InDesign CS4 - Crashed and lost my morning's work !!!

I had the kind if event this morning which hasn't happened to me since the early 1990's. I lost a morning's work.
I recently got a new PowerMac and installed a brand new copy of Adobe Creative Studio CS4.
This morning, I opened a document in InDesign CS4 and worked for about 2+ hours on it, making design changes and text amends. As a design pro for almost 20 years I religiously click save after every change.
The document was a proposal for a sizable project which we were trying to get done by the deadline of midday.
Then InDesign crashed - I do not know the cause, the only unusual thing around that time was that the wireless router was getting rebooted.
When I restarted InDesign it offered me some options about salvaging changes in the document. I wasn't too bothered becaseu - as I said - I religiously click save after every change so crashes are unlikely to affect me.
But when I reopened the document - it was in it's original state from first thing this morning!
How is this possible?
All I can imagine is that there is a bug related to the 'infinite' undo. Why else would a document go back 60 or more saves?
Fortunately, the last thing I had done was to create a PDF so we were able to make edits to that and send the doc by midday - but it was close!
Is it the case, with CS4, that I now have to return to what we used to do back in the early 1990's - instead of simply save a doc every few minutes, make a copy?!
Please can someone explain this to me or offer a suggestion. It nearly cost me an entire project!
Phil

This is highly unusual. InDesign continuously saves a backup on its own. It is not like autosave in QXP. You do something... it saves a backup. There isn't an autosave setting that you directly fiddle with.
Look at your Preferences > File Handling > Document Recovery Data to find the location where it saves a backup copy.
I think it may be possible that you have some OS issues like maybe permissions problems. Since you describe a new machine and a new install; maybe it was not well-oiled and broken in yet.
My chicken-soup approach is to run Disk Utilities > Repair Permissions. It couldn't hurt to try that. You weren't running the file at distance across a network, were you? While some have no problem with that; many will experience problems. I always strive to work on the local disk volume.
There is no reason to try to click on the .idlk file. That so-called Lock file is a network WebDav gadget that doesn't allow someone else to open the file you are working on. It is not an InDesign file. It is not your backup file, either.

  • Indesign CS4 Crashes When Printing to PDF

    Hi all,
I've been having an issue lately with InDesign CS4 crashing every time I print to PDF. I've never had the issue before, but now it seems to happen constantly. I am running Windows 7, and when I print to PDF, my dialog box gets to "DOWNLOADING PROCSET" and then it just freezes and goes unresponsive. If I end InDesign through Task Manager, and reopen to try and print again, the same issue happens. If I completely restart my computer, reopen InDesign, and then print, it will work fine, for a while. This is happening with multiple documents. I am trying to avoid reinstalling, but may have to try that next.
When InDesign gets in its freezing spree, I've quit and reopened InDesign, then printed to a Postcript and Distilled with no issues, but the PDF printing still does not work.
    Any ideas?

    Hi
New to this forum, but I too have had a problem with printing a PDF from InDesing. what I have found is when my dialog box gets to "DOWNLOADING PROCSET" and it just freezes, whats actually happening is the 'SAVE AS' dialogue box has appeared, but is not the active window. When I ALT+TAB through my open applications, in Windows 7 it changes your screen to 'preview' the programs you flick through, and I find it there, attached to outlook, or the internet. Upon further investigation, it appears to attach itself to which ever program I click, after the initial "DOWNLOADING PROCSET" freezing.
So now when I PDF from InDesign and it freezes at this point, I click the Desktop icon (in windows 7 its the rectangle in the bottom right corner) and it seems to 'place' the 'SAVE AS' dialogue box here, where I can actually select it and click SAVE.
    Hope this helps?

  • Indesign CS4 Crashing with one doc only

My Indesign CS4 crashes with only one document (my most valuable document, of course). It does not crash with other small docs.
The exact problem occurs on two Intel Macs (Mac Pro 6gb of Ram and MacBook Pro with 2gb of Ram): The doc opens for about 5 seconds then the ball starts spinning and I need to force quit.
I did change fonts for the document a few days before the problem began, so if anyone has suggestions how to diagnose corrupt fonts, please let me know.
If anyone has suggestions on how to recover my document, please guess away.
    Many Thanks.

I finally was able to recover a backup copy that was 2 days old. I am happy with this as I thought I was having to go back 2 weeks.
I recovered it by continuously opening and force quitting every backup I had over and over, then attempting a save-as.
One thing I noticed is that Indesign automatically opens up previously opened documents even if it crashed. This creates a loop that was tricky to work around as Indesign would even with a good doc opened. It would open the corrupt doc at the same time causing a crash.
My lesson is to rename the document backup every day (not use the same name), and back up on a secondary drive. Thus, if this happens again the worst thing that will happen is that I lose only 1 days of work.

  • InDesign CS4 crashes generating a TOC

I have read about other users problems with TOC's, but none of their solutions seems to be any help. My InDesign CS4 crashes either when I try to generate the TOC or when I select a specific paragraph style setting up the TOC. Unlike the users of later versions I get no message when the program crashes - it just happens.
I am working on a book with 40 files (chapters) and inserting index codes and generating index is no problem. I have 12 GB RAM. Please help me.
    Leif

Now I have performed your suggestions. I split one of the three documents in half and tried to open another document in the book - and the program crashed. I continued to spilt the halves, but since either half still caused a crash, i suspected that neither the text nor the pictures were the problem. I selected one of the halves and removed all text, all pictures, all master objects, but even if I now worked with two blank pages, the program still crashed!!
Then I studied the panels and removed all unused object formats, paragraph formats, character formats etc. At last I noticed that the index panel still contained a reference - even if all text (and with that also all index references (entries)) was removed.
Trying to open this reference to see what it contained, the program crashed even if I had only the document in question open!! I removed the index reference - and the program did not crash any more!!!
When I removed this particular reference in the two other documents, the document did not crash any more!!! And of course I removed it from all documents and now I can open all my 45 documents in the book without problems.
I suppose that the reason why this index reference caused the problem was that it contained slashes. The referred  text was
    Badeværelse/værksted/mørkekammer
which means Bathroom/workshop/darkroom, but in fact the meaning is important.
The conclusion is: InDesign cannot handle slashes in index references which conclusion I hope you will distribute to any user with problems.
Thank you for supplying me with tools to solve my problem.

  • InDesign CS4 crashes during "Export Book for Digital Editions"

InDesign CS4 crashes each time I select "Export Book for Digital Editions." I tried deleting my preferences and then creating books that contain only two very simple INDD documents, but I still get this error:
    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
    Runtime Error!
    Program: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS4\InDesign.exe
    R6025
    - pure virtual function call
I can export books as EPUB files without problems on my personal laptop, which has InDesign CS5. But we're using CS4 at the office. Any ideas?
I'm running InDesign CS4 version 6.0.6 on Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, Service Pack 3, HP Compaq desktop, Intel Core 2 Duo CPU.

google r6025 runtime error and you'll see a lot of advice for tracking down and correcting the problem.

My pc has crashed and lost a considerable amount of music and videos from iTunes the files are still in iTunes but are empty, will iTunes Match restore my content over the cloud?

Hm ... I guess I can't edit the post above. Anyway, I seem to have solved it by ...
    Quitting iTunes.
Going into Home / Music / iTunes, and renaming the file "iTunes Library.itl" to "iTunes Library (corrupt).itl".
Entering Time Machine, and restoring the "iTunes Library.itl" file from a few days ago. I went back two days, which seemed far enough back to be "before" the problem but not far enough back to have trouble with recent acquisitions.
Re-opening iTunes - and everything seemed to be back in order.
So that's fine for now. We'll see if the solution is stable.
Very, very tentative assignment of blame: I believe iTunes crashed earlier today after I'd synced photos from my iPhone to iPhoto, and then iTunes crashed while iPhoto was closing (and taking its sweet time doing so). If that was indeed the case, that's at least the second time in the past couple of months that trying to sync iPhone photos to iPhoto has caused me significant problems. (The last time led to 80% of my iPhone suddenly being occupied by "Other", and a full restore of the darn thing.)

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to backup, not good, then you can redownload some purchases in some countries.
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • System crashed and lost library, want to recover

system crashed and lost library, want to recover

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I don't know how to fix the xml file or prevent it's damage except to keep a current backup copy of the domain.sites2 file. You can do that on an hourly basis with Time Machine or use a backup application like Synk Standard which can do incremental backup (i.e. copy just those new or changed files) at any time.
As for separating the sites into their own domain files I use iWebSites to manage over 75 individual sites. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your original Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process and move it to another location on your HD until you're satisfied the separation process is completed and what you want.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want.
There is a downside to this method if you're publishing to MobileMe. When publishing multiple sites to MMe from their own separate domain file the last published site will be the default site when using the default URL for that MMe account: http://web.me.com/MobileMeAccountName/. That could mess up any CNAME forwarding if you have a domain name pointed to your default MMe site.

  • HT203167 Computer crashed and lost all music.  How can I get a listing of all prior purchases and get them downloaded again?

Compaq computer crashed and lost all music that was on the computer. How would I go about getting a listing of all purchased items and download them again? I know when i first got set up it said I could download up to 2 times when purchased and I have only downloaded once.  But need a listing of songs as well.

One thing that I also recommend in the future is to back your iTunes library up relatively regularly.  You can get your purchases in the cloud just fine, typically, but at the very least, it will save some time by backing it up.

  • InDesign CS4 crash

    hi All
    I hope you can help!
I have an InDesign CS4 file that has been working fine but today crashed and will not open now. I get the "file may be damaged" warning and when I hit OK to open anyway, then InDesign crashes (just the program, not my whole system). the file is not that complex or a particularly large file.
I still have that "ghost" file thats in the directory that has a .idlk extension... that file will not open either. it says its locked.
Im on a Mac running 10.4.11
is this file toast? is there anyway to recover it? Im keeping my fingers crossed that I did not just lose 10 hours worth of work.
thank you all for the help.

Is the ghost file there even with no indesign files (by ghost file I presume you mean hidden file)
If it is cut it and paste it to a new location for the time being.
Then try to open the file.
InDesign has a recovery folder located in your computer
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign\Version 4.0\InDesign Recovery
Where you can find recovery files. If removing the "ghost files" don't work then clear the recovery folder.
*warning updates to your file may be lost*
