InDesign CS2 crashes or locks up with Leopard

Hi,
I wonder if anyone is also having this problem. I thought I'd upgrade to the new Leopard OSX 10.5 but I still have CS2 Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator. I'm having crashes in InDesign when placing any art or making pdf's from within the program. I'm using both the pull down menu and shortcuts but now it keeps crashing. I can't work this way. I went onto the Adobe site and it said there are no fixes!!! So are there any...? Will I have to reload the old systen back on or bite the bullet and buy new CS3!!!
Help?
Jana

Unfortunately, most of the threads here fail to offer a solution and simply berate the user for upgrading their OS. Whether right or wrong, the Apple bashing does nothing to solve the problem. I have upgraded to OS X 10.5 and still use CS2. I see no point in upgrading to CS 3, since from the threads here it seems even that is not compatible.
Using CS2 and 10.5, I have found a workaround for the file selector box crash. This works on both my systems (a G5 desktop and a G4 laptop). Hope this can help someone.
Workaround steps:
- Launch InDesign
- Select "Open" from the file menu
- Open an InDesign file (any file)
- Close or use the file (doesn't matter)
After doing the above in the order described, I can use ID2 as usual. Double-click a file to open it, import graphics, export pages, "save as", etc. The trick for me is to open a file through the "open" command in the file menu immediately after launching ID.
This works for me every time. If I launch ID by double-clicking a doc, ID will always crash. The crash causes more crashes because of auto-recovery. When you re-launch ID and the recovered file opens, that will trigger the crash again when accessing the file selector. If you are working on a file and ID crashes, re-launch. The recovered doc(s) will open. Hit cmd-S to save (Save without the file selector box). Then close the file and quit ID. Start over as above to avoid future crashes.
Hope this helps someone. I have had ID running without a crash for weeks at a time using this method.

  • Indesign CS2 Crashing with Tiger Server

I have two different companies dealing with exactly the same problem as such:
G5 Xserve (OS X Server 10.4.7) Indesign CS2. While working on files from the server, tools such as gradient, transparency, etc will consistently cause Indesign to Quit. If we drag the file over to the local desktop to work on it, it's fine. This problem just started cropping up with one machine at company "A" about a month ago. It has now affected more than one machine at company "A" and also just appeared today at company "B". Any solutions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

  • Indesign CS2 Crashes when I try to export a document as pdf

I'm using Indesign CS2 on a G5 using OS X version 10.4.11. As i try to export my document indesign completely crashes after I click the 'export' button in the pdf options window. I've tried saving using different pdf options and different document types but it still happens?

Does your document contain any EPS files..? If so try re-saving them. InDesign can work with native photoshop & illustrator files.
Failing that check your fonts as there may be a corrupt one lurking about...

  • Indesign CS3 Crash No autorecovery or with Time Machine

Just finished days work. Had Time Machine running. OS is Leopard on 2Ghz Intel Core Duo IMac. Working on 25 MB File (text, I Photo images and Illustrator diagrams). Seemed to crash as I tried to scroll back through it. Unlike other crashes it came up with a message to say it couldn't recover it - can't remember the details as I thought it would all be on Time Machine anyway. But all I can now recover when I open that file is a version last modified on 22 May (today is 28 May and I have worked on it every day between those dates and has been saved regularly. Also Time Machine has somehow reverted back to only having copies for that date 22 May as well, despite the fact that it saved an updated version hourly between those dates (or so I thought). Hope this is clear. Any help much appreciated. Especially some way of recovering my 4 days work.

Sorry to hear about your problems.
    (1) We really do not recommend use of MacOX 10.5 (i.e., Leopard) until Apple provides more fixes.
    (2) You really should never rely on magic to retain older versions of documents you are actively working on. A much better strategy is to occasionally use the "save copy as" to save a snapshot of where you currently are with your work under an appropriately descriptive name. Alternatively, on a regular basis, possibly every hour or two if I am really actively working on a long, complex document, I save the document (often using "save as"), exit InDesign, copy the document (and any associated assets) to a safe backup location, and then restart InDesign and start editing some more.

  • Constant lock ups with Leopard!

I find myself having to hold in the power button to turn my computer off almost everyday now! I am not sure what is causing these constant lock ups! Ever since upgrading to Leopard have I noticed this. Yesterday It happened when trying to open iTunes. Today it happened when I clicked on MAIL. The icon just bounces in the dock and nothing happens. I hit FORCE QUIT and that doesn't work either.
Do I need to clear something out or get rid of something? Even when I try to restart my computer sometimes that will lock up too! The only way to get around any of these issues is to hold in the power button to turn the whole computer off, wait a few seconds and turn it back on. Once its back on, then I have full functionality out the computer again but its getting on my nerves that I have to do this all to often!
I think they are some cool features with Leopard but I am experiencing way to many bugs/problems with it to be 100% happy with it.
As I am writing this posting, I just clicked on my APPLE icon in the top left of the screen and then clicked ABOUT THIS MAC to make sure I was using the most current version, and NOTHING happened!

Try reinstalling. It sounds like you did an upgrade from an earlier version that may have been corrupt to start with. You may be able to do the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Indesign CS5 crash during startup - problem with Graphics.rpln

I work in an architectural company and already several of our computers have experienced this very rare and unusual behaviour. During start up of Indesign (not clicking on any file but just launching Indesign) it crashes with the following error:
"Adobe Indesign CS5 has stopped working"
We use Windows 7 64bit, so the first step I did - I went into Application Log which says, so appears to be a problem with Graphics.rpln.

I have tried everything I could think of - removed and reinstalled Adobe CS5, manually removed Adobe folders under %Appdata%\Local and %Appdata%\Remote folders (why can't Adobe delete those things during uninstallation is always a total mystery), changed video adapter drivers, cleaned Temp folders, everything I knew...
None of the other apps like Photoshop or Illustrator CS5 malfunction - only Indesign. What is going on?
Can it conflict with other software we use? We have Bentley Microstation, 3D Max, Office 2010, Kaspersky Antivirus and LOGMEIN installed on this computer...Any clues, guys?

Looks to me like you've never installed any of the patches. Last patch for CS5 was 7.0.4, so I'd start with that and see if ti helps.

  • InDesign cs6 crashes when exporting objects with drop shadows to interactive PDF

I am using the trial version of InDesign CS6 on a mac OSX 10.7.4  I need to export my document as an interactive PDF. I have found that the export works fine so long as none of the objects within my document have a drop shadow. However, if I add a drop shadow to any object (text, images, or video) InDesign will crash when I try to export. I am adding the drop shadow by selecting the object and then choosing Object > Effects > Drop Shadow. Is there another method I should be using to add the shadow if I want to export to an Interactive PDF?

Hi Peter, thanks for the response. Yes, I have tried creating a new blank project and adding one text object with a drop shadow and then exporting to Interactive PDF, and I experienced  the same result. I tried replacing my preferences as you suggested and found that it did not have any affect.
I continued developing my InDesign document without using any drop shadows and began to experience the same type of crashing under two more circumstances. 1. When relinking assets in my Links panel. 2. When exporting to interactive PDF with interactive objects that are being clipped (I get a warning telling me I have clipped objects before I export; when I click export I experience the same crash.) I have tried exporting the same file to a print (non-interactive) PDF and experienced no crashing.
I thought I should mention that I am using a retina display mac book pro with 16GB RAM. Could my graphics cards or the configureation of my machine be causing my issue?
    Thanks so much,

  • InDesign CS2 crashes on boot (Vista)

    Hi there
I have just installed InDesign on this machine, and as soon as it tries to initialize, I get "Adobe InDesign CS2 has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
When I try and start ID again, it searches for a solution, and then loops back to the same error message.
    Can anyone offer a solution?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi there
I had already set that up, and it had no effect, but Ive just gone back into the properties, and disabled visual effects. InDesign launched with this error:
the installer seems to have written the wrong AUM Application ID
But then seemed to run fine... Ill test it with a couple of jobs, and hope for the best.
    Thanks for your help

  • InDesign CS5 crashes on startup (mac snow leopard)

Hi all, just upgraded to Snow Leopard from Tiger. Was on CS3 and just upgraded to CS5 from the disc.
Looked through the forums and nothing seems to work, here's what I've done so far with no luck:
    trashed the prefs/cache
    validated all of my fonts
uninstalled using the adobe cleaner tool
    reinstalled/uninstalled several times
    updated to latest CS5 version
    got rid of Rapport
have plenty of RAM and disc space
The only solution I've found is to create a new user account, where InDesign will open. However, this isn't ideal as it means all my fonts, music, photos, etc is not there. So I've got three options:
    1) Figure out what keeps crashing InDesign (and Illustrator but not Photoshop for some weird reason) and not have to change my whole machine for this program
    2) Figure out how to move everything easily into new user account (ideas anyone?)
    3) Wipe the hard drive and start over (as you can guess this is a total last resort!)
    Thanks in advance!

Bob, what are your thoughts on backing up the drive first, via Time Machine, then wiping the drive, and install Snow Leopard, and restore the drive from Time Machine?
I'm not Bob, but I think this is a TERRIBLE idea. The point is to get a fresh install of the OS. How would restoring a bad image help with that?

  • Mac InDesign CS6 crashes when adding files with links to Windows network into book

Our Mac network is unstable, so I tested linking InDesign CS6 files (on my Mac's hard drive) to .jpg files on our company's very stable Windows network rather to the same .jpg files on our Mac network. I tested with 4 simple, small InDesign files. When these 4 files were linked to images on a storage drive on our Mac network, I could drag all 4 files into a book and export the book to PDF. But when linked to the same images on the Windows network, while each file would open fine with no errors, and while I could generate a PDF from each individual file, the moment I dragged the 4 files into a book, InDesign crashed, generating pages of information in the crash report form.
I have no problem making 500 page manuals on my hard drive, comprised of about 50 InDesign files, with links to THOUSANDS of image files on a storage drive on our Mac network. Is there some trick to making a book with files linked to images on a Windows network? If there is no simple answer, who could I call to set us up so this will work?
I'm using InDesign CS6 for Mac, totally updated, version 8.0.1.
    Thank you so much!!!

It seems, this is all you need to do... your message isn't clear as to whether you've fixed your issue or not.
    [Extract from link above]...
"Add the network share(s) to your Favorites in Bridge and drag assets into your layouts from Bridge or Mini-Bridge. The paths stored in the InDesign links will be full network paths, and both sets of machines should have no problem finding them. This is the more usual InDesign workflow."

  • InDesign CS2 crashing, "cannot open file"

I am suddenly often getting this message: "Cannot open the file. Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application"
The program then crashes, or (when it doesn't) opens and refuses to import Photoshop files, and THEN crashes. In both cases I lose the file.
Will upgrading to CS3 solve these problems or exacerbate them?? Is there a way to correct the problem without upgrading?
    I'm running Mac OSX 10.4.11 on a 2.1 GHz PowerPC G5.

I missed Janet's file It ended up in my spam folder. Sorry Janet.
The file will not open for me in CS2 or CS3 same message. Were you using any filter or plugin that you may have disabled? I think the file is corrupt. some company was looking for corrupt files I forget who. I would send it to them.
in addition the HartmanCover-ad.tif will not open either. I get a "Could not complete your request because an unexpected end-of-file was encountered.
this is most likely your problem.

  • InDesign CS2 crashing on iMac

I bought a new (refurbished) 2010 iMac (3.2GHz Intel Core i3) and loaded my old CS2 on it and InDesign crashes every time I try to print or make a PDF. Any way around this other than upgrading to CS5? Thanks

Before you do...if you're using a suite you must upgrade the entire suite.
Additionally, there are several options for upgrading and you must buy the CS2/CS3 to CS5 upgrade: http://amzn.to/dNS154

I have suddenly started experiencing chronic InDesign crashes. I am running version 4.0.4 on Mac OS 10.4.8 on a PowerMac Dual G5 3.5 GB of RAM. Checking my fonts and deactivating them, deleting preferences, a complete InDesign reinstall, recreation of a couple of my major documents from scratch and exporting the documents to .inx format and re-opening is still resulting in crashes. • Using InDesign CS2 on OS 10.6

We bought some new Macs running on OS 10.6. Unfortunately, our editorial system is still using InDesign CS2. And when we print, Indesign CS2 crashes. This has happened in all the Macs running on 10.6.
Has anyone experienced this and solved it? We do have InDesign CS4 but it's a hassle opening the CS2 page just to print it.

If you're going to stick with an editorial platform that only runs well on PowerPC architecture with old versions of the OS, you are buying into the idea of keeping old hardware running until such time as you upgrade or abandon the editorial platform. There are ways to buy obsolete Mac hardware - I suggest you spend some time on lowendmac.com and start developing your old-hardware-maintenance plan.
You might be able to find a better workaround (can you export PDFs and print those?) but no matter what you do, you will be duct-taping something together. Ever since 10.6 came out, we've been seeing these threads on a regular basis, and never once has anyone posted a fix that was not made out of duct tape.
