InDesign CS 5corrupting file

Hi there,
I'm running InDesign CS5 on Windows 7.
Last month, I had one file that became corrupt. And by that I mean when I went to open the file I immediately got the "InDesign CS5 has stopped working message." The file never appeared to open. I had the option to either have it look for solution online (at which point it just closed the program) or close the program.
If I try and launch InDesign again it gives me the "inDesign CS5 has stopped working" message again.
If I try and launch it after that, it will tell me that the recovery failed last time I tried to open the document and would I like to start recovery.
If I choose yes, I get the "InDesign CS5 has stopped working" message again.
The file will not open as a copy either. The file was toast. I also tried opening the files on a co-worker's computer and that didn't work.
Then, this week I had the same thing happen to TWO more files. Same problem. The files appear to be toast.
Last night I backed up all my data again so when my current file had that problem I tried to open my back up file. Same problem!
I'm freaking out because I'm scared to work on any of my files for fear they will become corrupted.
I don't know what it doesn't like about the files. Two of the files were 8 page newsletters, and one was a 27 page file.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Okay. Here is an update. I did talk to Adobe support last week. They said it is not a problem with InDesign and that it could be caused by corrupt fonts or plug ins.
I already removed the only plug in I had installed and I have still had corruptions since.
I also used font doctor to scan my files. It gave me a list of 10 or so fonts that had bad table data, so I removed those fonts. Also, none of the files that have corrupted share the same fonts so is it possible that a font that is not in use in the document is still corrupting it? And only corrupting some files, but not all the files?
Since then, I have had a few more issues.
On Friday InDesign crashed twice - and by that I mean that when I was working on it a file I got the "InDesign has stopped working..." message. However, after I closed the program and reopened it, the file I was working on was fine.
Then Yesterday, I had a small two page file that worked on, saved, and closed. A few hours later I went to reopen the file and the icon for the file was no longer InDesign. When I try and open it it gave me a message that said "InDesign cannot open the file...it could be a missing plug in or the file could be open in another application." I tried opening a copy of the file. Same thing. So it's a another corrupt file, but in a new way than last time.
So I'm thinking I should remove and reinstall InDesign. I'm also wondering if I should restore my machine to system fonts only and then add the fonts back as needed.

  • How do I import an InDesign tagged text file into multiple pages and export as .ps or .pdf using Jav

I have an InDesign tagged text file I've translated from .xml. I need to automate the following steps:
1 - access specific InDesign template (eg. ABC_template.ind)
2 - import tagged text file into InDesign
3 - autoflow text to END of document (normally around 3-5 pages)
4 - save document as either .ps or .pdf file
5 - where the input file stub name matches the output stub name (eg., OrigName.txt outputs as OrigName.pdf).
I would like to completely automate this whole process using JavaScript (because I don't know anyone that knows AppleScript). I've automated the first part using a perl script. I've been trying to find sample snipits of JavaScript that would do one or more of the items listed above, but am having a hard time finding what I need.
Please, I'm desperate!! Can any of you InDesign scripting guru's out there help me??
    Thanks in advance!!

  • INDD CS6 error: "InDesign cannot open files in the "InDesign CS5.5 Document" format.

Working in CS6 on Mac OS X 10.7.5: When I double click an INDD file in the Finder, I get the following error from InDesign:
"The document "doc name" could not be opened. InDesign cannot open files in the "InDesign CS5.5 Document" format."
This just started recently and I have not been able to figure out why. I have not updated INDD or OS X. I can't think of anything else that changed, other than maybe a Java update. Have not updated to the latest OS yet.
The files I'm trying to open are files I created with CS6 - as recent as a few minutes ago.  I can open them fine using the File>Open command in InDesign so I can open them, but I can't open them by double clicking them in Finder or dragging them to the INDD icon in the dock.
The info in Finder's "Get Info" window says they are CS6 files set to open in CS6 and I have permissions to read and write. They are not locked.
This is not incapacitating, but rather annoying and slows me down since this is one of the most common ways I open files.
    Any suggestsion would be appreciated.

Probably won't work because it sounds like an OS problem of some sort, but you can try trashing the prefs. See Replace Your Preferences

  • CS5 InDesign cannot open files in the InDesign CS5 document format

I'll be working in InDesign CS5 with no problems then at some point I'll double click on an InDesign file and a window comes up and says - InDesign cannot open files in the InDesign CS5 document format. Sometimes when this happens I have to completely reboot my whole system before I can get InDesign to function correctly. Is this a flaw with CS5? Did not happen with previous versions. It doesn't always happen but I can't figure out what causes it. Would appreciate anyones help. I'm getting to really HATE InDesign!!

I have not uninstalled and reinstalled, but I did just switch over to another workstation using Time Machine. The previous system was Leopard. This one is running Snow Leopard.
I'm not sure how to parse this. When you say "switch over to another workstaiton using Time Machine" do you mean, "started using another machine that happens to be using Time Machine for backups and is also running 10.6 instead of 10.5"?
Or do you mean, "Used the Time Machine program to upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6?" If you mean the second one, well, I can't say I am surprised that things are messed up. And that would make your problem rather different than the other posters, which is good reason for you to have started your own thread (and thus your own solution)....
I'm a little bit leary of getting in and changing things in Terminal, without understanding what I am changing. Plus this is a workstation at work, so if I screw something up, that is not a good things, and I don't have time to spend a day fixing things back up again, with the way our workload is.
Well, you can find a lot of marginal documentation about lsregister and Launch Services, but I wonder whether your understood the ramifications of messing with Time Machine (or maybe I have misinterpretted you!). I'd be surprised if you found another way to fix this, other than uninstall/reinstall.
    Good luck.

  • Why can't I preview indd files within InDesign's open file dialog box?

    Hello all,
It is bad enough that Adobe doesn't add a plugin to preview any Adobe source file within Windows Explorer (well, except for PDF but I think Microsoft did that).
But I find it ridiculous that I cannot preview .indd source files inside InDesign's Open File dialog box. It just states, "No preview available". I am sure this failure is tied into what Windows can preview... still, not a good excuse!
This is also the same problem in both Illustrator and Photoshop.... neither Adobe program can preview their own file format!
WHY?  OR How can I correct this?
[UPDATE: SageThumbs | SourceForge.net seems to partially work on many Photoshop files (works reasonably well as long as I limit the file size to 70mb), it doesn't seem to work on Illustrator files (despite the claim), and it doesn't work on InDesign.]
Still, the question remains, why isn't Adobe taking responsibility for this?

    I think you all misunderstood.
I am referring to opening files *within* the Adobe software. Example: Inside InDesign, I click File > Open... I see a list of my .indd files and to the right is a window with the words, "Select a file to preview."  If I select an .indd file, I think it is reasonable to assume that I will see a preview of the .indd file... but NO, I just see the message, "No preview available."
In my opinion, this is a failing of Adobe!
    > Use bridge
Why would I want to open a separate program just to see thumbnails? Sure Bridge has its uses when I want to look at a lot of different images but I am only talking about quickly seeing a thumbnail before I open a single file within either InDesign, Photoshop, or Illustrator.
    Q. If Bridge can render thumbnails, why on Earth would Adobe not place the preview code into the open file dialog of each program?

  • Open InDesign 2.0 file in the CS5

I have a InDesign 2.0 file. When I open with CS5 version, the application warning the following: "Cannot open 'File.indd'. Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest version, or upgrade to the latest version of Adobe InDesign."
Also the dialog box shows the item "EPS PAGE ITEM.RLPN".
How fix this? How I can to open a InDesign 2.0 file again?

Do you still have version 2.0 (which is not the same as CS2, so maybe we should calrify just what the original file is)? Will it open in the original?
If it is, in fact a version 2.0 file and will not open in version 2.0 you have a real problem and the only hope I know of would be to send it to Markzware: Fix Your Bad InDesign Files!
If you want to zip the file and send it to me, I'll have a go at opening it in a few hours, but I can't promise anything.

  • Printing issues from InDesign CS4 pdf file

    Good morning,
Could you help explain and possibly resolve an issue I'm having with an InDesign CS4 pdf file where the text and image drop shadows (40%) are printing as solid black blocked shapes from a large format printer. The file encompasses 1 overall image, 1 image with drop shadow, 3 text frames with drop shadow effect applied to the text and 1 group set of simple rectangular and ellipse objects with a glow.
My colleagues in graduate school experienced the same with their files and the output bureau's rasterized the pdf file in Photoshop where it printed out with good resolution. Shouldn't this be resolved first in InDesign rather than rasterizing the file?
I appreciate any help and insight you could offer myself and my colleagues.
    Thank you, Kathryn

The printing service uses Acrobat 8 Pro and HP large format printer. My InDesign CS4 document is in the color mode of RGB and color type as Process. I saved it as a pdf file using the standard settings as follows: Preset: High Quality Print, Standard: None and Compatibility: Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3). Are there options I should be paying more attention to when creating the PDF file? Also, I was reading up on Peter Spier's response links.
This brings me to the next question...I'm creating a photo book for grad school with approximately 40 pages of images (RGB, 300dpi) with feathered drop shadows. What would be the best settings to use when exporting as a pdf file for printing services?
    Thank you for your help.
    Kathryn

  • Indesign-generated .pdf files won't print

I realize this question is vague to the point of being unanswerable, but here I go anyway.
Our department's publication person sent me a number of chapters of our book in progress so that I could print an uncorrected proof to show to our funding source. She emailed me .pdf files generated by InDesign CS2, probably, although it might have been CS3.
She also emailed me the indesign file for the frontmatter because I had some things to add, so the .pdf for that I generated myself.
I took everything to a local printer we regularly use. To print this job he was using a large commercial Canon setup I think. None of the .pdfs would print on it. He ended up having to print them all as images for the purposes of creating a proof for me.
Now, I printed all of them myself on our networked postscript printer, both from a Mac and a Windows machine, no problem.
Since the files had been emailed to me, and then to him, we thought maybe they got corrupted, so I brought them over on a disk, but that didn't help, not even the one file whose .pdf I generated myself would print.
So is this an issue that has come up--indesign-generated .pdf files being unprintable on a commercial printer but printable on a postscript machine.

    Dov and Al,
Yes, I'm sorry, I do realize that this isn't enough to diagnose a problem. I was hoping that this might be something that has come up before and someone would recognize.
As far as I could tell, he was opening up the print jobs in Acrobat and sending them to his printer, which had its own job monitor. When he consulted that monitor he just said, no, it won't print.
He's a smart guy and I've done a number of jobs with him that were generated in indesign, so I'm really at a loss to explain what has gone wrong with this one.

  • When placing a Illustrator file in Indesign, the Illustrator file sometime changes from 100%.

When placing a Illustrator file in Indesign, the Illustrator file sometime changes from 100%. When you select the placed file with the selection tool, it says 100%, but if you select with the direction tool, file has been changed any where from 98 to 102 %, not staying at the 100%? why is this and how can you asure the size does not change when placed or when updating the illustrator link?

Probably you have inserted files in a frame whose content was previously adequate with "Fit Content Proportionally" or "Fill Frame Proportionally".
The new content in the same frame will have the same characteristics as the previous one

  • Opening InDesign 2.02 Files in IDCS3

Has anyone encountered any issues opening historic InDesign 2.02 files in IDCS3
Is there a list of conversion issues posted anywhere on the site.
    Many Thanks
    Steve

    Hi Bob
When changing the font size in the top toolbar menu, if you type the font size in and hit return the value is ignored. If you leave the font size value highlighted/selected for more than a couple of seconds it deselects the value and when you type it replaces the text you have selected in the InDesign document. This also happens in the horizontal scale box. If you use the pull down menu it works fine.Just seems very buggy. I have recreated the scenario by taking the Indesign 2.02 documents to another location and the same problem is encountered. I would be happy to e-mail ftp them to see the problem.

  • InDesign JavaScript "help" file

I have used Jongware's InDesign JavaScript help files and have really found them essential. I am grateful for his efforts to make these available.
I am primarily a FrameMaker user and Adobe is going to provide ExtendScript support for the next version of FrameMaker. The FrameMaker object model is shown in the ExtendScript Toolkit CS5 Object Model Viewer. I would like to do something similar to what Jongware did in extracting the data to a series of HTML files. I am having difficulty figuring out where this data is stored. I can't find an XML file that contains the data. I am mainly posting this here because I haven't been able to contact Jongware directly. Thanks in advance for any help.

How can I open an InDesign 5.5 file that says it's missing plug ins and won't open, when I just opened and created the file last week?

When I try to open a CS6 file in CS5.5, I get the error message:
The way to generate this other message:
is to try to open something that InDesign can't open. This is sometimes an InDesign file that is corrupt. Once I found poorly configured backup software keeping files open. In other cases I've had clients hand off files that were supposed to be InDesign files but turned out to be renamed zipfiles or PDF files or Word files (all of which fall under the "may not support the file format" statement above). You've already ruled out it being open elsewhere by searching for .idlk files, and you've ruled out plugin issues already (by not having a CS6 file generate the new "because it was saved with a newer version" message, and chances that you've installed some kind of plugin that ), so it almost has to be a file that is broken or misnamed in some way.
