InDesign CS2 Book Function Tutorial/Guidance

I've been working on a client's book. Started out as a 300-page document. Multiple sections with many chapters and of course photos and illustrations in each chapter. I've been working with it as one huge document. Then the client will send in a new chapter to insert between this one and that one. Which required me to manually reposition all the images in the chapters following. Yeah, stupid of me. So, I think it's time for me to learn the Book Function of InDesign. Tips? Tricks? Tutorials? Guidance?

> Why would you have to reposition all the images. Aren't they specific to a given page? Why would they fall off a page just because you've inserted additional pages/chapters?
Mayhaps I am positioning/placing the images incorrectly? Mayhaps I am using ID incorrectly? The book has been one long text-flow. Let's say I place an image on page fifty-four, the start of chapter ten. An image dropped on top of the text box with text-wrap applied. Now the author sends me text for a new chapter to be inserted before chapter three, with a new image for that chapter. I place the cursor before chapter three's headline and insert the new text. Hence, a new text flow throughout which then makes the placement of the images not in the proper position...

  • How to Keep Pages as Spread in Exporting CS2 Book

    While working with InDesign CS2 book feature, I'm trying to export my book as a pdf. The trouble that I am having is when my pdf doesn't keep all of the pages as spread. For example, let's say my first file has 5 pages ( pages 1-5 )  and then the next has 3 ( pages 6-8 ). In the original files, the document has spreads. However, in the pdf, pages 1-2 and 3-4 are spreads and then page 5 is single. And then, page 6 is single and then pages 7-8 are a spread.
    My goal is to get InDesign to automatically create spreads when the files are exported no matter if the document has even or odd pages? I don't want to have to create all my files with all even pages. Does anyone know how this would be possible?
    Thanks,
    Jenny

    First, this is one of those shortcomings with the current state of affairs. ID doesn't combine booked documents when exporting spreads.
    So why do you want spreads? Is this for reader proofing (readers spreads which is what you'd get if you export a single doc as spreads)? If so, why not just fix the initial view in the PDF properties dialog? Export as single pages, then set the PDF to open as facing pages with cover page.
    Or are you trying to impose into printer's spreads? That's not the same thing at all, and ID doesn't impose except through Print Booklet (but you can use that to print to PDF?

I was able to install CS2 on the Virtual XP Machine on my Windows 7 computer, but I cannot register or activate it. Adobe no longer supports activation. Is there a way I can keep using CS2? I need to get files back and forth to my coauthor. I also have CS6. I understand that files can go form 2 to 6, but not backwards. Thanks Robert

    Hi Dave
    The idea is filter the files "*.indd" of the folder "Users/INDD" and then insert them in the book "BookINDD.indb". This script must be executed on InDesignServer. When I executed it, I get the error // ERROR:Process aborted by user, in the next line of the script: myBook.bookContents.add( myFiles[i] );
    I write de script again:
    //DESCRIPTION: Create a book and add indd-files of a choosen folder
    var path = "//Users/INDD";
    var bookname= "BookINDD";
    var myFolder = new Folder(path);
    if( myFolder != null ){
    // get indd-files of choosen folder

  • Can I export solid objects into Illustrator / InDesign CS2 and maintain vector format

    Can Adobe 3D export solid objects in vector format into Illustrator or InDesign CS2 suite?
    I'm interested in taking solid 3D objects developed in Pro/E 2.0 and import from Adobe 3D into Adobe Illustrator & InDesign in vector format for page layout. I want to import solid objects in vector format and maintain color scheme and surface textures.
    I'm running 3D trial version and can successfully import 3D objects (asm & prt files) solid views from Pro/E but can only export wireframe views from Adobe 3D Toolkit into Illustrator or InDesign (CS2). Solid objects first have to get rendered in a raster format before importing into Illustrator.
    If this function is not supported does anyone have experience doing this using Quadraspace or Right Hemisphere 3D software?

    Any help???? After 2 weeks I still can't learn from Adobe or Right Hemisphere people how to import solid objects in vector format into Illustrator with color and surface textures in place. All imported objects in vector format are converted to a wireframe or line format unless they are first rasterized.

  • Suddenly getting "Missing Plug-Ins" errors when opening .indd files in InDesign CS2

    I have a PC running Windows 7 and InDesign CS2. The laptop's installation of Windows was corrupted and I had to re-install the OS. I backed up all files, reinstalled the OS, and then reinstalled applications. One of those applications was InDesign CS2. However, after the installation of CS2 on the fresh copy of Windows, I noticed that I have trouble opening most, but not all, of the InDesign files on my hard drive.
    When I try to open a .indd file I see an error message pop up that says "Missing Plug-ins. LILO.APLN, DYNAMICDOCUMENTS.RPLN, CONDITIONALTEXT.RPLN" and three more. Under that list of missing plugins is the warning "This document uses one or more plug-ins which are not currently available on your system. Do you want to open anyway?"  If I click "okay" I then am met with another dialog box that says "Cannot open file. TEXT.RPLN, LAYER.RPLN" and on and on for about 60 more items.
    I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE THINKING! I've searched around concerning this issue and it appears the consensus is that the file was opened by a newer version of InDesign. That possibility is, in fact, an impossibility. Never have I used a newer version of InDesign. The files that I am working on were backed up, stored on local storage and not touched once before reinstalling the OS and reinstalling InDesign CS2.
    I also noticed that not all InDesign file formats were associated with InDesign in "Windows Programs and Defaults." I changed those to look to InDesign. I've also uninstalled InDesign CS2 and re-installed.
    Not all InDesign CS2 files are exhibiting this behavior. So far, it appears more than half are, but some can be opened with no problems. There seems to be no correlation between which ones are able to be opened and which ones can't be opened.
    What could have happened to these files and is there any possibility of opened them again? Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

    Conditional Text was a new feature in CS4. I'm thinking, can you explain how your old CS2 documents became aware of it?
    Not exactly sure myself. Abiogenesis?
    [Edit]
    Almost forgot. I wrote a script to unequivocally determine the InDesign version a document was last saved as:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4071273
    I'll give that a try today. Even an affirmative judgement that the files are newer than CS2 would not impress me however. The fact remains, the files were copied off one hard drive over to another, the plug was pulled on the hard drive, the PC was re-imaged, CS2 was reinstalled, the files were copied back over... and whammo.

    set myJavaScript to "var myLabel =\"" & myBridgeLabel & "\"; app.activate();

  • InDesign CS2 - 100 document limit and compatibility with newer versions

    Hello,
    I have Adobe InDesign CS2 and am using it to compile a large report. I have come across a problem once i tried to add more than 100 documents to my book and now see there is a 100 file limit to books in CS2. Each document needs to stay as a single file so i am unable to join files to overcome this problem.
    I have a summary table at the beginning of the document detailing the title of each file in the book. I am unable to work out how to create page hyperlinks in the pdf to the second book (documents over the 100 mark).
    It has since come to fruition that my company has updates to CS3 and CS5 and that these new versions do not have a 100 file limit in creating books. This document i am creating is over 400 pages long so i am wary of upgrading to a new version when i am not far from publishing.
    Should i have any concerns in upgrading to a new version of InDesign when i have almost finished my report? Would it be better to just upgrade to CS3 and not make such a large jump to CS5? Or does anyone know how to create page hyperlinks in my pdf to the files contained in the second book?
    Thanks for any help! Much appreciated.

    Normally I would advise against changing versions in midstream on a project like this, but I'm not sure you have a choice. My instinct is there will be fewer issues moving to CS3 than CS5, but there are far more features in CS5 you might like to use...
    One way to limit the possible anomalies would be to export all the CS2 files to .inx na open those in CS5, rather than converting the .indd files directly, then save as new CS5 .indd files and add to a new book. One very serious issue you may run into wehn moving to a later version is that the text engines are updated and text won't necessarily flow exactly the same, particualry justified text, which can cause line endings to move and some paragraphs may gain or lose a line, which can have a really devastating effect on a long doc if it causes a page count to shift. The killer is that the changes normally don't happen until you start to edit text in that story. I believe the .inx route will force a recompose on opening, but I'm not dead certain, so take a look at http://indesignsecrets.com/force-text-reflow-when-indesign-forgets-to-flow-the-text.php to see how to force the recompose manually as soon as you open the file (you'd only need to do it once, before saving in the new version, for each file), then check carefully for oversets or other problems. Live preflight in CS5 can help with that.
    As you can tell, a successful move to a newer version is likely to be a lot of careful work preparing and checking the files. Some of it can be automated (the export to .inx, the recompose, and the save in the new version) by scripting, but in all honesty you're going to need to check every page when you are done.
    One of the others who uses Hyperlinks will need to weigh in on ID's native abilities and linking to other files in a book. I know that doing that with cross-references (which don't even exist natively prior to CS4) is extremely likely to break down at some point and leave you trying to remake them all, and large numbers of links across docs is likely to slow CS5 in particular to a crawl unless all files (at least the ones to which there are links in the doc you are editing) in the book are open.

  • How to place a word document in a TextFrame with InDesign CS2 scripting (JavaScript)?

  • TOC links fail when using book function for interactive pdf output

    I have  a large print publication consisting of multiple files using the Indesign book function. I have created a Table of Contents in the first document (there are multiple files in this book), but when I save to interactive pdf to create a digital version the TOC links are lost. They only work within the first document.
    I have read numerous forums but cannot resolve this issue with the combination of:
    1. TOC creation
    2. Using Indesign Book Function
    3. Multiple documents in the one book
    4. Interactive Pdf output required
    I look forward to answers???

    I am on CC version 9.0 but am updating CC as I type this in the hope this may have some answers?
    If you are on CC, you should update your InDesign version to 9.2.1 as it is the latest version. Then you should open the TOC definitions, check it, activate the new add anchor on destiny function and save. Now you should actualize all TOCs.
    The TOC functionality has been improved and changed between 9.0 and 9.2. If you update your files accordingly you will suffer less pain.

  • Book-Function/PDF: Links between documents in pattern pages...

    Hello,
    we try to use InDesigns book-function for a complex presentation. It should work like this: We habe a book-file that collects single indesign files with projects. At the beginning there is a "start" file with standard-content, followed by THREE pages with tables of content. These pages are followed by some (round about a houndred) project pages. There are three different types of headline-formats for dfferent types of projects. That is why there ae three tables of content: for each type of project one...
    All project pages have the same pattern pages with three links at the bottom that refer back to the three tables of content. So if you are on a project-pag you can choose to wih table of content you want to go back.
    From while to while there are new projects, so we want to duplicate older projects, insert them into the book file and update the tables of content.
    Thats the theorie!
    Now to our problem: If we make a PDF file from that book some of the links back to the tables of content area working, some are not. Sometimes Indesign tells us that some links ae broken, even if they are all the same. I once had a PDF document where everything was working. But as soon as I insert a new project file indesign telles again that links are broken - not only in the new file - even if I havent changed anything in other files. And what works and what not is differnt from time to time, for me it seems to be quite arbitrarily...
    Does anybody know about this problem?
    Thank you very much!
    Jan

    Are these links Hyperlinks, or Cross-references?
    Inter-document cross-refences are known to be extremely unreliable. I don't work with Hyperlinks, but are you sure they are actually pointing to the document that contains the three TOCs? ID doesn't do relative links, as far as I know, so you'd need to set up the links as absolute to the correct file. It's possible, too, that hyperlinks between files are just as unstable as cross-references.

  • Installing Indesign CS2 on WIN7 64-Bit

    Hello,
    i tried to install InDesign CS2 Upgrade from the original CD-Rom on a new PC with WIN7 64-bit.
    To activate the installation I used the serial number from the version 1.0 IGP100R7012137-635 from the original register card from InDesign 1.0.
    This combination was used since any years on my old XP-PC and now I want to use it on the new system.
    What happened: InDesign CS2 said during the installation process: this serial no. IGP100R7012137-635 is not an InDesing serial no.
    I contacted Adobe via chat and they said, I need an InDesign CS2 version without need for activation, because Adobe killed the server for this function because of technical reasons.
    My question: from where can I get these InDesign CS2 version without need for activation?
    The serial number from my CS2 InDesign is: Deleted by moderator.
    Who can help or knows an easier solution?
    Thank you in advance for help!
    Renate.

    NEVER post a serial number on a public forum and be aware that CS2 is totally unsupported on Windows 7 and will be even worse on a 64 bit system. Heed the warning on that page:
    Adobe does not support CS2 applications, which were released more than seven years ago. Adobe strongly advises against running unsupported and outdated software.

    http://www.jongware.com/idjshelp.html
    Just a few hints:
    InDesign CS2 does not support GREP search/replace, so every line in your code that points to GREP does not work.
    Further: "app.findTextPreferences" and "app.changeTextPreferences" were "app.findPreferences" and "app.changePreferences" in InDesign CS2. And then there were no "findChangeTextOptions" or any counterpart for that in CS2…
    That should get you running…
    I have no InDesign CS2 installed to debug, so this is all I can say…

  • Indesign CS2 system requirements

    I'm working on iMac G5 OS X 10.5.4 leopard with InDesign CS2 ME. But the application keep on quitting during certain functions such as exporting.
    After the reading of the application system requirements PDF, I've found that one of the requirements are- Mac OS X v.10.2.8 through 10.3.8. Does it the reason why the application quit on my terminal seems I'm on OS X 10.5.4?
    Please advise.
    Thank You

    Not supported under Leopard.

  • Unable to print from Illustrator or InDesign (CS2)

    I havent installed CS3 yet, but will when able. For now, I need CS2 to function.
    First in Acrobat, then InDesign, and now in Illustrator, if I go to print (either File > Print or my using keyboard shortcut), the program just hangs indefinitely. The only way out is to force quit.
    Ive searched every conceivable combination of terms in these forums for this problem, but turn up nothing. Please dont tell me this is posted elsewhere unless you are also able to include a link to the other posts. Thank you!

    Have you reset the preferences for the apps? For ID, hold down Cmd-Shift-Option-Control as you restart and say yes to resetting the preferences. For Acrobat and Illustration trash the preferences folders in Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/Acrobat and/or Adobe Illustrator CS. Do this with the apps closed. Have you done the usual disk cleanup like starting from the OS startup disk and repairing permissions and something like MacJanitor to do the normal OS log cleanups?
