InDesign CS3; Tables; Adding a Column on Left
I currently have a 7 column Table.
Would like to add an additional Column to the LEFT side of the group?? The default is to add to the right of the exisiting group.
Thanks
Select the far left column and right click. Choose Insert / Column and the option to insert on the left or right will be available.

InDesign CS3 crashing adding table style...HELP!!
This issue started on Friday. I just starting working on a large document that will have many tables throughout, so I must use the table styles. Here is the order in which I do things to get the crash.
Place document from Word in to InDesign document
Highlight table to be changed
Convert text using paragraph styles
Alter column widths to fit page
Highlight entire table to select table style
Click desired table style
CRASH!!!!
I have tried the following things with NO LUCK:
Deleted adobefntX file multiple times (actually worked for a couple of hours first time I did it)
Deleted InDesign preferences (did nothing)
Re-created all "Styles" in InDesign (Character, Paragraph, Cell, & Table) (Did nothing)
Changed the order in which I altered the tables text and formatting (thinking it was just a silly order problem)
Unistalled and Re-installed CS3 (worked for 5 tables and then CRASH)
Updated ALL software (Adobe and Mac)
Started up in Safe mode and CRASH!!!
I realize from seraching for this problem on the web that I am probably the ONLY person having this issue, but I thought it was a font problem until I started in Safe Mode and still crashed. I am totally confused as to what I should do next. I am running on a

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.I am not familiar with InDesign Interchange, do you think this will help?
That's why I suggested it. But you didn't answer my question: Is this happening with only one file? The reason I ask is because if one file is corrupted, saving to INX and back to INDD often clears out minor corruptions. If you're seeing this in many files it's unlikely they're all corrupt.
1. Convert text using paragraph styles - I meant modified "placed" text using character styles
Now I'm really confused. Your steps are:
Place document from Word in to InDesign document
Highlight table to be changed
Modify placed text using character styles
Are you really highlighting an entire table and applying a character style? While this will work to modify certain formatting aspects, it's not really the best approach. Character styles are for characters *within* a paragraph. Paragraph styles are for *entire* paragraphs. Each table cell contains at least one full paragraph, even if it's just a single number, a space, even if there's nothing there at all. If you want to format the contents of an entire cell or range of cells with the same formatting, use a paragraph style, not a character style. If you want to italicize one or two words in some text in a cell (the way I just did), then use a character style.
I really feel that the issue either stems from fonts or from placing the document from Word.
Could be. Cheap fonts are the cause of many problems in Indesign. Indesign is really picky about fonts. But let's try the easy fix first (INX). If you don't trust it, save the .inx to a new .indd filename (keep your old .indd file as a backup).

InDesign CS3; Tables; How to remove vertical stroke??
Have an 8 column table with 1/2pt vertical stroke/rule between each column. How can I remove/delete only the vertical stroke/rule between column 7 & 8??
Select your columns.
In the cell stroke box, click on the strokes to select and set the weight. -
InDesign CS3 crashes on certain commands
I have Indesign Cs3. It was doing strange things so refreshed my preferences which solved the issue.
Since then, I cannot create a pdf from a new document, it crashes. But I can from a document created prior to the preferences refresh.
It also crashes when I do the find and change command?
If anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated. ThanksThanks Peter but still having the same issue.
Crash report below, if you or anyone can let me know if there is anything I can do from this?
Thanks

Problem XML table in INdesign CS3 - coming in as tables not rows
hi
I am creating a pricelist in Indesign CS3 with xml
everyting is workin except when the xml imports it puts the data in seperate tables not in one table.
I have 5 colums in a table of 1 row.I select the table & tag it story, then select the row & tag it row.
i then select each column & tag itby the individual column names - ProductName, Description, etc
this matches the xml file structure eg
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes" ?>
- <Root xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
- <Story>
- <Row>
<Category>Acacia Wattles</Category>
<ProductName>Acacia acinacea</ProductName>
<CommonName>GOLD DUST WATTLE</CommonName>
<Description>Hardy small-medium shrub. Golden ball flowers August to December. Suitable for dry or moist soils, gravel or sandy soils. Frost tolerant.</Description>
</Row>
- <Row>
<Category>Acacia Wattles</Category>
<ProductName>Acacia baileyana</ProductName>
<CommonName>COOTAMUNDRA WATTLE</CommonName>
<Description>Evergreen small tree with silvery grey foliage. Golden flowers in winter, young foliage purple</Description>
</Row>
</Story>
</Root>
the structure in the view panel is
Root
- Story
- Row
Category
ProductName
CommonName
Description
all the info comes in perfectly but it makes a separte table for each row rather than one table with a nmuber of rows of information
can anyone help pleaseHi Chook,
Here is the xml file for your reference. Just import the xml file in InDesign and Pour the xml in textframes it will automatically create the table for you.

Importing single Excel columns into InDesign CS2 Tables?
Hi, I have an Indesign CS2 doc with existing tables. I need to import data from Excel...but I just want to import certain columns. It doesn't seem to cut and paste, as it would into a tabbed format in Indesign. Is there a way to do this? I don't want to import the whole table from Excel and go through all the formatting again.
OS X Tiger Mac G5
THANKS SO MUCH!!!Jenny,
InDesign CS3 supports what you want. In CS2, you can use
my PopTab shareware script. The name stands for "Populate Table From the Clipboard."

Tables - auto align and place near citation
Figures - place near citation with caption
Its urgentok, well, you may want to ask a question, rather than just stating what you need to do. also, people are helping you for free, so writing it's urgent won't get you very far.

I don't have CS3 anymore but I don't think this has substantially changed in the last few versions of InDesign.

Adding a column to a DB table with CMP entities
Morning all.
I've been asked whether adding a column to a database table will break the CMP entity bean (EJB2) associated with the table. I suspect that it won't and that the new field will be ignored. Another developer here says that it will no longer compile (I can't see how this could be the case but still...) and I can find no evidence to either refute or corroborate either position.
Can anyone tell me for definite - if we add a column to a database table mapped to a CMP entity bean, will we HAVE to update the bean, or can we leave it ignorant of the new column?
(For the purposes of the question, please assume that the column has no constraints i.e. can be null etc.)
Thanks in advance
-- kaideejee
Message was edited by kaideejee : CMB entities? What are they? Typo fix.Well alterations(adding / removing a column) to the
table should be made available to the bean
irrespective of the persistance(CMP OR BMP) or normal
bean with your own methods that depicts the
behaviour.
reason is simple: probably bean may/may not contain
the corresponding setter or getter or finder methods
related to the ALTERED TABLE(NEW COLUMN)The reason for what is simple? Sorry I may have missed your point there. Are you saying that it's correct practice to make it available to the bean, or that it will be made available behind the scenes, subject to getters/setters being created?
Assuming we choose not to create these getters and setters (we have a horrible hybrid monster which uses stored procedures for some things and EJB for others, so it's feasible that the EJB end may not need to see some fields used by other parts) would the entity beans continue to play nicely with the database rows, or would the additional columns throw it completely?

File size comparisons, InDesign CS3, CS4 and CS5?
Hi, all.
It seems there was a trend for several major releases where each time Adobe released a new version of InDesign and InCopy, average file sizes grew by 20% or so from the old release to the new release, at least back in the older CS days. Has this trend continued, such that file sizes in CS4 are substantially larger than file sizes from CS3, and CS5 files are substantially larger than those from CS4?
Adobe, of course, wants to keep writing functionality that will keep the user community coming back to buy in to upgrades. The added functionality sometimes comes at a cost beyond the price tag. If file sizes are larger in a newer version, then page saves over a network or to a database are likely to be slower, and user productivity takes a hit while users are waiting for files to be saved.
Has anyone done any testing to build the "same" page in multiple versions of InDesign to understand what the effect is on the file sizes? I'm specifically interested in the file sizes between InDesign CS3, CS4 and CS5. To be meaningful, the test page would have to be at least moderately complex, with a couple of photos, multiple text elements and so forth. By "same," the page wouldn't take advantage of new functionality in newer versions but would be saved as a native page of the current version, though the file sizes may be bloated by the new functionality like it or not.
If you've done any testing along these lines, I'd like to hear more about it.
Thanks.
MarkThe overall structure of ID's files have been exactly the same for -- as far as I can see back -- CS. No change at all, in there.
There have been significant additions to the 'global' spaces; stuff like InCopy user data, table styles, object styles, and cross references. Each of these add a major chunk of data to each file, whether you use it or not, plus a few bytes per object (again, whether you use them or not -- ID also needs to know where you did not use them, that's why). I think these might be the main source of 'global' file size increase (a single object style in one of my files, for example, eats up a healthy chunk of 11,482 bytes).
For the rest, all new stuff like 'span columns' is a handful of bytes per paragraph style. Tracking changes may very well double the size of text runs -- but 1 character takes up 1 byte of storage (plus perhaps some overhead of indicating its 'tracking' status). Any single measurement unit always uses 8 bytes at least (for example, the left inset for a column span -- even if it's not used, or set to 0pt).
I think we're talking about a couple of K's here (oh -- perhaps a max of a hundred or so), in a file format that has been designed around the concept of "disk pages", each 4K big, meaning that sometimes adding one single character to a text box increases the file size by 4 K.
Your idea of comparing the size of a file created in CS3 against the same saved as CS4 and as CS5 is certainly feasible -- I might try it some time, just to confirm it's purely the extra 'new objects' data that accounts for the size increase and to confirm my guesstimates of the number of Ks involved. -
InDesign CS3: Problem in creating assignment files through API.
I had written some code for InDesign CS2 that allows user to
create an empty Assignment file, export any selected pageitem and add to the Assignment, save the assignment.
Now I have ported the same code for InDesign CS3 by following porting guidelines.
I am facing an issue in saving the article. When any page item is exported and added to the assignment, the exported file name displayed under the newly created assignment in Assignments Palette of InDesign. But when i save the assignment the exported file is moved into UnAssigned InCopy Content in the palette.
Also the final InCopy file doesnot contain link to exported page item file(.incx).
I am using the following API in my code,
void ExportStoryAndCreateLink(const UIDRef & story,const IDFile & file,
const FileTypeInfoID & fileTypeID
) [virtual]
Please post in this thread if any one has come across this issue.
Thanks in advance,Hi vivek,
Have you tried adding the same document with the client ?
OACT is the accounts table and this error message typically indicates that there is an account parameter missing somewhere in the system.
Possible causes include:
- you are using a tax group or warehouse which does not have all the required accounts set
- There is a price rounding and the rounding price account has not been set in the account settings
- etc.
The first things I would check include the tax group settings and the G/L Account determination settings.

Is there a way to make a "table header" a column instead of a row?
I am making a 508 compliant pdf from a predesigned indesign document that has many tables in it. The table that I am having problems with doesn't have it's table header as a Row at the top of the table but instead a Column that runs down the left side like this example:
To be read correctly in the pdf by screen readers the header needs to be included in the table but I don't know how to make a column a header, I have only found the option of making a row a header. Is there a way to do this or will I just have to retag and reorder the tags in the pdf after?
Thanks!@Joel – ah, now I begin to understand.
Slapbet wants to change the reading order in a two column table from:
Usually:
1 2
3 4
5 6
to:
1 4
2 5
3 6
If so, you need two separate tables:
One for column 1, one for column 2.
Grouped together, anchored in a text frame with the flowing text.
Could the every column is a single table construct work for you?
Or is it necessary for what ever reason (besides editing) to work with a single table?
A script could help to split every column to a single table, making a group and anchor it to the text flow.
Or did I misunderstand what the problem here is?

Aligning numerals and numerals in brackets within InDesign CS5 table
Hi there... I have a curly question that I have nearly cracked but it is still eluding me just slightly.
A project I am working on (Annual Report) within InDesign CS5 (Mac) contains a lot of tables with numbers listed in the financial section, as you'd expect.
I want to align all the list of numbers so that if one cell (within the table) has a series of numbers and then the next cell has another set of numbers but this time it is bracketed, that the last numeral without brackets will align with the last numeral within the brackets.
So essentially you would look at the list and the numerals will align up and down, bracketed or not...
I have been able to work this out outside of tables and within a table that is a set column width but my issues start when this style is applied to a column width that varies from the origin one where the style was created... unfortunately the columns throughout the financial section will vary in size and I can't keep making different individual styles for each varying column...
I hope someone out there has had a similar experience and can provide an answer to this what would seem fairly simple issue.
Thanks in advance.Would it be too much work to highlight each column:
Align Left
Using Tabs:
Use Align to Decimal
Change Decimal to ]
Center this tab in Column -
Adding the columns dynamically in crystal report
Hi,
I am developing a application using asp.net and crystal report. In a report the column is created dynamically( ie, the report gets input from a sp which returns N no. of columns). Since i dont know the column name and no. of columns at design time i am not able to create the report. If any of you have any idea on adding the columns dynamically please send me the code or the link.
Thanks

InDesign CS3 place image, application quits.
Hi there
I've had a look around the forum but can't find an answer relating specifically to this problem. This is what happens:
Specific to this machine, if you create a picture box and go to place file, browse to the server and select the jpeg to be used. Image imports and all OK. On the second attempt either creating a new pic box or importing to the original, the place browse dialogue box defaults to the server (which is a windows server) as you would expect however, you cannot browse backwards through the columns on the server and when you click the lookup drop down list the application quits straight away. This problem does not occur if the files are local i.e. on the Desktop.
It seems the application has a problem looking at the server for the second time, if you start browsing from the root of the server on the very left column then this is not a problem but if you go to the drop down it quits!
InDesign CS3 5.02
Intel Mac 10.4.11
It seems to be mac specific not just the user profile as I have created another user profile with same issue.
Any help greatly appreciated.Hi, thanks for your replies.
I have since upgraded the adobe suite to 5.04, I also get the problem in Photoshop CS3 as well.
What I don't understand is that a user with 5.02 ID and Tiger 10.4.8 (older versions than problem Mac) is not experiencing this problem.
Is it worth trying to put the crash report in to this thread even though it is very long?
I am not sure what else to put here.
Thanks for your help.
