InDesign crashes when trying to use Zapf Dingbats

I have a somewhat frustrating problem that seemed to come out of nowhere today — every time I try to use Zapf Dingbats in InDesign CS4, it crashes. This happens when selecting the font manually or trying to access it with the glyphs palette. I've tried deleting the preferences and restarting the machine, and it still doesn't work. I've also tried inspecting Zapf Dingbats with Font Book and it turns up OK. This font hasn't given me any trouble in the six months or so since I've installed InDesign, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what on earth is going on.
Any suggestions?

Is this in a brand-new document, or is it across the board on all documents?
I've had particularly complex documents with many style dependencies behave this way... usually cleaning the styles up has fixed it. However, in a case like that, I can use the font without issue in another document.
If it happens in all documents, and it just started happening, I'd assume that there might be something wrong with the font itself (corruption? reinstall) or perhaps your computer. Care to give us some details about your computer, OS, et cetera?

  • Acrobat X Pro 10.1.12 under Yosemite crashes when trying to use arrow keys to navigate.

    Acrobat X Pro 10.1.12 Mac
    Yosemite OS X 10.10.1
Acrobat now crashes when attempting to use arrow keys to navigate. This is true on both MacBook Pro 15 retina and Mac Pro.

I ended up upgrading to Acrobat XI. This works, but Adobe is up to its old tricks changing the interface from what we're used to using. They now have decided to hide all the tools. You have to delve deep into the program to find the tools, then set up your own tool menus. Lord help you finding a tool that you use too occasionally to put on a custom menu.
Adobe has been doing this for years now. In Photoshop of olden days, it was simple to set up a brush, say, that you used frequently. Quite a few updates ago they made that vastly more difficult. And they've replaced words with happy little icons, that are not at all intuitive to use. I challenge you, too, to look at the icon for the airbrush and tell me whether it is on or off. (Sorry, this is mainly about Photoshop, but what they've done to the latest Acrobat is just as bad.)
Of course, their ultimate cuteness in making things difficult for the user is their essential abandonment of a Help system. You can't do a simple look-up of a function -- you have to go to an internet site and sort through a bunch of forums and user comments to get any information.

  • CS 3 InDesign Crashes when trying to Export To PDF

    Our File Problem
Dell Microsoft XP service pack 2
    Mac Intel Duo, Tiger
CS3 Fully Updated as of 3/17/08
CS2 Fully Updated as of 3/20/08
The problem first arose back when we upgraded to CS3, we found that files inside our document were crashing InDesign CS3 when we went to print or export the document as a pdf, the file originally made an interchange file which we could work with in CS2 so we went back and avoided CS3 until the catalog was finished.
The problem arose again after we started using CS3 again, but not right away. Many documents have been built and exported and printed with no problem. I was able to find and fix the problem through a piece by piece removal process of elimination. I isolated the problem link, opened it in photoshop, made a new psd file and saved the new file with a different name. Problem solved.
The problem became more complicated recently when I created a document, filled it with links, exported the file, changed nothing but copy in the document went to export and the document crashed InDesign. I then started the process of elimination and found that the problem link was different every time, and when placed into another fresh document would export just fine. All of the links were re-created in photoshop and used to create another document. The document was re created on other machines, everything went well until drop shadows were added into the document, then it crashed InDesign and could not be exported to PDF. We then took the same document, with the drop shadows, exported it in Interchange to CS2 and the document exported just fine to PDF.
As a test on the drop shadow issue, we took a number of different files and tested these in CS2 and CS3 with and without drop shadows. Every file we tried in CS2 worked fine with and without a drop shadow. However ,we experienced a number of crashed of InDesign with the drop shadows on these files in CS3. It seems to be just a portion of images, of a certain type of product we carry, but other than that there is no consistency to what is causing the crash. We also tested other effects and had the same results with InDesign CS3 crashing.
The other issue we see with this is that before the 1st of the year, we were able to export the same images in InDesign with the drop shadows and other effects. It seems that since the first of the year, the same images are not longer able to export from CS3 to a PDF. A couple of the possible thoughts we had were that there was an issue with recent updates in CS3, to test this we are going to uninstall CS3 and reinstall without running updates. We also are going to try to recreate the files that crashed InDesign and see if they can crash again on export.
Has anybody else experienced any similar issues? Does anybody know of a way to identify the problem in CS3 or with our files other than through trial and error? This is a major issue and problem for us since we are primarily a catalog based business and cannot have out catalog crash unexpectedly when we spend months working on it.
This problem is also not operating system specific, it is happening on both machines listed above

    Dean,
We found that the issue is a bug in the program, and this was the response i Got from an Adobe guy:
    Initial Response:
Thank you very much. Weve been able to reproduce the crash. It appears the underlying bug is triggered by having tall narrow PSD images and transparency effects (i.e. drop shadow). Well be working to further understand the root cause, and then working on a fix for a future release/update.
In the interim the best workaround I can come up with is to rotate the canvas in Photoshop 90 degrees so the image is short and wide, and then rotate it -90 degrees in InDesign after placing so you get the vertical orientation you want. The bug is triggered when processing the data as saved by Photoshop, so avoiding the tall and narrow psd should avoid the bug.
Im sorry to not have an easier workaround or immediate fix. Please let me know if you encounter any new crashes. Ill let you know if our further investigation changes our understanding of the root cause of the bug.
    Second response:
Well, I have a bit more info. Switching from a tall narrow image size to a short and wide one should avoid the crash for any specific image that crashed when tall and narrow, but unfortunately the root cause of the bug is in code that could potentially be triggered by any image. It appears to be exceptionally rare for other image proportions, but it is still theoretically possible. It just turns out its much more likely for a tall narrow CMYK+Alpha image.
So, as it stands I dont have a 100% guaranteed way to avoid this crash, but it should be much less common for short and wide images. If you do encounter the crash, switching the orientation should avoid the crash. Hopefully the orientation workaround will allow you to be productive with InDesign until a future release contains the fix.
    Hope that helps

  • Adobe InDesign crashes when trying to print

I use Adobe CS4 regularly.  I could print fine from all apps in CS4 until yesterday when I tried to print from InDesign CS4 and the app crashed.  All other apps in CS4 print fine, as do all other apps.  I've attempted to create a new print preset and also tried to edit the printer default, but InDesign crashes every time.  Has this happened to anyone else?
The only things I've done differently (or new) was to test a new antivirus app (Anti-Virus Software for Mac Protection | Kaspersky Lab United States) and also to download and try out the new Firefox 11.  I also created a couple of pdf files in InDesign (as I've done dozens of times with no problems).
The printer is an Epson all-in-one WorkForce 630, and I have confirmed that I'm using the latest drivers.  I've done restarts and shutdowns.  Nothing seems to help, and only InDesign CS4 seems to be affected.
ANY help would be greatly appreciated...and thanks in advance for your input.

Forgot to mention that I can still create pdf files using the CS4 presets, and can also continue to work on files and save them but the only way to print is by creating a pdf file and printing that.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hold down the Shift key while booting) which removes the font database which is the problem. Then reboot normally. Details can be found here: iWeb & iWork: Applications may suddenly quit after updating to Mac OS X v10.6.2.

  • LabVIEW crashes when trying to use VISA controls

When I try and place VISA controls onto the front panel or a constant into the block diagram LabVIEW crashes and says that LabVIEW.exe caused an error and that LabVIEW must be restarted. Is there some setup required in order to use VISA or is there something wrong with LabVIEW?

I saw something that sounded exactly like this myself on two PC that where running some kind of "Eveidence Eleminator" software that got its hooks into everything.
I never did get it running on those two machines.
I saw something similar when trying to access a serial port that was hanging off of a USB gizmo.
We downloaded the latest and greatest version of the driver for the USB to serail device
    and
upadted NI-VISA to the latest and greatest.
    Then everything worked.
It was just like you mentioned, LV looks fine right up until you drop a VISA control.

  • IPhone 4S keeps crashing when trying to use camera

Every time I receive a message my phone freezes, will not respond to the lock screen button or home button, every time I try to open the camera it crashes or crashes when I take the picture.

Did you use the latest backup after setting it up "as new device"? If yes, try again, this time without using the backup, maybe it contains damaged data causing your problem.
If this does not bring any change, you should get it serviced.

    HI,
*"that I Photo was corupted and was unavailable"*
That sounds more like a problem with their site (Java) not your images. Also, using the Facebook Simple Loader is much easier. In this graphic... might be hard to see but just under Cancel it says:
Trouble uploading photos? Try the Simple Uploader.
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1594
Make sure Safari is running in 32-bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.
If Safari still crashes, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.
Try logging using a different user account on your Mac. If you can upload images to Facebook without any problems then the problem is isolated to your user account and not system wide.
If you made Web Clip widgets, the webpage that it is the source of a clipping might be causing Safari to unexpectedly quit. Go into Dashboard and remove any web clip widgets. Then, if you can access the original website, re-create the widgets and see if the issue persists.

  • Indesign crashes when trying to view certain page

Hi, I have a 150 page document that I am working on in Indesign CS5 using a Macbook Pro 10.7.5. I am able to view and adjust every page except page 132-133. Every time I try to view those pages I get the message "the connection was lost for file filename.indd or the file was modified by another process". When I export the page to PDF it looks just fine. However, there are some adjustments I'd like to make but I can't access the file without the error message popping up and the program crashing. I have tried accessing the page in all sorts of ways with no luck (links, jump to page, scrolling, etc) every time it crashes.
All the files are on my home computer - there is no 'network' or another process that would interfere as far as i know.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Try exporting the file as IDML to remove the corruption.
    Open the file in InDesign.
Export the file to IDML (InDesign CS4/CS5) or INX (InDesign CS3 and earlier) format:
    Choose File > Export.
From the Save As Type menu, choose InDesign Markup, or InDesign Interchange.
Give the file a name and location, and then click Save.
Open the exported IDML or INX file back into InDesign.
This process rewrites the data in the InDesign document and can repair damage within the original document.

  • InDesign crashes when trying to insert a new page!

    I use InDesign CS6 on a PC Win7.
Suddenly yesterday when I tried to insert pages in one of the chapters in a book I am working on (12 chapters, 260 pages)  the software crashed!
I have tried 7 times more after that with different changes, like only open the chapter I want to insert pages in, restart the computer and so on.
Every time I try there is a "pling"-sound and It still crashes.
    What to do?

Unfortunately there are lots of different things that can cause crashing behavior.
Here is a list of things you could try:
Check that you have the latest version of InDesign CS6 installed. Help > About InDesign (should be 8.0.2) - Adobe - InDesign : For Windows : Adobe InDesign CS6 8.0.2 update - All Languages
Save the document as an InDesign IDML file, and reopen that IDML file in InDesign, then save it as an InDesign file again.
Create a copy of the InDesign document and try opening that and adding a new page.
In the open InDesign document before adding a page: Edit > Preferences > Type, deselect the Smart Text Reflow option.
Delete cache files (see: InDesign preferences and support files locations page)
Rename InDesign preferences file (or delete).
Disable/Uninstall any third party plug-ins that are installed, and check that any third party plug-ins or extensions that are installed are compatible with the InDesign version used (depending on how they are installed you could do this from the Adobe Extension Manager application - see http://helpx.adobe.com/extension-manager.html).
If all of this fails, you might need to try and isolate which object in your document is causing the crash. That's generally a time-consuming task, but hopefully one or some of the above combined will provide you with a fix.

  • Am I the only one who has firefox crashing when trying to use "Clear Recent History"?

Well I installed Firefox 4 on both my laptop and my desktop and it does the same problem to both of them, which annoys me greatly.
Such a simple feature should have no problems working right? Well not for me apparently.
When I try to use Clear Recent History (ctrl + shift + del) from the firefox menu, it asks me what I want to clear, then I press clear and nothing happens. It freezes and crashes. If I would have this problem for only 1 computer I wouldn't have minded much but the fact that this feature is having so much troubles running is getting a bit annoying for me. I just want to quickly clear my cache of everything. Shouldn't be hard!
What annoys me the most is that by browsing trough the web, I didn't find anybody else with this problem!
I don't mind much because after retrying it eventually works... but an awesome browser such as firefox should work from the start, not after many tries.

You can try to select only one setting at the time in [[Clear Recent History]] to see which one is causing the crash.

  • CS6 Photoshop crashes when trying to use type tool or opening up .psd files. Any ideas on how to fix it???

I have Adobe CS6 Design Standard (MAC). I have had it about a year and a half and use it a ton! Just yesterday while I was using Photoshop, I clicked to use the type tool, the "initializing type tool" box popped up then a few seconds later the whole program crashed. I tried opening it back up and every time I did it just kept crashing. I restarted and shut down my computer, but still no solution. I even uninstalled the program then reinstalled. Same thing. All of my other tools work just fine (brush tool, eraser, crop, etc.). Also, when I try to open up a .psd file the program crashes as well.
I tried searching the internet for solutions, but couldn't find much. One suggestion was to delete the Adobe Photoshop program settings file, I did that but it still didn't work. After each crash a report would be sent to Adobe, then another window would pop up saying that Adobe has found a solution for the recent crash. There is a link that says "please CLICK HERE for further details" but the link doesn't take me anywhere. It just doesn't work!
Has anyone had this happen to them? Any ideas on how to fix it? I really need to get this up and running again!!!

This is a user to user forum and Adobe Staff does drop by.
First thing to try is Reset the Type Tool by right-clicking on its' icon in the Options bar.
If you still have problems, it could be related to fonts. Here is a step by step troubleshooting help doc for that.

  • InDesign crashes when trying to place text

I'm using InDesign to convert html files in pdf documents: I usually place the html file and then run the FindChangeByList script that replaces all the contents of the tags with paragraph/character styles of my choice.
Given the fact that the above-mentioned html files are really unsophisticated, this takes just two clicks plus ten seconds for the program to perform the script.
This has gone perfectly well until a few days ago, when suddently ID begun to take hours to place the documents, even those that had never had problems before. I tried to place html and other file formats with the same outcome.
Anyone can tell me what problem there could be?
I'm sure I've not changed anything in the ID configuration nor in my pc, and I'm currently working with InDesign CS4 on Windows Vista.
(I also tried to empty the chace folders, but to no avail)
    Thank you.
    Sabrina

The first thing to try when ID gets flaky like this is to replace your preferences.
Adobe InDesign CS4 * Setting preferences
Export any presets from the "define" dialogs before doing this if you don't want to have to rebuild them all from scratch.

  • Labview crashes when trying to use bar graph

Hi all; I am trying to make a 3D Bar or 3D Pie chart but LabVIEW crashes and shut down. When I try to pick up 3D Bar graph from controls to the front panel, LabVIEW shuts down without giving any error. I was using LabVIEW 2011 and now using LabVIEW 2012 evaluation version but the problem is same on both versions. I am using windows XP.
    Any suggestions?

There has been reports about crashes like this in the past. There is already a CAR filed on this with LV 2009 which seems still to be "unaddressed". It is listed in e.g. the LV 2010 known issues.
Since the source of the crash is a result of an incompatibility between OS, graphic driver (device) and OpenGL, i doubt that there is much NI as company can do about it.
So i ask you to follow the suggested updates/test and see if the crash persists.
