InDesign CS3 Help Menu opens constantly
The InDesign CS3 Help Menu opens constantly every time I click anywhere in a document to do anything.
Such as draw a box, insert type, anything. It virtually renders the program unuseable. I click to make an addition to a doc, travel up to the help menu to close it, do my thing, then repeat for the next action. Reinstalling has not stopped this. I cannot disable the Help Menu (which would be a fine solution BTW). I cannot afford to upgrade to CS4 right now. I am not sure that would stop it anyway. Photoshop, Illustrator, no other program in the CS3 suite exhibits this behavior. Anybody got any ideas? I recently recreated my whole OS and all programs on a new hard drive out of necessity. InDesign was doing this before that rebuild, and it does it now (after the reinstall). CS3 was reinstalled clean. That did solve a serial # issue with Acrobat where it wouldn't launch. I didn't transfer anything from the old hard drive except e-mail and internet settings.

Thanks for any help in advance, I appreciate your time.

Are you using the default keyboard shortcut set or a custom one? Also, are you using any special mouse, keyboard or tablet input devices?
Try going to Edit->Keyboard Shortcuts->Help menu Product Area and see what the default Help shortcut is. Perhaps it has been set to something crazy like "mouse click". You may just set the Keyboard Shortcuts back to [Default] set and see if that does the trick too.
Alternatively, something either software or hardware related in your setup is frequently triggering that event, which may be the case if you have a non-apple kbd, mouse etc installed.

CS3 Help menu opens after every command
I have a user that every time they finish a command like create a new document or rotate and object the help menu opens. This interrupts their workflow since you have to click off the menu before continuing. I have tried deleting the preferences but that didn't help. I have also booted into safe boot and this does resolve the issue. Is there an other setting or preference I can remove that would resolve this issue?
If I recall.. around the time of CS3 there were issues with Unsanity "haxies" causing this as well as other small third party OS add ons.
You might...
A) Include what OS you are using
B) If it's Mac OS, try booting into Safe Mode by holding down the shift key when starting up the system and see if the issue goes away. -
InDesign Help Menu open every time app is selected
Hey guys,
I have this ridiculous problem that just started today:
Every time I "⌘(command)+tab" from another app into InDesign, the "help menu" opens up... and it does it every time!!!
So let's say I ⌘+tab from word to in design. Once indesign opens the help menu opens up and I have to close it.
I've searched the net for solutions and I've even call apple support, but no one can give me any answers.
PLEASE HELP!I just figured it out,
I used activity monitor to see what was working when it was happening. A program I thought I had deleted was still running, APE (Application Enhancer) is what was creating all the problems!
Thanks for the help guys! -

CS3 has worked for 2 years so why and how to fix.
Thankyou J.I did a system restore on my system (Windows XP Pro) and cannot open Indesign CS3. When I tried the following error message appeared:
"The licensing subsystem has failed catastrophically. You must reinstall or call customer support."
I tried some of the suggestions here:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb402004
Indesign CS3 will not open so I cannot deactivate. The instructions say if you have an entire Suite installed, then you only need to deactivate from one application. But I cannot find deactivate anywhere in the other apps. Without deactivating, I cannot uninstall to reinstall.
There was no FLEXnet Licensing Service showing in services.
I tried renaming the FlexNet folder.
tried moving the cache.db file.
After trying these suggestions I now get the error:
"You cannot use this product at this time. You must repair the problem by uninstalling and then reinstall this product or contact Adobe customer support for help."

Help Menu Opens Everytime Open A Document
I have a crazy problem with Adobe Acrobat products. Every time I open a document with Acrobat Standard or Acrobat Reader the help menu opens and everything stalls until I click somewhere to close it. It just did it again when printing. The print progress dialog stalled until I closed the help menu.
This just started a couple months ago after using the programs for well over a year.
I'm using Acrobat Standard 7, Adobe Reader 5 on a Powerbook G4 running OS X 10.4.11.And Appleworks 6 came out in 2003 but NEVER has an OS update introduced a new bug in the program!
If an update from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11 caused this bug then I'd say the probability is that the program had the bug in the first place but didn't manifest itself until now. In all likelihood this is not a conflict with the OS but a setting or an extension that is conflicting. I was hoping someone might have an idea to help me, not try to get me to buy an upgrade.
And how does this bug occur in both programs yet one is a version 5 product and the other a version 7, both started doing the same thing at the same time. What is going on in the Adobe background to cause this? None of my other "Old" programs do this.
I may upgrade my Adobe reader even though that program has gotten so bogged down over the years. I will NOT upgrade Acrobat because I just don't use it's capabilities that much. I got it with a scanner and I really didn't need it when all was said and done.
I would still appreciate anyone that might have an idea of what caused this and offer a solution that doesn't involve buying upgraded software I don't need.
(Sorry for the rant but upgrade fever bothers me. I've actually edited this post down from my original rant.) -
InDesign cs3 crashes when opening CS2 documents
ID cs3 crashes when opening CS2 documents, not when open dialog appears, but after I choose file and it "starts" opening it. (core duo, xp, clean install, all updates)
If i open ID by opening file, it crashes with standard windows dialog, if I open ID first, it does not crash, but rather behaves strangely, nothing is opening, if I move a mouse it turns to sand clock.
Same thing happens on all machines with ID cs3 in my office.
All other apps works fine. I did read every single forum about ID crashing and nothing helps. Files resaved in interchange format opens well. There must be something in the files that ID cs2 did and what id cs3 cannot open :( Any ideas?1. Is there any reason to use eps? Avoid it use AI, PSD or PDF instead.
2. Are all used fonts ok? What kind of fonts du you use?
3. Which Mac OS X do you use?
Does it crash with alwayst the same files?
What does the file history tell you? Hold down the command key and got to InDesign > About InDesign… Does it tell you somewhat more specific, like missing plugins, severly damaged files and restored files, when (in which version) the files have been created first (helps often to export to IDML and open this again and save it as INDD and work with the new file.), has the problematic file been converted from another application (Quark Xpress or PageMaker), etc. -
InDesign CS3 crashes upon opening a file from Snow Leopard
Hello all. I'm desparately hoping someone can help me with this issue as I've spent the better part of my weekend working on two important files for work and would hate to start over.
I've been working at home in InDesign CS3. My home computer has Snow Leopard 10.6.2. I don't have any font managmenet plug-ins or programs other than Font Book. I started two new files and when I took them to work, both files crash InDesign upon opening. I don't get to open InDesign at all. My work computer has InDesign CS3 as well running Tiger 10.4.11. It is running Suitcase Fusion, which I've tried disabling and then trying to open the file to no avail. I've started the computer in safe mode to try and open the file, deleted preferences, disabled all fonts on the computer, repaired preferences, any and all suggestions listed on these forums and the rest of the internet. All of these solutions were met without success.
All files are stored on a portable hard drive. However, there are files on the drive that were created on the work computer that still open fine so I know the drive is a non-issue.
After InDesign crashes, I'll restart it just by clicking the program icon (not by double-clicking my file or dragging the file to InDesign) and it will crash all by itself. When I restart it again, it asks to repair the file that crashed it. Saying 'YES' crashes the program again.
This is a problem that just arose this morning and I have yet been able to go back home to try and open the files on my home computer. I'm praying my work computer did not corrupt the files somehow.
I'm hoping there is someone out there who can help me?I understand what you're saying regarding removeable media. I'm tying this message from home with much frustration. I copied the file off the drive onto my desktop, ejected the hard drive, and I get the same crash error:
"The application InDesign has unexpectedly quit. A crash report has been generated. To provide us with the best chance of fixing this problem, please select Continue to add a detailed description that includes the steps required to reproduce the crash. Adobe will use this crash report to help find a future solution to this problem."
I believe this might be relegated strictly to InDesign as a Photoshop file that was created from scratch, edited, and saved on the same hard drive next to the InDesign file opened perfectly.
I would love the opportunity to send you this file to see if you can open it on your system. I have a YouSendIt account if that works best. -
My Indesign CS3 suddenly started giving me problems when I tried to open it. I have used it for a year or so with no problem. Now, when I click to open the program, I get the moving donut (on Vista) that indicates processing is taking place, but after about 5 or so seconds, it just disappears and there is no further response from the computer. If I repeat this it will sometimes open (I have had it happen after about 5 to 30 attempts) and then the program runs fine.
I discovered, however, that each time I click to open, a process is started (taking up about 11 MB of RAM (but no application appears in the Windows Task Manager). After mutiple attempts at trying to open the program it starts to run out of RAM and I have to close some of the processes to continue.
Does anyone have an idea what is happening and how I might overcome it? All the other modules in my CS3 suite run fine. I'm running Vista Ultimate with full updates and CS3 V 5.0.4.Hi Matt,
I'm sorry, but I haven't got a fix. I declined the suggestion to do a System Restore since I don't want to spend the time (and risk the possibility of other problems occurring) without a more convincing diagnosis. I have been burned by such suggestions in the past when trying options without a good account of why it might help.
My current work-around is to keep trying to open by repeating the double-click on the Indesign icon until it opens. This means double-clicking, then waiting a while, and if it doesn't open, repeating it until it does. After InDesign (finally) opens, I open the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del), go to the 'processes' tab, search for all the Indesign processes that are NOT the one that is open then stop each of them one by one. You can tell which are the ones that are not open since their indication of memory is around 11K and it is unchanging. The open program takes up more memory than that and it changes.
Sometimes I have had to try to open Indesign with more than 30 tries, but eventually it opens. I have found that lately it opens after only 1 to 5 tries.
I'm surprised that they haven't diagnosed this problem yet - and set up a fix, but until this happens I guess I will continue this way until something more dependable comes up.
Regards,
OldTymer2

InDesign CS3 won't open after upgrading to Leopard.
I'm having an issue starting up Indesign CS3 since upgrading to Leopard. It seems like everything else has been working great, including the rest of CS3, so I'm kinda baffled as to why this doesn't.
When I open it, after loading for a few seconds, I get this error:
http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/255/picture1lg9.png
Any ideas?WOOOO HOOOO! IT IS JUST A FONT CONFLICT!!!!! I think....
After days of trying to figure out why, after installing Leopard, InDesign CS3 crashes every time I tried to open "certain" files... I finally figured it out - at least on my system. I emphasize "certain" files, because InDesign would open certain InDesign files flawlessly... and crash when trying to other InDesign files. I narrowed it down to a handful of files and the only thing that these files had in common was one particular font. Well as it turns out, upon installation, Leopard put a bunch of new fonts into my system folder. I am also using Suitcase Fusion to manage my fonts. When starting the "culprit" files, Suitcase Fusion would try to "auto-activate" a font that was already activated at start-up in the system folder. After removing the "duplicate" font from my system folder - and restarting my computer - everything was back to normal seems to work fine now. I am not much of a computer technician.... but this worked for me. Let me know if this helps you too. -
CS3 Help Menu "Move Items" Dialog Box
CS 3.0.1, WinXP Pro. When I open the Help menu, I get a dialog box called "Move Items." It lists folders and says, "Select the place where you want to move 'help.html' then click the Move button." I click Cancel, it comes up again, I hit Cancel, and the html Help file opens. I recently hit the Move button, and had to repair the installation to get Help to work again. Must that dialog box come up?
Thanks! Thanks Peter. However, the Move button blanks out when I choose that folder (which makes sense). If I move it somewhere else, Dr. Watson Postmortem shuts down and everything locks up or Help no longer works. Guess I'll just live with the infinitesimal inconvenience of the situation as is. I rarely use the Help menu, so it's not a big deal.

InDesign CS3 will not open double-clicked files on server (10.5)
I've got an odd one here. I have two new 10.6 machines running InDesign CS3, and a simple file server running 10.5.6.
When we open an InDesign file on the server using the "File Open" dialog box, the files open fine. If we navigate to a folder on server from the Finder and try to double-click on the file, it will launch ID if not open, but not open the file. It looks like it would open, but does not.
Does anyone have an idea why this might be happening? It would sure be easier for the kids to open files that way.
Dave RiedleI have this issue also. InDesign [CS4] begins to start up, the "initializing..." label appears, then it immediately quits. Started after I had to revert back to 10.7.3 from 10.7.4 due to frequent and incessant kernel panics in 7.4. I tried uninstalling all CS4 apps (using the CS4 uninstall tool), then ran Adobe Cleaner Tool, then did a clean install of CS4 (Design Premium), including a fresh input of the serial number. All other CS4 apps open normally.
Interestingly, upon your suggestion, I created a new user account, then tried to open InDesign there. It opened normally, so at least I can use it in the "Test Account" I created. Any suggestions on how to get it to work in my account?

InDesign CS3 will not open after installing updates
Hello,
I am having a problem printing borderless with InDesign CS3. When my paper size is set on borderless my photos print very light. If Iremove the borderless setting the photos print fine.
In a effort to correct this problem I downloaded and installed updates for InDesign CS3 now InDesign will not open.5.0.3 should not have installed after 5.0.4 (that's a problem with the installer), and it may have added problems. First things to try, though, before we get down to uninstalling and reinstalling again, are trashing the prefs (Replace Your Preferences), trying a new user account, and starting with extensions disabled (hold down the Shift key when you boot).
If it comes to reinstalling again, you should probably also run the cleaner tool (CS Cleaner Tool for installation problems | CCM, CS6, CS5.5, CS5, CS4, CS3) before reinstalling, and make sure you have the correct update which you can download again from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4029 -
Indesign CS4 Help Menu not working Mac OSX 10.6.7
Hello.
The InDesign Help menu is a great thing. Use it every day.
I use it most to find commands that I cant remember the keystrokes to. I activate the menu and start typing "find font" or whatever.
The menu finds alternatives. So far so good. But when I want to choose one alternative, all that happens is the system error sound plays.
Does anybody know how to fix this?
Cheers.
Mac Pro. OSX 10.6.7. InDesign CS4.I have two self-signed certificates that are marked as "not trusted", both created at the same date, but I did not remember doing that !
They are named:
com.apple.kerberos.kdc
System Identity
com.apple.systemdefault
from keychain System, expired am Feb 11, 2011Shall I trust then ? Is that the reason for my lock problem ?
+*I just notice that after locking the Keychain app, my problem is solved !!*+

Indesign CS3 crashes when opened under OS X network account
I have a user that log's in to their network account. She loads up Indesign CS3 and the splash screen appears as normal. After a minute or so the app will crash and bring up the Adobe report window. It is fine when loaded under a local admin account.
Has any one any ideas what this could be? It's obviously a network account issue, but im not sure where to look. Ive tried the usual deleting of the user account .plist, but no luck
Thanks

InDesign CS3 will not open for second user
I am running InDesing CS3 on a iMac 10.4.11. InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator all open for my admistrative user account. I recently created a second user account that is unable to open InDesign even though Photoshop and Illustrator open just fine. I checked the permissions for all three programs and it appears that they are all set exactly the same. Does anyone have any idea why I am only able open InDesign for my user account but not for this new user account.
~Thank You
