Indesign CS3 2nd Monitor Issue

Hi there,
For some reason, recently, I can't get my indesign document to shift over to my 2nd monitor.
I have no problem moving the toolbars and palettes, they appear fine - but when I try and drag the actual document over to the other monitor it simply doesn't appear. It isn't locked as I can move it over to the right, it just won't show on the second monitor.
I'm sure this has not always been the case and it is proving frustrating as I want to have two documents open on seperate monitors.
Is there a preference that I have turned off in indesign?
Any help would be highly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Matt
P.s I have attached a screen grab to make this clearer

That's because it can't be done in CS3. The document must remain within the application.
The only way to accomplish this is to stretch the application across both monitors.
This capability does exist in CS4.

  • 2nd Monitor issue

I've been using a 2nd Monitor (ViewSonic 1080p) with my MacBook for several years.  After recent upgrade to Snow Leopard, MacBook no longer recognizes the 2nd monitor in the Preferences.  Monitor/cables are fine and work with another laptop OK. Do I need a software upgrade?, or will I be forced to purchase an Apple monitor.  Puzzled

Here are the specs for your HP Pavilion p6-2029uk Desktop Computer. According to the specs this model has Intergrated AMD HD Graphics that have been disabled by the factory installed discrete PCI Express x16 AMD Radeon HD 6450. The DVI-D port and VGA port behind the "plastic covers" will not work unless the discrete graphics card is removed.
    Assuming the discrete AMD Radeon HD 6450 card has a DVD-I port and an HDMI port, you should be able to connect the monitors as follows;
    Computer > HDMI-to-DVI cable > HP 2011 monitor
Computer > DVI-to-VGA adapter > VGA cable > secondary monitor
    Alternatively, you could remove the discrete AMD Radeon HD 6450 card and use the integrated onboard DVI-D and VGA ports as follows;
Computer > DVI cable > HP 2011 monitor
Computer > VGA cable > secondary monitor

  • Indesign CS3 printing alignment issues with Konica Bizhub

    Hi,
I am designing documents in ID CS3 to print inhouse on our Konica Minolta BizHub 350 through a Fiery. I will set up a document with at least .375 inch border all the way around. I'll print it, sometimes the documents are duplex, and it's all good. A month later I will go to print this document again, same print set up options and everything is shifting to one side, sometimes as much as .5 inch. Our printer technicians have been out here and found that we did not have the appropriate Fiery driver. So we downloaded and installed that and everything seemed to be fine until today, I go to print a document that had previously been set up and everything is shifting to the side. I went in and selected the paper size rather than let it be defined by driver and it helped a little but it's still off. Same thing happens on business cards. I'll set up the business card template in InDesign, futz with it to make sure it's printing within the card size (I can't tell you how many sheets of business card paper I've had to toss trying to work this out) and works great. Next time I go to print the cards, everything is shifted up by a quarter of an inch.
This makes no sense to me. Am I doing something wrong in InDesign? Has anyone else had this problem? I just can't spend hours realigning every document that I've already created every time I have to print them. Please help.
    Mina

You may see about getting upgraded to the Creo print management software for the BizHub over the Fiery. Despite it having its quirks it does pretty well.
We have had great luck with our BizHub though it only runs 6 hours per day. Only have to have service for PM kits. I don't know about those who require so much more service on theirs, perhaps they aren't built for 24/7 continuous operation. Ours certainly has no trouble being ran through the little one shift routine we put it through. Again, we don't really push the thing, just a hair under a quarter million impressions a year with a variety of odd stocks. For a specialty machine that does our short runs and one offs it is a really nice machine, though not something I'd just hit "print 1000" without reviewing an initial proof.
If you need to have it serviced that frequently and are getting inconsistent results that you speak of I think you are running the machine incorrectly. The gentleman that runs our was previously running a hand crank letter press for the last twenty years. It and a couple black and white production printers are his only exposure to computers at all. You should have someone educate you on how to properly run the machine if you are continually running into these problems, or get a $300 PC and a copy of Adobe Reader to do the printing for you like we do.

  • InDesign CS3 and monitor flicker

I have already read this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/326464 and that did not come up with any useful pointers.
I have seen a problem occur on a couple of designers Macs (OS 10.4.11, InDesign 5.0.4) where the monitor seams to flicker slightly whenever they are using InDesign. I have launched the other CS Suite applications and swapped betweent them but the problem only ever occurs when InDesign is the active application.
More specically, the flickering only effects any windows (or usually just the desktop image/colour) that are behind InDesign.

The drivers are built into the actual OS so driver updates usually install as part of the OS updates. There were no more updaes to 10.4 after 10.4.11, before Apple moved on to 10.5 so that is not an option.
Thank you for your answer though.

  • InDesign CS3 - textbox format issue

Using ID CS3 on Windows XP Pro. Hopefully a basic one for someone out there, but has been bugging me all day. I created a text frame on the pasteboard (outside of my page) with 6pt font and 7pt leading. All good. But when i drag the text box onto my page, it spreads the leading out to about 12pt (although if you select the text, it still says 6pt font and 7pt leading). Drag it back off the page and it is perfect again. I am assuming there is some presets for the document itself but cannot find where to change this anywhere. Thanks for your help.

Look at the paragraph panel: you have the text adjusted to the baseline grid. That grid does not extend to the pasteboard, that's why your text looks good there.

  • InDesign CS3 crashes without error when opening any 2nd InDesign file

Issue: InDesign CS3 crashes without error and remains resident in memory if we have an InDesign file open and attempt to open a second InDesign file.
    OS: Win XP SP2
    InDesign Version: 5.0.2
Hardware: Dell Precision WorkStation T3400, 4 gigabytes of memory, Intel Core2 Quad processor Q6600
Details: No messages in the event viewer about the problem. We renamed the InDesign Defaults and the InDesign Saved Data file. We removed Creative Suite, restarted and then reinstalled Creative Suite (I could not remove and reinstall InDesign individually). We have created a new Windows profile for this user. I have one computer having the trouble. Other InDesign installations are working fine. This computer has 559 files in C:\windows\fonts. Other people that are not having the problem have a larger number of fonts installed.
The issue is not file specific. We are not running out of memory as I checked the task manager after the first InDesign document is open.
Why is opening a second document different than opening the first document?

    Hello Peter and Josh,
I'd just like to assert that I am having the exact same problem as Josh. I've spent the time to go through the steps listed above and have found the same results.
The issue as we see it multiple times daily is as follows:
    (1) User opens File1 (everything works fine)
    (2) User goes to open File2 (via explorer or via file->open) or print File1
    (3) The User Interface for ID disappears (InDesign.exe still appears in Task Manager and is NOT listed as "Not Responding", ID does not appear in the Task Bar)
    (4) The only way to continue work is to End Task/End Process InDesign.exe and relaunch.
No error messages appear, no error logs are created(that I can find). Non-related concerns caused us to upgrade this users PC. With a completely new install we are still having the problems. The systems are listed as follows:
OS: Win XP SP2 (fully updated minus SP3)
    InDesign Version: 5.0.2
Newest Hardware: Custom Built Computer, 4GB RAM installed (3.24 recognized by windows), Intel Core2 Quad processor Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz
OS: Win XP SP2 (fully updated minus SP3)
    InDesign Version: 5.0.2
Older Hardware: Custom Built Computer, Intel D945GTP Motherboard, 2GB RAM installed, Intel Pentium D processor @ 2.8Ghz
    Troubleshooting:
    (1) Alt+Space and M then using arrow keys moves every other window the user had opened other than In-Design. The user has two monitors. (a) 1280x1024 and (b) 1200x1600 (yes she uses the monitor rotated 90 degrees
    (2) Log files - Non exist in the C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS3 folder. I've also done a search across the entire hard drive for any "*.log" files, none of which were adobe related.
    (3) Default Printer - Changing the default printer to Adobe PDF is not really an option. I was able to convince the user to temporarily switch to a different networked printer and await the results (most likely today or tomorrow it should recreate)
    (4) /3GB switch - Getting that last 700 something MB of memory isn't an issue. I've run MemTest.exe on all the available system memory overnight in a "burn in" test. The system ran fine the sticks were nice and warm when I got in from all the hard work :)
    (5) Order of Opening - The problem repeates regardless of order. The trick seems to be opening File2 or printing File1 (I had the user only work on one file at a time (required her to close any open files before opening the next, that wasn't fun for my user but the system didn't crash on opening in this scenario, just on printing. Obviously not a permanent work around)
Any help here would be much appreciated as this has been plaguing us for months now.

  • Booklet issues with InDesign CS3 on Mac, and Xerox WorkCentre 7655 booklet maker

I'm having several booklet making issues I'm hoping someone can help me with.
I am on a MacPro, OS X Leopard, InDesign CS3. We have a Xerox WorkCentre 7655 that has booklet making capability. The network server is a PC with Microsoft 2003 server on it.
The booklet I am making uses two 11x17 trays - one for cover stock for the cover and one for regular 24 lb paper for the insides. The layout is single pages rather than spreads - spreads did not work at all.
From InDesign using the printer, the cover pages come out backwards and mirror image. The inside pages are upside down and on only half the page. I did not not InDesign file/booklet because that seemed to create even more problems with the Xerox booklet settings, and I don't know how to try InDesign booklet and not the Xerox settings.
I tried making a pdf and printing booklets from that. On the Macintosh, I can't figure out how to tell it the pages are 11x17 so it keeps giving me an error that the printer is waiting for 8 1/2 x 11.
I actually did get the booklets to print properly using the pdf file and a PC, but any gray graphics came out lilac. The text was black, and the covers were the correct colors - only the inside graphics were the wrong color.
I hope this makes some sense - I really need help. I've tried everything I can think of. I spent a lot of time with Xerox 1st and 2nd level support, and they have washed their hands of this. So I'm posting here hoping someone has some ideas.
Any other information anyone might need for this issue? Thanks so much.

I have a similar machine configuration and have had many issues printing to an HP 9500mfp. Pages rotate, mirror, 2-sided both print on same side. I've lost the "bookletmake" function. Jobs will not recognize paper trays (meaning I have to manually tell it which paper tray holds the tabloid stock). I've tried using the "Page Setup" dialog box to no avail. On occasion, I can get some of the features to work with a pdf printing from Acrobat. Sometimes, that doesn't work either - never with any kind of predictability. Printing to the HP 4700 is more reliable. I've downloaded the updated "Leopard" compatible driver from HP, but it fixed no issues. When I tried contacting tech support for HP, the replied that this is an OS issues and not with equipment, leaving me SOL.

  • MacBook Pro performance issues w/2nd monitor and FCP7

I have this MacBook Pro bought brand-new in January 2010:
      Model Name: MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 1
      Total Number Of Cores: 2
      L2 Cache: 6 MB
      Memory: 8 GB
      Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
and until today had never attached a second monitor to it. Today I hooked up my Samsung 24" to do some dual screen editing in Final Cut 7.0.3. I was unable to play back my video at full speed in the second monitor, and after a few seconds of skippy playback I'd get that error message about unable to play back video at full speed and to check my RT settings. I was using a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. My computer has no issues playing the video in the laptop's monitor at any resolution and any quality settings (I've never changed the RT settings or anything else in the menu ever but I tried every combination this time). I then tried using my TV as a 2nd monitor with an HDMI adapter. Same performance issues. I then tried my friend's newer 13" MBP 8,1 and it performed flawlessly with the same project & footage. I feel like my $3,000 computer should outperform a $1,200 one even if mine is a year and a half older. Any advice?
    Chris

Wow, you posted this perfectly to coincide with an identical problem, albeit using Logic Pro 9.1.5 rather than FCP.
Last week, I purchased a 23" external monitor to use alongside my "flagship" 2011 15" hi-res, 2.3 i7 Macbook Pro with 8Gb of RAM.
It is connected via a mini-DVI to D-sub analog (not that that should matter?) and all appeared fine.
The first issue I had was with my MBP's fan now running CONSTANTLY, when I have the second monitor attached. Even when the machine is completely idle.
When using the machine to record audio, this is a fairly hefty problem and not something I had anticipated - indeed why would I anticipate such a thing?
What is far, far worse though is that over the last few days I have had repeated problems with performance drop-outs and errors in Logic and I have trying to fathom out why. Realising that the only major system change made, was the above monitor connection, I ran some tests.
I restarted my MBP, no other apps were running and with my new 23" monitor attached acting as main display with MBP built in display on as secondary
I loaded up a fairly demanding Logic project which was hitting 40% to 60% CPU usage when using the built in MBP display last week
I ran activity monitor and had CPU usage history open
The above project now repeatedly overloads and playback halts in a given 8 bar section - with CPU at 80% most of the time
I disconnected the external display, no shut down, I just let the machine switch to the built in 15".
Started the same project, the same 8 bar section and hey presto - CPU usage back down to 40% to 60%
The above was reflected in the CPU usage history with the graph showing CPU use down by about a half, when running this Logic project WITHOUT the external display.
There is a very useful benchmark Logic project that has been used as a test by many users to gauge Logic performance on given Apple hardware.
The project has about 100 tracks pre-configured with CPU intensive plugins, designed to tax the CPU.
The idea is that you load up the project with tracks muted, press play and then unmute the tracks steadily until Logic us unable to play contiunously because of a system performance error.
On my MBP, with the external monitor NOT attached, I can play back around 50 of the audio tracks in this benchmark project.
With the monitor attached, I can get about 22 tracks playing.... which is actually a far worse a performance drop (-50% I think!?) than with the first example!
I did also try with just the external monitor attached and not the MBP display and performance was about 10% better than with dual monitors - so still extremely poor, to say the least.
This machine is the flagship MBP and has a dedicated AMD Radeon HD6750 GPU which should take care of most if not ALL graphics processing - I mean it's capable of running some pretty demanding games!
Putting aside the issue of constant fan noise, there is no reason AT ALL, why using an external monitor should tax the i7 CPU this way - it's not as though Logic is graphically demanding... far from it.
I am on 10.6.8, Logic 9.1.5, all apps up to date via "Software Update".
I will of course, be contacting Apple...

  • InDesign CS3 - Default Black color issue

Default Black color converted as Spot color in Indesign CS3.
I'm using default color "Black" in InDesign CS3. While creating PS from InDesign CS3 and convert it as PDF using Distiller 7 & 8, it would have changed as "Spot Color Black" instead of color "Black(CMYK)".
Open the swatch and duplicate the color "Black" and renamed as "C=0,M=0,Y=0,K=100". It would work properly. i.e. output PDF has CYMK black instead of Spot color.
We are unable to find/change globally because the Default color [Black] has both text and object.
We do not have any problem with this default black color in Indesign CS2.
It would be better if you provide a solid solution for this issue immediately. I need to send a test file to the printer on tomorrow (05/27/09).
I have attached Testing.pdf and screenshot for your reference.
Picture 1 shows the Default Black color converted as Spot color.
Picture 2 shows duplicate black color created from Default [Black] color and we don't find any issue.
    Thanks
    Johnson

First, this is a user forum, so all you'll get here is advice, not a "solid solution" from Adobe.
Second, the current versions of InDesign and Acrobat are 6 and 9, respectively, and there will never be any new patches issued for earlier versions. Adobe does not divert effort away from current development to patch old software.
This has been discussed here in the past few months. You should be able to find the thread if you search for keywords like spot black. For what it's worth, Acrobat 9 Pro's preflight does not detect a spot black in your sample PDF (though Pitstop might).
I'm curious why you feel the need to distill PDF rather than export (as I see you did with the file you posted)?

  • Indesign CS3 Crashes Randomly on Windows x64, Dual Monitor Setup

My coworker and I just had our computers upgraded Windows XP 64-bt on the following computer setup:
    Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz CPU
    8GB DDR3 RAM
    Gigabyte GA-EX58 Intel X58 Motherboard
    1TB Seagate ES.2 7200rpm 32MB Cache SATAII Hard  Drive
We're running CS3. Indesign keeps crashing on her machine, randomly from what we can tell. It runs fine on my machine.
We are running Indesign in compatibility mode for Windows XP on both machings (the crashing was much worse before we turned it on).
The only difference between my computer and the workstation where Indesign CS3 crashes is she has a dual monitor setup.
Any thoughts on what might be causing it?

Thanks for the heads up.We're actually kinda banking on Windows 7 to be a bit more stable and switch to that, but it's a long few months when your program crashes every few minutes.
I just realized that we don't have the latest update (5.0.4) on her machine, we've downloaded it and are hoping that will help to at least reduce the crashing...

  • Page Setup Issue with InDesign CS3 and Xerox DC240 w/ external Fiery

    Running on OS 10.4.11
Printing to Xerox DC2400 w/ External Fiery (driver v1.1 v3016.102)
    Application InDesign CS3 v. 5.0.2
When I send a document in CS3 to print, I have to constantly go to the page setup and select the proper paper size and orientation in order to print properly. In CS2, I was able to set all this by simply going to the Setup window and designating my paper size and orientation there. Does anyone have the same or similar issue? Were you able to resolve it? All suggestions are welcomed. I have contacted Xerox and they say that this is not an issue with their driver, they say that this is an application level issue!!
    Thank you.

I think I may have figured it out by trial and error. In the Pages palette, there's an option in the pulldown called "Panel Options". I set both sizes to "Small" and turned off "Thumbnails". Seems to have worked - knock wood. Presumably when thumbnails is turned on, InDesign is updating the contents of the document AND the pages palette thumbnail simultaneously. Anyway, that seems to have fixed it. Just wanted to post this solution FYI for anyone else who may be having this problem.

  • InDesign CS3 and SL - Image Import Issue

This one is fairly simple and there has been some discussion of it on the Adobe boards, but without any solid solution.
Issue: If you are in InDesign CS3 and you are using Command+D to replace an existing image, or you are importing a new image, InDesign will freeze up.
Work Around: Drag and drop the image into the image box directly from Finder.
Notes: I do not like this solution because it takes up more time, but it has been working for me this weekend. I reloaded InDesign CS3 completely and applied all of the updates, but it did not fix the issue.

    Hi, Curtis,
Just got SL today - am planning to put it on a MacBook Pro 17" intel that I share for work. We have C3 and had to replace another laptop recently so few $$$$ for upgrading problems until the economy picks up. We use CS3 and CS2 and a standalone InDesign 2 on three computers and so far use the CS3 for the final output. Here is the problem - if we place an image, it stays out of the ID file - our biggest client is fairly image heavy and they LOVE multiple minute revisions, so we don't want to have a bizillion copies of a developing doc with the extra heft of the actual images - esp when they want a lot of fine tuning on the images- by dragging and dropping don't you get an imbedded image? Did you find another solution since you first posted? Thanks

  • InDesign CS3 importing AI CS3 issue

    Hi all,
I've got an AI CS3 file that is set up with an 11x17 artboard. There are some colored boxes that flow outside the artboard, but I did that intentionally for a bleed. When I bring this AI file into InDesign CS3, the image is cropped to the 11x17 artboard. Where did the bleed go?
This is a huge issue as a lot of my fellow designers create backgrounds in AI to bring into InDesign and we need the bleed. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I realize making an eps avoids this issue but then you've got color issues, etc.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jen

    Here's the Illy CS2 Readme:
Adobe Illustrator CS2 has made a significant change in the way files
appear in other applications when saved in Illustrator. The artboard
(defined in the Document Setup dialog box, or when you create a new
file) will crop off anything that extends beyond it. Legacy files
(created in previous versions of Adobe Illustrator) are affected by this
new behavior when you save that legacy file in Adobe Illustrator CS2. If
you have artwork that extends beyond the edge of your artboard, either
move the artwork so that it fits on the artboard or increase the size of
the artboard in the Document Setup dialog box. This was an intentional
change in the way that Illustrator saves files, and ensures compliancy
with PDFX1a standards. This behavior is present in both Adobe
Illustrator CS2 and the 12.0.1 update, and will not be changed to the
old behavior in future versions of Adobe Illustrator.

  • Dual Monitor Issue: 2nd Display too large...can't adjust...web pages provide no scroll bars

I have two (2) HP S2031 LCD flat screen monitors.  They functioned perfectly with my old 32-bit machine (now gone).  I have just purchased a new 64-bit Windows 7 machine.  There are no error messages, but if I open a web page on the right (2nd) monitor, it does not display correctly.  It's as if it is a little too large.  I've tried adjusting the image using the Nividia software and using the monitor adjustments without improvement.  It is difficult getting out of that window because no scroll bars (vertical or horizontal) present themselves.  I am connecting through an iogear MiniView KVM switch to DVi-D sockets (with the four pins).
Is it a 64-bit driver issue?   I think not, because display #1 looks fine.  Could it be an iogear KVM firmware issue?
I dug out the HP driver disks that came with my monitors and installed them.  After I did that, I realized these were a 32-bit installation.  Now the monitor resolution won't go back to the higher, recommended level.  I don't see the software installation on the "add/remove programs" listing.  I'd like to change that.
BUT THE REAL ISSUE is that I need BOTH monitors to be able to display proper aspect independently.  Remember, I've been through both the Nividia adjustments menu and the built-in monitor adjustments menu and found nothing that worked so far.
Please help if you can.  This is for my trading business and I need it desperately.

When requesting assistance, please provide the brand and model name and/or product number of the computer in question. Without this information, it may be difficult or impossible to resolve your issue.
Have you swapped the two monitors to see if the problem follows the monitor or remains at the same location??? Try that first... if the problem follows the monitor, perform a hard reset by unpluging the monitor from power then holding the power button for 30 seconds. If the problem stays in the same location, you know both monitors are good and I would suspect the KVM isn't passing the "EDID" data to the computer. Removing the KVM should will tell you if this is the case.
Please post back with your troubleshooting results.
    Please send KUDOs

  • I'm having lots of issues with Dreamweaver CC on my 2nd monitor.

I cannot open new files, or create new files... the pane doesn't display. Works fine on my Macbook Pro Display, but not on the 2nd monitor using Thunderbolt. I also have lots of odd behaviors when attempting to edit code. The selection jumps all around... I tried uninstalling and reinstalling fresh, but still having the same issue. Has anyone else been experiencing this?

According to Adobe staff, a problem was introduced in Yosemite that is causing funkiness with secondary monitors is what I meant.
It seems related, not that it's the same exact issue.
Personally, I'd roll back to an older version of DW if that second monitor was necessary to my workflow within the program until Adobe or Apple push a patch.
