InDesign CS4: change position of single column guides using numerical input?

We can change the position of single column guides to obtain unequal columns. We simply drag the guides. But is it possible to do this more precisely, hence using a numerical input field?
To obtain the same result, I currently create a smart guide and then align the column guide with the smart guide. This is OK, but an input field for the column guide would be quicker.
If there is currently no better way than mine, then understand this "numerical input field for column guides" as suggestion please.

How to change the width of column guide itself?

i'm doing a trifold brochure and set it up that way in layout. the space between the column guides (represented by the thin purple lines) is too narrow. i want to make it wider. i thought that that space was the "gutter" but when i change the gutter from the default to .25" nothing changes in the page. i would expect the thin purple lines to more further apart. am i adjusting the wrong thing or what? thank you!

The guides themselves don't really do anything. They are simply visual cues that you as the designer can use or ignore. To get the actual column gutters to change you need to go into "text frame options". Use Command-B (Mac) or Control-B (PC) or right click to access contextual menus and choose text frame options from a list. Once the dialog pops up, you can change the gutters. If you want the actual gutters and the guides to match, you'll also have to edit the guides. You can do that under the layout menu, "margins and guides."

Change category axis of column chart using Combobox in flex

I am trying to change the data of a column chart using a
combo box. I am using XML for data.
What I am planing to do is.. the combo box will get "Month"
say January, feb etc and same will reflect on the X axis and the
data related to only the selected month should be shown. Say if
January is selected, the x axis should show "January" and the chart
should show only data related to January.

Hi Chris,
That is a Category graph (2-D Line).
A Scatter Plot will allow you to change the Scale and Steps on the X axis.
Click on the Chart (Graph) and Format Panel > Axis
To get a Connection Line or a Trendline on the Scatter Plot, Format Panel > Series
For a Scatter Plot, put your X and Y data in Header Columns (or Header Rows).

Page margin different from column guides

i have an indb which is comprised of 80 single page files that i am updating from last year, and am resizing each one, using layout adjustment. each page opens with this artifact on the master page files: the page margins are correctly set at .25" left and right, but the column guides show them shifted over maybe an eighth of an inch. if i go into margins and columns and change the right margin up or down, and then change it back, the column guide snaps back to match up with the page guide at .25". do you know why this is happening? i would rather not do it for every single page. i have synchronized the book with the correct master page settings and it doesnt change the problem.

That seemed pretty odd to me, but I was able to reproduce it (or something similar) by unlocking the column guides and dragging a guide away from the margin and then adjusting the margins.
It might also be corrupt prefs, though, so have a look at Replace Your Preferences

Indesign CS4 crashing on quit

This has been happening for a while now. Almost every single time I am done with Indesign and close it, I get a send error report window and when I check the details it says UNKNOWN for the error code. This is true for the PC at work, and at home.
Both have XP with SP3, and Indesign CS4 with the latest update. It used to occur before the updates too.
Has this been solved?
If I open Indesign and shut it without opening a file it is OK. But if I have it running for a certain amount of time with a file open, then when I close the file and exit out of indesign it almost always happens.

I haven't seen any other reports like this, and it doesn't happen to me with SP2. I'm inclined to think it's something particular to your configuration.
The first thing I would try is replacing the preference files. Corrupt prefs can cause all sorts of weirdness, and my sense from my own system, where I've replaced them a couple of times, is that CS4 is more prone to preference problems than earlier versions.
It might also be caused by some third-party plugin, or even another program you have running in the background. Do you have, for example, a font manager running? Even a bad font might cause this.

InDesign CS4 launches with missing workspaces, keyboard shortcut sets, etc

I'm starting this as a new topic to focus on the cases where InDesign CS4 users are able to launch and use the product, but are missing resources such as the following types of presets: Workspaces, Keyboard Shortcut Sets, and Swatch Libraries.
All reports of this issue appear to be related to user permissions. For these resources to to be accessed you must be running InDesign CS4 with an account that has read/write access to the following folder, including it's subfolders and all of their content:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS4\Presets
If you have a setup where you are running into problems getting resources from this folder to appear in InDesign CS4, and you believe your user account has read/write permissions to all of it's contents, please let me know as I'd like to work with you to find a solution.

The complete fix from start to finish for my problem (InDesign CS4 launching without toolbars or keyboard shortcuts when logged on without Administrator priviliges) is below. It's actually quite simple once you know how... The problem is just getting all of the information in the same place. Hopefully it will help others having the same problem.
1.        Install CS4 from the 2 installation CDs. Allow a couple of hours from start to finish.
2.        Log on with an Administrator account:
a.        Navigate to “C:\Program Files\Adobe\”.
b.        Right-click on the folder named “Adobe InDesign CS4”
c.        Click Properties
d.        Click on the Security tab
e.        Change permissions for Users to Full Control
f.         Click on the Advanced button and ensure that there is a check in both of the boxes (inherit and replace permissions).
g.        Click Apply to reflow the permissions
h.        Click OK twice.
3.        Navigate to the following locations and rename each of the EN_UK folders to EN_US:
a.        C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS4\Presets\InDesign Workspaces\
b.        C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS4\Presets\Page Sizes\
c.        C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS4\Presets\Start Page\
d.        C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS4\Presets\InDesign Shortcut Sets\
4.        With a user account, launch Adobe InDesign CS4 and immediately hold down Shift, Control and Alt together. Click Yes to delete the InDesign Preference files.

Problems with Russian, Ukrainian etc. characters in Polish InDesign CS4

I'm a new user of InDesign CS4 (Polish version). Mostly i'm using Garamond Pro for setting text -- there is no Russian characters. Who know which one font has Russian, Ukrinian, Bulgarian Oldslavic etc. characters?

If you're using Windows, there is an incredibly useful utility Babelmap that has the tool you need: "List all the fonts installed on my system that support the text I have on my clipboard". I used to use it all the time.
I very much doubt that you have many fonts already installed on your system that support Old Slavic, unless you've installed them yourself. Bulgarian coverage is better, but still not common. If you'd like I can post some links to the pages where links to the type foundries working in these scripts are often posted. If you're not already familiar with it, Paratype is probably going to be your first stop.

InDesign - CS4 Hyperlink Help

I have gotten myself lost and am in need of some help.
I have created a list of products on a page, all by titles - no images, only text, and each of these items should have an address/link on the internet, but I've gotten lost. How do I select one of the titles and make it a link to that page on the internet? I have selected one of the titles and then gone to Text > Hyperlinks & Crossreferences and my options are:
New Hyperlink...
New Hyperlink from URL
Insert Cross References...
When I select New Hyperlink, I will put the web address in the bar and say "OK", but nothing shows on the screen or no link is created. When I save it or make it into a PDF, still nothing happens.
When I select New Hyperlink from URL, nothing happens to the text and no second window opens.
How can I create a web link in InDesign CS4?

Or, is it easier using Illustrator CS4? I just need to make a pdf with a list of products and a link to each on the web.

First thing to do is check if you really added a hyperlink. If so, it should appear in the Hyperlink panel. Select it; the left arrow on the bottom selects the hyperlink in your document. The right arrow opens the link in your default browser.
Second: check if you have "Include Hyperlinks" in your PDF Export settings.

Adobe programmers are able to create industry-standard document formats (PostScript, PDF, Type 1 Fonts) and to create world class software ("to photoshop" is an entry in most dictionaries by now) but they outsourced this editor to some obscure team. Cannot add ruler guides in InDesign CS4. What am I doing wrong?

I'm trying out InDesign CS4 on a trial basis. I have the Web Design CS3 suite and have no problem making ruler guides by clicking and dragging from a ruler. I'm wondering if there is a conflict between CS3 and CS4 products. I can't select the Selection or Direct Selection Tools by clicking on them. They do become active, however, if I use the keyboard shortcuts (V) or (A). According to the 1-on-1 tutorial, my Selection Tool cursor should change from black to white when the guide snaps to an existing margin. My cursor turns white as soon as a click on the ruler. When I drag, nothing happens. When I release the mouse button, the cursor turns black again. With the Direct Selection Tool, the cursor remains white throughout the entire attempt. Nothing happens in either situation. This is a simple, getting started doc. There is only one layer, I'm in Normal view, and I have created margins and columns that are visible. I can select Baseline and Document grids and they work. Is this a bug or am I missing something?
P.S. I've tried to attach the InDesign file (840 kb), but got the message, "The content type of this attachment is not allowed." Sheesh!

You were right in your original assessment; it was a corrupt installation. There were several other things not functioning as designed. I just came upon the guides problem first. BTW, I found that if I expanded the document to where it covered the entire screen, the guides were visible. Unfortunately, the tool box and menus are covered, so that was a bit inconvenient. Just wanted to say thanks and tip my hat to you and the others who responded by offering help.
One last thing, when I posted my original posting, I tried to attach the InDesign doc file I was working on and got a pop-up window saying that these type of files are not allowed. Am I to understand that you can't post InDesign files on the Adobe forum?

Remember document position in Indesign CS4

How can I make Indesign CS4 remember the document position and percentage of a document as in CS3.

I do a lot of copy/paste from Word, Excel and Mail. To do so it is easy to put the delivered document next to my Indesign document.
Now I have to change back the position of the Indesign document everytime I open it.

InDesign CS4: File names change to string of numbers

Occasionally, one of our users will save an InDesign CS4 file, only to have the file name change. For example, a file originally named "#kwn25501.bcbsNM.indd" was saved as "#kwn25501.bc157-1223857848."
If the user is not aware that this has happened, things can go horribly, terribly wrong in our production environment. The "numbered" file may be missing key elements, or be somehow be corrupt in some fashion. In one case, this led us to having to reprint a job because the "numbered" file was missing a photo; somehow, that file was used (and perhaps renamed after the fact) to create the final output.
We use Macs running InDesign CS4 6.0.5. Some of our Macs are running Tiger 10.4.11, while others are running Leopard 10.5.8. The problem seems to related to the Leopard machines, although that is not 100 percent certain at this point. All of these Macs are bound to Active Directory and save files to a Windows 2003 server. I know Adobe recommends against working on files over a network, but perhaps there is an explanation for this file renaming aside from network issues.
Any light that can be shed on this issue will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Check to see if maybe your original filename is the problem.
You may need that particular name for a workflow reason, but some of the symbols in the middle of your filename are generally not a good idea. Especially working off of a server, file names should be ONLY alpha-numeric characters, no symbols, no periods (except for the file type) and only underscores or dashes to separate words, no spaces.
The reason is some of those symbols get picked up as machine language and all sorts of bad can happen as a result.

Change position of Columns in a JTable

Hello together!
I have the follow problem:
I have a JTable and want to change the position of the Columns.
I tryed to remove and add the columns but that doesn't really work, either I have no columns or I have all twice.
If there is any better method to change the position pls let me know, if not pls give me a hint to get it working with deleting and adding.
