InDesign CS3 5.0.4 quits at startup in 10.5.6

I have a G5 Dual with 8GB of RAM, OSX 10.5.6 and use CS3.
I have not had any problems with InDesign until today! Everytime I start it it quits.
MESSAGE: The application InDesign has unexpectedly quit. Other CS3 components are fine.

Disk First Aid->Verify Volume and Repair Permissions would be my next stop then.
And if that doesn't work, you might try a cache cleaning utility of some sort--Cache Out seems like it is simple, free and does the job. Perhaps there is some cache that Safe Boot is bypassing?
After that, I am totally out of ideas though...
EDIT: Ok, one more idea--try the Buko method and create a new account. If it works in the new account, you know it's something corrupt in the other user's Library. If it doesn't work, you know it is broken machine-wide and probably time for a reinstall.

  • InDesign CS3 place image, application quits.

    Hi there
I've had a look around the forum but can't find an answer relating specifically to this problem. This is what happens:
Specific to this machine, if you create a picture box and go to place file, browse to the server and select the jpeg to be used. Image imports and all OK. On the second attempt either creating a new pic box or importing to the original, the place browse dialogue box defaults to the server (which is a windows server) as you would expect however, you cannot browse backwards through the columns on the server and when you click the lookup drop down list the application quits straight away. This problem does not occur if the files are local i.e. on the Desktop.
It seems the application has a problem looking at the server for the second time, if you start browsing from the root of the server on the very left column then this is not a problem but if you go to the drop down it quits!
    InDesign CS3 5.02
    Intel Mac 10.4.11
It seems to be mac specific not just the user profile as I have created another user profile with same issue.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Hi, thanks for your replies.
I have since upgraded the adobe suite to 5.04, I also get the problem in Photoshop CS3 as well.
What I don't understand is that a user with 5.02 ID and Tiger 10.4.8 (older versions than problem Mac) is not experiencing this problem.
Is it worth trying to put the crash report in to this thread even though it is very long?
I am not sure what else to put here.
    Thanks for your help.

  • InDesign CS3 Unexpectedly quits

Installed InDesign CS3 (actually all of Creative Suite 3 Standard) on a brand new MacPro Intel G5 running Leopard about 5 weeks ago (2 GB ram). (Ran all updates that were available at the time.) All CS3 products were working fine until InDesign started crashing when starting up with the "unexpectedly quit" message. (Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat portions still fine.) In Design had only been started 5-6 times since the initial install was completed.
Have since run OS 10.5.4 update and InDesign 5.0.3 update (and permissions repair, of course). Still will not start. Have dumped InDesign preferences and all Adobefnt.lst files. Have tried starting in safe mode and root user. Still crashes. (Three other older computers with same software - 2 Intel G5s and 1 G4 - are all fine, so it's not like I don't know what I'm doing at all!)
I'm thinking I may have to dump InDesign and reinstall it with all of its updates. I'd really rather figure out what caused the problem and fix that, so I don't have to deal with this yet again.
Upon InDesign startup, it seems to get past the "startup services" portion and crashes on something that has "..SING.." in it. This goes so fast, though (on every computer), that I cannot pick up on the complete phrase.
Anyone know what this "SING" thing is, and what could make it corrupt?
    Thanks.
    Ginny

Addendum to my original post . . . I found something about "SING" in the knowledgebase where it indicated permissions might need to be expanded on that file to include the user being able to read and right. I've done this but to no avail.
What loads immediately after this "SING" thing? I've tried to read this on other computers, but it's just too fast. That could be where InDesign on this computer is crashing, but I don't know what to look for, since I cannot read it at all.
    Thanks again.

  • InDesign CS3 index crash/quit

We have a file that was originally created using InDesign CS3 on OS X with an index but it's now crashing: if any of the index text is amended/deleted it crashes and quits. Even trying to delete the actual index pages does the same. The file won't open at all in CS4 and crashes/quits that as well.
    We've tried the following:
    - removed the index markers across the document and updated preview
    - manually removed from the index pane all references
    - deleted every other page other than the index and have isolated the issue to something in the index content.
There don't appear to be any font conflicts after checking.
Has anyone else come across this as we need to use this file as a template for another but are slightly paralysed with this index issue?

Sorry for the delay, took me a while to find a non-Intel Mac with CS3...
So, yeah, I see your problem. CS3 crashes while exporting the INX. Though it looks like it gets most of your document.
I'll play around with it some more...
    Citrus Design wrote:
That's the problem, we can't even get this far as CS3 crashes when trying to export to INX.
The original document was created on a G5 PowerPC Mac, Leopard and CS3 but we don't have access to this set-up any more so we're a bit stumped.

  • InDesign 2.x Unexpectedly Quits During Startup

I've seen postings for this and similar problems going back several years. Have tried the various fixes. None seem to work.
    I've got InDesign 2.02 installed on  a Mac PowerBook G4 running Mac OS X v10.4.11. It's a small screen, 1GHz model with 768 MBytes RAM.  I usually work hooked into a 1600 x 1200 pixel monitor.
Last year I had problems with InDesign quitting when I tried to save a file being worked on. It was a pain, but I remember somehow working around the problem. Maybe exported file. Don't recall what the work around was.
I just recently tried using InDesign again. Similar to some other postings, when InDesign is started up, it quits during the splash screen statement "Executing startup services ...".
Is anyone still having this problem or know of a solution?:-(

Hmm... Maybe it's the same issue that affected CS/CS2: they started crashing after installing Acrobat 8.2 or 8.2.1.
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/534/cpsid_53468.html
A while ago, the fix was to restore some stuff in the 'Application Support' folder (Acrobat was mucking something up in a shared area, and that caused InDesign CS/CS2 to crash on startup), but apparently, there is now an Acrobat 8.2.2 to fix the issue. If you have Acrobat 8.2 or 8.2.1, it could be the same issue.

  • After buying Adobe Premiere from the cloud, installation by (Adobe service), my InDesign CS6 quits on startup. Need help, Adobe doesn't want to fix this.

If you buy a cloud application while you have a totally legal Creative Suite Premium 6 it might stop working. Adobe made the installation by taking control of my computer. The girl did not seemed totally well trained... my opinion and right after that my InDesign stopped working!!! Now my If I call to get help they send you here because they don't want to spend money fixing that problem. So, I wonder if it's a good idea  to buy a new application from the cloud if you already are a good customer. It's probably safer to buy other CS6 or CS5 versions if you already have some. Otherwise you might be stuck to buy the entire package through the cloud even if you don't need the last versions. To solved my problem, I erased the applications with all the preferences on the second time around, reinstalled everything and InDesign still quits on startup. I have the same setup at home but this one does work.

Hi Jeff, here is a transcript of a chat I had with Pradeep. This should get you up to date with the situation. Meanwhile, i actually download the entire software from this address to reinstall the InDesign: licensing.adobe.com
Pradeep: As I understand you are having trouble with using Indesign CS6.
    Pradeep: Is that correct?
André Guernon: Yes, it was working fine like the rest of my CS6 premium but after premiere was installed it failed completely.
    Pradeep: Thank you for confirming.
Pradeep: May I know if you are getting any error message when you try to launch the software?
André Guernon: Yes, InDesign quit unexpectedly.
    Pradeep: Okay.
Pradeep: Before you get the error message, may I know if you are able to see the workspace, the menubar and the tool bars of indesign software?
André Guernon: I see nothing of the interface, the process takes about a quarter of a second.
Pradeep: I am sorry for the Inconvenience Andre.
André Guernon: Thats OK, just happy that you are here.
Pradeep: I wish I could help you with the issue but we (chat support) handle issues with  Download and Installation, Adobe CC products.
Pradeep: As the issue is regarding an old version, I request you to visit Adobe forums where our experts will be able to assist you.

  • Photoshop and InDesign CS3 keep quitting unexpectedly

I'm having issues with Photoshop and InDesign CS3 quitting unexpectedly. At first it was every once in a while, now it's happening numerous times a day and is becoming most irritating. I'm using a mac with OS X. I wasn't here when they installed CS3 and am the only one in the company with a mac so the computer services department won't be any help.

Run the normal maintenance tasks including Repair Permissions.
If it still crashes make sure that the TWAIN plug-in has been disabled and try trashing Photoshop's Prefs.
Otherwise, suspect bad Fonts. FontAgent Pro can ferret those out for you.
(Because it is also happening in InDesign, I suspect that bad or duplicated fonts are involved.)

  • InDesign CS3 Quits Unexpectedly

    Hi all,
Mac G4, OSX Tiger, InDesign CS3
Can anyone please shed some light on a problem I have just recently run into:
1 I am attempting to append some paragraph, character and object styles whilst no documents are open, in order to have them all load for every new document I open. These are from a document named 'style sheets' which I created to store my ongoing styles.
2 After appending the styles, I quit InDesign.
3 On re-launching, InDesign displays an error message: 'InDesign has unexpectedly quit', and will not open.
4 I trashed the preference files, except for those I wanted to keep: shortcuts, auto-correct and workspaces.
    5 InDesign then launched okay.
6 I repeated appending the styles and the same thing happened again.
Could this be that I may have some corrupted styles?
Will I have to go through all of them adding them one by one (there are quite a lot of them), re-launching InDesign every time in order to weed out the culprits?
Has any one come across this before?
Any advice would be most welcome.
    Thank you in advance,
    Rob

    Try here:http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/834/cpsid_83499.html
When you launch Adobe CS3 applications on Apple's Mac OS 10.6.3, the applications crash or quit unexpectedly. This is due to a conflict among Creative Suite 3, Mac OS 10.6.3, and a library Adobe uses for CS3. Other non-Adobe applications that use this library should have the same issue.
There are two conditions that trigger this behavior.
The first is when the system serial number doesn't have a valid number, but instead has a value such as "System Serial#," or "SystemSerialNumb." An incomplete serial number can also be a trigger. Complete and valid serial numbers should be exactly 12 alpha-numeric characters Invalid serial numbers can be set into a computer when the computer is refurbished or repaired, and the original system serial number is unavailable. For this case, see solutions 1 and 2.
The second cause is when applications are set to run in Rosetta mode. For this case, see solution 3.
SOLUTION 1: REVERT TO MAC OS 10.6.2 OR EARLIER
For assistance in this process, please contact Apple or your Apple reseller.
SOLUTION 2: OBTAIN A NEW SYSTEM SERIAL NUMBER
For assistance with this, please contact Apple or your Apple reseller.
SOLUTION 3: DISABLE THE OPEN USING ROSETTA OPTION
This is for some cases which are unrelated to the system serial number.
Select your CS3 application in the finder.
    Choose File > Get Info.
Disable the "Open using Rosetta" checkbox.
    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Adobe is working with Apple to understand the issue and determine a course of action to resolve it.
To confirm that you will not be affected by this the first case of this issue, prior to installing the OS 10.6.3 update, do the following:
From the Apple menu, choose About this Mac.
    Click the More Info button.
In the Hardware Overview pane, look at the value for  "Serial Number (system)".
If the value has exactly 12 alpha-numeric charactes, you should not be affected by this issue.
    Hope this helps

  • InDesign CS3 crashing on startup

    Hi
One of our plug-ins is causing InDesign CS3 5.0.3 (release version running on Windows XP) to crash on startup. This is only affecting one customer, on all their PCs, but we can't reproduce it in-house. It happened before, to the same customer and the same plug-in, a few months ago, and we 'fixed' it by reverting from the 5.0.3 SDK to the 5.0.1. However, now the problem has returned.
This isn't much to go on, but can anyone suggest what might be causing this?
    Thanks,
    Charles

Well, I finally fixed it. It comes down to an issue with Visual Studio: that programs built with it will not necessarily run on a target PC that doesn't have VS. You have to run a Microsoft file called vcredist.exe on the target PC, which provides it with the missing DLLs etc. We knew about that, but it turns out that when we decided to service pack VS2005, we should have downloaded a new version of Microsoft's redistributable program.
Why only this customer was affected remains a mystery. At a guess they have installed some other piece of software that included incompatible versions of some DLLs, and running Microsoft's installer fixed things as a side effect.
The crash I was getting on one of our own PCs a couple of days ago now looks like a completely different bug introduced by my diagnostic code. I'd investigate further except I'm already sick of this problem, and all I need to do is remove the diagnostics.
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

  • InDesign CS3 wants a file it already has

InDesign CS3 has begun quitting on startup, saying it's missing the file /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Type Support/Unicode/Mappings/Adobe/Mac/ROMAN.TXT — but it's not. The file is there, right where it's supposed to be. What gives? I've relaunched, restarted, reinstalled; nothing's working.

  • indesign cs3 won't launch in mac os 10.4.11

indesign cs3 does not complete its launch in mac os 10.4.11.
[i'm running a powermac dual 1.25 ghz power pc g4 mirror door].
the same happens with illustrator cs3.
    photoshop cs3 launches just fine.

    thanks.

the launch doesn't even reach the splash screen; it's aborted very early in the process.
i simply get the mac "the application unexpectedly quit" box with no error code.

  • How to restore broken links after server migration in Indesign CS3???

    Hi All,
I have used my google skills to no avail and everything I have read here has been a dead end for me. I can't be the only person in this situation, so hopefully someone can help!
My marketing department has reached the storage limits of our shared network drive. Located on this drive is our (HUGE) image library which acts as a single central respository serving up our indesign links (read here: we don't package files - to conserve space). We have decided that in an effort to create a true archive and have more space for our image library we need to migrate the library to a new 16 terabit Drobo (yay!).
The problem is that every INDD file that links to the current library will now suffer from broken links. We literally have hundreds of INDD files and thousands of links. The good news is...the file structure isn't changing at all! Just the server location is changing. Is there any way to to a batch update of the links that tells INDD to look for the exact same file path on a different drive?
    In short:
current image library (old server): marketing/image library/photos/products/multiple product folders
new image library (new server): drobo/image library/photos/products/multiple product folders
I want to point InDesign to the new server and have it pick up the file path without having to navigate to each and every file individually. Voila!
Is this even possible? Is there any 3rd party software to help? Other architechture solutions that might be suggested?
Thanks so much for the help!
    Alex

I wrote several scripts to solve this problem, here is one of them.

You can specify a platform-specific path name, or a path in a  platform-independent format known as universal resource identifier (URI)  notation, or Mac OS 9 path name (for Mac).
For example any of the following notations are valid:
    Windows
    c:\dir\file (Windows path name)
    /c/dir/file (URI path name)
//10.44.54.70/Test/images (uniform naming convention (UNC) path name of the form //servername/sharename)
    //Apple/Test/images
    \\10.44.54.70\Test\images (Windows path name)
    \\Apple\Test\images (Windows path name)
where 10.44.54.70 IP  address of the server, Apple -- DNS name of the server, Test -- share name
    Mac
The following examples assume that the startup volume is MacOSX, and that there is a mounted volume Remote.
/dir/file (Mac OS X path name)
    /MacOSX/dir/file (URI path name)
MacOSX:dir:file (Mac OS 9 path name)
    /Remote/dir/file (URI path name)
Remote:dir:file (Mac OS 9 path name)
Remote/dir/file (Mac OS X path name)
You can just copy a part of the path in Links panel and paste it to the script's dialog. In CS4, make sure to choose "Copy Platform Style Path" in context menu.
The case of the characters doesn’t matter: you can type both in upper and lowercase in the script's dialog. For example  — Test, test, TEST, TeSt — are all the same for the script.

  • Can't open more than one file at once (Indesign CS3)

    hi there
I have to deal with a strange problem, every time (well actually randomly) I try to open more than one indesign file at once, indesign just stays in the background and I can't get it to show up.
the only thing I can to is force quite the application and restart indesign. Sometimes I'm able to see one of the open documents but I can't do anything with it (as there are no tools and no other indesign windows).
Im not the only one having this problem, my work mate just updated his osx from 10.4 to 10.5, and now he is having the same problems...
    any suggestions why that is?
    cheers
(my system: mac 2x2.66ghz dual-core intel xeon, 1gb ram, osx 10.5.2, indesign cs3
my work mates system: mac G5, 1gb ram, indesign cs3, osx 10.5.2)

Every system has issues when its first released.
What's the point of jumping to a new system on a production machine when everything works perfectly in the old system?
Monitor these forums and other boards and as soon as Apple and Adobe have a fix jump to the new system.

  • InDesign CS3 crashes when I try to insert a new page

I'm working on a document that is currently 70+ pages in InDesign CS3, and whenever I try to add a new page (regardless of where I try to add the new page at within the document), InDesign crashes. I haven't experienced this issue with any other documents. After not having worked on this document for several days, I was able to insert 2 new pages today before the issue started again. I've done several searches on the Adobe forums, and I haven't come across anyone who seems to experience this same problem. But if anyone has, or has a suggestion for me to try, I would really appreciate it, as this document needs to grow to 100 pages, meaning I really need the ability to insert pages!!

Thanks, Peter. The problem still persisted through a new indd file created from an exported inx file though. I was able to work around the issue by setting my document to 100 pages in Document Settings. That added enough extra pages at the end of the document which I can then move to other locations within the document.
