InDesign CS4 Mac starts but then freezes

Indesign CS4 Mac starts up but freezes from there. Trying to open files or create new ones results in the filename appearing at the bottom of the Window drop-down menu, but the file doesnt appear on-screen.
The same result occurs when opening files using "Open Recent File" as well as double-clicking the file in Finder or using "Open With" in FInder.
It couldnt have picked a worse time to crap out - right in the middle of an urgent contract!! Dang Cleetus!!
Any suggestions - apart from re-installing the program?
Cheers,
John

Tried renaming InDesign Saved data and InDesign Defaults and restarting InDesign - that didnt seem to fix the problem -  after re-starting InDesign it seemed the program didnt write new versions of the files on re-start.
Will head back to the office & connect to my 23" display & see if ID works OK with that - that would confirm that it's a screen pointing issue?
Would re-installing ID help?
Cheers,
John

  • Applications start but then freeze with dreaded 'spinning wheel'

Just lately I have been unable to import into iPhoto 5.0.4
Camera is recognised. I click on Import and then only one or two pics are imported before there is a complete freeze. The spinning wheel just goes on spinning.
When I try to stop import there is a very lengthy wait before the import appears to stop. I then try to drag the camera icon into reject but it does not work. I have to unplug the camera (dire threats of corruption etc) but so far images have been retained.
Thereafter it is not always possible to Quit in normal fashion and I have to 'power off' on the computer.
I have assumed this is an iPhoto issue but yesterday I came home to the evil spinning disc and my weekly automatic back-up in limbo. It had by then been going for eleven hours, so no question of impatience.
I use SuperDuper and those nice people told me to shut down. Disconnect all periphials and reboot using the cloned Back-up after which try again.
This worked but SuperDuper people told me I have one or two drive issues.
Does this mean I am looking at a new machine.
If anybody out there can help I will be extremely grateful.
    OSI.

    Sir.
Would you kindly give me the benefit of your knowledge to put the finishing touches to this Post?.
I shall get Disc W. soon, meanwhile the following is a mystery.
My Mac HD is partitioned so that I have a CLONE in one and then separately a BACK-UP.
The BACK-UP happens weekly automatically with SuperDuper. I have not bothered changing the CLONE.
However in view of dire warnings about my HD I decided to update the CLONE so that everything current is secured.
I then went to Disk Utility and tried again to repair the Mac HD. As before although the SMART status is Verified the previous issues remain, they are:-
MacHD Invalid node structure, The vol MacHD needs to be repaired. Error 1HFS checked. Vol needs repair.
Here is the mystery. I then tried the repair task on the LaCie external HD here I got the following messages:-
THE VOL CLONE OF MAC APPEARS TO BE OK (mounting disc)
THE VOL BACK-UP APPEARS TO BE OK (mounting disc)
2 HFS VOLUMES CHECKED - *NO REPAIRS WERE NECESSARY.*
Just to make certain I ran this twice with the same result,
Question is ... Would I be taking a risk if if I
did the procedure in reverse in an endeavor to get the "CLONED" version to replace the damaged version on the MacHD.
In other words use SuperDuper Smart Update and switch the usual source/destination instruction to SOURCE 'Clone of MAC' ... DESTINATION 'MacHD'.
This probably exposes my lack of understanding but I would be interested in your comments

  • HT4718 Recovery starts but then freezes before completing

My new mac would not start after trying to load google earth.  At start up it would not get past the page with apple, nor would it start in sage ,ode.  Tried to reload lion from inter net.  It downloads and tries the reinstall but will not finish.

Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine. That might also apply to new machines.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
That's because the Boot Camp volume was created, but your Mac hasn't been set up to start automatically from the Windows disc. Insert the Windows DVD and press C key while your Mac is starting to start Windows installation.
If you want to make sure that everything is correct, open Boot Camp Assistant and choose the option to remove Windows 7. Then, open that application again, select the option to install Windows 7 and you will be able to install Windows as usual

  • InCopy CS4 (PC) / InDesign CS4 (mac) not working

My client and I are trying to establish an InCopy CS4 (PC) / InDesign CS4 (Mac) workflow. Neither of us has ever used InCopy and we are all getting frustrated now that our first production cycle has come and gone and the client is not recouping the money they invested on this software. Our trial system was successful for awhile and then it just stopped. The client says she can't open the icma/icml files and they need the indd file. So I send a new batch of files with the indd included and still no luck.
I'm saving the assigments like I've been saving in our initial trial run. In ID I go to Incopy > Export > Add all Stories to Assignment. That creates the content folder and the .icma files. I zip everything and send it off via email attachment.
Is there something I am doing wrong? Something my client needs to do? I prefer not to have to send the indd file. Should I have to do that for them to edit in Incopy? I appreciate any advice. Thank you.  Lynn

Don't zip the files, that won't work.ID/IC is meant to work on a local server w/local staff. For a remote workflow you have to use a special technique.
After you create the assignment, use the Package for InCopy command in the Assignments panel. That creates an ICAP file that you send to the client.
When the double-click the ICAP file, it unpacks (it's like a zip file) on their computer and the assignment opens in InCopy. They work on the stories, and when they're done, they use the Return for InDesign command in *their* Assignments panel menu. That creates an IDAP file that they send to you.
When you open the IDAP file, it unpacks, looks for the INDD file (be sure not to rename or move it in the meantime), and updates the stories w/the editors changes.
Those are the broad strokes. It's covered more thoroughly in the online help file of both ID and IC ... you *and* your client should read up on it. And I cover it very thoroughly (4 videos ... Chapter 15) in my online Lynda.com tutorial on the CS4 workflow:
    http://www.lynda.com/home/DisplayCourse.aspx?lpk2=651
(Chapter 15 isn't one of the freebie chapters, but you (or anyone) can use my 24-hour free pass for full access to their entire training library: http://lynda.com/freepass/amconcepcion)

  • Download starts but then stops...

So I've read other forums and searched this website for one, but I still can't find the answer. Whenever I try to download the file it will start but then after some time get stuck on a percentage(different every time) and then stop all together. I've tried using different browsers and a download manager, I have plenty of storage space also. It still won't work
I've heard that this may have something to do with my internet and secruity? Or something? Can someone tell me how to fix that? My technical skills are very very low and this is the first time I've used a mac.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

I solved the problem. Had nothing to do with Mac or iphoto. Problem must be my the internet connection to my provider.
Upload at my office worked without any problem. One problem solved, now i am aware with a lot of discussions with my providers helpdesk  ;-)

Just updated my Ipad operating system and one of my apps starts but then the screen turns white, with only the advertisment at the top showing

    The normal suggestions.
Close the app,off fully.  Double tap the home screen then touch and hold any of the icons on the task bar until they jiggle, then close them all off by touching the - sign.
Then reboot the pad and try the spp again.  If same issue, delete the app, then reload it.  ( no charge). You may just have a bad copy.  If continues, write to the developer, they may need to do an update.  I have an older version of the same app and it works fine.
Since yours is the ad supported version, they are maing real sure you see the ad.  Is it as simple as you need to click thru the ad to get to the game?

trying to restore from iTunes back onto iPhone 5 - it starts but then error msg comes up saying there is not enough space on the iPhone to complete the restore - what do I do? - Help cos I've lost my contacts!!!!!

If you're not a developer then you really should not have upgraded.
I'm unsure how you can fix this as you have already done a back-up on iOS 7 and apple don't support firmware downgrades.

That's what I wanted to know. If it works in safe mode, which is what I asked, you have third-party software that is causing your problems. However, it doesn't look like it is fully defeated in safe mode, or something is damaged in the OS.
Uninstall everything you have the installs a startup item, launch daemon, or launch agent, or extension. If all works ok, install them one at a time. When it crashes, you've found the culprit.
EDIT: You may need to erase the drive and reinstall. You could likely restore your user data from your backup, but don't reinstall any utilities until you are ready to troubleshoot each one. Don't ever install anything that purports to clean, optimize, speed up, protect, or otherwise maintain your Mac. Those are the things that tend to cause the most problems.
