Indesign CS3 crashes on "save" or "save as"

I have reinstalled. I have reset preferences. I have shut down, restarted, everything. Illustrator and Photoshop are doing the same thing. I am on a Mac, 10.6.4. Installed Adobe's latest updates last night and started having this problem this morning.

I had this same problem happen to me with Illustrator CS3 on a PC. Reinstalled my OS and the problem was resolved.

  • Photoshop & InDesign CS3 Crashing when Saving to Network

    Hi,
Photoshop & InDesign CS3 crashes whenever I try to save a file over the network to a shared computer we are using as a server.
    SPECIFICS
    I'm running Leopard 10.5.2
    - I have tried reinstalling the entire Creative Suite
    - I did not reinstall Version Cue
    - Tried deleting the com.adobe.mediabrowser.p.ist and Photoshop.plist preferences.
    ALSO:
    - If I create a new file on my computer and then immediately save it, it usually does not crash on the first save. But after I do a few things to the file and then try to save again, it hangs up.
-I am unable to force quit Photoshop; I have to do a hard reboot.
Adobe tech support believes it is a network problem. If so, what needs to be done to fix the network?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I've heard rumors of the "don't work from the server" thing from our IT department a few times but now I'm seeing it for myself. They are now using this thread as the reason our machines are experiencing so many crashes and errors again. Basically chalking it up to us working off the network is the culprit since they can't find anything else wrong. and since it's not supported by Adobe then were doing it wrong. But none of the workflow solutions we've looked seem faster than just saving to a network. So I'm a bit at a loss...
How are people dealing with the time it takes to copy files from the server to local and back again. How are people integrating this into workflow's where multiple people need to see and work in the same document multiple times a day?
A large part of our workload is sometimes thousand page catalogs, mostly our files are 15-25 meg InDesign files and might get up around 50 megs or so and be linked to as much as 5 gigs of image data in the extreme. I can't imagine how much time that would take to copy and work and then copy back, then if someone else were to copy and work and copy back, etc... It's almost like we'd have to copy each section to one computer and make everyone play musical chairs to come and work on the file when they needed too so we only had to copy it from the server once!
I've done a few catalog covers where the working files sometimes got up over 4 gigs, (and yes with something like this I was working local), but there were days where saving my work back to the server was like 45 minutes, a few times I had issues with the save and I'd be there screwing around for an hour and a half to make sure my work was backed up on the server. I can't imagine having to go through that every time I needed to work on a large Indesgn file that had 4-5 gigs of linked images.
Does everybody really work this way...? Or is there a magic network setup that allows a sane server side workflow? I know my IT people are compotent profesionals, but perhaps they just haven't heard the latest and greatest for Network CS Suite set up???
Personally, every time we get new boxes on our desks everything runs great for 6-8? months and then slowly but surely things get buggy and the next thing you know there's smoke coming out of your Dell. They say they fixed it and replaced the damage but the errors continue...
Anyway, I'm really shocked that working over the server is a no no. Unless you had a very small work group I think this must be a nightmare!!!

  • Presets and defaults get deleted when InDesign CS3 crashes

Every few days InDesign CS3 crashes. I don't know why, but that's not even the issue here. The problem is that when it does, all of my presets and default settings get erased.
Is there anything I can do to keep this from happening?
If I save my default settings (by which I mean measurements, color palette, default fonts, stuff like that) as a workspace, will that allow me to import it all again when it does happen? Or will my workspaces get deleted too?
This is getting really really really frustrating and I'd appreciate any advice on the matter!
    Shari+

Read through the prior threads Peter posted. I see no solution offered. I
too have had this problem on two separate workstations from the day ID CS3
was installed. Intermitant, but it can be made to happen quite easily. I
have never had a problem with printing, just opening multiple files through
    explorer.
I spend hours on the phone with Adobe tech support and they also could not
resolve the issue. Tried everything under the sun, including activating only
the bare minimum fonts required by the systems, creating new XP user
accounts, reinstalling the suite, deleting prefs, washing some files through
INX, defrag, turning off all processes other than ID... nada... still
problems. They gave up. So did I. Just living with it waiting for the next
    update.
If someone has a fix for this, I'm all ears.

  • InDesign CS3 crashes without error when opening any 2nd InDesign file

Issue: InDesign CS3 crashes without error and remains resident in memory if we have an InDesign file open and attempt to open a second InDesign file.
    OS: Win XP SP2
    InDesign Version: 5.0.2
Hardware: Dell Precision WorkStation T3400, 4 gigabytes of memory, Intel Core2 Quad processor Q6600
Details: No messages in the event viewer about the problem. We renamed the InDesign Defaults and the InDesign Saved Data file. We removed Creative Suite, restarted and then reinstalled Creative Suite (I could not remove and reinstall InDesign individually). We have created a new Windows profile for this user. I have one computer having the trouble. Other InDesign installations are working fine. This computer has 559 files in C:\windows\fonts. Other people that are not having the problem have a larger number of fonts installed.
The issue is not file specific. We are not running out of memory as I checked the task manager after the first InDesign document is open.
Why is opening a second document different than opening the first document?

    Hello Peter and Josh,
I'd just like to assert that I am having the exact same problem as Josh. I've spent the time to go through the steps listed above and have found the same results.
The issue as we see it multiple times daily is as follows:
    (1) User opens File1 (everything works fine)
    (2) User goes to open File2 (via explorer or via file->open) or print File1
    (3) The User Interface for ID disappears (InDesign.exe still appears in Task Manager and is NOT listed as "Not Responding", ID does not appear in the Task Bar)
    (4) The only way to continue work is to End Task/End Process InDesign.exe and relaunch.
No error messages appear, no error logs are created(that I can find). Non-related concerns caused us to upgrade this users PC. With a completely new install we are still having the problems. The systems are listed as follows:
OS: Win XP SP2 (fully updated minus SP3)
    InDesign Version: 5.0.2
Newest Hardware: Custom Built Computer, 4GB RAM installed (3.24 recognized by windows), Intel Core2 Quad processor Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz
OS: Win XP SP2 (fully updated minus SP3)
    InDesign Version: 5.0.2
Older Hardware: Custom Built Computer, Intel D945GTP Motherboard, 2GB RAM installed, Intel Pentium D processor @ 2.8Ghz
    Troubleshooting:
    (1) Alt+Space and M then using arrow keys moves every other window the user had opened other than In-Design. The user has two monitors. (a) 1280x1024 and (b) 1200x1600 (yes she uses the monitor rotated 90 degrees
    (2) Log files - Non exist in the C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS3 folder. I've also done a search across the entire hard drive for any "*.log" files, none of which were adobe related.
    (3) Default Printer - Changing the default printer to Adobe PDF is not really an option. I was able to convince the user to temporarily switch to a different networked printer and await the results (most likely today or tomorrow it should recreate)
    (4) /3GB switch - Getting that last 700 something MB of memory isn't an issue. I've run MemTest.exe on all the available system memory overnight in a "burn in" test. The system ran fine the sticks were nice and warm when I got in from all the hard work :)
    (5) Order of Opening - The problem repeates regardless of order. The trick seems to be opening File2 or printing File1 (I had the user only work on one file at a time (required her to close any open files before opening the next, that wasn't fun for my user but the system didn't crash on opening in this scenario, just on printing. Obviously not a permanent work around)
Any help here would be much appreciated as this has been plaguing us for months now.

  • InDesign CS3 crashing in Mac 10.6.8

As suggested by John Hawkinson in the InDesign CS3 crashes when printing in OSX Lion thread I've started a new discussion for this.
I'm running Snow Leopard - 10.6.8. I would like to upgrade to Lion but until I can confirm CS3 is all working I'd rather not. I bought CS3 initally when I was in a much better financial situation and currently I just can't afford the upgrade to CS5. So I need to make this work the best I can for the time being but since the last OS update I'm getting lots of problems.
The first problem is placing an image. I go to file, click place and as I'm navigating to an image and the application just closes. I get a "Problem Report for InDesign" dialog and the message "Indesign quit unexpectedly"
    http://pastebin.com/sGnLp21B
The second problem is exporting to pdf. I click export, choose PDF and regardless of whatever settings I choose when I click export I get this crash report:
    http://pastebin.com/vwBDfBaF
The file I'm working on was created prior to upgrading to 10.6.8 and allowed me to place images and export just fine. I wondered it if was a corrupted file but I have since started new ones with exactly the same results.
When I initally googled this problem I found someone with a similar kind of error and they suggested creating a new account worked for them and they were able to run CS3 as before. I tried that and it did indeed work. So I can run a copy of CS3 (not updated, installed as it was straight out of the box) fine on a second account but this one seems to crash on even the most minor of jobs.
I initally had some problems installing CS3 on my macbook pro (prior to this machine I'd had a mac pro running tiger without issue). I found the Adobe Updater would cause Illustrator to crash when opening after the updates had all been applied. I fixed this problem by doing a fresh install and updating each application manually by downloading the updates from the support site. Until now I had not had anymore issues.
If more information is needed please just let me know, I've not posted here before so it's quite possible I missed something.

    Hi.
The first thing to notice is that you're not running the current version of CS3:
    Version:         5.0.0.458 (5000)
The latest update to CS3 is 5.0.4, which I believe has fixes for a bunch of similar problems: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4029
. You should definitely install the update before we look too-too closely at the crashes.
Are you using Version Cue? The first crash report appears to be related to it.
The second one...I forgot how CS3 sometimes doesn't include symbol information in the crash report. It's a bit of a pain to figure it out, so I'll defer until we see if the update doesn't solve your problem. Though the Apple version of the crash report may have more information, if you get that or have access to it (it should be visible in Console.app in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter.
I'm not quite sure I follow -- it sounds like you're aware there are updates, but you mention updating as it if is per-account. But it's not. When you update InDesign (or anything Adobe) on one account, the updates get applied across-the-board to the whole system.
What is different between user accounts is InDesign preferences, so if they have gotten corrupt, you can have problems. (There are other differences, too, of course...).
You should update InDesign to 5.0.4 and then trash your InDesign preferences (see the link in the Troubleshooting 101 box on the main forum page), and see if that helps.

  • InDesign CS3 crashing on launch

    INDD cs3 5.4
    Mac (Intel)  OS 10.5.8
    Hi there,
Having major issues with indesign CS3 crashing upon launch.
It gets as far as saying "starting up service registry". before bumming out.
Previously it had been running without any major issues for at least a year or so. Not recently updated anything on my machine so curious as to why this is now happening!
    So far I've tried...
    1) deleting indesign prefs and cache
    2) reparing indesign
    3) removing suitcase fusion and fusion's core
    4) repaired disk permissions
    5) started up in safe mode AND created new user account on mac too
    6) used font doctor to repair / examine font library.
    7) turned off ALL fonts including system fonts.
So far nothing has worked!  Does anybody have the answer?!?
    Thanks in advance.

Make sure you have the last patch, 5.0.4 build 682 (hold down the CMD key while choosing About InDesign from the help menu). You said you do, but verify it. Make sure, too, that the fonts mentioned inthe KB article are active.
If all else fails, think about uninstalling, running the clean script, and reinstalling.

  • Indesign CS3 Crashes Randomly on Windows x64, Dual Monitor Setup

My coworker and I just had our computers upgraded Windows XP 64-bt on the following computer setup:
    Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz CPU
    8GB DDR3 RAM
    Gigabyte GA-EX58 Intel X58 Motherboard
    1TB Seagate ES.2 7200rpm 32MB Cache SATAII Hard  Drive
We're running CS3. Indesign keeps crashing on her machine, randomly from what we can tell. It runs fine on my machine.
We are running Indesign in compatibility mode for Windows XP on both machings (the crashing was much worse before we turned it on).
The only difference between my computer and the workstation where Indesign CS3 crashes is she has a dual monitor setup.
Any thoughts on what might be causing it?

Thanks for the heads up.We're actually kinda banking on Windows 7 to be a bit more stable and switch to that, but it's a long few months when your program crashes every few minutes.
I just realized that we don't have the latest update (5.0.4) on her machine, we've downloaded it and are hoping that will help to at least reduce the crashing...

  • InDesign CS3 Crashes on Save (PC)

The other day i tried to save a file in Photoshop CS3 and suddenly on clicking save the program froze. Thru the forums i learned i could resolve this issue by turning off CUE, this fixed the problem but the next day i experienced the same problem with InDesign CS3. Soon as i try to save it freezes. Yes i can hit escape and unlock it but it still happens everytime i try to save a file. I've tried everything, googled everywhere and find no solution. Is there anyone out there that can help me with this problem?
Specs: PC, DualCore 2.5, 4gigs Ram, 1.5 TB drive space.
    Thanks!

Bob, i want to thank you so much. My InDesign at this time is so important to me as Monday I have a deadline. You fixed this problem for me. I hope this topic helps others as much as it helped me.

  • Indesign CS3 will not prompt to save

I recently updated my indesign cs3 with the adobe updater but when I opened the program it said that my workgroup client.indesign pl
ugin was conflicting with my workgroup client UI.indesign plugin, so i went online and downloaded the indesign cs3 update and indesi
gn was working fine except that the program will not SAVE AS. If i click on it, there is no prompt and if i make a change to my file
and close the file, the program will not prompt me to save the file before I close the program.

Both of those are in the required plugins folder on my system, and have the same date and version number (5.0.4.682), so you might want to check to be sure yours match.

  • InDesign cs3 crashes when opening CS2 documents

ID cs3 crashes when opening CS2 documents, not when open dialog appears, but after I choose file and it "starts" opening it. (core duo, xp, clean install, all updates)
If i open ID by opening file, it crashes with standard windows dialog, if I open ID first, it does not crash, but rather behaves strangely, nothing is opening, if I move a mouse it turns to sand clock.
Same thing happens on all machines with ID cs3 in my office.
All other apps works fine. I did read every single forum about ID crashing and nothing helps. Files resaved in interchange format opens well. There must be something in the files that ID cs2 did and what id cs3 cannot open :( Any ideas?

    1. Is there any reason to use eps? Avoid it use AI, PSD or PDF instead.
    2. Are all used fonts ok? What kind of fonts du you use?
    3. Which Mac OS X do you use?
Does it crash with alwayst the same files?
What does the file history tell you? Hold down the command key and got to InDesign > About InDesign… Does it tell you somewhat more specific, like missing plugins, severly damaged files and restored files, when (in which version) the files have been created first (helps often to export to IDML and open this again and save it as INDD and work with the new file.), has the problematic file been converted from another application (Quark Xpress or PageMaker), etc.

  • Indesign CS3 crash while generating an PDF or deleting an index entry

Indesign crashes when I will starting the PDF export. This happens in all Indesign documents which are converted from CS2 and with index entries. So I want to delete the index but Indesign crashes while deleting too. I tried to convert the files in .indx files but nothing changes. Indesign is still crashing.
    Indesign 5.0.2
    Mac OS X 10.5.3
    MacPro Identifier 3,1
    RAM: 4GB

Hi. Im having the same problems and tried everything. Indesign crashes not just on Exporting, but also Import and Save As. It mostly works with no problem for days and then all the sudden crashes and cant fix it, then in about an hour starts working again, with the exact same document. It seems to me like the software cant find the path it created with the document. For example, if I press just SAVE, its saves with no problem, but when I choose SAVE AS, Indesign crashes after opening the communication window.
I still have PowerBook, not MacBook Pro, and OS X 10.5.3, so I figured my computer cant handle the new system and CS3. Although Im not having any problems with Photoshop nor other CS3 software, just indesign.
I would really appreciate some advice or response.

  • Indesign CS3 Crashes when loading text styles

hi all, i need some help.
Indesign cs3 keeps crashing when I try to "load all text styles" from one indesign file to another. the file has ten styles (character & paragraph). I'm currently working on windows 7.
thankyou for any information you can provide.

    Are you patched to 5.0.4?
Export both files to inx, re-open, Save As. (I checked, ID will not load styles from an inx)
Load just one style at a time to isolate a conflict.
Last resort, Highlight text from the source doc, paste into the new doc. I should carry in the style. It only needs to be a single charatcher.

  • InDesign CS3 Crashes When Placing Illustrator CS3 Art

    Hi all-
I've been having some problems over the past week with InDesign CS3. Specifically each and every time I try to place an Illustrator CS3 element, the dialog says it is importing the art. Then the trouble starts - InDesign grinds for about 10 seconds and then I get an error message stating that "InDesign.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close."
When I click on details, I see that the error signature is "AppName: InDesign.exe AppVer: 5.0.3.662 ModName: adobepdfl.dll ModVer 8.1.0.1146 Offset: 001a1fcd"
I've already done the obvious - trashed my prefs files, then deleted the CS3 Suite (Master Collection if that matters) and reinstalled - still have the exact same issue. I even zapped the dll after the reinstall, and then reinstalled again - no luck.
This ONLY happens with native Illustrator art - .pdf, .eps, .PSD, .jpgs, etc can be placed with no issues. Yeah, I can save everything as an .eps, but that will take a lot of time to convert every asset.
I'm on Windows XP, Service Pack 3, running on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61 with 2 Gigs of physical memory. Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T7300 @ 2.00 GHz.
Any ideas? Thanks for any help, here!

  • InDesign CS3 crashes when I try to insert a new page

I'm working on a document that is currently 70+ pages in InDesign CS3, and whenever I try to add a new page (regardless of where I try to add the new page at within the document), InDesign crashes. I haven't experienced this issue with any other documents. After not having worked on this document for several days, I was able to insert 2 new pages today before the issue started again. I've done several searches on the Adobe forums, and I haven't come across anyone who seems to experience this same problem. But if anyone has, or has a suggestion for me to try, I would really appreciate it, as this document needs to grow to 100 pages, meaning I really need the ability to insert pages!!
Computer: Mac OS X, 10.5.8, Dual 2.3 GHz PowerPC G5
    Software: InDesign CS3
Error Message: InDesign has unexpectedly quit. A crash report has been generated....

Thanks, Peter. The problem still persisted through a new indd file created from an exported inx file though. I was able to work around the issue by setting my document to 100 pages in Document Settings. That added enough extra pages at the end of the document which I can then move to other locations within the document.

  • InDesign CS3 crashes on start up, using Tiger

i recently installed InDesign CS3 on my machine, and it unexpectedly quits whenever i try to start it. it starts up fine in safe mode. I did the following already, getting this information from the InDesign support page:
When you start Adobe InDesign CS3 or Adobe InCopy CS3 on Mac OS, the application crashes, freezes, or quits with one of the following error messages:
"The application Adobe InDesign has unexpectedly quit."
"The application Adobe InCopy has unexpectedly quit."
    Solution
Do one or more of the following solutions:
Solution 1: Delete all Adobefnt10.lst files.
Solution 2: Troubleshoot fonts by disabling a few at a time.
Solution 4: Disable the Font Agent plug-in.
Solution 5: Start the application in Safe mode and disable Font Preview.
is there anything else i should try before calling it quits? thanks.

    Delete InDesign preferences.
Check if you have any damaged fonts.
    Repair permissions.
Make sure you are fully updated to the latest version of InDesign CS3, which 5.0.2.
Make sure your Tiger is updated to 10.4.11.
Make sure you have read & write permissions to your own user/your username/preferences folder.
Make sure you have read & write permissions to the Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe folder.
