InDesign CS4 Freezes

I have a 95 page book, that I began in Indesign CS3 and then saved as CS4.
Each time I initially open this file now, CS4 conpletely loads it, verifies the links, and then propmptly freezes up. After closing IDCS4 in Task Manager, I reopen IDCS4, and then open the same file, and all is well.
Its just on the first time each day when I open the file that I get the freeze up. Very repeatable and very strange. HAs anyone else experience this?
Win Vista 64 Ultimate.
8GB Ram
NVidia Quaddro FX4400
All of my other software behaves fine:
CorelDraw X4
AICS4
PSCS4
AutoCad 2009
Solidworks
Thanks,
Bob

So you are able to set up the new doc in the dialog and say OK before it freezes? And InDesign doesn't disappear, right?
You can open task manager by right-clicking in the system tray in the taskbar. Choose task manager, and look at the "Applications" tab first. What is the status of InDesign, which should be listed there if it is running. If it's hung it will say "not responding."
Next place to look is in the Performance tab, where you'll see current CPU usage and a box called Commit Charge. If the CPU usage is at 100% and stays there, the processor is working on something, and that may be either interfering with ID, or it could indicate a malfunction in ID itself. In the Commit Charge box, if the "Peak" value is near or above the "Limit" value it is an indication that you need more memory to run all the stuff you have open.

  • Indesign CS4 freezes when I export to InCopy CS4 or when I update an InCopy File

Indesign CS4 freezes when I export to InCopy or when I update an InCopy CS4 File. I have done some of the troubleshooting steps already and have already re-installed and re-updated through Adobe Updater. But the problem still exists. Anyone have any patches or fixes? Or have had the same issue and fixed it?
I'm working on a Power Mac G5 with OSX version 10.4.11

I am having the same issue with Flash CS4. Did you find a solution?

  • InDesign CS4 freezed up and closes when editing existing files

I worked all day yesterday on a new file, layout etc.  I went into the file last night to edit it and every time I would try to edit, either copy, move , fitting, it frose and closed.
I have noticed that when I right click my mouse to get the drop down menu to make an edit this is when it freezes.
Please help.. have several projects with deadlines

I experienced the similar problem this morning. Only, my InDesign CS4 closes.
I can start InDesign OK, but after I select a file to open it closes after just about two seconds. The same situation is with older files.
There is just one small file that loads fine. (My problem file is 185Mb)
After a few hours of playing with InDesign I moved away from it and removed the updated fonts I installed yesterday evening and everything works fine! It must be something to do with Windows 7 on this machine, because my laptop which runs Vista and CS2 had no problems with updated font.
Now I have to find out what is wrong with my font...

  • Indesign CS4 freezes when copying text to Word 2007

I have a user that copies text from Indesign CS4 to Word 2007 documents.  She has Word 2007 open, then opens an InDesign file and copies the text.  She then clicks on the Word document and pastes the copied text.
She is unable to go back to the Indesign file.  Clicking on InDesign on the toolbar does not activate the InDesign window.  The only open she has is to right-click and close InDesign.
She has been doing this without any problems until approximately three weeks ago.
Is this a known problem?  What is causing the conflict?

The OS is XP SP3.  We are using Adobe Type Manager with Adobe fonts.  The only other application running was Outlook 2007.
The user is out today but I will check if Alt Tab will cycle back.

  • InDesign CS4 freezes when minimized

As soon as I minimize InDesign CS4 I cannot restore it. If I try to restore it the only thing that happens is I can see a palette (eg charactor formatting) or sometimes a control panel. I then can only shut InDesign down using Windows task manager.
I have no issues with Illustrator or Photopshop CS4 and the problem occurs even if I have no document open in InDesign. I also tried with no applications running and it still happens. I have reinstalled InDesign but that has not helped either. I am not using the Windows "Aero" apprearence (which sometimes causes strange problems). Any suggestions?
I am running Indesign 6.03 on a Dell Inspiron 9400 with Intel Core Duo 2GB of RAM @2GHZ Vista Ultimate

Seeing the same here with version 6.0.4 on Windows 7 Professional 64bt, running NVidia GT8600 graphics card(latest drivers).
Same fix above cures it, but still annoying that it happens at all.

  • Indesign CS4 Windows - Locks up for 2-3 minutes

Hello I'm a sytems support guy at an art school and I'm looking for some help with a pecular problem.
We have about 500 PCs and 300 Macs where I'm located all of which are loaded with CS4 Master Collection. At the moment we have an issue with Indesign CS4 freezing when being used in Windows.
    The scenerio:
A user logs into windows via active directory.
They have 2 network shares automatically mounted.
They start Indesign, it loads fine.
After about 3-5 minutes InDesign completly locks up.
Most students report that InDesign has crashed, which it doesn't, it just freezes.
You wait 2-3 minutes and Indesign works again for an undetermined amount of time.
    System Stats:
3 HP models: z600, xw6600, xw8400 (the problem is most noticable on the xw8400)
    Running windows XP sp3
the xw8400 has 2 gigs of ram, a 160gb primary drive and an 80gib Temp drive.
    Quadro FX 1500 video card.
All students have a network share drive that stores their prefences and any files they may need.
(note that the problem arises both as local admin and as a student)
I've tested Indesign after updating it and the error still occurs.
I'm kind of stuck on a solution to this any help would be apreciated.

First off, thanks for the quick reply.
Yeah I assumed the network at first too, but when I used a local account the lock up still occurs.
It's strange, even when starting Indesign with no file, no links, no objects, I can let it sit for a few minutes and it just freezes on it's own.
I've also disabled preflight, auto correct, and dynamic spelling.
Oh and I also noticed that it's not occuring on our z600s, which use the same network log in method.

  • Help...anchored objects in CS4 freezes Indesign

I was really excited to use anchored objects in a recent project where I wanted to insert a bunch of callout text boxes peppered throughout the document layout that would reflow with it's neighboring text as I made changes.
When I had about 4 text boxes placed, InDesign CS4 would freeze with the spinning rainbow wait cursor spinning forever. It would freeze just as I started entering settings in the "custom" anchored object dialogue window.
What am I doing wrong? Or is this a bug?
Thanks for any advice or suggestions.

I've been working on a file I created for 4 hours.  Saved properly many times, reopened and resaved with no problems.  Now it won't open.
Every other file I have opens fine, but this one just freezes up the program.   I tried recovering, deleting the recovery file, etc....
It sounds like Peter has it hand, but some possibilities are Preflight and SING; you can try disabling them both. What OS?
    What version of InDesign? 6.0.6?

  • InDesign CS4 Mac starts but then freezes

Indesign CS4 Mac starts up but freezes from there. Trying to open files or create new ones results in the filename appearing at the bottom of the Window drop-down menu, but the file doesnt appear on-screen.
The same result occurs when opening files using "Open Recent File" as well as double-clicking the file in Finder or using "Open With" in FInder.
It couldnt have picked a worse time to crap out - right in the middle of an urgent contract!! Dang Cleetus!!
Any suggestions - apart from re-installing the program?
    Cheers,
    John

Tried renaming InDesign Saved data and InDesign Defaults and restarting InDesign - that didnt seem to fix the problem -  after re-starting InDesign it seemed the program didnt write new versions of the files on re-start.
Will head back to the office & connect to my 23" display & see if ID works OK with that - that would confirm that it's a screen pointing issue?
    Would re-installing ID help?
    Cheers,
    John

  • InDesign Keeps freezing when I am working on a project.

Recently, my version of InDesign CS4 has been freezing after about 5 minutes of working with the program. I constantly have to forecfully shut down InDesign and then am constantly having to recover my documents. I have had the program for almost 2 years and have never had this problem before. It is particulalry frustrating because I just recently finished a very large project without any problems and I have never had problems with the program before. I am working in Windows 7, which has is not a recent upgrade. Any suggestions please?

TweakUI, sometimes also called "Power Toys" is a utility from Microsoft that allows you to make some changes to the system more easily than editing the registry. It, too is known to cause problems from time to time (and no recent file list is typical of the "paranoia" settings that erase file history). You lose the open recent list when you reset the prefs, too.
Let me just recap wHait I think you've told us.
No font manager, newly installed fonts have been removed.
    No third party plugins
ID hangs with old files and new files
ID now hangs in a new user, too
screen resolution is set to max
no custom font size in Windows
    Is all that right?
Do you have a printer hooked up to this computer? Is the default printer local (directly connected) or connected through a network.

  • InDesign CS4 repeated crashes

    Hi
We have been using InDesign CS4 for several months now, and suffer repeated crashes.  Our systems support contractors have looked at the network, and say its a software issue.  Running it on 2 PCs, Windows 7 OS.
Initaially we thought it was network latency issues, and certainly the number of crashes have reduced since we co-located all InDesign and image files on the PC's hard drive rather than on a network storage device.  However, the application is still prone to crashing.
Certain actions seem to spark a crash; but not always.  Applying character styles, applying master pages to existing document pages, duplicating spreads and moving pages within the document are all risky actions.
The symptom of a crash are sometimes just a freeze, with no associated warning.  That requires a CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up the windows task manager which will show InDesign as not responding.  Alternatively, one gets a warning from InDesign that it has encountered an unexpected problem and needs to shut down.
Now we are working exlusively from our hard drives (I've even tried working with the network cable un-plugged to ensure I'm not inadvertantly linked to a resouce on a network sortage system), we get fewer crashes; maybe just 5 or 6 a day.  Before it could be 10-20.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
Would you please provide with some more details.
Is it happening while working with some specific file or all the files.
I would recommend to try a new user account on your machine.
Is it happneing with one specific machine or all other machines ?
Did you tried re-creating Indesign preferences.
Is it happening only with Indesign or any other Adobe or non Adobe application ?
Are you getting any error message?
Is it Freezing or closing down automatically ?
When did this issue started happening ?
If you remmember any kind of specific change after which it started happening or since the time you have installed it is happening ?
Is your Indesign up to date ?
I would recommend you to try below mentioned document. It might be of help to you:

  • Problem with indesign CS4 program

I've searched for this already but have had no luck finding a fix. My problem is that when I am running indesign CS4 on my laptop I cannot select the master page nor any other pages. Also certain other controls are not functioning like ruler guides, scroll, direct select tool. I have become so frustrated with it. I am running it on my desktop just fine and have no issues at all. My laptop is running Vista home prem. 64 bit. its an intel core 2 duo @ 2.26 Ghz, 4GB ram video card is a Geforce 9800m GTS with 1 GB ram. I have uninstalled all my CS4 (design premium) programs ran adobe clean script reloaded CS4 design prem. and still doesnt work right.
(all the other programs in CS4 design premium work fine except Indesign)
I have already tried running it as admin with no luck.
I am not in preview (I cannot even select preview)
    Please can someone help me???

Alrighty, I finally managed to fix MY problem; I don't know if it will deal with your problem, saltydog.
After losing an entire day to uninstalling, reinstalling, updating, and banging my head against the wall, I stumbled across an unobtrusive little user comment at the bottom of that "Troubleshoot system errors and freezes in InDesign and InCopy (CS4 on Windows)" TechNote.
    User Carolyn Ccc posted this:
"Before tinkering with files, reinstalling, creating new admin accounts, et cetera...  I suggest checking your monitor's "DPI Scaling" setting. The problems seem to have cleared up for me when I re-set to the default (96dpi) rather than the 120dpi I'd selected for the benefit of my aging eyes."
And user Carolyn Ccc was right.  I, too, had my monitor set at 120dpi, since I am slightly visually impaired.  Changing the scaling was a magic bullet fix for all the problems I was having.
I am just hoping that Adobe will kindly develop a patch that will allow InDesign to function correctly at the greater DPI scaling, for people like me who need the larger resolution on their monitor.  It is very tedious to have to switch back and forth every time I want to do a little work in InDesign.

  • Indesign CS4 Crashes When Printing to PDF

    Hi all,
I've been having an issue lately with InDesign CS4 crashing every time I print to PDF. I've never had the issue before, but now it seems to happen constantly. I am running Windows 7, and when I print to PDF, my dialog box gets to "DOWNLOADING PROCSET" and then it just freezes and goes unresponsive. If I end InDesign through Task Manager, and reopen to try and print again, the same issue happens. If I completely restart my computer, reopen InDesign, and then print, it will work fine, for a while. This is happening with multiple documents. I am trying to avoid reinstalling, but may have to try that next.
When InDesign gets in its freezing spree, I've quit and reopened InDesign, then printed to a Postcript and Distilled with no issues, but the PDF printing still does not work.
    Any ideas?

    Hi
New to this forum, but I too have had a problem with printing a PDF from InDesing. what I have found is when my dialog box gets to "DOWNLOADING PROCSET" and it just freezes, whats actually happening is the 'SAVE AS' dialogue box has appeared, but is not the active window. When I ALT+TAB through my open applications, in Windows 7 it changes your screen to 'preview' the programs you flick through, and I find it there, attached to outlook, or the internet. Upon further investigation, it appears to attach itself to which ever program I click, after the initial "DOWNLOADING PROCSET" freezing.
So now when I PDF from InDesign and it freezes at this point, I click the Desktop icon (in windows 7 its the rectangle in the bottom right corner) and it seems to 'place' the 'SAVE AS' dialogue box here, where I can actually select it and click SAVE.
    Hope this helps?
    Mike

Recently found InDesign CS4 always create many tmp files in the hard disk, and the function of exporting file to InCopy was disappear in the menu bar, what should I do? How to fix it?

  • Indesign CS4 crashing when opening excel

I am running Windows XP and when I have a document open in Indesign CS4 and I try to open an Excel 2007 document Indesign freezes up and becomes unresponsive. I have tried resetting the preferences, increasing the amount of virtual memory and the issue still persists.
    Any help would be appreciated.

What are your system specs?  Particularly RAM, you need at least 2GB to start multitasking with Indesign....  And do you have spare space on your hard drive?

  • Unable to install InDesign CS4

I'm the It person that has to install software for my users and here's today's headscratcher.  My user has InDesign CS2 installed and working on his XP computer.  I try to install InDesign CS4 upgrade and the installer says it can't find the previous version in the standard location.  It's there, I checked.  Anyway, I offer it the serial number that I got off Adobe's own licensing website.  The installer says nope not a valid serial number.  Remember this came from Adobe's own website, but whatever.  I install the demo version, try to license it and it still can't find the working CS2 installation and won't take the CS2 serial number.
So tell me how am I suppose to get CS4 Upgrade to install in this scenerio?

    First -- don't even ask.
All the answers are YES.  I have adequate hardware.  Brand new MacBookPro.  Lots of RAM, hard drive space. fast Intel Core Duo.
Have spent the equivalent of, I think, 143 weeks talking to Adobe (a) tech support and (b) customer support folks who all say and do the same thing:
    1) Send canned, prepacked responses that ignore your original message
    2) Act surprised to learn that the InDesign installer STILL HANGS UP WHILE "CHECKING SYSTEM PROFILE...."
    3) Recommend all kinds of bizarre, ridiculous solutions --- implying it's probably the customer's fauilt.
    4) Don't speak good English
    5) Never  check back to see if the problem is solved or the customer has decided to throw himself (and his adobe software) off a cliff
Personal judgments are totally unfair, of course.   But in the spirit of unfairness, what Adobe provides is  Adobe's unspeakable indefensible handling of this situation in specific -- and customer service in general.
Its customer base is riddled with customers who've paid for and received a NONWORKING product.  A defective product. Period.  If this were a prescription drug or a car, the govt would have ordered recalls by now.
Adobe's labrynthine, convoluted recommended "fixes"  (delete and reinstall all your Adobe products....reinstall your system software .... go stand in the rain and burn incense .... whatever) is like Ford Motor telling the customer:  "Yes, we admit the defect.  But, hey, at least we feel bad about it. Why don't you try selling your car and buying a new one."
Am a syndicated newspaper columnist.  Have already got the draft of a very funny 700-word commentary to distribute about this.  Adobe will hate it. But I'm sure we'll both get over it.
    Eeegads.
    Dear Adobe:
For the record, only  SOME of the people with the Install/Setup issue (installer freezes at about 90% while checking system profiler) have inadequate hardware. Most have adequate hardware.  We've all  read the bulletins and bulletin boards. So has Adobe.  We know it; Adobe knows it.  Adobe knows it because ALL OF US HAVE SPENT HOURS ON THE PHONE WITH ADOBE ONLY TO CONFIRM THAT (A) OUR HARDWARE IS MORE THAN ADEQUATE AND (B) THEY HAVEN'T A CLUE WHAT WE SHOULD DO.
This is one the largest software makers in the world.  They have enough programmers and engineers on their janitorial staff to fix this...make the nightmare go away.  How?  Produce a NEW installer that is not affected by whatever it is that is affecting the current one!  (I'm a genius, right?)  Or a two-part installer that first scans and fixes the obstacle, THEN installs InDesign. (I'm also flexible)
Adobe's failure to do this -- more than eight months after being made  aware of the problem -- is not one of this company's finer moments.

It's time to consider new hardware.
