InDesign CS3 vs. Framemaker/Ventura

Has anyone used InDesign CS3 for producing long, text-intensive, books? How does it compare to Framemaker or Ventura? Will InDesign handle multi-page tables, for example? Is it possible to rotate multi-page tables 90 degrees (landscape table on a portrait page) without breaking them? What about footnotes, endnotes, etc.? Comments from users with experience in all three would be most welcome.

bbsydney --
Given your description of your project -- a long, structured book composed of many text files and many images -- I'd think that Ventura would probably work best for you, simply because I just think it's by far the best software package out there for that type of job.
But as a long-time Ventura user -- and big-time Ventura fan -- I'd advise you to use InDesign instead, for the very concerns you've given. I'm not plugged in to the Corel community nearly as much as others, but I haven't heard any glimmer of hope from anyone that Corel plans to do anything with Ventura in the future. A big problem is that Ventura was written using a lot of Draw 10 code, but now that Draw is at version 14, I suspect Corel won't want to expend a lot of resources to completely overhaul Ventura to create a new version for it.
My biggest concern over Ventura's future is exactly what you've mentioned: that it won't be usable at all seven to 10 years down the road when Bill Gates rolls out a new OS. I know several Ventura users who say it runs just fine on Vista, but there's a great deal of doubt as to whether it will run at all on the next OS generations.
I guess it's possible that Adobe will stop producing publishing software in the future, but this seems unlikely given that ID has become such a dominant player. On the other hand, Corel effectively stopped producing publishing software over five years ago.
This is actually why I'm here at all on Adobe's site. I've reached the point where I feel I need to explore other options since I'm uncertain whether Ventura will be a future option for me at all. I have several projects I may not ever move to ID, but I at least want to know what it will take to do so in case I ever need to.
You also asked about FrameMaker, which I also looked at briefly for my projects. I found that even the latest version of it couldn't handle several important tasks I would need it to do for the types of products I publish which, like yours, are research-based and include numerous text files/articles, tables, figures, and images. My understanding is that FrameMaker is primarily used by book publishers who need to be able to pour mainly text into a long, highly structured documents. But my experience with it was that it just couldn't do what I would need it to do in terms of producing complex tables and efficiently laying out magazine spreads, which are the tasks that take up the most of our production time.
I don't think FrameMaker's future is as bleak as Ventura's, but on the other hand Adobe recently released a long-awaited new version of it and apparently it didn't exactly blow its users away with a slew of new capabilities and features. Like Corel, Adobe seems to not be sure what to do with FrameMaker. Unlike Corel, however, Adobe does actually know FrameMaker exists...
Hope this helps.

  • Is there a way to export data from Framemaker 7.0 to InDesign CS3 for the MAC

    I am asking this question for our Advertising department so I am not too close to the situation. Another company that is part of oujr platform designed their catalogs in Framermaker 7.0. We have Framemaker 6.0. The only reason we have it is to work with this other version of Framemaker 7.0. Our advertising people use InDesign CS3 for the Mac. Right now Advertising gives the person with Framermaker 7.0 changes to be made to their catalog. He exports the file as an IMF file and she pulls it into Framermaker 6.0.
    We tried to upgrade from Framemaker 6.0 to 9.0, but that wasn't possible.
    Ideally we would like to take a 600 page catalog created with Framemaker and convert it to InDesign.
    We would also like to take the files created with Framemaker 7.0 and import them into InDesign.
    Is there a way to do this?
    Thanks in advance.
    dh

    You can convert FrameMaker MIF (interchange) files to InDesign with the dtptools.com MIF Filter plug-in for InDesign. The plug-in is free, because you have to pay for the pages you convert. The bigger bundle of pages you buy, the lower cost per page.
    dtptools.com also has a really free plug-in for FrameMaker that converts .fm files to .mif, whole directories at a time.
    The converted InDesign files usually look very close to the original FM files, but it's possible to create things in FM that fools the converter, so you'll need to look the conversions over carefully.
    I reviewed MIF Filter in some detail in InDesign Magazine in a late 2007 issue.
    You should be aware that InDesign CS3 is no longer sold, so you can't buy more copies for all your users to be working in the same release. While it's possible to exchange files between ID CS3 and CS4 there are some things that don't convert perfectly, so you'll still have to inspect closely. I believe the most-common issue is text reflow.
    It's not clear if you intend never to go back to using FrameMaker for any of the catalog work, except perhaps for creating original text.
    Without seeing an example of the catalog pages, it's impossible to recommend any useful strategies. You can post a screen shot to this forum by clicking the camera icon in the button bar above the reply entry area. Inserting with the camera puts the picture on the forum very quickly, vs. attaching the picture as a file (it takes hours or days.)
    There may be other strategies for creating your catalog.

  • Adobe Illustrator CS3 and FrameMaker 8 - Are interactive rollovers possible?

    Hello,
    I recently read an article (see URL below) that talked about using InDesign to create rollover effects on graphics, that would carry forward
    as the graphic was brought into FrameMaker and then saved out as a PDF.
    http://www.creativetechs.com/iq/make_a_pdf_portfolio_with_interactive_rollovers.html
    Can Illustrator CS3 allow me to take a drawing, screen capture or photograph (graphic with callouts drawn on top of the photo)and add interactive rollover effects? Or, is Illustrator CS3 limited in what it can provide for interactivity, compared with InDesign CS3, Fireworks CS3 and Flash CS3 and Photoshop CS3. I would prefer to work in Illustrator CS3.
    Also, I would prefer to either place the .ai file format right into FrameMaker (linked to file) as that seems to work very well. Note, I am trying to stay away from SVGs at this time.
    Can I create an interactive drawing or graphic and save it (e.g. ai, png format) so that the end result is an interactive PDF, as shown in the samples on the website above?
    Thanks for your responses. It is very much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Jim

    Yes.
    Select the object. Choose Effect > Distort & Transform > Transform
    Tick the Reflect box. Set the 9 point origin indicator to the reflect origin you want. Set the "copies" box to 1. Click OK.
    You should then be able to alter the original object and see changes in the reflection.

  • Text Wrap options not showing in InDesign CS3

    Using InDesign CS3 on a Mac 10.4.  I've had this problem for a couple of months now and it's getting past the point of annoying.  When I open my text wrap options pallete it's blank even when I expand options.  I can see the text wrap icons in my header panel, but I no longer have options to change the right/left/top/bottom margins.  Just a general "add wrap" and "remove wrap".  Is there any way I can get my pallete back?  I've tried defaulting my tools, but still it does not show up.  I don't know what to do to get it back.

    Did you try resetting preferences? While pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files. If you don't get the message about deleting preferences, you weren't fast enough.

    I'm trying to install InDesign CS3 Server on Windows Server 2008 R2 64BIT (x64) Edition, however, we get a failure indication on the installer. Before, we have installed it properly on Windows Server 2008 R2 32BIT (x32) but some how we cannot proceed on a x64 box.
    Is there any limitation on this sense? Any documentation about it?
    Thanks and appreciate your answers.

    Note: There is a File Upload limitation in IIS 7 on Windows 2008 Server, IIS will reject any file that is
    larger than 30 MB. This is a default limitation of IIS. You can increase the maximum file size by
    setting the parameter maxAllowedContentLength in the file ApplicationHost.config.
    The following command can be used to set the parameter from the command prompt, please
    change the directory to Windows\System32\inetserv and then execute the command.
    appcmd setconfig /section:requestFiltering/requestLimits.maxAllowedContentLength:150000000
    The value is only an example, in this case the upload limit is set to 150MB.Server has to be restarted

  • Installing InDesign CS3 on Mac OS 10.9.5 Mavericks

    Installation of InDesign CS3 on Mac OS 10.9.5 Mavericks
    This question is Not Answered.
    s c perks Oct 14, 2014 6:04 AM
    1. I have InDesign CS3, which I bought about 6 years ago, and installed on my MacBook Pro. I have now got a new Mac Pro running OS 10.9.5 Mavericks. When I bought the machine I asked Apple if I would be able to install my InDesign and they said there would be no problem. But it will not install. The intsllation fails every time near the end. It installs Bridge and one other components, both of which it calls shared components. But InDesign is not installed.
    I went to the Adobe web site and looked up what to do. I got to a page that had my product on and it seemed to be telling make I must download an installer. When I clicked on this link, however I got a page with the following message:
    HTTP ERROR: 404 /support/downloads/dlm/main.jsp
    RequestURI=/support/downloads/dlm/main.jsp
    I do not know what to do now.
    2. If I do download an installer (I did not need to do this when I first installed the programme on my lap top MacBook Pro 6 years ago, but just installed it from the disc), how do I get rid of the downloader afterwards, since I read somewhere, but cannot remember where, that I should get rid of the installer afterwards but that I should not put it in the trash bin?
    Thank you for any help you can give me.
    Stephen Perks

    Many thanks for your help. I will try this. After posting this question yesterday I contacted Adobe and was astonished to find that they do not sell InDesign and do not support it and that one can only upgrade to monthly or yearly rental of CreativeCloud. I'm afraid for me this is nonsense, and I consider it very bad practice on Adobe's part. I will have to go to QuarkExpress instead if I cannot install Indesign CS3, which I nearly did do 6 years ago, but after reading such good reviews of InDesign and got it. I wish now I'd got Quark! I appreciate your help.

  • Indesign CS3 : Inset spacing preview in text box not there anymore.

    Hi!
    In Indesign CS2, I could see a "preview" of the inset spacing of my text boxes in "Preview Mode (W)".
    In Indesign CS3, I can't see it anymore unless I move my text boxes (the preview of the inset spacing of my text boxes shows only when I move the boxes).
    This is bad, because I can't see really fast which boxes have inset spacing and which ones don't.
    Please help me!
    Thanks,
    Chris.

    Yes.
    Normal Mode hides all of those things. But Preview Mode shows all of those things (unless otherwise selected in the "View" menu).
    I need to see the inset spacing of my text boxes in Preview Mode without having to move them.
    Here is an image of my text box in Preview Mode (guides, invisible characters, etc. are visible, but not the inset spacing): http://www.chris.lafacade.com/share/01.jpg
    Here is an image of my text box in Preview Mode while I move my box. As you can see, the inset spacing shows: http://www.chris.lafacade.com/share/02.jpg
    I need the inset spacing to show all the time in Preview Mode.
    Thanks!
    Chris.

  • Creating an index in InDesign CS3 - is there any way to limit where and for what it looks?

    I'm creating an index for a 300-page book using InDesign CS3 on both a PC with Windows XP home and a MacPro with OS X Leopard (I take this book back and forth between these two computers). I have created this as a book (.indb) file so I can use the Index panel with the book option checked to include all of the book chapters.
    There are two things I was wondering how to do, if they can be done at all.
    1 - I want the index to look for entries in the main pages only, not in the master pages.
    2 - I'd like to be able to do only attributed text. For example, I'd like the index to find only the word people when it is bold and italic, and not all of the other places it may occur. Can I do this with a style also, paragraph and/or character?
    Thanks so much,
    Marcy

    Read http://help.adobe.com/en_US/InDesign/6.0/WS8721440D-5F68-4fd6-8115-CA3BEDACF001a.html (the online Help on indexes) -- it will probably answer a few questions.
    One I do know immediately is your question on "picking up" stuff from master pages and only with formatting. InDesign does not make an index for you -- you have to (oh! manual labor!) mark the words that should appear in the index yourself. So just don't mark them on master pages, or when not bold and/or italic. You might be wondering about that little button "Mark all instances", well, it does what it say, and in your case you do not want to mark all instances.
    The Capitalization issue is, AFAICR, somewhere in the Help; and so is your singular/plural stuff. The latter one is easy solved: if you mark a word to be indexed, ID asks you in a friendly dialog how it should be included, and that defaults to the current selected phrase, but you are free to edit the text in that dialog. ID does not mark the word or phrase; it inserts an invisible marker inside the to-be-indexed word that contains all information you enter in the Add Index Entry dialog, and it uses that to determine what page number to add. (That invisible marker is visible with "Show Invisible Characters", and can be cut, pasted and deleted at will -- so to remove a water melon, find the marker, and delete it.)

  • Font list wrong in InDesign CS3

    I use Linotype FontExplorer X to organize and activate fonts and have been very happy with it. All of a sudden I'm finding that though I have the font "Times" (with roman, italic, bold and bold italic) activated, the font list in InDesign CS3 shows "Times (TI)" (which only has roman) and "Times (BM)" (which only has regular). If I launch InDesign CS2, the font list is correct, showing "Times" (with roman, italic, bold and bold italic) and not "Times (TI)" or "Times (BM)". What gives?
    I'm using system 10.4.10.

    The usual first step for this kind of error would be to delete the Adobefnt*.lst files, where the * is any number.

  • CMYK layers showing up when spot color illos placed in InDesign CS3

    When I place an Illustrator CS3 (13.0.2) illustration into InDesign CS3 (5.0.3), Preflight tells me that CMYK colors are being used, even though the imported illustration has only 2 Pantone spot colors matching those used in the InDesign document (the 2 spot colors show up in Preflight as well). I double-checked to make sure they were spot colors, not CMYK. When I go to Separations Preview, my 2 spot color show up but nothing shows on the CMYK layers. I deleted all unused color swatches in my InDesign file (and the Illustrator file), and when I delete the illustration Preflight just shows the 2 PMS spot color that I'm using in the document. I'm using Mac OS 10.5.4 on a brand-new Quad-Core Xeon, if that matters.
    I've tried saving the illustration as both AI and EPS, and using CMYK and RGB color modes. I deleted all unused color swatches from both Illustrator and InDesign. For another test, I created a fresh Illustrator file that just had a box in 1 spot color and placed it in a fresh InDesign file, and again Preflight said that CMYK was being used. Besides the usual work-around of telling my service bureau to not output the CMYK film, does anyone have any idea of how to correct this? I've encountered it several times. (BTW, my service bureau didn't know what the problem is).
    This is my first visit and post here, so if I have violated some forum etiquette, please forgive me.

    Save a PDF and place that.

  • Missing Links in InDesign CS3

    We are using InDesign CS3 and the program itself works good, the problem I'm having is all our data is located on a server and I have replaced the server with a new one, now when we open a document it has missing links and it takes forever searching for \\oldserver\pictures before popping up missing links where you then point it to \\newserver\pictures. My question is why does InDesign use the unc path and not mapped drive letters? Is there a way to fix this for future? Also is there anyway to fix previous short a fixing each and ever missing link? I see CS4 has the option to check links or not but I don't see any options for CS3. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tony

    I'm not sure what that has to do with it? when opening up a documents it tries to resolve picture links the link pointing to \\oldserver\pictures (that server is no longer running) everything has been moved to \\newserver\pictures when the document finally opens you manually fix the links to point to new server save document then it opens fine the next time. I would rather have the links point to P:\Pictures as apposed to the unc path, the I wouldn't have this issue.

  • Placing SVG in InDesign CS3

    Is it true that it is no longer possible to place SVG as an image in InDesign CS3 ? When I try to place several SVG files these are interpreted (and placed) as text files, not graphics !
    Is there an update or special filter installer to do this as before ?

    Can you tell me with which version of Indesign you managed to get that working, I've been lookin to place SVG as image files into my InDesign without any success.
    I had to make a SVG2EPS Converter to be able to do so. But it is far more heavier in terms of disk space.

  • Customised Flavor Drag and Drop in Indesign CS3

    Hello All,
    I'm implementing a to Drag & Drop from an external application (say windows Desktop) on to Indesign CS3 Document. I have implemented a Custom Flavor helper and a Data Exchange helper for my custom Flavor.
    I have registered my Custom Flavor in Constructor of My Custom Flavor
    RegisterExternalFlavor(TEXT("Portable Document Format"));
    In the Function CouldAcceptTypes, it is
    if (dataIter != nil)
    // Test for swatches in the drag
    DataExchangeResponse response;
    response = dataIter->FlavorExistsWithPriorityInAllObjects(kPDFExternalFlavor);
    bool16 valid = response.CanDo();
    if (valid)
    return DragDrop::TargetResponse(response, DragDrop::kDropWillCopy);
    return DragDrop::kWontAcceptTargetResponse;
    Now My Problem it is this variable "valid" is always False. So it is not going inside the loop. and hence I am not getting call in ProcessDragDropCommand. The Only calls which I am getting is in
    DataExchangeHandler::CreateScrapStorage() & DataExchangeHandler::GetFlavor()
    Note that I am dropping PDF only. I suppose the problem is in dropped Flavor only that it is not accepting.
    Kindly help.
    I am stuck at this point.
    ..Many Thanks

    From the Swing tutorial check out this section on [url http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/misc/dnd.html#customComp]Data Transfer With a Custom Component.
    The [url http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/misc/example-1dot4/index.html#DragPictureDemo]Drag Picture Demo has the code I think you are looking for. Specifically the PictureTransferHandler.java class.
    a) In the createTransferable() method the source component is saved
    b) In the importData() method the source and target component are compared. When they are the same you exit immediately and set a "shouldRemove" boolean.
    c) In the exportDone() method your check the action and the shouldRemove boolean before doing anything.

    No matter what quantity I set in InDesign CS3, it will only print one at a time. Doen't matter whether it's my HP 4250 LaserJet or a Xerox Phaser 8550. Also doesn't matter whether I set preferences with InDesign or the printer's preferences.
