InDesign CS English to CS3 French update

We're being obliged to migrate from InDesign CS (English version) to InDesign CS3 (French version, together with Windows XP OS in French). Please don't ask why!!
Several years ago when we migrated from Pagemaker 7 to InDesign CS (both English versions), we experienced considerable problems with our InDesign documents that predominantly use the Times New Roman PS MT font. The major problem occurred when the same document was opened on different computers. We would sometimes get pop-up font incompatability messages, indicating that only the Times New Roman font was available. This was eventually corrected by our IT department, but it took a while.
Is anyone able to offer some information/advice/experience/pitfalls on this proposed update, whether it's a straight English to English update or an English to French update (certainly more helpful...)?
Thank you.

Thanks for your input, Peter. From recollection, I believe that's how our IT dept. solved our earlier problem, by uninstalling the TT version and installing the Postscript version.
However, with a French OS, if all French fonts are installed we're going to get a "gras" version, rather than "bold" and "italique", rather than "italic, etc., etc., where we currently have paragraph styles set as "bold", or "italic", etc., in both English and French versions of documentation.
Theoretically, you're right about this happening once for each file on first opening, but we do have hundreds of files, so even this is going to be tedious, and with multiple computers, I am not confident that this is going to pass with few problems...

  • Workflow for converting english titles to french in livetype and motion

    Hi everyone,
    I am about to embark on a french version of a 20 minute video and I'm looking for some advice.
    In the english version, I created titles in both motion and livetype. I'm still a bit of a novice with these programs so I admit that I relied on Final Cut Pro to further manipulate the titles in terms of sizing and placement with a touch a slow motion to get the timing right. It was exciting to discover that any text changes in these programs would automatically update in the timeline in Final Cut Pro as long as I didn't change the file name.
    So, that got me thinking.... I'd like to change the english titles to a french version and take advantage of the automatic updating in FCP. But how do I protect my english master?
    My backup plan is to create new file names for the french titles and try the " copy content" approach but I have some reservations.
    As always, I look forward to your feedback.
    Cheers and Happy Holidays.
    Chris

    Hi Everyone,
    I want to provide an update on my progress for those who might be interested.
    I have some 50 english titles in this project, some motion and some livetype and some boris.
    To prepare for the french version, I did a "save project as" to create a french version of the project as suggested. Then, I did a "save as" on each title file, adding "french" to each one and saving the new version in a new file folder for my french stuff.
    I've made a duplicate of my english master timeline and here's where it gets interesting.
    I'm finding that if I "right click" on the title in the timeline to open it in the Editor to make changes, it opens the original english title, thus putting my english version in jeopardy! I'm guessing because I simply made a copy of the english version.
    Here's my plan of action... Control Click each title in the french version timeline and use reconnect media to connect the title to the new version that I've saved in my french stuff file folder. Change the english text to french.. place in oven to bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes, let stand for 2 and voila - one french version ready for voice over.
    Can someone let me know if I'm on the right track?
    Cheers,
    Chris

  • HT204411 iTunes store - I live in the German speaking part of Switzerland (and have a credit card address here too) but want to watch films in English, Italian, or French. Why are films not available in these other languages ?

    Hello, I live in the German speaking part of Switzerland (and have a credit card address here too) but want to watch films in English, Italian, or French. Why are films not available in these other languages ? Unless I am mistaken, iTunes Switzerland is far from Swiss and does not encourage its people to watch films in the local languages of its country (at least French and Italian would be good too...). Can anyone help ? Do I have to move to Geneva to watch a non French film in French or Lugano to watch a non Italian film in Italian or simply buy a DVD to get round it?

    I have the same problem. I want to watch any movies in French (in the original, or subtitled and/or dubbed). But I cannot seem to find any on iTunes. Does iTunes offer any content in other countries (I live overseas) in the languages of those countries?

    Hello! I used QuickTime for watch any videos on OS X Mountain Lion, but now, I'm passed to OS X Mavericks and QuickTime, when I open an .avi file, convert this in a .mov file. I'm sorry for my English, I'm French and I don't know speak English very well, but what can I do for QuickTime opens on .avi and doesn't convert to .mov?

    HI GalaxieMusique,
    I'm french too, but I'm going to write this post in english so that everyone may understand it
    I have the same problem in Mavericks, but I'd say, more important, with QuickLook.
    Indeed Quicklook can't read avi movies anymore. Actually it always been the case, but with Perian we were able to fix it. The problem is that Perian is no longer available for Mac OS 10.9....
    I'd assume that our only hope is Apple themselves... It would be nice from Apple to creat an add-on for quicklook to be able to preview the avi movies.
    In regards with quicktime, you can download QuickTime 7 here:
    http://www.01net.com/telecharger/windows/Multimedia/lecteurs_video_dvd/fiches/10 0.html
    and ask all the .avi movies to be played by QuickTime 7 and not QuickTime X (included into Mac OS).
    Sorry for the english, we french people can make mistakes sometimes
    If anyone has a solution for QuickLook, please do not hesitate. This topic is becoming a real mess....

    Go to Settings > General > International > Keyboards > check those you want to use.
    Then when a keyboard comes up there will be a globe symbol next to the space bar, tap that to cycle through the keyboards to the one you want...that also links the appropriate dictionary.

    Folio overlay tools inside InDesign not showing in 2014.1 update.
    I've had this issue before with past updates. Has this issue been logged?

    I've just update OS X - 10.9.5 and that has fixed the issue.
    The folio overlays tab was empty but it's fine now, sorry for the question earlier. I probably should have updated the OS first

  • CS3 raw update not working

    CS3 installed with updates downloaded on windows xp machine still will not open my raw images from my canon 40d, but will open raw images from canon 20d. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the CS3 program. Another windows xp machine I installed cs3 and did the same updates and the images open in camera raw no problems. I have also checked to be sure the app is in the correct adobe file per their instructions. I also run an apple laptop and installed and updated Mac version CS3 and it runs fine. Any help would be appreciated

    Tom ... Most problems are due to putting the new ACR plugin in the wrong place. Therefore , we'll need to know exactly how you updated.
    A coupla things to try before coming back;
    (1) Look for the ACR version installed via 'CS3=>Help=>plugins' (... if it reports v4.3 let us know ... if it reports 2 versions, let us know that too, and how you installed v4.3).
    (2) Try installing via 'CS3=>help=>updates'
    (3) See the installation instructions here:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3822
    (3) Read the following thread (altho much of the beginning posts are about CS2, but I don't believe it makes a difference -- ie, replace instances of "CS2" with "CS3").

  • Where in Indesign Preferences do I tell Adobe Updater how to check?

    Where in Indesign Preferences do I tell Adobe Updater when to check for new updates?
    Also, how can I tell if I have the 6.0.4 update (I just got the DVD's in the mail)?
    Thanx!
    Sunday Morn

    Peter - I found Indesign to be the place under which the About Indesign is listed.  But I certainly am indebted to you for telling me to use the Command key while I clicked About Indesign, for otherwise I never would have found that list of updates.  The last ones on the DVD version were 6.0.0.352, it turns out.  So does that mean that installing the current 6..0.4 (or whatever) will fix everything, or do I have to install everything in between the two also?
    Maybe I can just let the Updater take care of everything.  It will sense I don't have anything since  6.0.0.352, right?

  • I need CS3 to update on new computer running mavericks. How?

    I need CS3 to update on new computer running mavericks. How?  I keep getting a message that the updater quit, but the installation went well.  No photoshop file opens correctly... there are just a lot of colored lines. But I cannot afford a new Photoshop suite at this time.  Any ideas?

    The new Sync version uses the Firefox account and stores the login data (username/email and password) under the https://accounts.firefox.com site heading in the Password Manager and use the signedInUser.json file in the profile folder to store the credentials once connected to the account to avoid having to enter the master password on each start.

  • How do I back-save a CS4 InDesign library file to CS3?

    Any ideas anyone?
    I have an InDesign library, originally created in CS3, but since updated in CS4.
    I need to distribute this to colleagues using CS3; they can open the library fine, but cannot drag items from the library to the page.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated as I'm pulling my hair out on this one (even though I've got no hair to start with!).
    Cheers,
    Martin

    Martin,
    A work-around: Open CS4 and the library. Drag objects out. Drag to desktop or Bridge. Open CS3, thus producing xml snippets. Drag snippets from Bridge or Desktop into CS3. Drag objects into a CS3 library.

  • Saving previously converted InDesign CS1 files in CS3

    My company recently upgraded from CS1 to CS3 (skipping CS2 altogether). I've noticed that after I open some CS1 layouts previously converted to CS3, when I hit <Save>, I get a <Save As> type dialog box where I either have to rename the file, or overwrite the file. This doesn't happen with layout files created originally in CS3. Is there some setting in CS3 that is constantly forcing this <Save As> type behavior on previously converted CS1 layouts? It's more of an inconvenience, than an actual problem, but annoying nonetheless.

    I understand converting/re-writing the file format to the updated (in this case, CS3) format, and am well used to this process from older InDesign file formats. What I'm experiencing is this: (1) I open up a CS1 layout file in CS3; (2) CS3 converts the layout; (3) I go to Save the file & CS3 prompts me with a <Save As> type dialog box; (4) I then either overwrite the existing CS1 layout file, rename the new CS3 layout or save it to a new location; (5) I close out the new CS3 layout. This is all expected behavior. However, when I go back later to re-open the newly "converted" CS3 layout file, the first time I go to <Save> the new changes to the file, I'm AGAIN prompted with a <Save As> type dialog. The file's already been converted to the CS3 format, so shouldn't it just automatically <Save> the file changes in a normal manner?

  • Converting object libraries from indesign 2.0 to CS3

    Hi !
    I work for a company which needs to convert the object libraries created on Indesign 2.0
    to work on Indesign CS3. Is there a way to do that? Object libraries are compatible within Indesign versions?
    regards
    Cicero Lira

    I created an object library on Indesign 2.0 and did the conversion to work on CS3. But the program crashes during it. I had success when i tried to open the library on Indesign CS.
    It works perfectly. But, when did the conversion from CS to CS3 it occurred the same problem ( the crash). Í downloaded the CS3 updates ( I'm using 5.0.3 version) and my OS is windows XP.

  • GDM in english instead of french ?

    Hello.
    Since last initscripts update, my GDM is in english instead of being in french.
    Adding a /etc/locale.conf file with :
    LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8
    LC_MESSAGES=C
    leaves me with an english gdm, an english gnome and no possibility to switch back to french.
    Any idea ? Known issue ?

    happens to me to, just with hebrew:
    [assaf@laptop ~]$ locale
    LANG=he_IL.utf8
    LC_CTYPE="he_IL.utf8"
    LC_NUMERIC="he_IL.utf8"
    LC_TIME="he_IL.utf8"

    LC_TELEPHONE="he_IL.utf8"
    LC_MEASUREMENT="he_IL.utf8"
    LC_IDENTIFICATION="he_IL.utf8"
    LC_ALL=
    [assaf@laptop ~]$ locale -a
