InDesign CS2 - Word Template?

Is there any way to create an InDesign (mac) document that can be used as a Word (pc) template (so that the pc people can use it as stationery)? This one has got me beat - tried pdf (blurry), saving as .tif/eps (quality not good).
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi Bob or Anyone Else who can offer advise,
You've helped me out in the past and your advise has always been stellar. I've got the same situation. We've designed a 2 color logo: PMS 535 and Black. Our client wants the logo electronically placed into Word and PowerPoint (in addition to the letterhead, business cards, etc. which will be professionally printed as a 2-color job). I've already set up the word template but his office printers are giving us unexpected results. He is working on PC's- we are on Macs. Is it best to give him CMYK or a RGB files? Do we have any hope of gaining any control over his output?
I've set up a grid of subtle color shifts (in a CMYK jpg) for him to print out so we can try to try to match the PMS 535 but I'm not certain if this is the best approach (and again: RGB or CMYK). I've been searching the archives but most discussions are about calibrating postscript printers and a bit over my head. What I did find suggested that windows and windows printers work in RGB which is why I am wondering if that is what we should be giving him.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your help,
Julie

  • Acrobat 7, Leopard InDesign CS2, printing but with poor results

I know there are issues with Leopard and Acrobat, I'm just trying to see if my problem falls into that category or if it is something else.
I am running Leopard 10.5.1 on a MacBook Pro with CS2. In general, I am able to print with my PDF printer and get good results from several programs but NOT from InDesign (CS2, 4.0.5). I've got a two page document with lots of small text and graphics, which used to print just beautiful as a PDF (for my students to download from a course website). Now, however, the fonts in the PDF have terrible resolution and look awful! But, I can still generate beautiful PDFs with terrific looking fonts from Mellel (a word processing program I use for Hebrew). This is using the same settings in Distiller and in my Adobe PDF printer.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks, Karyn

  • Printing graphics from InDesign CS2 to an HP 4000 PS Laserjet

My HP 4000 Laserjet will not print InDesign CS2 documents that have pictures, other graphics, or objects created in InDesign with either a drop shadow or feathered.
I have an HP Laserjet 4000 which I previously used with Pagemaker 6.5. I could set the screen lpi and angle values for exactly as it needed to be using the Acrobat Distiller PPD and print documents (with pictures and graphics) to the post script printer with no problem. Now I am using Adobe InDesign CS2 and I don't seem to have same the printing options and control that I had with Pagemaker. But mainly, in Pagemaker, when I printed a document I could select the HP 4000 PS printer in the Print Document box and it listed Acrobat Distiller in the PPD box which is what I used.
Now with InDesign CS2, when I select the HP 4000 PS printer it only shows the HP 4000 PS series ppd (and this may be correct). Although I can still set the values for screening (lpi) and screen angles and screened objects that are created in InDesign will print to whatever screen values I selected, the document will not print when pictures and other graphics are placed into the document or if an object created in InDesign has a drop shadow or is feathered. When I remove the graphics and drop shadow, it will print, however, another problem is that it will not print certain fonts properly (leaving out certain letters in certain words - for instance the "l" in "floor".)
Is this a compatibility issue between this older Laserjet and InDesign -- is there another driver that I need -- or am I overlooking something that's obvious? I'd appreciate someone's help who may know what the problem is so I won't be doing the trial and error thing.
    Thanks,
    Cliff Stone

Thanks everyone for their input. As far as the memory shortage, I'm pretty sure that's not the problem. I can create a document in Pagemaker of only 200KB that prints fine and the convert the same document to ID and it fails to print.
I think Dov is right about the 4000 because I remember when the printer was new, there were some incompatibility issues with Pagemaker that I had to work around. The Adobe people told me back then that Pagemaker and HP postscript printers didn't get along very well.
I'll check with HP again (I've already written to them twice with no response) and see if the firmware upgrade Dov mentioned is still available, however, even though this 4000 has been very durable and a real workhorse for me, it may be time to put it out to pasture and invest in a new Postscript laserjet.
    Any recommendations?
    Thanks again for everyone's help.

  • Roundtripping text between Indesign and Word?

I'm not exactly sure which forum this belongs on, so I'll start here.
Our company does a lot of repurposing. We pickup recipes from a magazine and publish them in a book, or vice-versa. Our current system of picking up this content is inefficient and requires the text to be restyled every time it gets picked up. We're trying to implement a workflow that will retain the styling and eliminate duplication, but I'm encountering a couple problems:
    1) When pasting text from InDesign into a word doc, it retains the styles UNLESS those styles are pre-defined in word. For example, if the word template has a pre-defined style called Recipe - head and you paste text that has that style, the text will no longer have that style applied after pasting; it will be set to Normal.
    2) I can use InCopy to pickup the text and then export to RTF, but the text comes into Word with all the formatting applied (sizes, fonts, colors, etc.). This makes it very hard for the editors to read when they're reviewing the copy and making changes.
    So my questions are these:
    1) Is there a way to map styles from InDesign to Word? I'd like to set up the word doc to have all the styles names without the formatting so it's easier to read. OR,
    2) Is there a way to strip out all text formatting EXCEPT the style names themselves? We want it to retain the style names so we can map them to the InDesign styles when we import the text.
If anyone has dealt with these issues, I would really appreciate the help. My searching thus far has yielded little in the way of results.
    Thanks in advance,
    Matthew

Because I have very few translators who can work in ID, I use a workflow like this all the time. If you're handy with VBA, you can write a script that
will go through all of the styles in your exported RTF and replace the formatting in the InDesign styles with something much simpler. For example, I'll change all serif styles to TNR and all sans styles to Arial, because I can assume that my less technically competent translators who panic when asked to install a font would at least have those two fonts installed. I can change the paragraph indents and spacing to something much simpler than what is in the ID doc with a single click. When I place that translated RTF back into InDesign, I can replace the translator's, ah, "formatting choices" with the original style definitions, so I can simply Clear Overrides and get something pretty close to the original formatting, only requiring minor cleanup.
If you're not handy with VBA, and yet expect to use Word as an integral part of your workflow, I suggest that you get busy studying.
Edit: Actually, tagged text is a pretty good idea, if you're willing to do some post-processing. The kind of editor who insists on unstyled text in Word is unlikely to be willing to edit tagged text in a raw text editor (or to use TagEditor or some other tool intended for manipulating tagged text).

  • Import InDesign CS2 Interchange format into CS5

I have a lot of InDesign CS2 templates and documents. Since it is not possible to open them directly in InDesign CS5, I have used Interchange format from InDesign CS2 and everything worked beautifully.
But there is a problem. Every text frame from InDesign CS2 Interchange file opened in InDesign CS5, has some info at bottom right corner that consists of a value like 56W (width) and number of characters that are present in the text frame, along with column count (if present) and count of characters that are overflowing.
Interchange format from CS3 InDesign does not do that. There is no way to create and display those info with text frame created in CS5. If text frame from CS2 Interchange format is converted to picture frame, and back to text frame, that info is also gone.
I personally find very useful that info displayed at bottom right corner of text frame from CS2 file (except "w" value that does not change even when text frame is resized).
How can this info be displayed on every text frame created in InDesign CS5 ?

Indeed files from InDesign CS2 can be opened directly in CS5 ... there is something wrong with files from CS2 ... I suspect on one of installed plug-ins, so lets back to the interesting case of bug "Interchangable CS2 file format in CS5".
This "problem" can be replicated allways:
    1) Create document in InDesign CS2
    2) create 2 text frames with some text
    3) export document as InDesign CS2 Interchangable format
    4) open that file in InDesign CS5 and you will get bottom corner info from screenshot.
I would really like to see option to enable this "bug" in CS5 since it makes Info panel redundant in case of text frames.
I guess that value in front of "W" is some sort of width value ... I calculated and came up with 1W~3.25mm ... W Value is rounded (integer) value so some variations are noticable.
C stands for nuber of text columns.
first number in brackets is value of characters in text frame with spaces that is displayed. second is number of characters that are overflowed.
posted ID_CS2.jpg iz zip file actually. just change extension to zip. there are 2 files. one INDD from CS2 and one INX. just save link as .zip (Save target as).

Ah -- you are placing the PDF, right? Use the Word file instead. A PDF file is not a text file, so you get it as an image.

    OS.10.3.9
    InDesign CS2
    Acrobat Distiller 7.0

  • InDesign CS2 - Korean Language Support

    All:
I am running InDesign CS2 v.4.0, and would like to place a MS Word document that includes Korean text. Currently, the text is displayed as sqaures in InDesign once the document has been placed.
Ideally I'd also be able to copy/paste Korean text from the Word doc to the InDesign layout.
Does InDesign support Korean text? Is there an update that can be applied to the app to allow for this?
    Matt

ID "supports" it -- for a given value of "support".
What you see is most likely because the current
    i font
in your InDesign does not contain these Korean characters. Select another font of which you are sure it has these characters, and all should be fine.
Fonts that support lots and lots of characters do not appear in the standard (sorted) position in the font list. They can be found at the very bottom, grouped by ... something... (perhaps character subset support). Try Arial Unicode MS for starters -- just to check if it works!! Then pick a nice one.
By the way, Korean is written from Left to Right, isn't it? If it's
    i Right-to-Left,
well, then I was wrong and it's not supported :-( And you can't buy an upgrade either. RTL languages work only with the ME (= Middle East) version of ID, and that's not by Adobe.

  • After crash, users cannot use MS Office or InDesign CS2

    Hi,
Our server had a couple of kernel panics last night. Once I got it back up and running, our 10 client computers could not access their user databases for Entourage, MS Word would not open, and Adobe InDesign CS2 would not work.
All the clients were running when the server went down and I'm assuming the user folders got corrupted somehow since most of them were running these apps at the time.
I've tried everything short of re-installing the software. Would this fix the problem? The MS apps are generally giving me an error code -5000 along with a dameon error, and that Entourage cannot access the user database. InDesign just reports a serious error and that it is shutting down. The error report has too many lines of code for me to decipher.
Our server is a G4 DP 1.25 w/ 2GB of RAM, 500GB mirrrored RAID drive setup running OSX Tiger Server 10.4.9. The user's home folders are stored on the server... no user information is kept on the client machines.
Any suggestions today (Sunday) would be greatly appreciated. We've got a newspaper to put out in the morning and I've been up all night already. It is going to be a long day...
    Alan

Okay... got it figured out. It was actually pretty simple. I had never completely shut down the whole system at one time after the crash. Router, server, switches and clients... all together at one time (I had rebooted the server and clients separately though)...
So, after bringing everything down, then back online one by one, things started to work again. Lesson learned.
There were a few settings on the server that needed to be reset (DNS... POP in Mail services), but for the most part, things just worked once back online.
    Thanks for chipping in.
    Cheers,
    Alan

  • Font issue in Indesign CS2

Hi. I just received a new computer and although I have not had any issues with the Palatino Adobe font in the past, for some reason it no longer displays properly (pinked out).  I have uninstalled the font through Adobe Type manager, checked my PS Font folder to make sure there are no Palatino fonts (either True Type, Open Type or Adobe) left in that folder and then reinstalled the font. I then rebooted my computer and although I went through these steps and the only Palatino font on my computer now is an Adobe one, In Design still cannot read the font. I then opened up MS Word, Photoshop, and Illustrator to see if I could access the Palatino font, and I had no issues at all. It seems it's only the In Design program that has an issue reading the font.
Any suggestions at all would be most welcomed because this is the main font that our company uses and my job depends on it.
    Thanks,
    Colourss

I had similar issue with Helvetica Medium and Bold fonts. All other variants of Helvetica were displayed nicely in Indesign CS2, but those two were missing. Indesign CS3 was able to display all the fonts correctly. I tried deleting the AdobeFntXX.lst files and uninstalling fonts, copying into different directories, but nothing helped with CS2. Finally I started tweaking the AdobeFntXX.lst file under Fonts folder in the Indesign CS2 installation directoty and got the Medium and Bold fonts working.
    Here's what I did:
    1. Removed problematic fonts from ATM and Windows fonts folder
    2. Copied fonts into Fonts folder under CS2 installation directory
    3. Deleted AdobeFntXX.lst file under Fonts directory
    4. Started InDesign CS2, so new AdobeFntXX.lst file were generated
    5. Edited the AdobeFntlstXX.lst file as follows:
For Helvetica bold font I replaced dash in the font name with whitespace:
    FontName:Helvetica-Bold   ->   FontName:Helvetica Bold
For Helvetica Medium font I added text "Medium" to the font name:
    FontName:Helvetica   ->   FontName:Helvetica Medium
After these changes InDesign CS2 started to display both fonts. I guess it has something to do with font familynames or something like that.
I know this is not exactly same case as yours, but hopefully it can help you to find the resolution.

  • Arial Black font problems in InDesign CS2

    Hi there,
I'm having a bit of a problem with the Arial Black font in InDesign CS2.  I recently got a new computer running Windows XP. The computer has had  MS Service Pack 3 installed. When I installed my old fonts onto the new  computer and booted up InDesign, I noticed there was no Arial Black font, only Arial Black Italic. When I looked under the Arial group of fonts a Black version of the font was there, but on my old machine Arial Black is a separate font group. I've tried deleting the font cache and adding the fonts to the InDesign fonts folder as well, but it still doesn't register as a separate font family. I've also tried installing an older version of Arial Black (2.35 from 2004) and emptying the font cache but still no joy. The  problem is I work on a newspaper and this font is quite common, and is  used on our templates, so when I receive a page I need to change the  font, which isn't ideal. Interestingly, the file name of the font is  ariblk.ttf, but when you look at the icon it appears to be OpenType. The  Arial Black Italic font is called ARBLI__.TTF and has a TrueType icon, and this appears as a separate font family in InDesign. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance.

I'd give it a go anyway. And please keep in mind that CS2 is the earliest version eligible for upgrade pricing.
At some point, if the current policy holds, you'll be out of the upgrade loop and will have to pay full price.
    Bob

  • Indesign CS2 "selection to new document" script?

Hi, just changing over to Indesign CS2 (i know! should be cs5 soon apparently), and noticed the scripting seems to be quite powerful with this software, i dont suppose anybody has created a script that would paste the currently selected object into a new document?  Would be handy when we're making templates for a self-build system to make it all on one document, then paste the various size boxes onto new documents ready to configure and upload!
