocument.textPreferences.typographersQuotes = true;
    If you now change " with " you will get ".
    That's not what you have been looking for. ;-)
    You first have to make all non-typographical quotes to one specific typographical quote (right or wrong) or a placeholder. And than you have to change the specific typographical quotes to the non-typographical quotes (sic!). After that you will find your language-sensitive quotes.
    Here is an example.
    var myDoc = app.activeDocument;
    var myRange = (app.selection.length == 1 )
    ? app.selection[0]
    : myDoc;
    myDoc.textPreferences.typographersQuotes = true;
    app.findGrepPreferences = app.changeGrepPreferences = null;
    app.findGrepPreferences.appliedFont = myDoc.paragraphStyles[1].appliedFont.fullName;
    theChangeGrep ( '\[\\x{0027}\\x{2019}\\x{201A}\\x{2039}\\x{203A}\]', '\\x{2018}' );
    theChangeGrep ( '\[\\x{0022}\\x{201D}\\x{201E}\\x{00AB}\\x{00BB}\]', '\\x{201C}' );
    theChangeGrep ( '\\x{2018}', '\\x{0027}' );
    theChangeGrep ( '\\x{201C}', '\\x{0022}' );
    function theChangeGrep ( f, c)
    app.findGrepPreferences.findWhat = f;
    app.changeGrepPreferences.changeTo = c;
    myRange.changeGrep();
    It takes some more search executions, that's true.
    But it's language sensitive! ;-)
    After all, apostrophes () will disturb the changing also in this approach, because they are not recognized as apostrophes but as single typographical quotes.
    To prevent from this I am still looking for a solution.

  • Change the settings for "Double left quotation Marks"

    Hi,
    I'm a newbie to Scripting in Indesign. Can you name me wich properties I have to change (and the values) for the double and single left quotation marks to set the strait one's.
    CS or CS3 please - VB or JS is ok.
    Thankx
    Frank

    Hi Frank
    1. To change it manually you have to deselect the following option:
    Edit>Preferences>Type> Use Typographer's Quotes.
    2. To access the option through vb script use the following syntax:
    Document.TextPreference.TypographersQuotes
    May be this will help you.

  • InDesign CS4 ignores quotation mark settings in document

    Hello,
    I have the following problem: Despite setting 'dynamic' quotation marks in the Dictionary setting, InDesign just gives me apostrophes instead of left and right quotation marks. This is document dependent, in the next document of the book, it works perfectly.
    This drives me nuts. I can't find any buttons or menu entries to change/reset this.
    Any suggestions!
    Thank you very much.
    Till

    "'Dynamic' quotation marks" in the dictionary? I would have to look that one up. The only place I know that changes the curly quote settings is in Preferences.
    This is a document setting, but it does not change any existing curly or straight quotes! It only influences freshly entered ones. There is a default hot key that toggles this setting immediately, but I keep on forgetting what it was (check the Keyboard Shortcuts list for that). I do know it's somewhere near show/hide grids
    Oddly enough, ID acts too smart when trying to replace straight quotes ^' with curly ones ' [*] (with the Curly setting on). Somehow it's convinced it doesn't need to change those. A trick is to first replace straight quotes with something unqiue: [!quote!] and then change this to plain '.
    [*] A single or double straight quote character in Replace will be replaced with the correct opening/closing curly one. Or, rather, 'less thou art typesetting something Shakespearian.

  • Getting Quotation Marks to look like they were mirrored. In GREP or Regular find and change

    Hello,
    Is there anyway to make quotation marks come out like this image below.
    Right now I have 2 text boxes to make it work, as I cannot get the first double quote to look like a mirrored version of the right double quote ;-(
    This is what it needs to look like.
    Thanks,

    Little bits do not count for as much as great big bits, and it is rule-worship to assume that they do. There is no proportionality in grouping very different sorts of violation together as if they were all in the same league of criminality. Picking up a dime someone has dropped in the street is completely different from breaking into someone's house and stealing a large quantity of money.
    You'd have a fit if you found out I was using a logo you designed, without permission, and was making money from publishing it. Suppose I hacked into your system and copied your last completed job and handed it to your client before you could deliver and bill them? Would you be upset if they went ahead and used your work and didn't bother to pay you because, after all, there was no 'property' involved and they have what they need without cost?
    Yes, I would regard that as a serious legal offense, and would follow it up with the full rigors of the law. But it is not "theft" in the proper sense of the word, in my opinion, because an idea (design, logo, etc.) is a type rather than a physical token. Its authorship must be protected, its origination acknowledged, monetarily rewarded, and all that, but the idea that it has an "owner" is the product of philosophical and logical confusion.
    Human tend to over-extend the concept of ownership to all sorts of things that cannot legitimately be owned, such as other people. Even nowadays, following the abolition of slavery, many people consider themselves the owners of their spouses, children, employees, pets, etc..

    PS: Forgot to add that I have paid for Sgt. Pepper four times already -- in mono vinyl, stereo vinyl, tape cassette, and CD. Don't you think it's time we all deserved an "upgrade"?

  • ME edition - quotation marks after LTR words

    I am working on a right-to-left document. In the document, in some places there are left-to-right words. Sometimes there are quotation marks after the LTR words that are supposed to be on the left of the LTR words because they would be (for example) at the end of a sentence. The problem is, that because it's a RTL document, so after the LTR words, InDesign places those quotation marks to the right of the LTR word.
    How can I be sure that throughout the document, the right sided quotation marks will always be on the correct side of my text (in the case, to the left of the words [since I'm using a RTL language])? Is there a GREP find/change I could do for this?
    Thank you.

    Changing the font does not make a difference.
    I'll paste the problem in ashby going to Times new roman on the next line (It's a knitting pattern):
    heel flap
    Turn work so WS of heel is facing.
    Weird. It does not show when I copy/paste it. It prints when I print. It shows up on my screen. Other ideas?

  • Crop marks won't print

    I’ve only run into this with one client. He sends me individual epses, each one a business card to print. When I open them in Illustrator it looks like there are crop marks and bleed, when I place in InDesign, as I always do, to set 8 up on a page the bleed won’t print and the crop marks won’t print.  I can enlarge the object box and see the bleed and crop marks but they still wont print. If I print directly from Illustrator just to test it, it will print the bleed but still no crop marks. This is all in CS3 but was the same when I had CS2.

    I always prefer to use trim marks (crop marks as opposed to crop area) and fit the artboard to them.
    I'm with you, Steve. I did it that way for years mainly because it left no room for ambiguity (and because that's what made sense to those of us who used to paste layout elements down on artboards with rubber cement).
    Unfortunately, over the last few versions, Adobe seems to have been changing the paradigm on us. I've seen an attempt to bring Illustrator in line with the DTP way of doing things -- Quark, Pagemaker, and InDesign have always equated artboard size with document trim size. The change in Illustrator terminology (no more reference to "trim marks"), I think, was the first clue that this was happening.
    In th U.S., more and more magazines (even as their numbers dwindle) are now accepting print ad layouts done in Illustrator (whereas they used to insist they be done exclusively in QuarkXpress). Those that do, however, are insisting that the document (artboard) size correspond to their trim size.
    OK, fine. But I don't have to like it.

  • Apstrophes and quotation marks

    I have a text containing dialogue with a large number of word-initial apostrophes to indicate dropped h's (e.g. I 'ope, 'e 'as, etc). Because it's dialogue, there are also a large number of quotation marks and I want to use typographer's quotes. Is there a way of doing this without InDesign (CS5) automatically converting the apostrophes to opening single quotes.
    Thanks for any advice,
    Piers

    Thanks Jongware and Peter. Used the Grep solution to do the bulk of it and then went through the text and manually changed back any opening quotes that had been incorrectly converted to apostrophes. The text was imported from a Word document. I feel the need for some kind of 'hard' apostrophe that never gets changed by smart quotes!
    Thanks again for your help,
    Piers

  • Why does Pages not support French quotation marks?

    Hello,
    I've got the following problem:
    I like using Pages to write my texts. But unfortunately *Pages doesn't support French quotation marks, e.g. « Example. »* what Microsoft Office supports since years. Pages does know the other quotation marks „Example.“.
    An other particularity of French quotation marks is, that there is a special space between the quotation marks and the word required; those are called "espaces insécables" (indivisible spaces?) which word inserts automatically.
    The same problem exists with other special marks (i.e. "?", "!", ";" and ":"), which require an "espace insécable".
    This is just a killer-problem, when writing a paper, which is important. So I can't really use Pages and do have to use Word...
    Can anyone help me?
    I hope this will be fixed in the next version of iWork!
    Thanks a lot.

    I found a reference to the non-breaking space being alt+(space). I think it should work, but I'm surprised that it does when documents are imported from Word.
    I've looked for that on the swiss-french keyboard layout. In fact, it is shift + alt + space. But, as I already remarqued, this doesn't really help, because Pages obviously doesn't know how to treat those spaces, that is to say that there won't be any difference if you do a non-breaking space or a normal space...

    There are two models for supporting this, either you do it in the application (Microsoft) or you do it in the font file (Apple). There are further implications depending on whether you change the content of the character stream or the content of the glyph stream.
    The principle of is to preserve plain text as plain as at all possible. The more one manipulates plain text, the less possible it becomes to search plain text since search systems have to include private synonyms that ignore this or presuppose that.
    Apple's original idea was to do as much as possible in 'glyph space' / 'data space' in order to leave 'character space' / 'code space' in the font file as plain as possible. Finite state machines in Apple TrueType 2 are able to do the type of thing you are asking for, but at this point there is no TrueType 2 font file with these features.
    You may be right, I don't really know it. There must be another solution.
    Nevertheless, this problem has to be fixed by our little friends in Cupertino... I would like Page to work how I expect it to do that...
    Well, thanks a lot for all.

    Based on your description, it should be an encoding problem, have you tried to change the encoding as 'UTF-8' ?

  • Quotation marks appearing as left or right arrows, does anyone know what is causing this?

    Hi there we are using Indesign 2014, I am not sure if that has anything to do with this or not, but certain paragraphs in a document have a bug, where by when you type in a quotation mark (') a left or right arrow appears. We have found that if we clear the paragraph styling this disappears and the quotation marks work fine again. It is worth noting that these paragraphs did not have any paragraph styles applied to them, but they were pasted in from MS Word. Has anyone else experienced this issue and do you know where it comes from?

    Ok thanks for enlightening me. We checked all the language settings on our workstations and they seem to be all set up as English UK and smart quotes are set to be used. I am not sure how to check the language assigned to a paragraph, as I say, there is not paragraph style applied to this text… Can you please let me know how to check this?
    The more I think about it, the more I think it is some sort of styling that has come in from MS Word. I thought InDesign was pretty good at stripping out anything like this.

  • Quotation marks and apostophes reversed

    When editing text, I'm getting reversed quotation marks and apostophes if they are added to preexisting test. Quotation mark added to the end of a sentence that was already in the document will be pointed the wrong way. Erasing the last letter and retyping it with the quotation mark will perform correctly.
    The same happens when placing an apostophe on preexisting text.
    This happens in AppleWorks, TextEdit, and Tex-Edit Plus. This does NOT happen in Pages or InDesign. It only happens on one of my computers.
    Any ideas?

    Hello
    This may be due to a corruption of preferences files dedicated to the named applications.
    Try to trash these preferences files.
    It may also be due to corruption of some documents but I assumes that if it was specific to only some docs you had wrote this detail.
    Some system preferences may be corrupted too but I assumes that if one of them is corrupted, the corruption would strike on every applications on a single computer.

  • Type tool quotation marks display like greater-than symbols

    I'm having trouble with getting quotation marks to display correctly, they look like 2 stacked >> symbols.  They change slightly depending on what font I'm using, but they all ride at the base of the text.  I cannot acheive normal looking curly or staight quotes at all.  I have tried switching smart quotes on and off in the preferences, restarting, etc.  I've noticed this problem in the past, but I thought it was the font I was using.  The same thing happens with Times New Roman.  I'm running an up to date version of PSextended CS5, 64bit on win 7 64.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Not sure if this is where you looked, but check the overall Windows settings as follows:
    Click Start and type Language in the search box.  When Region and Language comes up, click it.
    Look through all the tabs to ensure everything's set as expected.
    Outside of finding something unexpected in there, it's never a bad idea to try resetting the Character tool, or even the Photoshop overall preferences.  To reset the Type Tool, select the T tool, then right-click in the T tool icon in the options area:
