InDesign CS3 Print Booklet function

I have an issue with InDesign CS3 Print Booklet Function.
Certainly Print Booklet is not InBooklet by any stretch. It does however have to be an integral part of the InDesign Program(one of the reasons it is better than QuarkXPress).
Print Booklet takes the age old practice of creating 4 page signatures for booklets of 4-page multiples and when you get to 12-16 pages it mysteriously inserts blank pages making non-4 page multiple booklets. I have had 12 page booklets made into 14 and 16 page booklets into 18 pages.
Is there a fix for this issue forthcoming from Adobe, or has anyone discovered a workaround?
I do not want to teach students that they have to go to PDF's and use another way to impose, when it is an important part of InDesign.

>I click Printer Settings to make sure I've got spreads selected and crop marks etc.
Make sure you DON'T have the "print spreads" box checked when setting up to use Print Booklet.
>make booklet makes low res pages in an InDesign file and Booklet CE 3.5 makes a new InDesign file up of individual PDFs but the pages are all out of order.
I'm not sure what you mean by "make booklet makes low res pages." Are you referring to Dave's MakeBooklet.jsx script? That simply places the pages from an existing InDesign file into a new file in Printer spread order. It's up to you what sort of resolution any page element has in the original file, or what PDF settings you use to make a PDF from the new file. Perhaps you need to adjust your View > Display Quality setting?
The pages in an imposed file SHOULD be "all out of order." You are looking at printer's spreads, not reader's spreads. Are they not in the correct order for printing?

  • Help Please.  InDesign CS3 Print Booklet to PDF

I'm desperate for any help on this issue.  I have a Macbook Pro running Leopard OS X.  I currently have Adobe Acrobat 8.0 installed.  I'm trying to print a booklet from an InDesign file to a PDF.  Whenever I run through the prompts to Print to a PDF, the sequence starts and then a PDF never shows up.
If anyone can help me figure out why this feature is not working, I would be so grateful.  I'm getting ready to pull my hair out!

I'm afraid I'm not really going to be all that much help.
The PDF printer is killed by Snow Leopard, but that shouldn't be a problem for you, so it sounds like something else is going on. I'm going to defer to some of the Mac experts here on possible ways to reinstall the PDF printer or other possible fixes.

  • [Ann.] Before starting yet another discussion complaining about InDesign's "Print Booklet ..."

If InDesign's "Print Booklet" feature isn't doing what you want, please try the "Booklet SC 5.0" script (formerly "Booklet CE").
Unlike Print Booklet, Booklet SC doesn't force you to print ... instead, it creates a new InDesign document whose pages are in the proper "saddle stitch" (or perfect bound) order. This allows you to print wherever and whenever you want, or convert to PDF. Also unlike Print Booklet, graphics which span the reader spreads are handled properly.
Booklet SC optionally creates cut marks / printer marks on the output printer spreads, giving additional prepress flexibility.
Booklet SC should still work with earlier versions of InDesign, back to CS2 or so, and up through CS5, Mac and Windows.

(Note: after 3 usages, Booklet SC starts to nag you every third time to send $10, to support my espresso habit, reward me for spending all that time writing and testing this complex script, encourage me to keep the script up to date, and help me to know who is using the script. If you cannot afford the $10, you can either live with the nagging, or continue your struggle with Print Booklet.)
    The main dialog:
With an 8-page booklet, the pages are reordered like this:

    Hi Stephen,
Nice looking dialog. I added [Ann.] to the title to make it clear what this post is.
BTW, the dialog looks like it's a Script UI one. That will not work in CS2. Do you have a more basic dialog for CS2, or is this only for CS3-CS5?

  • Indesign CS4 - Print Booklet Help.

    Hi,
I have just been looking at the "Print Booklet" function in CS4 and was hopping you could help with some advice.
All of my jobs get sent to me as PDF's ready for imposing for our indigo 5000 Presses. From what i can see all I need to start using "Print Booklet" Effectivly is to find good .PDF importer plugin. What I was wondering is there another way of doing it (rather than placing each page seperatly from the PDF) and any sugestions of a good PDF inporting plugin (free if possible) would be great!
    Thanks in advance.
    /loki

If the artwork is supplied correctly then the indigo software can be great but still theres the time issue and unless you buy an extra lisence (not 100% certain on this just what ive been told) you can only have the software installed on the press work station. sadly though the artwork usualy isnt supplied right but the main problem would be time, with two presses running back to back prints + breakdowns etc theres just not enough time.
there is HP smartstream which is another software they offer for setting up documents for the indigos but after running the trial version a couple of times Its not actualy any better than using indesign with a couple of plugins.
If someone knows differantly or wants to argue the power of smartstream please do id be interested to hear it, I am only a beginner at pre-press after all

  • Placed QuarkXpress 7 eps into InDesign CS3 prints with slanted type

    any suggestions to fix?

placed QuarkXpress 7 eps into InDesign CS3 prints with slanted type
The problem may be in the HP print drivers.
Printing to Epson printers works, printing to HP 132, 5000 or 2200 produces slanted type, even at Adobe.
Printing to disk as a Postscript printer and then printing the ps file using the pdf printer works fine.

  • InDesign 4 -- printing booklet

I am building a publication, i set it in individual, facing pages 1-12...okay, i print as a booklet to get the pages 12,1 printed on one spread, 2,11 printed on one spread....and so on. I can print ALL the pages on the correct spreads at once, but can't figure out how to print just pages 12 and 1 as one spread.  Am I clear on this?  Do I have to set up a new publication and have it manually set up, or can I print from the Print Booklet menu to just print page 12 and 1 on one spread?

Congratulations, glad it worked!  Can anyone help with a similar problem described below where we have multiple chapter files we want to combine and print as a booklet using Print Booklet - Vista Ultimate, InDesign CS3 /Master Collection.
I am told Print Booklet does NOT work with the Book feature.

  • Distribution of InDesign CS3 Print Presets

Is there a way to "mass" distribute InDesign Print Presets for InDesign CS3?
Have a large list of Print Presets saved on a server. Would like to "push" them out to over 20 production Macs with CS3, using something like Apple Remote Desktop. Each Print Preset that exists on the server are also on one specific Mac. Each has a unique name. But can NOT find these names when doing a search on the Mac. Where are they actually being stored?

The CS3 print presets are stored in the ID Preferences (~/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/ Version 5.0/InDesign Defaults).
Here is a link to an InDesign Secrets article which talks about how to export the presets to a .prst file:
This article covers CS and CS2, but I'm guessing it's the same for CS3.

  • ID CS3 Print Booklet really needs help.

Have read all the posts regarding Booklet, and this feature really needs an overhaul. The PM 7.0 Booklet was far better. Surely there are thousands of printers who need to make up booklets, then as job develops, go in and make a change and rerun a single plate. This you could do in PM 7.0, and I assumed that CS3 would be an improvement over that even.

I don't think whoever responsible for coding Print Booklet had a clue of what they were doing or why.
PageMaker had a feature called Build Booklet. Previous versions of ID had a Build Booklet plug-in. This is PRINT Booklet, and the feature takes that idea mind numbingly literally. The only good thing to say about it is that it does exactly what it says if you follow its logic. But considering the following, I'm wondering if that wasn't just blind luck.
    From the Adobe Help:
    >If you dont want the entire document to be imposed, select Range in the Setup area and specify which pages to include in the imposition.
Use hyphens to separate consecutive page numbers, and commas for nonadjacent page numbers. For example, typing 3-7, 16 imposes pages 3 through 7 and 16.
Printing from a 20 page document, that would return the following spreads:
    blank - 3
    4 - blank
    16 - 5
    6 - 7
You ask for six pages, and get four spreads of two. There is a perfect logic at work here. But it just makes no sense.
I am left wondering what Adobe was thinking. Who would ever WANT to print a selection of pages as printers spreads that are completely irrelevant to the original document? They should be embarassed.

  • CS3 print booklet margins problem

Thanks to the help of this forum, I can now print my 12-page newsletter as a booklet with 3 sheets of tabloid paper.  BUT ... one new problem is that the leading edge of each printed sheet has a small margin, making the center become off-center, and the far edge of the sheet has a large margin.
Any ideas out there of what I'm doing incorrectly?
    Thanks.

This could be caused by asking for printers marks if the page position in the setup dialog is set to upper left, or even without marks if the sheet is larger than required to hold both pages and the position is upper left. The cure for that is to click the Print Settings button in the Print Booklet dialog and change the positioning to "centered."
Also, many inkjet printers have asymetric margins which can potentially throw off even centered content or cut off part of the trailing edge of the page.

  • InDesign CS3 Print PDF (page printed shifted 0.125 downward)

    Hi,
I'm currently using CS3. Everytime I print the booklet/catalog to pdf file, the whole document seems to be shifted down .125in in the printed pdf file. The files looks fine when I view in preview mode in InDesign, it only does it when I print pdf. Does anyone have solutions to the problem?
    Heidi

Looking at the print dialogs, it appears to me that the problem is you are trying to print bleeds on the same size sheet as the document page.
What you are seeing in the preview is the result of selecting "upper left" positioning and including the bleed, which is pushing the page image down and to the right by the amount of the bleed. You need to print bleeds on oversize stock and trim. To do that accurately you'll want to include trim marks, too. If printing two sides it's also essential to set the positioning to centered (and don't even try this on an inkjet printer with uneven non-printing margins). Don't expect miracles from digital printers for side-to-side position registration on two sided prints. They just aren't that accurate.
I'm not familiar with your Sharp printer, but my guess is that if you have a border on the right side of the print it's because of the non-imaging area on the page (only a few printers are capable of printing all the way to the edge, and, as far as I know, they scale the image to do so, and would not be a good way to print books with bleeds).
That doesn't answer the question of why you'd have a white edge printing to PDF. The answer to that seems to be in the Acrobat display settings. In Acrobat, Edit > Preferences > Page Display and uncheck the box for "Use 2D Graphics Acceleration" and I think the white line will disappear.

  • InDesign CS3 Printing Issue

I recently installed the CS3 Suite including InDesign, Flash, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, et al. I am not able to print anything from any of my CS3 apps. CS2 continues to perform just fine, and I've been forced to save down CS3 docs to CS2 just so I can print. Any suggestions on remedies? Again, this is across the board CS3 apps, not just InDesign. I'm running a Mac G5 using Airport Extreme as my wireless router.
    Thanks in advance -

    Hi Barry -
When I use Command-P, I get the usual dialogue boxes in InDesign but the print utility doesn't show in my dock as it normally does in CS2. When I installed my latest OS, I manually configured the printers including selecting each PPD. I have not re-installed the drivers, however. I'm using Leopard - 10.5x. I have installed all available updates from Mac and Adobe. I have two printers, Epson for my finer jobs and Brother for everyday tasks. Both printers work fine out of CS2. I alternate them by plugging/unplugging each from the back of my Airport Extreme as I need them. My computer tower is in a cabinet under my desk and it's a bear to pull it and all peripheral wires out so I haven't tried a direct connect.
    Thanks -

  • Indesign CS3 printing alignment issues with Konica Bizhub

    Hi,
I am designing documents in ID CS3 to print inhouse on our Konica Minolta BizHub 350 through a Fiery. I will set up a document with at least .375 inch border all the way around. I'll print it, sometimes the documents are duplex, and it's all good. A month later I will go to print this document again, same print set up options and everything is shifting to one side, sometimes as much as .5 inch. Our printer technicians have been out here and found that we did not have the appropriate Fiery driver. So we downloaded and installed that and everything seemed to be fine until today, I go to print a document that had previously been set up and everything is shifting to the side. I went in and selected the paper size rather than let it be defined by driver and it helped a little but it's still off. Same thing happens on business cards. I'll set up the business card template in InDesign, futz with it to make sure it's printing within the card size (I can't tell you how many sheets of business card paper I've had to toss trying to work this out) and works great. Next time I go to print the cards, everything is shifted up by a quarter of an inch.
This makes no sense to me. Am I doing something wrong in InDesign? Has anyone else had this problem? I just can't spend hours realigning every document that I've already created every time I have to print them. Please help.
    Mina

You may see about getting upgraded to the Creo print management software for the BizHub over the Fiery. Despite it having its quirks it does pretty well.
We have had great luck with our BizHub though it only runs 6 hours per day. Only have to have service for PM kits. I don't know about those who require so much more service on theirs, perhaps they aren't built for 24/7 continuous operation. Ours certainly has no trouble being ran through the little one shift routine we put it through. Again, we don't really push the thing, just a hair under a quarter million impressions a year with a variety of odd stocks. For a specialty machine that does our short runs and one offs it is a really nice machine, though not something I'd just hit "print 1000" without reviewing an initial proof.
If you need to have it serviced that frequently and are getting inconsistent results that you speak of I think you are running the machine incorrectly. The gentleman that runs our was previously running a hand crank letter press for the last twenty years. It and a couple black and white production printers are his only exposure to computers at all. You should have someone educate you on how to properly run the machine if you are continually running into these problems, or get a $300 PC and a copy of Adobe Reader to do the printing for you like we do.

  • InDesign CS3 Print Presets

Have a print preset that creates a PDF w/thumbnails, used successfully in CS2, which put the PDF file on the desktop. Loaded all our print presets into CS3, looks like file was created, but cannot for the life of me figure out where the file went! Looked everywhere in Finder ... any ideas?
(Would love to export to PDF w/thumbnails, but I don't see a way to do that?)

No, that setting only puts the thumbnails in the side bar.
I'd love to see your script that included them as an extra page. Can you share? Oh, wait, I think I misunderstood, You mean you want to print what amounts to a contact sheet of PDF pages.
Your script may have some code that is CS2 specific (thought I'd expect it throw an error) which could be corrected by one of the folks who write scripts.
Another possibility is doing it out of bridge, but I don't know what that would take, either.

  • Adobe InDesign CS3 Printing Glitch

Not sure if this is an issue with the printer drivers or InDesign, but anytime I try and print from InDesign with a document that has a rotated image it will glitch and half of the rotated image will be rotated even further.
Any thought or Idea's or hopefully a solution?
    Thanks.

is there a consistancy to the failing file format? is this always .eps links or would an rotated ID frame fail.
Have you checked for a most up to date driver for the printer, and what printer type; does this happen if exported to pdf?
