InDesign CS4 (6.0.6.622) crashes on print, Mac OS X 10.6.8
I've been following some similar threads but they mostly have to do with Mac OS X Lion.
I have three users at my site with this particular issue: InDesign CS4 crashes when they need to send the job to print. The crash reports are almost identical for all three users, so I will only post the crash reports from one user's computer:

SInce I am only here for a few days, I had to ask the System Admin if there had been any upgrades (software/hardware) performed before 7/28 (the oldest date of InDesign crashes). Does the crash reporter only keep a certain number of crash reports? The most I found in one of the affected computers is 16 items (oldest being 7/28).
There is some Apple mechanism that ages out crash reports, I think it does so around 60 days. But Adobe also logs the crash reports in a second place, in ~/Library/Logs/Adobe/LogTransport/Archive/ and I do not believe those ever expire.

I think this means that the user tried to close the document and InDesign detected an internal consistency error, where some portion of InDesign was still referring to the document it was trying to close, but it could not determine why the reference count was higher than it should have been.
However, the crashes don't happen at random, but only when they try to print or export to PDF (now).
Sorry, I think I was unclear.
What I meant was that from the perspective of the crash reports, the crashes look random. I realize they are all happening from printing, but normally when you have consistent crashing in InDesign (or anything else), it will crash in the same place in the program.
I suspect you will have to engage Adobe for assistance on this. However, I fear they may just tell you to upgrade to CS5.5...

InDesign CS4 will not open. Crashes on startup - Lion 10.7.2
I just migrated all of my files from our old Quad Core G5 PPC to a new Quad Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro. I'm running Lion 10.7.2 with 16GB of RAM and plenty of hard disk space. Illustrator CS4 opens and runs fine. However, when I tried to run InDesign for the first time (and all subsequent times - about 10 now), it brings up the initial Adobe startup window, lists what is loading (plugins registering), etc., and part way into that process it crashes consistently.
Many of the files our organization needs to complete its year end reporting, donor updates, and board of directors collateral is trapped in ID and cannot be completed until this problem is rectified.
Anyone? Ideas?

Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)I have this issue also. InDesign [CS4] begins to start up, the "initializing..." label appears, then it immediately quits. Started after I had to revert back to 10.7.3 from 10.7.4 due to frequent and incessant kernel panics in 7.4. I tried uninstalling all CS4 apps (using the CS4 uninstall tool), then ran Adobe Cleaner Tool, then did a clean install of CS4 (Design Premium), including a fresh input of the serial number. All other CS4 apps open normally.
Interestingly, upon your suggestion, I created a new user account, then tried to open InDesign there. It opened normally, so at least I can use it in the "Test Account" I created. Any suggestions on how to get it to work in my account?

Adobe indesign cs4 6.0.6.622 - already installed
Trying to update and get the message above. Yet when I check my version in the about menu, it shows v6.0. In addition, the updater keeps telling me that I need to update to 6.0.6. When trying to do so, it gets almost to the end and quits.
Trying to update Indesign CS4 on a MacBook Pro running 10.7.5. The rest of the suite updated just fine.
Suggestions?Yes, that is what I meant. I know there were other users with this issue, so it would be worth you while to search here for 6.0.6 already installed.
On the other hand, let's make sure this isn't really a case of ID telling the truth. Hold down the Cmd key while choosing About InDesign from the InDesign menu. In the detailed dialog the version and build will be in the upper left. -

InDesign Cs4 Bleed/Slug not scaling with reduced print?
Maybe I'm crazy, but I feel certain that when I've printed my layouts in the past, Indesign scaled the bleed and slug along with the rest of the page when I printed at a reduced size.
Today, I can't get the bleed or the slug to output in relative scale to the document. i.e. a 20" x 32" poster with 1/8" bleeds and a 2 inch slug on top is being printed at 50%. In the Print preview box, it shows that while the page is being reduced properly to 10" x 16", the bleed is still 1/8" and the slug is still 2 inches, not 1/16" and 1" as I would have expected.
oSorry, miskeyed and hit the return key before I finished my thoughts:
Am I wrong in thinking that InDesign usually scales bleed and slug with the page? Am I mis-remembering?
If not, what is causing the odd non-scaling of bleed and slug?

If I want to print from Photoshop SC5 verse. 12.0, the program crashes. Since I have the operating system updated to 9.10 this is so. Updates can not be installed, it will display error Nr.16822 to. How do I solve this problem?

InDesign CS4 keeps crashing at startup "Starting up Service Registry"
I just downloaded and istalled InDesign CS4 trial and it keeps crashing when ever I try to launch the program. I also installed the update. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate. Any ideas of how to fix the problem? Thanks a lot.
Ok, so after reading some posts, I found a simple solution: I just changed my default pinter. Now, it runs fine. Thanks.

InDesign CS4 crash when printing .."macromedia" apparent culprit..
(Sorry if this has found its way to the wrong advice Forum: I can't seem to find a way to the appropriate InDesign CS4 "Community" to post it in!)
My Mac version of InDesign CS4 version 6.0.6 has begun crashing when attempting to print.
The Crash Log shows the particular crashed thread to always include the line:
com.macromedia.Flash Player.authplaylib 0x1c5ac2dd ExternalPlayer_Initialize + 1864739
..which is repeated a further twice, with various similar numbers just before and after "ExternalPlayer_Initialize".
I assume that this is a problem with InDesign calling "macromedia.Flash Player" instead of Adobe Flash Player, but I have no idea where or how to modify the phrase "macromedia.Flash Player" to encourage the program to run correctly.
NOTE ALSO: That the program was installed on a Mac which had been lost, and was subsequently found and returned, but in the meantime we'd bought a replacement Mac. InDesign was then UNinstalled from the originally-lost Mac, and a full previous backup of that Mac was then restored onto the new Mac so that it was a complete copy of the original (..thus abiding by usage restrictions..)
After the program was restored onto the new Mac it longer Prints.

I'll hunt for pastebin.com and put a copy of the crash log there, and will reply here when I've done that.
Meanwhile, regarding restoring, it was the entire Mac contents which were restored, not just the Applications folder (..this was a new Mac which was being "cloned" from the previous backup..) so all the attendant files, hidden here and there, would also have been restored back to their appropriate places as well!

Before installation of InDesign CS4, InDesign CS, InCopy CS3 and Bridge CS3 runs normally.
After installed, InDesign CS4 don't run, and crashes (during 'Initialising application") with this log:

Poor printing quality in InDesign CS4
Hello,
In InDesign CS4, I've made a single-page print (page coverd with one photo).
This photo is a high-resolution image (300 ppi) and is linked with the document. (checked with preflight).
The print is made on a Xerox Phaser 7760. The result isn't sharp at all. I've printes the same picture started in PhotoShop with a fine result and a print from an HiRes-pdf of the same page. The result was ok as well. The page and the picture weren't colormanaged. I kept the outputprofile, linked at the original file (US Web coated). The files were printedd on a heavy card stock (uncoated). Any idea what went wrong?Could be a couple of things.
You say the image is 300 ppi. At what size? The number that counts is effective resolution, or the resolution at the scaled dimensions, the ones you use to print. You 'll find effective ppi listed in the info or links panels.
Second, the default sending for image data when printing from InDesign is "optimized supbsampling" which is usually not that good. Chnage to "all" and see if that helps. -
InDesign CS4: File names change to string of numbers
Occasionally, one of our users will save an InDesign CS4 file, only to have the file name change. For example, a file originally named "#kwn25501.bcbsNM.indd" was saved as "#kwn25501.bc157-1223857848."
If the user is not aware that this has happened, things can go horribly, terribly wrong in our production environment. The "numbered" file may be missing key elements, or be somehow be corrupt in some fashion. In one case, this led us to having to reprint a job because the "numbered" file was missing a photo; somehow, that file was used (and perhaps renamed after the fact) to create the final output.
We use Macs running InDesign CS4 6.0.5. Some of our Macs are running Tiger 10.4.11, while others are running Leopard 10.5.8. The problem seems to related to the Leopard machines, although that is not 100 percent certain at this point. All of these Macs are bound to Active Directory and save files to a Windows 2003 server. I know Adobe recommends against working on files over a network, but perhaps there is an explanation for this file renaming aside from network issues.
Any light that can be shed on this issue will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Kevin StaufferCheck to see if maybe your original filename is the problem.
You may need that particular name for a workflow reason, but some of the symbols in the middle of your filename are generally not a good idea. Especially working off of a server, file names should be ONLY alpha-numeric characters, no symbols, no periods (except for the file type) and only underscores or dashes to separate words, no spaces.
The reason is some of those symbols get picked up as machine language and all sorts of bad can happen as a result.

How to convert InDesign CS4 doc to MS Word?
As a graphic designer, I always design brand stationery elements in InDesign CS4. Often a two colour pantone printing job for my customer to match envelopes and cards, etc.
Now I've got a young engineering customer who doesn't want hard copies. He wants a template(?) for his letterhead and contracts to be able to email. He uses MS Word. How best do I take an InDesign design and convert it to Word? (I hate the thought!)
I offered a PDF file he could print, but he can't use that on the road.
My design for him uses 2 Pantone colours; uses two fonts he doesn't have; and a tiff graphic as a tint in the background that bleeds to the edge.
Anyone done this before?
Will it look the same as my graphic?
Thanks for your advice! :-)One of the major problems with Microsoft Office products is their inability to allow import/placement of either EPS (properly - for screen display at all or for printing to non-PostScript devices) or PDF (simply not supported).
When faced with the issue of please prepare us some letterhead or provide us with a letterhead template (they just want the logo and the other material), my approach has been to do the design in InDesign and export PDF. The Word user creates their document on a blank page (leaving room for the stationery's logo, footer, etc.) and when done, saves as a PDF file. In Acrobat, they then use the Background or Watermark feature to add the stationery PDF to whatever pages of the document need that content. Foolproof and maintains the full graphic quality of the stationery as produced in InDesign, including if so desired, spot colors.

InDesign CS4 Crashing on Mac OS 10.6.7
After my G5 recently went down, I starting using the iMac with Snow Leopard for client jobs. Today I started working in InDesign CS4 but found that I could not get far before it would crash. I tried deleting preferences, then tried eliminating fonts, then tried rebooting and running Permissions. I've been on the internet trying to find the answer. Checked the Adobe Forums. Even consulted Adobe's Help Console, but the guy pointed me back to the forums.
Does anyone know if there is a solution to this crashing apart from having to upgrade to CS5? I don't use InDesign as much as I used to since I primarily work on websites now. I would prefer not to have to upgrade.

Indesign CS4 Crashes When Importing Another Indesign CS4 File
Help! Every time I try to import an Indesign file into another Indesign file, my Indesign crashes. Also happens when I try to open an existing Indesign file that has files already imported into it. This is a problem because I have existing files I need to work on that I cannot open now!
I'm running CS4 on a new iMac running Lion 10.7.3. Everything is updated and current. My problem started when I transferred all my files via firewire from my previous iMac running 10.6. However, another iMac in the office running exactly the same thing is NOT having this same problem. So it's definitely something with my Mac, but I can't figure out what.
I have tried restoring the Indesign preferences by holding down all the Control, Shift, Option & Command keys. I have also re-installed Indesign CS4 from the original CD.
Ideas? Thanks!In case anyone comes across this problem, I think I've found a solution. Seems that Extensis Suitcase Fusion 2 was causing the problem. Extensis says Fusion 2 is not compatible with Lion. However, when I upgraded to Suitcase Fusion 3, I was still have the problem, though not as often. After contacting Extensis again, they told me:
This is a known issue with Suitcase Fusion 3. I can tell you a workaround and I have passed your information onto the developers so you're notified about a fix.
Here's the workaround: You need to uncheck activate fonts in embedded objects in your Suitcase Fusion 3 InDesign preferences. Here's how you do that:
1) Open InDesign by itself (no documents)
2) Go to the “Type” menu
3) Go down to “Suitcase Fusion 3” (it should show up at the bottom of the Type menu)
4) Choose “Suitcase Fusion 3 Auto-Activation Preferences…”
5) Uncheck Activate fonts in embedded objects
6) Load your document.

Indesign CS4 keeps crashing on Launch
My copy of CS4 Indesign keeps crashing.
It gets to the window where is shows the recent documents and then crashes everytime.
I have deleted the preferences and the version folder and even re-installed the app from the master dvd but it still crashes on launch.
It was working ok earlier today, which is why I cant understand the problem.
All the other CS4 apps work fine - it's just Indesign.
Im running Mac OS X 10.5.7.
