InDesign CS4 locks up with "out of memory" dialogue

I'm running Windows 7 on a new computer with beaucoup RAM and memory . . . no way in the world we're out of space here.  This window pops up and even if I click "ok" it keeps returning and I have to end the program through the task manager to get out of it.  What's going on here?  This is a new issue; I've been running inDesign on this system for several months with several huge files in production at once and many other programs in the background (like Photoshop and Access, etc.) and havehad  no difficulties.
The only thing that is new is that I've installed a new WD external hard drive to run backups, and my old Lacie external is now mounted internally as a slave.  These changes should not be affecting inDesign . . . should they?
What's going on?
Thanks for any help,
writerpamela

The problem you are experiencing unfortunately has nothing to do with the amount of physical memory in your system, its hardware configuration, or the OS version you are running. You could be running Windows 7 64-bit with 24GB of memory and the same problem will occur.
The out of memory message typically means that some internal tables within InDesign's own memory space and/or that of its Adobe Core Technology components have reached capacity. You are much more likely to see this message if you are editing very long and/or graphically complex documents and page through the entire document and/or do many edits without saving the document (use "save as" to be safe), exiting InDesign, and then restarting InDesign and continuing editing of the document in question. Exiting and restarting InDesign clears the memory problem. FWIW, I've seen this problem the most when attempting to export PDF from some long, complex documents. My workaround is to save the document, exit InDesign, restart InDesign, open the document and without paging through any of the document (other than the currently displayed page, obviously), immediately initiating the PDF export process.

  • Problem with out of memory and reservation of memory

    Hi,
    we are running a very simple java program on HP-UX that do some text substitution - replacing special characters with other characters.
    The files that are converted are sometimes very large, and now we have come to a point where the java server doing the work crashes with "Out of memory" message. (no stack) when it process one single 500MB large file.
    I have encountered this error before(with smaller files) and then I have made the maximum Heap larger, but now when I try to set it to 4000M
    i get the message:
    "Error occurred during initialization of VM
    Could not reserve enough space for old generation heap"
    When it crash with this message, my settings are:
    -XX:NewSize=500m -XX:MaxNewSize=1000m -XX:SurvivorRatio=
    8 -Xms1000m -Xmx4000m
    If I run with Xmx3000m instead the java program starts but I get Out of memory error like:
    java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
    <<no stack trace available>>
    The GC log file created when it crashes looks like:

    We are running:
    java version "1.3.1.02"
    Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.3.1.02-011206-02:17)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 1.3.1 1.3.1.02-JPSE_1.3.1.02_20011206 PA2.0, mixed mode)
    We have 132GB of physical memory and a lot of not used Swap space, so I cant imagine we have a problem with that.
    Can anyone please suggest what to do proceed troubleshooting or to change some settings? I'm not into this Java really so I really need some help.
    Usually the java program handles thousands of smaller files (around 500 KB - 1 MB sized files).
    Thanks!

    You have a one to one mapping? Where one character is replaced with another?
    And all you do is read the file, replace and then write?
    Then there is no reason to have the entire file in memory.
    Other than that you need to determine if the VM (which is not a Sun VM) has an upper memory bound. That would be the limit that the VM will not go beyond regardless of memory in the system.
    We have 132GB of physical memory and a lot of not used Swap spaceOne would wonder why you have swap space at all.

  • CC 2014 Progs leave me plagued with out of memory issues which the previous versions don't exhibit.

    The new CC 2014 suite of progs seem rather memory hungry? I am plagued with out of memory issues trying to use them. The old CC progs work just fine! Is there a new minimum spec for memory now? For now I am forced to use the old versions as the new ones are just un useable...some 'upgrade'!
    Phil

    Me too!  Seems whenever I run more than one CC app I get out of memory errors.  I have Win 7 with 32GB ram.  Only have this problem with CC 2014, not CS6.

  • Indesign CS4 really slow with CMYK images

    Can anyone help me solve this? InDesign CS4 document with a few pages, and approx 24 images on a page. With CMYK images imported the rendering and re-rending is very sluggish. The Processes shows 99% usage for InDesign. Makes it almost impossible to work on a document.
    Any ideas to fix this?
    I'm using an 27" iMac with 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 - Memory: 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3

    Doesn't surprise me. I find getting help in Adobe forums/support/community very confusing to find my way around.

  • InDesign CS 6 keeps crashing "out of memory" ???

    Hi
    I am having trouble with InDesign CS 6.
    It does not respond. I can open a document, but as soon as I select a tool it starts hanging. I then have to use Windows task manager to end CS 6.
    After the 5th time of ending CS 6 and receiving the message "Adobe InDesign is out of memory "  I updated InDesign and recieved the following  error code:
    Adobe Extension Manager CS5 5.0 Update
    Update is not applicable. Error Code: U44M1P28.
    InDesign is still hanging and I still have to use Windows task manager to quit the program.
    Would it help if I reinstall InDesign?
    This has never happend to me before.
    Please help me with this, I have extreme amounts of work that needs to be completed this weekend as I am on a tight deadline for Monday morning

  • How to cope with Out of Memory Errors

    Hi, I am distributing a desktop application to the general public written in Java 1.4.2. How much memory is required is approximately propertional to how many files they load so Ive tried to pre-emtp OutOfMemoryErrors by checking when memory usage is 95% and preventing the loading of additional files above this level with the following code:
    protected static void checkMemory()
            throws LowMemoryException
            if (Runtime.getRuntime().freeMemory() < Runtime.getRuntime().maxMemory() * 0.05)
                Runtime.getRuntime().gc();
                if (Runtime.getRuntime().freeMemory() < Runtime.getRuntime().maxMemory() * 0.05)
                    MainWindow.logger.severe("Memory low:" + Runtime.getRuntime().freeMemory() / 1024 / 1024 + "MB");
                    throw new LowMemoryException("Running out of memory");
        }but this code is not robust, sometimes users reports LowMemoryException when the user has only loaded a few files.
    I tried removing this code, but then user can get an OutOfMemory error whcih can cause problems with whatever code was running at the time and leave the application in an inconsistent state, if I just exit the application immediately it would be very annoying for users that are int he middle of something.
    I also have adjusted the -Xms and -Xmx settings but cannot decide on a suitable default.
    What I would ideally like the application to do is to extend its heap space as required upto the limits of the users machine, and if it reaches memory limits handle the lack of memory in a releiable manner allowing the user to continue using the application in a safe way

    Unfortunately the metadata is stored displayed within a JTable, so even if If I had in in a Database I think it would all have to be loaded into memory for display within the JTbale in a timely fashion.
    Anyway I think Ive found the problem with the original code, it was reporting memory low when almost all the allocated memory was being used but had'nt accounted for the fact that maxMemory limit had not been reached so more memory could be allocated.
    I think the correct code is:
    protected static void checkMemory()
            throws LowMemoryException
            if (Runtime.getRuntime().totalMemory()  -  Runtime.getRuntime().freeMemory() > Runtime.getRuntime().maxMemory() * 0.95)
                Runtime.getRuntime().gc();
                if (Runtime.getRuntime().totalMemory()  -  Runtime.getRuntime().freeMemory() >  Runtime.getRuntime().maxMemory() * 0.95)
                    MainWindow.logger.severe("Memory low:" + (Runtime.getRuntime().maxMemory()  - (Runtime.getRuntime().totalMemory()  - Runtime.getRuntime().freeMemory() ))/ 1024 / 1024 + "MB");
                    throw new LowMemoryException("Running out of memory");
        }

  • Indesign CS4 colour issues with Onyx 7.3 RIP

    Hi all. I understand that Onyx Production house and postershop are having problems with colours dropping to white or changing to a completely different colour when sent from Indesign CS4 or a PDF created from the programme. I want to swap to indesign completely, but find myself having to go back to Quark, because the results I get in the rip from indesign files are so random. Has anyone found a solid work around?
    Thanks in advance for your help

    InDesign can often send more complex postscript than the other apps, it is after all, dealing with a lot more types of information all at the same time. The problem comes in when ID invokes a part of the Postscript standard that hasn't been properly implemented in the RIP.
    As you've seen, a workaround that commonly is successful is to export, or even print, to PDF, and sned tot he RIP from Acrobat.

    According to this log, process "dropbox" triggers oom-killer, which has the effect of killing X because it's the most memory-hungry process (833 Mb, I think).
    Does it stop if you stop dropbox?
    No. But even now X org averages almost 2gb and eventually goes up to 3gb.
    Do you have a swap partition?
    no

    On Intel, I had some similar (but not exact) problems crop up recently.  Turning off testing helped.
    Nah, no testing.
    It feels like a bug, but it seems like I'm only the one. Not sure what could of changed.

  • Premiere Pro CC crashing with "Out of Memory"

    Hi,
    I have a serious problem who irritates me !
    My project contain 75min of clips with effects, sounds and titles.
    After few minutes, Windows tell me what I have not enough memory, PP crash and I lose my unsaved changes.
    Indeed, PP eat 13go/16go of my RAM.
    However, I set limitation to 10go (see the snapshot) :
    How can I fix this ?!?

    Just incrase the windows Swap File.
    Serioulsy, is it a joke ?
    54go of the swap (set to 100go for test) + 9go of the ram.
    Never had this before.

  • Is there any way to disable the lock screen with out the screen staying on?

    I know there is away to disable the pass lock but is there a way to disable the screen from locking every time the screen goes off? cause it's so much easier to just press the answer button than to slide it to unlock. phone versions iPhone 4s and iPhone 5c.

    You're confusing a direct answer with a rude one.  Wjosten's reply wasn't rude.  It was accurate and direct, without any sugercoating.  You can't get the device to operate the way that you want (lock the screen, but not really 'lock' the screen).  It's not a 'screensaver' like on your computer.  It's a lock screen, designed to prevent accidental activation of the device screen, and possibly launching apps, making phone calls, etcetera.
    If you want an option added that allows the device to do what you want, tell Apple.

    This is a technical assistance forum, not an 'emotional assistance' forum.  Wjosten was not rude or insulting in any way.  You were.
    This is where we tell you how to solve your technical issues.  There are no shoulders to cry upon here.
    Direct, accurate information.  That's what wjosten provided.

  • InDesign CS4 memory problems

    I have had memory problems with InDesign CS4 (and also with Photoshop CS4) for about a year now. If my file has a lot of pictures (100+) at some stage I get error message "Out of memory" . In the beginning it just have problems with redraw pictures (half of picture stays black), but also export to pdf is halted by same message and printing to file also. No problems in the beginning of large files or with files with text only. At one point InD just has enough and starts to behave like a ... Only solution is to export InD CS4 file as INX and continue to work in CS3 (but it takes a long time to match the text flow because textengine works differently). It's not monitor, because I have changed monitor during this year (from LaCie 22 blue IV to EIZO 27"). It seems that it's not video (NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX, 512 MB) also, because everything functions normally with CS3. I know, that it's not a proper video card for my work, but one likes to play Bioshock sometimes... Something strange happens with Photoshop CS4 also when I work for a long time without shutting down the program. After about editing 60+ pictures Photoshop CS4 begins to slow down (specially with using clone tool).up to impossible to work. You just have to wait while the cursor is dragging itself to right place an picture is redrawing itself. Seems like memory cannot empty itself and gets overloaded when working with CS4. No problems with Photoshop CS3. One cannot notice anything with small files. I can work with CS3 but there are features I would like to use in CS4.
    Have anyone experienced anything similar?
    Claudius
    Win XP SP3
    4GB RAM
    video NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX 512MB with latest drivers
    CS4 and CS3

    Having exactly the same here. 16 Gb of ram in an 8 core 64 bits Vista system. Absolutely no infections on my system. Having great troubles getting my work ouputted.
    I'm making an overview with 50 cards with pictures in them and bevels on the edges, dropshadows. It might be heavy but it is a normal question from my client.
    I don't care if transparency is difficult for Adobe to handle. They shouldn't make it public if it is not properly tested. I am now so far as to make the composition in photoshop ( if that works)
    What I thought was the problem is that I originaly placed indesign files in frames. But there is a great script out there on www.automatication.com to convert that in  editable object again. Works great so check that out. But this didn't solve my problem. The effects used in these items are the memory consummers and Adobe is not freeing the memory properly.
    Advise to Adobe: check also to dropshadows feature because this is not scaling up or down with the rest of the effect.
    I'm am writing a realtime 3D renderengine here, if CS5 is not working fine, I might digg in to this one as well, getting a bit tired of waiting for properly working software.

  • Indesign cs5.5 out of memory error

    Hi,
    I am having constant problems with out of memory errors in indesign cs5.5 (version 7.5.3).  I am on a mac. Everything is up to date, I have preflight off, my display performance is on typical view and have tried restarted my computer multiple times.  I do not have any other programs open and the document I have open is 3 pages (8.5x11) with little content and a couple links to small images.  I do not know what to do!  This is affecting my job and my performance!! Please help!!!  Thank you!

    close the application
    Rename the preferences from the following location
    /Users/[User Name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/Version #
    /Users/[User Name]/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/Version [#]
    then open a new document and then open the document you are facing an issue with it should clear the memory issue temporally
    Alternate :
    copy and paste the content in a new document and check if the 1st option does not work
    PS : changing the folder name would reset the preferences
    refer to KB : InDesign preferences and support file locations

  • My Fonts change when opening an InDesign CS4 file with InDesign CS6

    I've been experiencing strange behaviour when opening a InDesign CS4 file file with InDesign CS6: the kerning and spacing is all off:
    Original file:
    opened in InDesign CS6:
    Is this a conversion error? Is there a setting/pref I've got wrong?

    It's more than a year ago since this issue was reported, but at this time I'd had the same problem when opening a CS4 document in CS6/CC.
    I was amazed that a header, placed in capitals, looked different in CS6/CC. But at last, after several tests, i've came to the conclusion that "forced" capitals behaving different than "real" capitals. In others words: when you forcing text to capitals the kerning would be different in CS6/CC. When you place text in real capitals (Shift + text) the kerning is the same as in both InDesign versions.
    Text in CS4:
    As you can see: in CS4 there's no difference between real capitals en forced capitals.
    Below the results when opening the CS4 file in CS6/CC:
    I'm not sure if there are still people struggling with this problem, but hopefully was is this helpful.

  • Mac Pro - Adobe InDesign CS 2 - Out of Memory

    My client has bought 2 new 2.66GHz Quads for design purposes...
    Not a good idea by the look of it, as ID is constantly coming up with "Out of Memory" errors and checking the ram usage it's taking about 250Mb with no pages open and gets up to 500-600Mb when opening multiple docs but watching the VM it's up to 3+Gb !!! On my mac here, a Dual 1.25 Ghz G4, I get 150Mb and 550Mb VM only ...
    I am aware of it's running under emulation but boy my client is not happy !
    AND now my supplier has suggested throwing in another 2Gb of ram per machine as $1K per machine !!!
    I hope something is done by Adobe to at least help the situation until CS 3 comes out because the machine is pretty much useless for it's intended purpose...
    Mitch
    G4 Dual 1.25 GHz-1.5 Gb RAM 200+Gb Storage + Powerbook + Dell Laptop   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Plus over 1 TB of storage

    I might have missed it, but did you specify how much ram the MacPros have installed?
    Make sure that there's no problem with the memory, that is if you have 2 gig installed the computer recognizes the 2 gig. I've seen some cases where a user put in 2 gig but because of a bad module only 1 gig was recognized.
    Aside from that, rosetta basically doubles the memory requirements for any given application, so if you ran CS2 fine with 2 gig you'll need 4 gig to get the same type of usage.
    I use photoshop CS on my Macpro with 2 gig and I don't get out of memory errors. I've come close a few times but I also don't really do too much heavy lifting with photoshop.
    I think because of Rosetta, 4 gig is the sweetspot for the macpro. I have two and after working with photoshop and aperture I noticed a lot of swap files created. More so then when I was on a G5 with 2 gig.
