InDesign CS3 bug for "Edit Original"

Hi,
I have laid out an InDesign document with lots of photos (JPG), with each frame showing the photo at a certain 'crop level' (or % scale relative to the original photo). Let's say I have a frame in which the photo is scaled at 20%. If I try to edit this ('Edit Original') in Photoshop to enhance it, after making changes and saving & closing it, I return back to InDesign. I find this photo to be entirely different scale (the one chosen by InDesign is totally random, and certainly not the original one (so in the example above it will be not 20%, it could be 38%, 48% or whatever, but not the one I had before I started editing the photo).
This is very annoying as I have to remember how the photo was set up in the frame, and fix it after finishing the editing step.
Does any one know if this is a known bug and what is the work around to this problem?
The whole reason for me to use InDesign was to be able to layout my pages perfectly and then edit only those photos that were selected. This bug is making my life miserable :-(
Thx for any help/Regards,
Sandeep

Hi,
I think the "mystery" is solved. The problem occurs ONLY on the portrait photos, and because of the peculiarity of various SW programs (even though they are all from Adobe). I can now recreate the scenario at will, even for a smaller test document with 1 image.
This is what I have discovered so far. InDesign does have the dimensions from the original photo (that's why it will keep the correct settings regardless of how many times you make changes to the ID document or move/resize the rectangle 'linking' to the picture). The problem comes from the fact that photoshop changes some of the EXIF tags "logically".
EXIF tags (I am showing only the relevant ones) for the original photo are the same as the one 'exported' from Photoshop Elements 6.0. They are as follows:
Orientation : Rotate 90 CW
XResolution : 72
YResolution : 72
ResolutionUnit : inches
ExifImageWidth : 3888
ExifImageHeight : 2592
Software : Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0
Note that my actual photo is in the 'portrait' mode, so width should be 2592 (smaller) and height should be 3888 (larger) - but the orientation of "Rotate 90 CW" is read and honored by InDesign, so I did not need to 'manually' rotate it when placing the file. Now I set the scale to 10% because my rectangle was small. When exporting the photo from my album, the Software tag was attached by PE6.0 as you can see above. In my original camera based file, this tag was missing, but otherwise everything is was same.
AFTER I edited the photo in Photoshop to change its shadows/highlights, levels, etc. when I saved the photo, EXIF tags became:
Orientation : Horizontal (normal)
XResolution : 72
YResolution : 72
ResolutionUnit : inches
ExifImageWidth : 2592
ExifImageHeight : 3888
Software : Adobe Photoshop CS3 Windows
So, you can see that Photoshop changed the orientation to "normal" and also adjusted the Width and Height to support that orientation (I did not notice that quickly enough:-().
What is strange is that, instead of maintaining my scale at 10%, after 'updating the modified link', InDesign changes the scale to 15% (if you do the math, the original horizontal dimension of 3888 is exactly 1.5 times the new dimension of 2592!) so it must keep the link information in some other way that it recomputes to be 15%. BTW, the X & Y values of the placed image were also multiplied by 1.5. That's how I was seeing the changed scales, as well as X, Y values after updates. The net orientation of the photo is not affected (at least for the photos from this camera), but it could as well.
I am much happier that at least I understand the problem! This of course supports all of you who were recommending to 'prep' the files before you start. I'd also add that don't just prep them with any batch tool, but do it with the tool that you are going to use to edit. BECAUSE...
This problem can occur any time I mix and match my editing software. I am going to check the behavior of LightRoom (since I have just got it, I am not as comfortable to work with it as Photoshop - and of course the styles of these 2 products are very different). I have never used the Camera Raw 4.5 (or 5 that comes with PS CS4), but will have to be careful about that too.

  • Where can you find free InDesign CS3 templates for newsletters, or free editable examples of good newsletters in the InDesign format?

    I am looking for free newsletter templates or free editable examples of good newsletters made using InDesign CS3.  Anyone know of a great spot for finding these?

    That would make sense if it opened a template folder but it opens the most recent Bridge folder I had open.
    Edit: Just tried it again and the template folder came right up. Thanks.

  • How to convert InDesign CS2 files for editing in CS5 (win)

    We are a small publishing company with several top-selling language products. I need to revision a title which was published 10 years ago. The files are CS2 and I cannot open them in CS5. Seem Adobe doesn't offer any conversion utility. It seem I need to open them in CS3 then save and use CS4 to convert from CS3 to CS4, then I can use CS5. But I cannot find CS3 for sale anywhere. So I'm screwed. Please offer a file conversion service. It's just code! you can run the old versions on virtualized servers and charge $500 per file. I'll pay! I'm totally screwed. We have to recreate the entire book from scratch. I used to be an Adobe promoter, but now I'm a detractor. this is horrible.
    Does anyone have old versions around could be used to get this job done?
    Cheers!

    OK this is seriously messed up. I just spent the day installing trial versions of InDesign CS3 and CS4 (on a Windows Virtual PC running Windows XP) and converted my files from CS2 to CS3, then C3 to CS4. But when I try to open in CS5, they still crash InDesign CS5! Something is corrupt or incompatible with InDesign CS5 even though they opened in CS3 and CS4. wtf.
    Guess I'll just have to edit in CS4 and give up on bring these files any closer to the modern world? Any other ideas?

  • Indesign [cs3] download for win7

    Hello,
    I can't seem to find the indesign or collective cs3 pack that works on windows 7, I 've come accross only those for xp and vista. Where can I find one for download?
    Thanx

    You won't. CS3 predates Win7.
    There are not separate installers for the various versions of the OS paltform, only Windows or Mac, so if you can find CS3 for Windows, it should install on Win7. Make sure you let it install in the default 32 bit program files folder.

  • Trying to open file in photoshop elements, only first option available in Edit Photo window.  The other two has "Edit a Copy is not applicable to raw or Digital Negative files" same for Edit Original.

    sorry, no can do...ain't gonna happen.
    What you've done is hit the wall on is the basic difference between lite duty spot healing and photo level tone and color correction (Lightroom and Camera Raw) and heavy duty pixel retouching in Photoshop.
    When you need to substantially manipulate the "pixels" you need Photoshop and you'll be forced to render the raw file into a TIFF or PSD file either through Camera Raw or more better, via Lightroom.
    You can do the basic tone and color correction directly in Lightroom and edit in Photoshop from Lightroom. But you will NEED to create and save out a "rendered" image that is no longer raw...then retouch to your heart's desire, save it and it'll be available in Lightroom along side your original raw if you choose.
    But no, there's no way to open a raw in Photoshop, manipulate the heck out of it with massive retouching then save that back out as a raw file...ain't gonna happen.

  • Setting temp directory for editing original files

    Experts,
    Is there a way to default the temporary working directory where a document is stored while editing it in a DIR?  This is what we are experiencing:  When a user creates a DIR and uploads a Word file into the DIR, the Original field on the document details perserves the path where the file was uploaded from, i.e. s:/share_drive.  When another user goes into the same DIR and tries to edit the file, the program tries to create a working copy of the file in u:/share_drive.  If the second user does not have access to this path, they get an error.
    Is there a way to set the Original field an all files uploaded and stored in DMS to be a common working directory like c:\temp?

    Hi Andrew
    Th eoriginal is checked into sap/content server
    Te original gets saved in a temp location in the users desktop when the user opens the original from DIR.
    Check whether te folowing setting is maintained against pc or not.

  • Edit original for linked file

    Why does Illustrator take me to Preview instead of Photoshop when I go to Edit Original for a linked Photoshop file?

    This is actually controlled by the Mac OS, and easily corrected by doing a CMD I on any file, and changing the application for Open With.
    In this example I have set all my .psd files to open in Photoshop CS4.
    A useful keyboard shortcut for edit original: hollow arrow tool double click on a linked image on your canvas.

  • Tracking Edit Original in CS4

    Hi All,
    How can we know if an image has been edited with 'Edit Original' option in CS4.
    In previous Indesign versions (before CS4), the UIDRef of the link used to change if the image is saved after editing. In CS4 it doesn't change.
    In previous version I was trapping the ActionID for Edit Original and checking the UIDRefs to see if the image is saved after editing.
    Is there any method for this in CS4. Or some link attribute that can be checked to know if the image is saved or not after editing.
    Regards,
    Jasmine

    I am developing a plugin for adobe InDesign CS4.
    From my plugin, when I select a link and right click on it, I am getting "Edit Original" and "Edit with" options.
    But the "Edit with" option doesn't list the applications.
    I am able to edit the link using "Edit Original".
    The code I mentioned is not able to get the list of applications in the appList array.
    currently I am doing the below in LinkResource Handler::CanEditResource().
    AppInfoList appList;
    UIDRef LinkSelectedInLayout = Utils<ILinksUIUtils>()->GetSingleLinkUIDRefSelectedInLayout();
    if(LinkSelectedInLayout.GetUID() != kInvalidUID)
    InterfacePtr<ILink> SelectedLink(LinkSelectedInLayout,UseDefaultIID());
    if(SelectedLink)
    //UIDRef linkResourceRef(::GetDataBase(SelectedLink),SelectedLink->GetResource ());
    Utils<ILinksUIUtils>()->GetEditOriginalEditorList(appList,SelectedLink );
    //Utils<ILinkUtils>()->GetEditorList(linkResourceRef,appList,kFalse);
    Any Guide will be a great help
    Thanks

  • Can we force InDesign to look for links in current directory.

    An InDesign document has links to images/InCopy stories located at some location,say, "Dir_1". The copy of all the linked items are present in current directory of InDesign document.
    When we open this document in InDesign CS3 , the document is linked with the items under "Dir_1".
    If the linked items under "Dir_1" are deleted(while opening the document) InDesign CS3 looks for the linked items in current directory and links them to the document,automatically.
    Is there any option/API provided by InDesign CS3 UI/InDesign SDK to force InDesign to look for linked items in the current directory, irrespective of whether the original links are present or missing.

    Ha! I've been playing with this all morning long. In the long term, I think we might need a plugin developer, to be honest. In the short term: you could affix a set of Latin-script characters to each word to force the sort order:
    ΩUʿUnuq
    ΩHḪirbet
    ΩLLondon
    So: generate an index, grab your place names, peel off the omega, resort the index, then GREP for two caps in succession and peel off the first. I dunno if this would work, I'm not 100% clear on how you are working.
    Or, alternately, another way to force a secondary sort order: Go to "Sort Options" in the Index flyout, add a sort order you know you won't be using (Greek?), then learn correct alphabetical sort order in Greek, then prefix all of your placenames with Greek letters, in the way you wanted the final sort to run. What I've been doing is styling my Hebrew glyphs (for indices in Farsi and Kurdish) with a separate character style so they're easier to find and remove.

  • InDesign CS3 Index problem

    I am trying to combine the indexes of several 30-40 pg. stories in an inDesign CS3 book for print; however, once I minimize the story and try to paste its index into a separate blank document, the cursor is no longer "loaded." It seems that the only way I can create an index is at the end of each individual story, then paste them all into a document and manually alphabetize them. Is there a method by which I can create the index for the entire book at one time?

    The help file says you can index the whole book:
    Long document features / Creating an index
    Generate an index
    Once youve added index entries and previewed them in the Index panel,
    youre ready to generate an index story to place in your document for
    publication.
    An index story can appear as a separate document or in an existing
    document. When you generate an index story, InDesign compiles index
    entries and updates page numbers across your document or book. If you
    add or delete index entries or update numbering in your document,
    however, youll need to regenerate the index to update it.
    If an index marker appears in overset text when you generate the index,
    you are asked if you would like to include these markers in the index.
    If you click Yes, the entry appears in the index without a page number.
    etc

  • What's the benefits of Indesign CC over Indesign CS3 for print design?

    What's the benefits of Indesign CC over Indesign CS3 for print design? I'd like to know the advantages and features – all those I read about are to do with EPUB, collaborative working, teams or digital designs, and those don't reflect my work.

    Very important is the span column paragraph property which allows to span several columns in a text frame or to split a column in several sub columns.
    Very important is the tag feature, which is also important for creating PDFs with unlimited access.
    A lot of problems with footnotes and page layout have been solved due to a better text engine. Up to CS5.5 it could happen that a footnote could force a page be empty when a document was opened.
    With CS5 rounded frame corners which are editable were introduced.
    Object Styles have been completed since CS3.
    Content tools to create linked content were introduced. You need only to change the original content (text or image) and all linked content will be updated as any other link. The linked content can be in the same and in any other document.
    Since CS5.5 it is much easier to anchor frames in a text flow with the little at the top of a frame symbol.

  • Anomalies in CS5 when using edit original on Illustrator files from within InDesign

    Using the Edit Original function to open up a placed Illustrator file from an InDesign layout, we are seeing some strange things. If the image is placed on page at 100%, after editing via Edit Original it comes back in at a different size. Sometimes it is a silly size (99.999999999% or 100.000000002%), other times 2 or 3% smaller. Is anyone else seeing this - and, if so, is there a fix?

    We are also experiencing this with .psd .ai .eps .jpg files etc. etc. etc.
    Example:
    An image is placed in a box in InDesign, then resized and positioned. In a later stage the image needs editing, so the image is selected and we click on Edit Original. The image opens in either PS or ILL, we alter it (not sizewise, just color). Then we save it and the link in InDesign updates.
    BUT
    The position and the scale of the image most often CHANGES.
    CS5 is soo full of bugs, it is not even funny anymore. We are slowly moving our studio back to CS3.

  • Creating an index in InDesign CS3 - is there any way to limit where and for what it looks?

    I'm creating an index for a 300-page book using InDesign CS3 on both a PC with Windows XP home and a MacPro with OS X Leopard (I take this book back and forth between these two computers). I have created this as a book (.indb) file so I can use the Index panel with the book option checked to include all of the book chapters.
    There are two things I was wondering how to do, if they can be done at all.
    1 - I want the index to look for entries in the main pages only, not in the master pages.
    2 - I'd like to be able to do only attributed text. For example, I'd like the index to find only the word people when it is bold and italic, and not all of the other places it may occur. Can I do this with a style also, paragraph and/or character?
    Thanks so much,
    Marcy

    Read http://help.adobe.com/en_US/InDesign/6.0/WS8721440D-5F68-4fd6-8115-CA3BEDACF001a.html (the online Help on indexes) -- it will probably answer a few questions.
    One I do know immediately is your question on "picking up" stuff from master pages and only with formatting. InDesign does not make an index for you -- you have to (oh! manual labor!) mark the words that should appear in the index yourself. So just don't mark them on master pages, or when not bold and/or italic. You might be wondering about that little button "Mark all instances", well, it does what it say, and in your case you do not want to mark all instances.
    The Capitalization issue is, AFAICR, somewhere in the Help; and so is your singular/plural stuff. The latter one is easy solved: if you mark a word to be indexed, ID asks you in a friendly dialog how it should be included, and that defaults to the current selected phrase, but you are free to edit the text in that dialog. ID does not mark the word or phrase; it inserts an invisible marker inside the to-be-indexed word that contains all information you enter in the Add Index Entry dialog, and it uses that to determine what page number to add. (That invisible marker is visible with "Show Invisible Characters", and can be cut, pasted and deleted at will -- so to remove a water melon, find the marker, and delete it.)
