InDesign CS4 - baseline grid

Hello
I am working on someone else's INDD document. How do you reset the baseline grid to original settings. The previous user made it have bigger squares.
Thanks in advance.

Doo you mena the documetn grid? That has squares, the basline grid is just horizontal lines.
Both are set in the preferences under  Grids.

  • Cannot add ruler guides in InDesign CS4. What am I doing wrong?

I'm trying out InDesign CS4 on a trial basis. I have the Web Design CS3 suite and have no problem making ruler guides by clicking and dragging from a ruler. I'm wondering if there is a conflict between CS3 and CS4 products. I can't select the Selection or Direct Selection Tools by clicking on them. They do become active, however, if I use the keyboard shortcuts (V) or (A).  According to the 1-on-1 tutorial, my Selection Tool cursor should change from black to white when the guide snaps to an existing margin. My cursor turns white as soon as a click on the ruler. When I drag, nothing happens. When I release the mouse button, the cursor turns black again. With the Direct Selection Tool, the cursor remains white throughout the entire attempt. Nothing happens in either situation. This is a simple, getting started doc. There is only one layer, I'm in Normal view, and I have created margins and columns that are visible. I can select Baseline and Document grids and they work. Is this a bug or am I missing something?
P.S. I've tried to attach the InDesign file (840 kb), but got the message, "The content type of this attachment is not allowed." Sheesh!

You were right in your original assessment; it was a corrupt installation. There were several other things not functioning as designed. I just came upon the guides problem first. BTW, I found that if I expanded the document to where it covered the entire screen, the guides were visible. Unfortunately, the tool box and menus are covered, so that was a bit inconvenient. Just wanted to say thanks and tip my hat to you and the others who responded by offering help.
One last thing, when I posted my original posting, I tried to attach the InDesign doc file I was working on and got a pop-up window saying that these type of files are not allowed. Am I to understand that you can't post InDesign files on the Adobe forum?

  • Placing MS Word to InDesign CS4

    Products:
    Windows 7
    InDesign CS4 x64
    Word 2007
    Problem:
Hyphenation and Align to Baseline Grid commands do not remain set if the ID document is saved, closed, and re-opened.
    Description:
I've placed a Word doc into an InDesign doc with reasonable trouble, but have now encountered something that I have been unable to find a solution to fix. I will close the Word doc, place it into InDesign, make some changes to the formatting of the text, save changes, close the InDesign doc, re-open the InDesign doc, and two commands in particular did not keep during the save: removing the hyphenation toggle and align with baseline grid.
The hyphenation toggle and align to baseline grid are located in the paragraph module. I have unchecked the hyphenate command, selected align to grid, saved the doc, but they do not keep.
How can I get these two commands to remain set so that I do not have to reset them each time I open the ID document?
    Thanks

You seem to have this solved, but in case you don't know, there is a hierarchy to settings and how they apply. With something selected, the settings apply only to the selection. In a document with nothing selected, new settings become the default for the document, but don't affect existing content unless you change it. With no documents open, new settings become application defaults for new work, but don't affect existing documents.

  • Why is my InDesign CS4 crashing with serious error detected?

    Hi.
    Can anyone help please?
I am also having this problem. I have a MAC 10.6.8 and am trying to use indesign CS4, but I keep crashing due to a serious error being detected.
I have no idea what this could be.
The action that seems to trigger it is if I try to place multiple images in to a grid format by holding down cmd+shift, however I have also recently installed new fonts in my public library from dafont.
Here is the link to my pastebin crash report > Crash Report - MSADMIN - Pastebin.com
Any help would be so appreciated!
    Thank you in advance.

One of the images causes an error during place.
The error is not handled correctly before InDesign continues with the next place.
At that point a security mechanism steps in and invokes the "protective shutdown".
Fonts are probably not involved, unless your images are actually placed InDesign files, EPS or alike.
You can try to place the images individually, one of them should bring up an error dialog.

  • Using baseline grid and "space after" for paragraph formatting

I'm using InDesign CC on a MacBook Pro Retina. I'm designing a document and want to use a baseline grid to align text. I also want to use the "space after" option in defining a paragraph style. I'm using 10 point type on 15 point leading. The "space after" is defined as 7.5 points.
If I try apply both the baseline grid alignment and the "space after" specification, I essentially lose my defined 7.5 pt "space after" to a much larger space because the first line of the next paragraph sinks to the baseline grid line below it. I end up essentially with 22.5 pt instead of 7.5 pt.
Are these two functions incompatible or is there a way around this that I don't know about?
    Thanks for any advice.

There's no way around it. Best is to calculate your various leading,
space before, and space after values to make sure everything falls on a
baseline. That way you avoid having to rely on "Align to baseline." You
may also want to turn on "skip by leading" in Preferences>Composition if
you've got graphics with text wrap in them.

  • Baseline grid? How do you make type line up across facing pages?

I'm laying out a book in Pages, and I have it set up as 12.5-point type on 15-point line spacing, exactly. The margin at the top and bottom of both pages is 0.9 inches. There is a header and a footer set on each page at 0.4 inches. But occasionally, one page will have 32 lines of body type on it, and the facing page will have 31 lines. No change in type size or leading on either page.
When I saw in the Pages user manual that you could specify the line spacing "exactly," I thought that was the solution. But still, occasionally, I will get two facing pages do not line up exactly, one still has 32 lines and the other 31.
I thought, hmm, what if I change the leading to 14.9-point on the 31-line page just to see what happens. Weirdly enough, the spacing does tighten up, way more than enough to fit that 32nd line onto the page, but the type does not flow back in from the next page. It just leaves a bigger space there than before, and still 31 lines. I'm stumped.
Is there any kind of baseline grid feature in Pages that might cure this? I didn't see anything like that in the user manual, but could there be some kind of equivalent, or a workaround? (Well, besides using Quark or InDesign?) It would look so much better if it didn't have the occasional blank line at the bottom of a page.
    Thanks for any advice.

Thanks much, Walt and Peter, you were both right. I rethought my whole document layout, starting with the idea that I would put every line of 12-point body type on a 14-point slug. So I made the page length a multiple of 14-point lines. I also had some 16-point chapter titles that I formatted to be on 28-point slugs. I was not consistent enough in my chapter headline formatting before. And I tweaked my top and bottom margins so the length of the type area on the page would accommodate 37 lines of type. Once I had this setup, I was confident it would work. It did. For a while. Then I ran into a page that had only 36 lines, not 37. Hmmm. Yes, that's where unchecking the "prevent widow and orphan lines" box paid off. It allowed a line to flow back from the next page and fill in the 37th slug.
It doesn't have the elegance of setting up a baseline grid and locking the type to it, but it works. Thanks again for your assistance, guys.

  • Placing MS Word inline images onto the Baseline Grid

    Products:
    InDesign CC
    MS Word 2013
    Hi everyone.
I'm placing a MS Word docx (default style formatting, images pasted inline with the text, each on a separate line) into an InDesign document with a baseline grid.
The document places without any difficulty, except that the images are piled on top of each other. I can see tht the image is being placed on its own line on the baseline grid, so technically it's being positioned properly, but I need the text to Jump Object or  Wrap Around Bounding Box. When I change any image from No Text Wrap to one of the aforementioned, nothing happens. The bottom portion of the image remains inserted and aligned to the baseline grid.
How do I get the text to Jump Object or Wrap Around Bounding Box when using the baseline grid?
    Thanks

Ah, I seem to have found a solution to the problem. Not sure if it is the best or most efficient, but it seems to work:
    1. Create new paragraph style.
    2. Set Basic Character Format Leading to Auto.
Then, rather than select the image as I was doing, position the cursor in the respective line hosting the inline image, and apply the new paragraph style.
That caused the text to have the Jump Object appearance.

  • View the baseline grid

The keyboard shortcut for viewing the baseline grid does not work in the CS5 Mac version. I can see the baseline grid by going through the menus but it would be so convenient just to press some keys as I am supposed to be able to. This must be a bug. I can view the document grid easily enought, either by going through menus or by using the keyboard shortcut (command + ').

When I type an apostrophe I do get an apostrophe. I have tried changing my language and keyboard settings to American - that really ought to work with InDesign but it still doesn't work. As I said, I can view the document grid easily enough. The only difference with the baseline grid is that you have to hold down the alt key as well. Why that should disrupt everything I don't know.

  • Can't Place a specific Word 2010 docx into InDesign CS4

I'm trying to use the Place command to bring the text from a specific Word 2010 docx into InDesign CS4.
I've successfully brought in several Word 2010 documents (docx extention) to InDesign CS4 documents using the place command.
I have one specific 30 page document (which is no loarger than others which have been successful), and when I use the place command with this file, nothing happens (and no text gets loaded onto the cursor for placement.
I've tried re-saving the word doc, even pasted its contents into a new Word doc and still can't get the Place command to work.
THere's nothing particularly unique about the file - doesn't have any odd embedded content, just a 30 page text document writtin in word.
Any ideas what could be going wrong or how to fix it?
I've tried restarting both Word and InDesign without any change (and the rest of my word files can be Placed without problem, so I imagine it's something specific to that file.
NOTE - re-saving in RTF format lets the Place command work but leaves a bunch of empty squares/boxes (not sure if these were for tabs or empty spaces or what really??)
Can work around this for now, but would like to know how to get the place command working with decent size Word Docs( docx for word 2010 if that matters).
    Thanks for any help.

It turned out that for at least one particular document the OP had used some blank paragraphs as spacers at the start of the text, and that the style assigned to the second paragraph used a combination of left and right paragraph indents that was more than the width of the document page, sending the entire document (except for the empty first paragraph) into overset. I can't say for sure, but I think the Word styles might have been mapped to ID styles because I found no trace of the indents in the Word file itself, only in the ID document, and I had no trouble placing that Word file in my own ID test document. I did have some trouble placing another .docx file supplied by the OP in CS4, but not in later versions, and conversion to .doc solved that problem.

  • Button issue in InDesign CS4

I need to add text using interactive -->  button option in InDesign CS4. This particular text has to appear when I  mouse the text in PDF after generating from InDesign CS4. I don't want  to add those text in PDF itself.
Indesign CS3 has  button options to add text but InDesign CS4 does have that option to add  text. Please guide me how to add text using Button in ID CS4.
What  I did was: I have created a button and add text using button option and  save it. When exporting PDF from ID CS3, I have enabled the option  Interactive elements. After generating PDF from ID CS3 I have mouse over  the text, whatever text I was inserted in button it appeared in PDF  well.
But this option is not available in InDesign CS4. I hope you understand it clear now.
I  have taken the screenshot below from InDesign CS3 and attached the same  for your reference. This option does have in InDesign CS4. Please help  me out in this regard.

I've answered this in the other thread where you asked the question.

  • Urgent - help with Text direction in InDesign CS4

    Hello,
I use InDesign CS4 on Windows 7. It's a standard version (without options for right-to-left languages).
Whenever I make a new text frame, it seems to have a right-to-left "logic" of the text. The text types left to right, but the period in the end would go all the way right.
It also mixes up tabs. It looks like this:
    Instead of:
Usually I get around it by pasting another correctly formatted text-frame or text, and it works.
Now I'm trying to create a new document with master frame (in order to be able to easily change the layout successively of a many-paged document), where I need to insert existing (formatted) text. But this text take this "right to left logic", whether I past the text, or even a whole text frame.
I could find nothing in the character/paragraph options to get rid of this.
I would greatly appreciate if you could help me.
    with respect,
    Jerusalem Nun.

This behaviour is normal. Changing the default property of any style, when no document is open, changes the style for every new document, but not for existing document.
Take a look what is your basic style where all other styles are build up on it, in your case, go to the paragraph style and look what is the basic style which was used.
If the default style was used (it is the one in brackets), you have always a problem. You should not use it in any case.
Because you don't have a ME version of InDesign you can't change direction directly, but you can create a new document with the default settings and the same paragraph (and character, table and cell styles) in a new document without RTL styles. Save this document, no content is required.
Go to the 'infected' document, open the paragraph style panel and in the panel menu take "Load all text styles", select the new document and overwrite with the incoming styles.
If necessary you might repeat it with the Table, Cell, Character and Object Styles, as all of them have some kind of direction settings.
I don't know how good your styles were created, you have to adjust your document. And I would strongly recommend—I repeat—I strongly recommend to work always with styles.

  • What is the best way to work with Word documents in The InDesign CS4???

I work in Microsoft Word 2007 and all my documents have *.doc format.
What is the best way to work with Word documents in InDesign CS4???
David Blatner says to avoid copying and pasting text from Word instead of placing it (Ctrl+D).
How about pasting RTF or Text Document???
I want to make book's layout in ID CS4 and its main feature is that there is the left page with text and the right - with graphics.
So, as I understand to place the text on each page I must create for example 70 Word documents and place each item on 70 left pages???
It loks like wasting time. I sthere another way of making such layout???  What kind????

It's best to place any text.
You can have all of your text in one file and use auto-flow to add threaded text frames and pages as required (Hold down the Shift key when you click the loaded text cursor), but it's a little non-standard to have the thread only on one side of the spread from the auto-flow perspective, so you'll have to set up properly.
This is one case where a master text frame will work to your advantage. On your master page spread, add a text frame to the left page, but not to the right (or at least not threaded to one on the right -- for some other project you might actually want two independent text threads). Hold the loaded cursor over a frame on the left side of a document page and auto-flow. ID will add new spreads as necessary, but only put the text on the left side.

  • Minimized files make it difficult to open other files in InDesign CS4

When I minimize a file I 'm working on to the bottom of the screen in InDesign CS4 and try to open another file, the file I'm trying to open minimizes to the bottom also. It took many tries and a lot of frustration to realize I have to drag the minimized tab up to the left corner and drag the corners out to work on it. I get many interruptions during the day, and often like to minimize one project while I need to take care of a quick fix on another project. Is there a setting I'm missing that will correct this? I have not encountered this in previous versions of InDesign.

    Well...what do you know?
All I can do is confirm the behavior. The new file isn't minimized but it is at the bottom of the screen.
You might want to file a bug report.

I've never seen it since I prefer the tabs.
