InDesign CS3: "Expected entity name for reference"

I am importing and XML file from a database off a client's Web site. When I import it into InDesign I get the following error message:
Expected entity name for reference
Line: 40, Column: 45
Nothing gets imported. What is this and is there a way to trouble shoot/fix it?

I think the problem is with '&' or might be with something else, if i choose other options form dropdowns its does not give me any error. only fot this customer "H&M SWEDEN"
can any one please tell me what workaround i can do.. the obi version is 10.1.3.2

I've enabled OBIEE 10.1.3.3.2 on Suse Linux 9.x writeback successfully for an OBIEE report, however if any of the fields contain XML special characters like ampersand, less than, greater than symbols etc when I save I get error:

For example at the time of invoice i will give reference as inv no:1 and at the time of payment i will make payment against that reference number. Now i required that in voucher printing. InDesign CS3 will not open for second user

I am running InDesing CS3 on a iMac 10.4.11. InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator all open for my admistrative user account. I recently created a second user account that is unable to open InDesign even though Photoshop and Illustrator open just fine. I checked the permissions for all three programs and it appears that they are all set exactly the same. Does anyone have any idea why I am only able open InDesign for my user account but not for this new user account.

5.0.3 should not have installed after 5.0.4 (that's a problem with the installer), and it may have added problems. First things to try, though, before we get down to uninstalling and reinstalling again, are trashing the prefs (Replace Your Preferences), trying a new user account, and starting with extensions disabled (hold down the Shift key when you boot).
If it comes to reinstalling again, you should probably also run the cleaner tool (CS Cleaner Tool for installation problems | CCM, CS6, CS5.5, CS5, CS4, CS3) before reinstalling, and make sure you have the correct update which you can download again from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4029

Where does InDesign CS4 get the name for the .icml file when using "Add to Assignment"?

I'm trying to figure out a larger problem with InDesign and InCopy files and was curious about where the names comes from. When I add a story to an assignment it doesn't ask me for a name. It seems it is using a name from sometime in the document's past.

Indesign CS3 AHHHHHHH!

I am having a few issues to say the least with Indesign CS3.
I have intel mac with the dual x 2 2.66 with 2g ram. running leopard.
I have been running CS3 for about a month now, and tried quite a few things to sort the problems. I have downloaded all the latest drivers/updates.
I have check the forums and some of these issues have been brought up before, but I could see and solutions as of yet. Also never seen anyone with all the same issues that I have.
I still have indesign CS1 on the system, and if I open up older documents in that I do not have any of the following problems.
Firstly.
I have a Xerox Docucolor 240 with Fiery Rip.
The problem is that if I have a job set up landscape in CS3, when I print it out, (as before in CS1 in would automatically rotate the image to fit the paper) but now in CS3 the job comes out on a sheet the portrait with half the image missing off the right-hand side.
I have a DPX System CTP - Computer to Plate System with harlequin ripmate.
The problem is that I send jobs through for the printers to make the plates. What used to happen when I ran CS1 and still does in CS1 is that the job would go through for the appropriate press. It would go into the job queue and wait until the printer need them and then they outputted them. It was nice and easy because the queue would have the job name and the pantone number as the file reference. But now using indesign CS3 the file name has been replaced with the press name, so if there are lots of files through for the same press the printer has to spend half his time check each job until he find the one he need.
Thirdly, and this is not to do with a printer, but it still annoying.
When I print out a document, I might only be printing page 1 of a multi page document, so what I do is print one copy of page one just to check that the document is. Then if everything was ok I would just press print and quickly enter the quantity and then print. Now after I have printed the proof page it resets the page range and if I forget (which does sometimes happen) I get all the pages. AHHH!!
Any help would be appreciated.

I have a similar machine configuration and have had many issues printing to an HP 9500mfp. Pages rotate, mirror, 2-sided both print on same side. I've lost the "bookletmake" function. Jobs will not recognize paper trays (meaning I have to manually tell it which paper tray holds the tabloid stock). I've tried using the "Page Setup" dialog box to no avail. On occasion, I can get some of the features to work with a pdf printing from Acrobat. Sometimes, that doesn't work either - never with any kind of predictability. Printing to the HP 4700 is more reliable. I've downloaded the updated "Leopard" compatible driver from HP, but it fixed no issues. When I tried contacting tech support for HP, the replied that this is an OS issues and not with equipment, leaving me SOL.

Indesign CS3-JS - Problem in reading text from a text file

I have an problem with reading text from an txt file. By "readln" methot I can read only the first line of the text, is there any method to read the consecutive lines from the text file.
Currently I am using Indesign CS3 with Java Script (for PC).

If you want to use readln, you'll have to iterate. I don't see a for loop in your example, so you're not iterating. To see how it works, take a closer look at FindChangeByList.jsx--you'll see that that script iterates to read the text file line by line (until it reaches the end of the file).

Bookmakrs work inside InDesign CS3 but not in the PDF (Reader or Preview)

I have a list of bookmarks set to specific pages. In InDesign they all lead to the correct pages but when viewing the PDF only two work right, the rest jumps to a different page. I checked the Bookmark description (hover over it in InDesign CS3) and they name the right page. What could I be doing wrong and why do some work? Thanks a lot!

How to change prices by percentage (indesign CS3)

Further to the V.A.T. changes in the UK this has raised some issues in a catalogue we are working on. All the prices are currently based on the old V.A.T. rate of 17.5 percent and we need to do a global change to 15 percent. Obviously the idea of going through and amending thousands of individual prices is not an option and assume someone must have done a plug-in or script, does anybody no of anything out there? we are currently using indesign CS3 - PLEASE HELP DEADLINE FOR PRINT IS WEDNESDAY!?!?!

Have you considered copying the text into Word then performing the percentage change? I am not aware of an option in InDesign that will do what you need. I hope someone else has a better answer.

Programatically determine installation location for InDesign CS3, CS4, CS5, AND CS5.5 (Windows)

We build plug-ins for all versions of InDesign from CS3 and later, for Windows and Mac.
To deploy our plug-in(s) on Windows, we use InstallShield, which has a somewhat complicated mechanism to locate InDesign.exe and determine its version so we know which plug-in(s) to install, but basically, the location is determined (via the RegLocator table in InstallShield) based on this registry setting:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\InDesign.exe
This has been working fine for all versions of InDesign since CS2. However, that location is apparently no longer set by the InDesign CS5.5 installer. So, we need to find some other way of programatically locating InDesign CS5.5 with our installer.
I've searched the registry of a machine with InDesign CS5.5 installed, and there are other registry entries related to InDesign, but those entries are not set by earlier versions of the InDesign installer. Ideally, there would be a registry setting, or some other reliable marker we can use to locate the InDesign installation, which is consistent across all versions of InDesign (at least back to CS3).
Using the registry setting is something we came up with on our own via trial-and-error, since, as far as I know, there is no documented way to locate the InDesign installation folder. (Our Mac installer uses a simpler mechanism to locate InDesign by the application name and version number.)
I find the apparent lack of documentation on this a bit ironic, since just about every other aspect of the SDK and the methods for creating InDesign plug-ins is extremely well documented, expect for the last final bit one needs to know to get to the promised land of actually deploying a carefully crafted plug-in to customers' machines. (This seems to be true of the Acrobat SDK as well.) However, I could have just missed the relevant documentation, in which case, please point me to it.
So, is there a recommended way to programatically locate the InDesign installation location on Windows? How are other people doing this in their installers?

Just kidding. I use a really hacky piece of VB to install my plugins while I'm developing...
here's the bit which works out the folder depending on which version I'm compiling for.
That gives you the gist anyway, and I imagine that most installers are going to do more or less the same thing, except they'll have short cuts ways of getting it.
There's probably a better way, but this works for me...

How to learn Indesign CS3 SDK programming for windows

Hi, I am very new to plugin development.I am working in Indesign CS3 SDK (windows). But I am not able to write /understand the syntax of InterfacePtr. for eg : InterfacePtr<IClassIDData> orgDocFileHandlerData(doc, IID_ORGICLASSIDDATA); We get Pointer of any Interface , and pass some arguments . So can anybody help how to learn this programming , I am not finding any books or tutorials on this so that I can read from the basic. I have only referred to Programming Guide(CS3). It's only my way of understanding about InDesign SDK : * SDK objects are know as 'boss(es)' and are accessed thru interfaces. * You can imagine object as collection of interfaces. And you can even aggregate new interfaces to existing objects. * When you have a reference to an interface of a boss, you can access other interfaces (of the same boss - or object) using the *amazing* syntax : (here, doc is a probably an IDocument interface on a kDocBoss object, and you want to access it's IClassIDData interface) InterfacePtr<IClassIDData> orgDocFileHandlerData(doc, IID_ORGICLASSIDDATA); * And finally, InterfacePtr has a reference counter, which allows the framework to destroy the interface object - not the boss of course, only the memory used by the object - when it's non mre referenced. Add User Name to Indesign CS3

We are printing lots of indesign CS3 documents to a number of laser printers. I have taken the Date and time option and changed PM and AM to the initials of the user of that computer. Makes it easier for someone to grab files from printer and return them to user. Problem is .... Does not work 100% of the time.... Is it possible to have an applescript to put users name somewhere on page outside the cropping area???

This simple script creates a text frame below the first page outside the cropping area and inserts the user name (File > User...) into it.
I assume that ruler units are set to millimeters, page size to Letter, bleed - 5 mm.

I have actually passed-in properly escaped text to document parser, but it is behaving vaguely.
I see the text I have posted in my initial post is parsed by forum.
Here is the text that is reported as error:
Actual Text: Hello "World"
Escaped Text passed to parser: Hello & quot;World& quot; (note: & and quot are indeed not separated)
Here is the text that is working fine:
Actual Text: Hello " World "
Escaped Text passed to parser: Hello & quot; World & quot; (note: & and quot are indeed not separated)
The difference in above two versions of text input is: quotes and word are separated by a space to work fine.
Please advise a solution.

Go to ESTK2's Help menu and choose the InDesign CS3 Object Model. In the viewer, choose Application in the Classes window and then look at its properties.
When you see blue text in the description window, it is linked, so you can click on it for more details if you are interested in further exploration of a related object.
