  • When I save a CS6 InDesign file as an .idml file InDesign crashes and sends a report to Adobe.

When I save a CS6 InDesign file as an .idml file InDesign crashes and sends a report to Adobe.
When I restart InDesign the .idml file is in the directory as well as a locked InDesign file.
I cannot open the .idml file, instead I get the message:
Cannot open "" file. Adobe InDesign maynot support the file format,
a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing,
or the file may be open in another location.
I can however open an InDesign .idml file that was saved from InDesign CC software.
InDesign CC software is also unable to open the .idml file that I created in CS6.

It seems to be a corrupted IDML file. Does it happen with every file or only with that one.
What is the content of that file? Did you embed images or graphics or did you ink them? Size?
Maybe that this would help you: Re: InDesign 6 is crashing when attempting to open a particular document. All others are opening OK.

  • Crashes and read-only file systems

Notice: I apolgize for the long post, I've tried to be as thorough as possible.  I have searched everywhere for possible solutions, but things I've found end up being temporary workarounds or don't apply to my situation.  Any help, even as simple as, "have you checked out XYZ log, it's hidden here", would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks
I'm not sure what exactly caused the issues below, but they did start to happen within a day of running pacman -Syu.  I hadn't run that since I first installed Arch on December 2nd of this year.
    Setup:
    Thinkpad 2436CTO
    UEFI/GPT
    SSD drive
    Partitions: UEFISYS, Boot, LVM
The LVM is encrypted and is broken up as: /root, /var, /usr, /tmp, /home
All LVM file systems are EXT4 (used to have /var and /tmp as ReiserFS)
The first sign that something was wrong was gnome freezing.  Gnome would then crash and I'd get booted back to the shell with all filesystems mounted as read-only.  I started having the same issues as this OP:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=150704
At the time, I had /var and /tmp as ReiserFS, and would also get reiserfs_read_locked_inode errors.
When shutting down (even during non-crashed sessions) I would notice this during shutdown:
    Failed unmounting /var
    Failed unmounting /usr
Followed by a ton of these:
device-mapper: remove ioctl on <my LVM group> failed: Device or resource busy
Nother of these errors had ever appeared before.
After hours of looking for solutions (and not finding any that worked) I was convinced (without any proof) that my Reiser file systems were corrupt and so I reformatted my entire SSD and started anew - not the Arch way, I know   I set all logical volumes as EXT4.
    After started anew, I noticed
device-mapper: remove ioctl on LVM_SysGroup failed: Device or resource busy
was still showing up, even with just a stock Arch setup (maybe even when powering off via Arch install ISO, don't remember).  After a lot of searching, I found that most people judged it a harmless error, so I ignored it and continued setting up Arch.
I set up Gnome and a basic LAMP server, and everything seemed to work for a couple of hours.  Soon after, I got the same old issues back.  The System-journald issue came back and per the workaround on https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=150704 and a couple other places, I rotated the journals and stopped journald from saving to storage.  That seemed to stop THOSE errors from at least overwhelming the shell, but I would still get screen freezes, crashes, and read-only file systems.
I had to force the laptop to power off, since poweroff/reboot/halt commands weren't working (would get errors regarding the filesystems mounted as read-only).
I utilized all disk checking functions possible.  From running the tests (SMART test included) that came as part of my laptop's BIOS to full blown fsck.  All tests showed the drive was working fine, and Fsck would show everything was either clean, or
    Clearing orphaned inode ## (uid=89, gid=89, mode=0100600, size=###
Free blocks count wrong (###, counted=###)
Which I would opt to fix.  Nothing serious, though.
I could safely boot back into Arch and use the system fine until the system decides to freeze/crash and do the above all over again.
The sure way of recreating this for me is to run a cron job on a local site I'm developing. After a brief screen freeze (mouse still moveable but everything is otherwise unreponsive) I'll systemctl status mysqld.service and notice that mysqld went down.
It seems that it's at this point my file systems are mounted as read only, as trying to do virtually anything results in:
unable to open /var/db/sudo/...: Read-only file system
After some time, X/Gnome crashes and I get sent back to shell with
    ERROR: file_stream_metrics.cc(37)
    RecordFileError() err = 30 source = 1 record = 0
    Server terminated successfully (0)
Closing log file.or_delegate.h(30)] sqlite erro1, errno 0: SQL logic error or missing database[1157:1179
rm: cannot remove '/tmp/serverauth.teuroEBhtl': Read-only file system
Before all this happened, I was using Arch just fine for a few weeks.  I wiped the drives and started anew, and this still happens with just the minimal number of packages installed.
I've searched for solutions to each individual problem, but come across a hack that doesn't solve anything (like turning off storing logs for journal), or the solution doesn't apply to my case.
At this point, I'm so overwhelmed I'm not even sure where exactly to pick up figuring this issue out.
Thanks in advance for any help

Did this occur when you booted from the live/install media?
What is your current set up? That is, partitions, filesystems etc. I take it you have not yet reinstalled X but are in the default CLI following installation?
If turning off log storage didn't help, reenable it so that you may at least stand a chance of finding something useful.
What services, if any, are you running? What non-default daemons etc.?
Does it happen if you keep the machine off line?
Have you done pacman -Syu since installation and dealt with any *.pacnew files?

Every time I try to add a new video to my photo folder...iTunes says it's experiencing a problem and then it crashes and shuts down. What can I do to add video to my photo folders?

Hi mterry1723, one solution that might be worth trying is this:
    - Close iTunes, if it's open
    - Open Safari and got to 'Preferences'
    - Select 'Security' on the top
    - Untick all the security options in the menu
    - Click the 'Show Cookies' button and look for all the 'apple' entries in the left-hand column.
    - Highlight them (select them collectively) and press 'Remove'
    - Now open iTunes and buy the song as usual.
    - You may be asked to do the same security process as before, so do as asked.
    - Hopefully, the security check will now have accepted your answers and start downloading the song as normal.
Remember to re-tick all the required security options you had just un-ticked in Safari preferences. You don't need to bother about opening the cookies again.
I hope this has worked for you and my profoundest apologies if it has not. Worth a go, though!
I did see this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18259935#18259935 which may be of more help, mainly the last entry by 'c2boyd'

  • InDesign Crashed and Now Can't Open the File It Crashed On

I had a file open from a G4 server. I left and came back and my computer had gone to sleep losing the connection to the server. InDesign crashed with that file open and now I can't open the file at all I keep getting this error message:
Cannot open the document [document name]. You may not have permission or the document may be open already. For multi-user access, close the file and then lock it using the File > Get Info command in the Finder.
The document is not open, on the server I forced the permissions to be all read and write for everyone, I dumped my InDesign preferences. What else can I do? Has anyone had this problem before? (I am connected to the server now that I'm trying to reopen it.)
When I started InDesign after it crashed, it asked me to recover the file and I tried to but it didn't open anything (I was not connected to the server at that point which may have screwed things up) There are two files in the InDesign Recovery folder one called 'RecoveryData' and one called 'DBTmp239689402256' both of which don't open in indesign.

You may want to back up your work on a regular basis. Check out Retrospect or Retrospect Light. Lots of computers come with the light version so you may already have it.

  • Saving and organizing imported file to time capsule

Long time PC user utilizing Picassa for photos management. Recently bought macbook pro and time capsule and have moved all photos from external hd to tc. how do i access these photos through iphoto while keeping them on tc vs notebooks hd? currently photos are in separate folders by event. will iphoto library recognize?
    thanks for everyone's time...

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
This is not a recognised use for a Time Capsule and some folks have reported issues when trying this.
    Note also the caveats below.
However, what you want to do is run a Referenced Library.
    *How to do it:*
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
    *What Happens:*
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
    *Some things to consider:*
    1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. *Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes*.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
    4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
    My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) :
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    Regards
    TD

  • I want to get CC out of my computer, and go back to Indesign CS6 and convert my files to IDML

I have never liked CC on my computer.  It does very weird things, freezes sometimes, and I have converted back to CS6 and updated to latest version, which of course is way behind what CC is at (v 10 something now?).  However, when I open my newly saved CC file as an Indesign IDML file, it loses the file name I gave it, and reopens it as "untitled" -- and this is making me crazy.  What is going on???

Normal behavior. IDML files always open as untitled.

  • HELP!!! Quicktime Crashed and Perminanlty Deleted Files HELP!!!

I was trimming a movie file in quicktime when the application crashed. Upon crashing I saw my file get deleted from my computer. It isn't in my trash bin or anywhere on my computer. I DID NOT DO THIS, why did quicktime delete my file? How can I recover it? Someone please help meeeeee.

This is a video file taken with my camera. I exported it onto my computer.
If you exported the file to your computer, then the exported version of the file should still be on your computer unless, a) you never actually stored it on your computer, b) deleted it, or c) overwrote it by saving a different version to itself. Therefore, the question becomes "How did you 'export' the file to your computer?" and "Which version of QT were you using to trim the file?"
It deleted the original source file is what I'm saying... When I went to trim the video to make it shorter quicktime crashed and erased the Source File, the original and the only copy that I had.
Normally I would say this is impassible unless you deleted the source file manually during the editing process before the crash. The crash should simply lose all edits made before the crash but not affect the source file. Even stting the source file to a zero frame playback doration in QT 7 Pro and then saving the playback pointers would not delete the original file. And, even though your could not play the data with the QT player, the file would still exist and the data would still exist in the file whilch third-party players could still play. The only way I can force this to happen is to open the file in QT 7, copyth the data to temporary memory, delete the original file, begin trimming, and then have QT crash while working on the "temporarily" stored data in the "project" player being edited.
It's not in the trash and file recovery programs aren't finding it either. It has left me very confused and with a very bad image of Quicktime in my mind.
Editing projects are, by their very nature, "nascent" until they are exported or saved. Therefore it would not appear in your trash nor would the source file appear in the trash unless you put it there. Some forms of editing (like QT 7 trims using in/out references) can be written to the source file container which will prevent your accessing the data in the QT player but does not physically remove the data from the file container.
Without knowing your specific workflow and apps used, it is difficult to try and guess what might have happened.

  • Acrobat X Pro crashed and deleted the file

    I am using Acrobat X Pro 10.1.3 in OS X 10.1.1.
I was working on a file. Acrobat crashed without warning and reopened. It did not reopen the file. I looked in the Open a Recent File dialog box and in the Recently Opened menu, and my file was not there. I then looked for the file in the OS X Finder, and it appeared there as a blank file, but then--when I highlighted it--the file icon disappeared. I restarted Acrobat, and THIS time the file appeared in the dialog box and the Recently Opened menu, but when I selected it, I got a File Not Found message.
I also did a search on the entire Mac for my file and it is absolutely gone.
The problem isn't just this file--it's that it could happen to any file I am working on. The only work-around I have for now is to break large files into smaller parts by extracting the pages, so that if I lose a file, the damage is not as bad. But that's ridiculous.
This file had been saved. Repeatedly. Didn't make any difference. Does anyone have any ideas?

I'm not sure the size is right, but this is the sort of thing many people see, so don't be concerned.
One cause of much bigger size than expected is that, as well as the programs themselves, there are also the information used to install and update.

  • Indesign Crashing with .indb Book file

    Hi,
I'm having an issue with using the Book pallette crashing InDesign every time I try to edit it.
I've found many people having crashing issues on Mac OSX and with exporting to PDF but can't seem to find an instance of crashes due to Book files.
Basically every time I try to delete, move, add a page to the Book (.indb file), InDesign will pop up a dialogue "Updating page an section numbers" and update the docs within the Book. This works as it should until I add one of my Chapters (largest chapter at: 26, 884 KB). It then proceeds to crash after trying to udate the book every time I try to edit it.
I'm wondering if there is a Book size restriction or a Chapter size restriction, as the only real difference this chapter has is size. All the Chapters together equate 108, 450 KB, which I would have thought InDesign could handle, which makes me doubt that file size is the issue.
The whole Book is only 98 pages.

I used the Remove minor corruption by exportingon my other .indd docs and it reduced the file size dramatically in some cases. The reason being, I was saving chapters from a single consolidated document (53,136 KB), by copying the document then deleting pages. While the file size was reduced each time it must have retained unessessary information when deleting pages. I assume the solution mentioned must clear whatever unused cache is in the document, resulting in the file size shrinking.
    Example:
Largest chapter at: 26, 884 KB was reduced to 16,888 KB
2nd largest chapter at 25, 356 KB was reduced to 2,988 KB

  • I worked for 5 hours in InDesign yesterday and today the files are not there?

I worked on a file in InDesign yesterday and today my current files are not there. I saved, I searched. Anyone know what else to try?

What version of ID? What OS? did you save from the menu, or by using the keyboard shortcuts?
There seems to be a bug, I think in CC 2014 on Mac, that is disabling the save and undo functions for some users. There are several threads about this.

  • Flash CS5.5 constantly crashing and no autorecovery file created!

We are on CS5.5 in our studio (and no upgrade will be done in any near future, so we are stuck with this version)
So Flash crashes are frequent and we all knonw it.
Most of the times Flash also destroys the file it was trying to save during a crash, so that the file cannot be opened after. I would expect at least Auto-Recovery function to compensate for this nightmare, but for some reason it does not create any auto-recovery file! My Auto-recovery is ON and set for 20 minutes, and my Auto-Save is always off in all files.
This is totally ridiculous. What the hell are we paying for?!?!
Update: I just realized, that setting auto-recovery to 10 minutes solved it (at least for now) - now Flash does create the Auto-Recovery file. But It's quite frustrating to work with it freezing every 10 minutes to save. 20 minutes or even 30 is more acceptable, but it doesn't work

Flash only creates an auto-recovery file when you haven't manually saved.  Every time you manually save, it resets the timer.  So it may be possible that when your auto-recovery was set to longer intervals you weren't seeing an auto-recovery file because you were manually saving before Flash had time to create one.
As for the occasional corruption bug...that's a whole different issue that I have daily nightmares about.

  • Live Capture Plus, CatDV and FCPX Import Files

I have tested my workflow process as set out in thread:
Re: Is my workflow reasonable for a beginner?
capturing Sony handycam DV using Live Capture Plus - that seems to work fine.
Files set up in CatDV under the appropriate directory structure as mov type files - that seems to work fine.
Tested files with QuickTime and the Inspector shows DV for the imported clips.
Went into FCPX used Import Files - I selected the DV file in the CatDV directory and checked Create Optimizd Media.  The problem is that transcoded media was not created in the Event directory as I thought would happen.
I do get a small alias file in the Event - Original Media directory.
The clip does import and opens fine in FCPX - on reveal it points to the DV media in the CatDV Directory.
Is there a reason ProRes422 optimized media was not created?
Additionally going into the event after the import and trying to optimize the clip manually the Create Optimized Media (and Create Proxy Media) options are greyed out.
    Thanks.

Read the help file on importing and on the page Import Preferences their are a few words that indicate:
"If the original camera format can be edited with good performance, this option will be dimmed." as it relates to creating optimized files.
Guess that means the DV file provide "good performance".

  • My Final Cut Pro keeps crashing and restarting the computer what could be the problem?

My computer keeps crashing and then restarting whenever I try to use my Final Cut Pro X.  I have an iMac with OSX 10.9.2 and 12GB of memory
there is an ATI Radeon Hd 5750 1024 MB Graphics Card, I just don't understand why things are not working at all.
What can I do to ensure everything is compatible and there is nothing I am missing.

Whatever the cause, please return to this forum and tell us what you did or had done to get your system working again.
There is no direct connection between FCPX and restarting the Macintosh that I am aware of. You haven't said if you can actually launch FCPX and then something initiates a restart. And you haven't said what error you see, if any. Nor have you actually said if FCPX has ever worked on that machine. Vital information.
If you search this FCPX forum, you will see that other users who have had restarting issues have not reported back to tell us about their solutions. ON other Apple forums, perhaps those related to your specific hardware and version of Mavericks, you will find several obscure and seemingly unrelated restart issues.
I have not had andy Macintosh restart issues for many, many years. My experience with Macs is that restarts are almost always hardware-based, usually incompatibility with some weird third party rig like a USB repeater, firewire adapter, cereal box keyboard, cheap monitor, ancient card reader, or even an oddball sound system. Start by disconnecting everything.
Hope you get it figured out.
