InDesign Color Management with BW photos

I am ready to send a book to print. It includes many high resolution BW photos. The photos are Greyscale PSDs (provided to me on disc) and are linked to the document. When I go to package it it says that CMS is on and it is in CMYK mode. There is no greyscale option, so do I A)Leave it the way it is? B) turn off the CMS? and if so, C) do I need to turn of the CMS on each photo individually or just in the document? D) none of the above?
I am on a deadline with this so any help would be fantastic. Thanks.

>Does that affect the way the images will print?
Yes, I think so, but I'm not an expert on how, exactly grayscale works in ID.
I always have color management enabled, and I use the CMYK profile for my working space that matches the press condition. I see reports that InDesign prints grayscale either darker or lighter than the same image from Photoshop, but I've never had results that I considered unacceptable. I usually use a dot gain profile of 20 or 30% when converting to grayscale, depending on if the paper will be coated or not. It's better to err, in my opinion, slightly on the light side in doing the conversions, too. Things tend to darken up on press.
If you're lucky, Gerald Singlemann may wander by with better information.

  • Resolving color management with Epson printer

I continually struggle with color when printing scanned images or images off of a camera card into PhotoShop and/or InDesign, and with the warning messages (upon opening) for tagged or untagged photos,
Are the dialog box choices regarding printing choices for newer versions of PS and ID more user-friendly regarding color management choices, hence I would be better off upgrading strictly for that purpose?
    I'm using a PowerBook,
Step 1 instructions from a post in this forum suggest calibration first.
i have calibrated my monitor. I have a name for the calibrated color settings and can call them up in Color Settings before I open the photo in Color.
step 2 advice in an earlier post reads :
dont apply double profiling, let the application, Photoshop Cs in my case, handle the colour management and make sure no colour adjustment is checked in the printer driver, this is located in the colour management section of a drop down menu.
this advice, step 2, is hard to follow because I do not know which phrase/choices in the dialog boxes refer to letting the SOFTWARE handle the printing and which refer to letting the PRINTER handle the printing. Either workflow would work fine. The Epson has wonderful capabilities when I get it managed correctly.
I have repeatedly tried to use a workflow by Ballard but can't interpret the advice similar to "step 2" above in tandem with the opening choices for untagged photos.
A single workflow would be great, but I need a solution that works no matter what the source of my photo (scanner, camera card being the most frequently used, I use an Olympus digital and a Casio digital).
Thanks for any advice. Right now I'd just like to hit my printer with a rock, but I doubt that would solve anything.

Please follow g ballards advice. You must understand first before you click. You NEVER USE the monitor profile except for the monitor itself. Hopefully you calibrated your monitor with an actual calibrator, which one was it?
The Epson will give you what you need and want if you actually know what you're doing.
There's a lot to understand, but it will become second nature once you follow the steps.
It appears that you don't understand calibration, color spaces, profiles, rendering intent, device dependence, and output.
You haven't given any system specs. Why are you using Indesign 3 and PS 8? Where is PS 10?

  • Confused about Color Management in CS5 (Photos appearing differently in all other programs)

I recently noticed this and it's been driving me crazy; when I view photos in Photoshop CS5 they appear significantly lighter/more washed out than when viewed in other programs like Zoombrowser, Digital Photo Professional or just in a regular Windows folder using Filmstrip mode (Windows XP).  When opening the same photo in both CS5 and Zoombrowser and switching back and forth between the two windows the difference is very apparent...for example, one of the photos I compared was of a person in a black shirt -- in CS5 (lighter/washed out) the folds in the shirt were very obvious, but in Zoombrowser (darker, more contrast/saturation) the folds were nearly invisible and it looked like just solid black.  Now, after messing around with the settings in both Photoshop and in Zoombrowser I've found a few ways to get the photos to look the same in the two programs; one way gives them both the lighter/more washed out appearance and another way gives them both the darker appearance with more contrast and saturation.  My problem is that I'm not sure which view is accurate.
I use a NEC MultiSync LCD1990SXi monitor with SpectraView II calibration software and calibrate it every 2 weeks using these calibration settings (screenshot): http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/8826/settingsx.jpg
In the SpectraView II Software under Preferences there's an option that says "Set as Windows Color Management System Monitor Profile - Automatically selects and associates the generated ICC monitor profile with the Color Management System (CMS)."  This option is checked.  Also, when I open the Windows' Color Management window there's only one option displayed, which is "LCD1990SXi #######" (the ####### represents my monitor's serial number).
I assume the above settings are all correct so far, but I'm not sure about the rest.
Here are my current default Color Settings in CS5 (screenshot): http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/666/photoshopcolorsettings.jpg
Changing these settings around doesn't seem to make the photo appear much different.  However, when I go to Edit -> Assign Profile, then click off of "Working RGB: sRGB IEC61966-2.1" and instead click Profile and select "LCD1990SXi ####### 2011-06-21 18-30 D65 2.20" from the drop-down menu, the picture becomes darker with more contrast and saturation and matches the picture in Zoombrowser.  Also, if I select "Adobe RGB (1998)" from the drop-down menu it's very similar in terms of increased darkness and contrast but the saturation is higher than with the LCD1990SXi setting.  Another way I've found to make the image equally dark with increased contrast and saturation is to go to View -> Proof Setup -> Custom and then click the drop-down menu next to "Device to Simulate" and select "LCD1990SXi ####### 2011-06-21 18-30 D65 2.20" again.
Alternatively, to make both images equally light and washed out I can go to Zoombrowser -> Tools -> Preferences and check the box next to "Color Management: Adjust colors of images using monitor profile."  This makes the image in Zoombrowser appear just like it does in CS5 by default.
Like I said, I'm confused as to which setting is the accurate one (I'm new to Color Management in general so I apologize for my ignorance on the subject).
It would seem that assigning the LCD1990SXi profile in CS5 would be the correct choice in order to match the monitor calibration given the name of the profile but the "Adjust colors of images using monitor profile" option in Zoombrowser sounds like it would do the same thing as well.  Also, I've read that Photoshop is a color managed software whereas Zoombrowser and Windows Picture and Fax Viewer are not which makes me think that maybe the lighter/washed out version seen in Photoshop is correct.  So which version (light or dark) is the accurate one that I should use to view and edit my photos?  Thanks in advance for any help or info.

    Sorry for the late reply;
But before we go there or make any assumptions, it's important for
you to determine whether you're seeing consistent color in your
color-managed applications and only inconsistent color in those that are
not color-managed.  For that you'll need to do a little research to see
if the applications in which you're seeing darker colors have
color-management capability (and whether it is enabled).
I opened the same picture in 7 different applications and found that the 6 of the 7 displayed the photo equally dark with equally high contrast when compared to the 7th application (CS5).  The other 6 applications were Zoombrowser EX, Digital Photo Professional, Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, Quicktime PictureViewer, Microsoft Office Picture Manager and Firefox.
However, at least two of these programs offer color management preferences and, when used, display the photo (from what I can tell) exactly the same as Photoshop CS5's default settings.  The two programs are two Canon programs: Zoombrowser EX and Digital Photo Professional.  Here's the setting that needs to be selected in Zoombrowser in order to match up with CS5 (circled in red):
And here's the setting in Digital Photo Professional that needs to be selected in order to match up with CS5 (again, circled in red):
*Note: When the option above "Monitor Profile" is selected ("Use the OS settings") the image is displayed exactly the same as when the monitor profile is selected.  It's only when sRGB is selected that it goes back to the default darker, more contrasty version.
So with the red-circled options selected, all three programs (CS5, ZB, DPP) display the images the same way; lighter and more washed out.  What I'm still having trouble understanding is if that ligher, more washed out display is the accurate one or not...I've read several tutorials for all three programs which only make things more confusing.  One of the tutorials says to always use sRGB if you want accurate results and *never* to use Monitor Profile and another says that, if you're using a calibrated monitor, you should always select Monitor Profile under the color management settings...so I'm still lost, unfortunately.
What I also don't understand is why, when the monitor profile is selected in CS5, the image is displayed in the dark and contrasty way that the other programs display it as by default but when the monitor profile is selected in Digitial Photo Professional it displays it in the lighter, more washed out way that CS5 displays it using CS5's default settings (sRGB).  Why would selecting the monitor profile in DPP display the photo the same way as when sRGB is selected in Photoshop?  And vice versa...why would selecting the monitor profile in Photoshop display the photo the same way as when sRGB is selected in DPP?
I feel like I'm missing something obvious here...which I probably am.  Again, I'm very new to this stuff so pardon my ignorance on the topic.
By the way, I find that the way that the non-color managed programs (Windows Picture and Fax Viewer et al.) display the photos is more aesthetically pleasing to the eye than the duller, more washed out display that CS5 gives the photos, but ultimately what I want to see in these programs (especially PS5 where I'll be doing the editing) is the accurate representation of the actual photo itself...i.e. what it's supposed to look like and not a darker (or lighter) variant of it.
So just to reiterate my questions:
Why does selecting Monitor Profile under the color management settings in DPP give the same display results as the default sRGB profile in CS5 and vice versa?  (CS5 with monitor profile selected having the same display results as DPP with the sRGB profile selected)
When using CS5 with it's default color management settings (sRGB), using DPP with the Monitor Profile selected, and using Zoombrowser EX with "Adjust color of images using monitor profile" selected this results in all three programs displaying the same lighter, washed-out images...is this lighter, more washed-out display of the images shown in these three programs the accurate one?
I noticed when opening an image in Firefox it had the same darker, contrasty look as the other non-color managed applications had.  Assuming that the CS5 default settings are accurate, does this mean that if I edit a photo in CS5, save it, and upload it to the internet that other people who are viewing that image online will see it differently than how it's supposed to look (i.e. in a non-color-managed way?)  If so, this would seem to indicate that they'd see a less-than-flattering version of the photo since if their browser naturally displays images as darker and more contrasty and I added more darkness and contrast to the image in CS5, they'd be seeing a version of the photo that's far too dark and probably wouldn't look very good.  Is this something I have to worry about as well?
I apologize for the lengthy post; I do tend to be a bit OCD about these things...it's a habit I picked up once I realized I'd been improperly editing photos on an  incorrectly calibrated monitor for years and all that time and effort had been spent editing photos in a certain way that looked good on my incorrectly calibrated monitor but looked like crap on everyone else's screen, so the length and detail of this post comes from a desire to not repeat similar mistakes by editing photos the wrong way all over again.  Again, thanks in advance for all the help, it's greatly appreciated!

  • InDesign color management workflow help

    Hello,
I recently had to create a 60 page color booklet for a University on a very tight schedule. The booklet was to be printed to press. I was not given any specifics as to the output specifics.
So, I was creating vector graphics in Illustrator as CMYK, and importing them in InDesign. And receieving e-mail with bitmat images in formats from JPG, TIFF, PDF, PNG. and I would place them directly into InDesign. If I had to do any photoshoping of a picture, I would conver the sRGB original to CMYK.
I have been reading discussion about color management workflow. But I am still not clear what I should have been doing with the roughly 100 image files sent me to be in the booklet?
Somewhere I read the way I did it was okay, as long as I let InDesign handle image conversion on the output? Is this correct? When I went to make my Package for the printer, I did get the Triangle "warning" that some images were sRGB. The PDFs looked great.
What should I have done as all these images came in? It was a crazy deadline. I can't imagine having to open every image in Photoshop -Convert to CMYK-Adjust colors and resave and import?
And what do you do if you don't know the specific output printer? I default to SWOP.
So, will InDesign, convert any incorrect (sRGB etc) images on the final output to the proper colorspace to be printed properly?
    Thanks
    Robin

InDesign will convert RGB to CMYK when you're exporting as PDF files IF (big IF) you choose PDF/X-1a as your PDF preset. Some of the other PDF presets (e.g., Press Quality) don't do this conversion. Their color conversion setting is No Conversion.
SWOP is a reasonable output assuming your printer didn't give you a customized CMYK profile to install with instructions to install it (most North American printers don't do this).

  • PE7 Color Management with a Non Postscript Printer

    Hello,
I have an Epson Stylus Photo R800 and images are coming out quite dark, sometimes with a blue cast to them. My monitor is calibrated via the Pantone Huey Pro and I'm curious if anyone could help me in figuring out what adjustments to make so that my prints are "close" to the original. I know that WYSIWYG is not possible, but I should be able to get closer than I am. LOL.
If there are any books or tutorials that would help me in particular, that would be helpful to me as well. I also have the ICC profiles for the Epson paper that I use. The issue in part at least appears to be that PE7 won't manage or allow color to be managed unless the printer is a postscript printer. There don't appear to be any postscript drivers for my printer on the Epson website. Perhaps there are some 3rd party utilities that could help as well.
    Thanks!
    hselburn

Well I went to the websites mentioned and I found out where to set the printer profile in elements, but it still comes up with the postscript error message, stating that calibration is inherently a postscript function and as the Epson Stylus Photo R800 is not a postscript printer, it turns calibration and color management in general off. *sigh of frustration but not giving up!*
That does explain why the colors are so far off. I wonder how to apply my printer *and* monitor profile to elements. I believe elements uses my monitor profile by default, but if it won't turn postscript off so that it is compatible with my printer, that won't work. Wish I could afford the full photoshop, this might not be a problem then.
I also tried saving the file as a pdf but that did not work. If I'm not mistaken, and I could be, that also includes postscript by default, which as I got the postscript error message again when I tried to print the pdf, I would have to believe it does. Is there a plugin that might help?
Funny thing is the original image is in the .jpeg format, not eps.

  • Funky Banding Seen in PS CS5 Color Management with Some OpenGL Modes

While experimenting with gradients and large gamut color spaces in response to another post, I came across a peculiarity with displaying image documents in Photoshop CS5 that are using ProPhoto RGB when OpenGL is enabled.
The test is a simple radial gradient from black to gray using 16 bits/channel and the ProPhoto RGB document profile.  In my test setup, I am using the standard Windows-supplied sRGB profile for my monitor, and the video card is an ATI Radeon HD 4670 running Catalyst 11.1 drivers.  The following are screen grabs using the same technique and software in all cases.
Exhibit A follows:  This is the display with OpenGL Disabled or Enabled in Basic mode.  Note the perfectly smooth gradient.
Test 2 (below):  Same document as above, OpenGL enabled in Normal and Advanced modes). Note the slightly colored posterization / bands in the display of the gradient.
This is not a limitation of my video card's OpenGL implementation, because on this very same system one of my own applications, using 16 bit color management and OpenGL (GL_RGBA16 format specifically) displays a smooth, clean gradient.
Here is the Photoshop file from which I generated the above displays.  I'd be curious to hear whether you see something like the first or second image when you open it in Photoshop CS5.

Thanks for the responses, and thank you, Chris!
Just to clarify (I know Chris understands, but some of the other responses don't list the OpenGL mode)...
    I see the problem:
With OpenGL Enabled in Advanced mode.
With OpenGL Enabled in Normal mode (i.e., what's shown when you click the [Advanced...] Button in Edit-Preferences-Performance.
    I don't see the problem:
With OpenGL Enabled in Basic mode.
    With OpenGL Disabled.

  • Color management with HP officejet 6500 E709 serie

Can you pls tell me what my color management settings should be set to on mty HP officejet 6500 E 709 series? It is connected to an HP Elitebook 6930p.  All cartridges are new but none of the "red/pink" colors print.  Thank you.

I have the same problem - no idea what to do to correct.  Yesterday I replaced the magenta cartridge and within an hour it was telling me the cartridge was empty.  Turned it off and today when I turned it back on it sees the magenta cartridge as full.  Useless as it is tho, with the colors all pink.

  • AE CS4  Color management with HDTV

Working with the Sony EX1 and EX3 which according to Sony engineers works in the 709 HDTV colorspace.
This space is about a dead ringer for sRGB when overlayed in Colorthink. The issue I am having is that if you actually assign the 709 or sRGB profile to a still image that is captured off a recorded clip, the blues are out of wack. I can export a single frame of the color bars from the Sony application, and the frame is tagged sRGB. Open the image in Photoshop CS4 or AE CS4 and use the embedded profile and the bars look purple. Apply no color management, and the lineup looks correct, nice and blue. Anyone know what is going on here?
I'm not exactly sure how to integrate AE sequences if assigning the 709 output profile is going to wack the colors.
Yes the monitor is calibrated, its the NEC 3090 (12 bit Hardware LUT) with Spectraview II.
    TIA,
    Cris Daniels

ok, I think I am onto something. My footage is 709, and my workspace is 709. It defaults to "none", but I change that to the 709HD profile. I am not checking any of the linear options because it is all 8-bit footage and if this is anything like Photoshop, 8-bit data in a linear space is a no-no.
Here is the $64,000 question, what the heck does the "Use display color managment" option in the "view" menu actually do?
At first I though that I should leave this on, but THIS option is what is wacking my footage. If I leave that setting off (unchecked), my colors look ok. Even if I leave this option on and set to "no output simulation" it changes the preview.
Right now I am a little confused as to exactly how that "use display color management" functions. It almost looks like turning it on is somehow double color managing my display and therefore the weird color shift. Is it safe to assume that AE is already using my colorsync profile like it does in Photoshop and that I do not need to check the "use display color management" at all?
For what its worth, the AE color when setup correctly (uncheck the display color management), matches the Sony HDCAM clip browsing and transfer software, and Photoshop. Originally I was comparing AE to Premiere Pro, and Premiere Pro doesn't match anything perfectly (grrrrr....) but at least I now have three apps matching up great.
Premiere Pro is weak on color management to say the least, and I've heard that it does not correctly display the Sony HD footage, so looking for a total match to AE is probably a dead end.
Anyway, if you can explain the display color management option I can get my head around that a little better.

  • FWIW: Advanced Color Management with HP printers

As I mentioned in another thread my HP Deskjet 5650 is beginning to fail so I'm in the market. As much as I like the hard won results and convenient availability of supplies I'm tired of not being able to over-ride HP's color management and let Elements control the printer's color space.
After some very frustrating research on HP's site I am surprised to learn that the following full size printers allow exactly that and quite a few of their 4x6/5x7 printers, too:
    Deskjet 5420v, 5440, 5740, 5940, 6500, 6620, 6830 and 6840 Series
    Photosmart 7960, 7850, 8050, 8250, 8250v, 8250xi, and 8253 Series
The research was frustrating because very few of the technical pages for those models mention that color can be managed by the application.
Finally a search of their support site for "Advanced Color Management" brought up the list.

  • Color Management With CS2 & Lightroom

I think I have finally figured out how to sync all my color management settings with CS2, Lightroom, my Nikon300, and my jpg viewing software. All are set to color profile sRGB and a picture looks almost exactly the same in every program.
My main use with these programs and the desire for good color is shooting a ton of basketball game pictures and color correcting and painting them in Photoshop.
My question: Is sRGB the best choice color profile, or does anyone have an opinion on an alternative profile.
    Thanks for your opinions.

Okay, that's what I'm looking for is an opinion or two. I take these "Photoshopped" files and print 8x10's on my Epson R800 and I'm still fighting a little with what's on my screen versus what prints. I know that's another whole issue, but I just wanted to feel I was at least on the right track with the color management and color profile choices.

  • Color management with Officejet Pro 8500

I am trying to print photos with my new Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless.  The photos come out dark and generally not as accurate as the Officejet 7310xi that I am replacing.  Is there a way to tell the driver to let the application (or Windows) manage the color rather than the printer?  This was possible with my 7310xi (and my beloved 7960 that unfortunately does not have a full-featured Vista driver).
If I want better photo printing should I just switch to a Photosmart Premium All-in-one Fax?  Does it have better drivers for photo printing?

Since you had the Officejet 7310 already installed I would suggest setting the port for the 7310 driver to be the same as the Officejet Pro 8500 and use the 7310 driver.  It should be compatible, and the 7310 driver provides more color controls.

I have an up-to-date version of Aperture and a new HP envy 110 printer. There does not seem to be the option to use any clor profile but HPs on the print menu. Th eproblem seems to be common to all other apps I use. Have I wasted my money?

    Hi Melnee,
I see that you are having some scanning and eFax issues with the ENVY 110. I would like to see if I can help. When you try to scan from the front panel of the printer into the computer, what error or message do you get?
Although the 10.9.4 Operating System is not listed in this document, the 10.8 steps will be the same: A 'No Computer Detected' or 'Connection Error' Message Displays during Scanning.
Regarding the eFax issue, you would need to speak with the HP Cloud Support Team. If you live in the USA/Canada, 1-855-785-2777. If you live outside the USA/Canada, click HERE to find the Technical Support number for your country/region.

  • Unable to print colors with my photo ink hp348 on HP C3180

    Hi,
I've been using HP C3180 for several years now, mostly to print pictures and scan. I have always used original HP ink. Few months ago my scanner stopped working, however it was successfully repaired in the HP service. I dont know if this is related, however since that time I'm unable to print colors with my photo ink 348...
First of all - when I put only the photo ink into the printer, I get the 'e' error message and the 'check color ink' as well as 'copy' buttons are blinking on the device.
When I put the color ink with my photo ink into the device they stop to blink and the 'e error message' dissappears- however the colors are being printed from the color ink, not from the photo one - which makes a huge difference - but Im sure you know that.
I used to print with this printer in the past with only the photo ink inside, and it was printing colorful pictures, and I did not get any error messages, with one ink inside..
Please help me fix this issue
also - I do have the option to print in color ticked - so this is not the case
it looks like the printer does not recognize the photo ink and it treats it as a black ink.....(but I can assure that it is the photo ink)...

    Hi,
Seems like you have issue with the photo ink cartridge. Try to call HP support for potential replacement.
    Hope it helps

Ok, so new Mac user here and I had to do a decent amount of hunting around various threads to get a solution, but I eventually cobbled together my own.
    1) Open up Finder
    2) From the menu bar, select Go > Go To Folder
    3) Type in "~/Library" and select Go
    4) Once in the Library folder, select Preferences
    5) Right click on the Adobe folder and select Get Info
    6) Click the lock on the bottom right corner to allow changes
    7) Expand the Sharing & Permissions portion at the bottom
    8) Change Priveleges for Staff and Everyone to Read & Write
    After this, Illustrator opened perfectly.
    Hope this helps someone out!

  • CS4 Color Management Settings - Confusing for Brother Laser Colour Printer

I am new to Brother's Color Laser Printer and setting up the Color Management with CS4 for a document. Contacted Brother and they do not have informaton for Adobe Products. Here's what occurs when on the Print Screen:
Under 'Options'  — CS4 has instated 'Let InDesign determine Color Management'.
Under Printer Profile: 'RGB-SRGB 1EC6' is indicated. I can pull down the menu for other choices. Brother Printers are indicated but I have no idea which one to choose. What is difficult to ascertain is that in one project, I am using card stock. There is no choice available for other weights of paper as there is in MSW.
Inexperience prevails with using a color laser printer with CS4's settings. In other words, should I leave the choices provided by CS4 rather than choose the Brother Printer settings that cannot be explained by Brother?
    HELP!

What is difficult to ascertain is that in one project, I am using card
stock. There is no choice available for other weights of paper as there
    is in MSW.
With an RGB (no postscript) driver you would access paper and resolution profiles from the Printer... button of the Print dialog. So typically output color would be Composite RGB, Let InDesign Determine Color would be your only Color Handling choice, and you would leave the Printer Profile as Document RGB. Then you would click Print... and you would find paper and resolution settings under the Print Settings pop-up.
