InDesign CS3 (Windows XP) Book crashes on most options

Dell Pentium 4
Optiplex GX 620
3.4GHz
2 Gb
Windows XP
I have Adobe Creative Suite 3 (with all the latest updates)Design Premium for PCs. The above is a description of the computer I currently work on. The program is installed locally on my machine, but my files are required to reside on a network drive.
I create manuals which have several chapters and up to a total of 200+ pages for the entire book. When I pull the chapters into the book and try to create a table of contents, synchronize, or change the number of pages in a chapter, it crashes every time. I really need these features to work.
If anyone has any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated. If you need further informtion, do not hesitate to ask. I really need help with this.

Hi, Me too have the same problem, Cananyone help us?

  • Find numeric numbering list, Indesign CS3,Windows

    1. I LIKE
    a. Mango
    b. Orance
    2. Did you know
    a. yes
    b. no
In this two list I want only numeric numbering list. I wrote the javascript code like
    text_frame.paragraphs[pa].bulletsAndNumberingListType;
but it shows all the numerice and alphabetic list.
    Please Help

Thanks for the additional information, but unfortunately it still leaves me a bit confused.  We have only used InDesign CS3 and CS4 with the regular Adobe Paragraph Composer, and it works just fine except for the one font - Adobe Thai.  This font works well also except when a tone mark is needed above a punctuation mark - thats the only time we see a problem?
Can you read Thai? Your post confuses me, too. I see that no Thai fonts work correctly in CS4 without the World-Ready Composer turned on. I don't work in Thai very often - my SE Asian script expertise is concentrated in Lao, Cambodian, and Burmese - but I have some sample Thai randomly harvested from the Internet, and a collection of Thai fonts, and none of them work without the World-Ready Composer turned on. Follow the link I posted previously and read about it.
These are all generic MS fonts. I suppose that someone clever w/OpenType might be able to make a font that would render correctly in the normal Paragraph Composer, which is why I asked you to name any font that did work correctly in CS4 without the World-Ready Composer. I would like to know about it.
Even with the World-Ready Composer, I'm not willing to say that the Thai is being rendered well - I don't read Thai, so I am not suited to make judgments on good typography, but the Paragraph Composer examples above are obviously less correct than the World-Ready Composer examples.
I'm not even going to talk about CS3. Try this experiment yourself and post a screenshot.

  • InDesign CS3 - placing PDFs and the Crop To option

Hey, y'all. Still an old-schooler using InDesign CS3 (meanwhile, the person in the adjacent cubicle gets CS4, and she's not primarily in production or art...how is this fair?) Anywho, here's my dilemma...
We receive PDF ads from our clients and we ask that they stick to a page size of 8.125 x 10.75 cropped, with an additional .25" of bleed on each edge (for a total of 8.625 x 11.25). Often, the client sends us an AI file or PDF with the artboard set to the crop area. No matter how I set the "Crop To" in the Place PDF window, it never extends past the Illustrator Artboard, so I can't get the bleed.
So, apart from opening up the PDF/AI in Illustrator and changing the artboard to our bleed dimensions (8.625x11.25), is there anything I can do? I was thinking that I could change the "Crop To" settings in InDesign? Or, is there a way I can change my bleed settings within Illustrator?

Thanks for the tip, Luke. If it's PDFs, I can usually overcome it, as the other Crop To options (bleed, media, artboard, crop) can sometimes get me the full artboard, although different clients send me different stuff, so that's handy to know.
AI files...well, until I can upgrade to CS4...

  • Alt-Ctrl-C not working, InDesign CS3, Windows

    Hello,
We are currently running Adobe Design Premium CS3 and are having a hard time getting the keyboard shortcut Alt-Ctrl-C to work in InDesign.
I do have the ATI Catalyst control center application running at startup on my Windows Vista PC, however even though I have disabled hot-keys within this application Alt-Ctrl-C still fails in InDesign.
Just in case the ATI application was still intercepting the key press event I tried both changing the hotkey that ATI responds to and closing the application all together. Still InDesign refuses to accept Alt-Ctrl-C
    Any ideas?

The solution is to STOP ATI Catalyst from starting up in the startup menu when booting XP.
I had the same problem and it was ATI Catalyst that was the offender. It has a built-in shortcut key of CTRL + ALT + C that is set to open the program and it overrides the one in InDesign.
People have tried to disable the shortcut keys in Catalyst, but in all honesty, you just do not need the thing open until you actually want to use it. It is sitting there are a memory hog.
I solved the problem by going into the Start Menu of XP and taking it right out of there so it doesn't start up at all. This then leaves ID free to use the shortcut of CTRL + ALT + C.
You can also go to the START button, then RUN, then type in MSCONFIG, and select the last tab on the right: Startup. Then disable the ATI Catalyst check box. Close out of everything and do a reboot of your system.
Hope this helps those with the problem.

  • InDesign CS3 Building a book

    Hi,
A simple question (I hope!): Is it possible to build a book with no break between chapters? I am formatting a dictionary-like book and I want the beginning of each letter section/chapter to immediately follow the previous letter section/chapter. The book is over 400 pages long and so I'd really like to use the book features in ID -- if possible. If it's not possible, I want to know that and move on to plan B. Can anyone help?
    Thank you! -Sharon

    >no break between chapters
Do you mean that if a chapter ends in the middle of page 27, you want the next chapter to begin in the middle of page 27? That's not what the Book function does. It is designed to string documents together, allow page numbers to self-adjust with pagination changes, and coordinate styles. If you want to break your large file down into smaller chapters, you can still use the book function, but I don't know of a way for copy to dynamically flow between InDesign documents, which is what would have to happen if I understand your scenario correctly.

  • Automatic referencing of page/figure number on another page (Indesign CS3 Windows)

I am working on a catalog, and in the catalog, I have various references to figure numbers and other pages within text frames. The problem I have is that it is somewhat inconvenient to update these page and figure numbers when pages are added, moved, deleted, etc. It would be nice if I could put an automatic-updating reference to a page number or figure number within text without having to manual adjust it when pages change. Is this possible? If so, how can it be accomplished?
    Many thanks!

I actually emailed Jan @ DTP yesterday, and I was informed that the functionality with Word was something to be added in an upcoming update, but no real time frame was given. In other words, it is on their radar, but they have bigger fish to fry, apparently. Also, I called Virginia Systems, as they have a cross-reference solution as well, but they said this is not possible with their software, and it would most likely happen when a bigger corporation wants it and would pay for the development.
I really do not want to use InCopy, as it has a lot of unnecessary functionality for what we do, but it may come to that. I know DTP's cross-reference plug in works with InCopy, at least that's what their web site says.
I did email Teus de Jong this morning about his script. I'll post anything I get from him.

  • InDesign CS3 crashes when synchronizing a book

InDesign CS3 V5.02 repeatedly crashes (unkown software exception 0xc0000d) when synchronizing a book.
It does not matter if the book was created with CS3 or CS2.
If a book with several documents is opened with CS2, resynchronizing works as expected.
Opening the same book in CS3, it crashes about 5 seconds after invoking the command.
The problem occurs on two rather different PC's. The office PC is a Pentium D, 3,2GHz, 2GB Ram, new harddisk with a freshly installed Windows XP SP2 including all microsoft updates.
The other is my home notebook, a 4 year old Dell Latitude D800, Pentium M 1,6GHz, 1GB Ram.

After some testing I found a workaround.
If the Table of Contents is disabled in the synchronization options, ID does not longer crash.
so, the problem is no longer urgent for me.

  • InDesign CS3 (XP SP2) crashes when placing files

    Hi,
every time I try to place an image file etc. into InDesign CS3 (Windows XP, service pack 2) the "place" dialogue pops up for a split second. Then, InDesign freezes. Version Cue is not activated (when I was activated Photoshop CS3 would do the same).
I'd be more than happy if someone has a hint since naturally InDesign is pretty useless when you cannot place anything. On a sidenote though you can drag files from the explorer into CS3 without it crashing.
    Any help's greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear the trick didn't work. Another oft mentioned idea is to open a dialog in Photoshop and resize it. A third is to hit Alt + Spacebar, then M, and then an arrow key, and finally to move the mouse around and see if the dialog appears at the edge of the screen.
The 3-key keyboard shortcut only works when you are opening InDesign from the start menu or a desktop shortcut, and you have to be REALLY fast. Renaming the prefs files (while ID is closed) is more reliable, but won't give you any indication that the files are being replaced, other than you'll see the welcome screen and everything will be reset to defaults.

  • Since installing Lion Adobe InDesign CS3 crashes when I print.

I upgraded to Lion yesterday and, now that I am at work, I find that InDesign CS3 (5.0.4) crashes when I print. It doesn't hang...it just pops. My printer drivers (for our Xerox WC7775, with Fiery) no longer work for my other applications (Word, BBEdit). To get CS3 to work I installed Java Runtime through the automatic installer.
Upgrading to CS5.5 is not possible, as our whole office is on CS3.
Is there anything I can do?

Well, I strongly feel it is an Apple issue. Granted I should have done more research before I upgraded, but I (naively) thought that Lionwould be another instance of Apple improving their product, and enhancing its capabilities. In this I was wrong. But then why produce an OS that's incompatible with a large block of your user base?
    (1) OS-makers set the rules, and it is incumbent on them tobehave in a gentlewomanly/manly fashion. It seems inconceivable that it's in Apple's best interests to prevent Adobe products from working. Yet that seems to be the case here. It's like Bloom returning home in Joyce's Ulysses: it's dark and all the furniture has been moved.
And fellow-software makers should help each other out: when there's a flood in anoffice building (as there is here) everyone drops what they're doing to pitchin.
Maybe this was all a product of a *******-match between Adobe and Apple(recall the PDF support issues on the iPad), but from a users' perspective this is irrelevant. It's the argument that was made in the Financial Times recently about the fall of Netflix: Customers don't give a fig what your internal business priorities are, they want the products that they bought from you to work and be priced well.
    (2) The very kludgy work-arounds to this issue, involving deleting or hiding PPDs in the system library (specifically inOS/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/), suggest that what is causing the InDesign CS3.x to crash is minor in nature. I.e. a patch could easily bewritten.
    (3) Adobe CS3.x applications are the first generation of "Universal" apps. Okay, maybe their implementation was not ideal (as this shows) but they were written to the rules at Apple laid out for them, rules that are still in place now. As with my first point (1) it's unfair to change the rules on Adobe after the fact.
    (4) Who could expect that the step from 10.6.x 10.7.1 (the.1 presumably meaning that some initial kinks had been worked out) would be so traumatic? We are not talking here about a step from Classic or PPC. (I remember these, but because they were structural changes everyone, at some level, was prepared for the change.) This is not about getting Rosetta to work on 10.7.
    (5) We are not talking about a minor set of applications here either. Considering the long-standing use of Macs by the design community, in print, production, and photo, the support of Adobe apps should have been aconsideration for Apple. But when you look at the list of issues with this upgrade (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/905/cpsid_90508.html) it's hair-raisingly long. And note these are CS5.5 apps: the very newest software you can get from Adobe. If part of your argument is that it's incumbent on people to keep their software up-to-date, then here's a set of OS issues that are affecting users of software that was released just this spring.
    (6) Even if Adobe CS5.5 was fully supported (see (5)), it's unreasonable to expect everyone to upgrade all of their software packages each time the OS is upgraded (as opposed to completely revised: again, as in (4)10.6.x was not Classic). All of my personal software is up-to date, but I cannot say the same of my clients and my employer: they hold to older computers and software packs as long as they can because the software was so expensive.CS5.5 Design Premium is $1900. For any organization this is a big chunk of cash to doll out regularly. My employer is a non-profit: should they replace their software because I have upgraded my laptop? Or should I stop upgrading my software because they can't afford to get CS5.5 (even if it was properly supported)?
And, what if we buy a new Mac? Presumably this will come with Lion. It's clear with this that this is no longer a $4000 proposition, but a $10,000 proposition, since all the other copies of CS3.x would have to be upgraded.

  • Exporting from InDesign CS3 to PDF: Headers disappearing

    Hello all,
I have a bit of a problem I can't seem to fix. I looked all over the support forums, documentation, etc., but haven't found anything that resembles this.
I'm trying to create accessible PDFs in Indesign CS3 (Windows XP). I tagged everything in the document, lined them up correctly in the structure pane, mapped tags to styles, and exported to PDF with tags enabled.
The problem is the headers (H1, H2, etc.) don't show up in the tags or content windows in the Order Panel (Touchup Reading Order) in Acrobat Pro 8. Instead, they show up with Span tags. Alt text for my images are showing up, which leads me to believe I'm doing something wrong.
I don't get it. Am I missing a step? Is this just an oversight that CS4 solves?
Also, InDesign's Structure pane doesn't correspond correctly with Acrobat's Reading Order. It looks to me like the Reading Order is determined by the order in which objects appear in the original InDesign document. Stuff that is sent to the back ends up at the top of the Reading Order in Acrobat. This is a big issue for screen readers.
Any thoughts? I'm at a loss. I'd rather not retag all my headers in Acrobat.
    thanks
    Kurt

Even so - I don't know why - but the problem is with some fonts that the Euro doesn't show.
I always use the Euro font for the Euro symbol and never have an issue.
Even if you do manage to get the Helvetica Euro to show up in the PDF there is a chance it can drop out at the RIP stage and not appear in print - I've seen it happen far too many times.
    Euro font is your friend.

  • InDesign CS3 Server  - Enterprise Solution Options

Does InDesign CS3 Server offer an option to run several, separate instances on multiple, dedicated servers - each configured with an unique IP & port number?
Basically - has InDesign CS3 Server built-in capabilities (mode/configuration options) to distribute and handle server requests to multiple server nodes (external, physical boxes)?

There is currently no built-in support for distributing server requests across multiple server nodes.

  • Unable to Insert Footnote in Indesign CS3

We are using InDesign CS3 and that file has lot of footnotes. InDesign CS3 quits automatically when we click the option "Insert Footnote" in Indesign CS3. Not even insert one footnote on this chapter.
Insert Footnote option will work in New document, but the same option doesn't work in the actual InDesign document. I tried to converted the InDesign file as .INX format and then opened it again in InDesign CS3. Eventhough the Footnote option does not work. Please help me to solve this issue.

Does it quit when you try to insert a footnote *anywhere* in that document? Or just in the one spot where you want the footnote?
I've seen ID react badly (though not quit) to footnotes in certain places, somewhere that causes it to have pagination difficulty, like if adding a footnote would cause a paragraph to break, but that paragraph is not allowed to break.
What happens when you try to insert a footnote in a totally different place?
