Indesign CS4 - Manual

Hi there,
I was just wondering if anyone could help me? I am soon to purchase InDesign CS4 and was just wondering if anybody knew if there was a good manual to buy with it? When I purchased Photoshop I also bought 'The Missing Manual' but cannot seem to find the same thing for InDesign.
Thanks.

A Visual Quick Start Guide by Sandy Coheen is very good for beginners, intermediates and perhaps even advanced people - although I don't own this one I am just going on reviews from other people on other forums and this forum.
And Real World InDesign CS4 is quite good -  I do have this one and it's great

  • Remove back image while exporting to PDF (InDesign CS4)??

    Hi All,
I have two images in my InDesign CS4 file and one image is hiding behind my second image. When I am exporting my InDesign file as Pdf and opening in Acrobat, Acrobat showing bottom image first and then showing my top image.
Is there any way to remove my bottom image which is appearing behind in my top image while exporting to Pdf.
I don't want remove manually because it happening with most of my InDesign file.
    Please suggest.
    Thanks
    Baljeet

I would move bottom image to separate layer and then eventually I would switch it off.
If you don't want to change anything in InDesign you can eliminate the second image in your already generated PDF.
Open your PDF in Acrobat Pro.
Advanced -> Print Production -> PDF Optimizer.
You can leave only "Clean Up" check box marked (eventually Transparency if Acrobat will not allow you to switch it off). All the rest leave unchecked.
This operation will remove hidden image.
Correction: It will not remove the image. It just made the PDF to be displayed much more faster that is why the second image appearance was not noticeable. Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • InDesign CS4 fails to open PageMaker 6.5 files correctly

After upgrading to InDesign CS4 this week, I attempted to open a PageMaker 6.5 file. It opened, but the pages were out of sequence. PageMaker 6.5 pages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc., opened in InDesign CS4 as pages 1, 3, 2, 5, 4, etc.
I purchased InDesign CS4 last week for the sole purpose of working on two books I created in PageMaker 6.5. For me, at present InDesign CS4 is useless. I hope Adobe provides a fix soon.
Also the upgrade rejected my PageMaker 6.5 serial number, I tried all the fixes at the Adobe website, finally after half an hour on the phone I was given a challenge/response code which then launched InDesign. If I need to reinstall InDesign, I'll have to go through the challenge response process again, i.e. another long wait on the support line.
I'm using OS 10.5.5 on the newest, unibody PowerBook Pro.

    From the help files:
    Flow text semi-automatically
With a loaded text icon, Alt-click (Windows) or Option-click (Mac OS) a page or frame.
The text flows one column at a time, as in manual flow, but the loaded text icon automatically reloads after each column is placed.
    Flow text automatically
With the loaded text icon displayed, hold down Shift as you do one of the following:
Click the loaded text icon in a column to create a frame the width of that column. InDesign creates new text frames and new document pages until all text is added to the document.
Click inside a text frame that is based on a master text frame. The text autoflows into the document page frame and generates new pages as needed, using the master frames attributes. (See About masters, stacking order, and layers.)
Flow text automatically without adding pages
With a loaded text icon, hold down Shift+Alt (Windows) or Shift+Option (Mac OS).

  • Cannot print to Adobe PDF from InDesign CS4 under Snow Leopard (10.6.2)

    Hello All,
Hopefully the subject line says all. Running SL and CS4, and after manually deleting the "old" Adobe PDF 9.0 driver, I am unable to print to PDF — or select "Save As Adobe PDF" under the Mac OS print dialog. This is insanely frustrating on may levels, as this was once a 3-minute operation and now has stretched into two days of futile searching for a solution.
There is a "tech doc" somewhere out there that offers a "solution". But beware, as it has not worked for me. Once you manually search for and remove the Adobe PDF 9.0 driver, you are supposed to magically be able to select the "Save As Adobe PDF" option. This is not the case for me.
Am trying to print, once again, from InDesign CS4 (NOT via the Export command as that will not allow me to set page size, or print separations). There is no Adobe PDF driver there anymore and there is no option to print PDFs. Of course, I can rest easier with the knowledge that everything is easier now in SL.

For a long time I was printing out of InDesign CS4 to a PS file and Distilling to a PDF, either composite or separated. Then Snow Leopard came along and that workflow seemed no longer available. It seems some well meaning people didn't understand a professional DTP workflow.
I had to work between two Macs to create a project and then make separations.
Eventually I went back to the Adobe InDesign forums and folks insisted that a Adobe PDF 9 printer should be available in my print drivers.
On that suggestion I completely uninstalled Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 and then reinstalled it.
It worked, I had the PDF printer back and can now print to a postscript file and do separations as I always have.
(Another story is that Snow Leopard killed my Epson 2200 printer)
At one stage I did an update of Acrobat 9 and it caused me to lose the Adobe printer again. Going through the procedure again brought it back and this time after a Acrobat 9 update it stuck.
In my opinion somebody screwed up. It's not enough to be able to create PDFs out of Microsoft Word. There are people out here trying to make a living and need to be able to create print separations for some offset printers.

  • Duplex Printing (InDesign CS4 v6.0 document from Reader)

I have a 26.55MB PDF file with lots of graphics downloaded from a website and using Reader 9.0.  The document was created with InDesign CS4, v6.0.  It is set up to print duplex on 8.5 x 11 paper with room for punch holes.  I am working with VISTA sp2, 32 bit OS and an HP photosmart 7350 (not equipped with automatic duplex printing, but will duplex manually) with an HP deskjet 5550 print driver.  I have two major issues:
1-The pages are designed to print to the edge of the page (color tabs) and my printer designates a print area.  Is there any way to change the print area on my printer?
2-The print setup will not recognize the document as double sided when I configure it to print double sided manually.  Then I tried printing odd first, then even.  It prints every other odd, then when I turn and refeed the document, it prints the other odds.  When I select even, it prints every even correctly.
Please help!  I need this 864 (432 double) page doc printed asap and trying to avoid printer costs.  Also afraid a printer might have the same problem???

Thank you. When I reinstalled InDesign I ticked the box to replace the preferences but the reinstall did  not do this. I know now because INDD did not open to that splash window as it did when I followed this tip.
    Always the simple solution....
At least I *hope* this is the solution. I have only tried it in one bit which had crashed before. (I'll revisit this list if it does not work)
InDesign was so bad yesterday I was seriously thinking of going back to Quark.

  • Indesign CS4 to PDF 1.3 transparency issue

We submitted an ad to the local newspaper that we created in Indesign CS4 and Acrobat 9. The ad was exported as a press-quality Acrobat 4 PDF.
It is a fairly simple layout, with type and a logo.
The headline and logo have a drop shadow applied with multiply blend mode. All colors are CMYK.
When the ad prints, the headline and logo have 1% black-filled boxes around them.
I know this is a transparency issue. However, we've done the same ad in Indesign CS3 and Acrobat 8 with no problems as long as we were CMYK and Acrobat 4.
Has something changed in CS4 that I don't know about? Could it be the multiply blend mode rather than normal?
Problem is, the newspaper can't give me a proof -- we have to wait and see what happens when they print. I can't simulate the problem on my end. The ad prints perfectly on my HP5000N in b/w and on my Phaser 8560 in color.
One workaround suggested was to export the file as a JPG or EPS and save as a Photoshop PDF. We did that on one ad that will run Monday, so we'll see. However, that makes the files with photos enormous -- like from 4 mb to 26 mb.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. We're in the middle of an ad campaign and we're resorted to the old-fashioned manual drop shadow out of desperation!

Has something changed in CS4 that I don't know about? Could it be the multiply blend mode rather than normal?
Something did change. In some cases (maybe all), the flattener in CS4 will put the shadow behind the background rather than in front. In both cases, though, using a RIP and/or viewer which is set to honor overprints will avoid the problem, and allow the artwork to render correctly.
You say that all colors are CMYK. Are you absolutely certain that the background (whatever the rectangular shadow-containing "boxes" knock out) is not a spot color? Your problem description would be more easily explicable if it were.

This in itself suggests that these folks do not know what they are doing (though I know that's not terribly helpful to you if you need to advertise with them). I must say that given current economic realities in the newspaper business, it's hard to image a paper refusing to cooperate with a paying advertiser - especially one who has been previously bitten - if not by the newspaper's own incompetence, at least by their unwillingness/inability to provide a proof.

  • InDesign CS4, Hyperlinks, Buttons and PDF

    Hi All,
I'm having a few issues getting InDesign CS4 to output a PDF with interactive elements that works correctly. The brief is fairly simple, a PDF at the top level should open other PDFs in a 'pdfs' folder. The top level PDF contains a lot of links to the content in the 'pdfs' folder, this changes over time and a new top level PDF is created.
Initially I created an InDesign document with a table containing hyperlinked text that you could click on, this was what the client wanted. I used the Hyperlink panel to create a new hyperlink that linked to a FILE and selected the PDF in the 'pdfs' folder that I wanted to open.
The problem with this approach is that the link when viewed in Acrobat contains the action to open a web link which immediately presents a warning that the document is attempting to connect to the file. If you allow it then the PDF is opened but in a web browser.
A second problem with this approach is one of portability, the links are hard coded and if you move the files to a new location they simply don't work as the previous location can't be found.
Next I tried creating buttons with actions to open the PDF. This works and is portable as there is some logic when looking for the file to open but you have no say over whether the file is opened in the same window or a new window.
I have been unable to work out how to change this in the PDF, you have to manually re-link the document in Acrobat where it will ask you whether you want a new window and then delete the previous action.
Is there a better way to achieve this other than creating all the links manually in Acrobat? The project currently has a relatively small number of links but that will not always be the case and I can only see this getting more difficult and error prone as the project moves forward.
    Regards Alan

    Try this.
    http://indesignsecrets.com/making-relative-hyperlinks-to-files-in-indesign.php
I tried this option and it worked, but it opens the pdf files in an internet browser.
But it did allow me to open the links on different computers without a problem.
    good luck.

  • Open InDesign CS4 files in CS4 in Windows 7

    Hi!
I want to open InDesign CS4 files in in InDesign CS4 but it opens with InDesign CS3. What can I do?
I also tried 'open with' by right clicking and select a default program but that didn't work for me. I also downloaded registry files from 'Windows 7 forum' to restore registry settings of 'open with', even that didn't work.
How can I manually change registry settings to open ID CS4 files in IDCS4?
    Please help me!
I'm weird of manually dragging and droping inDesing files to inDesign program window.
Should I uninstall IDCS3 and reinstall it?
    Thanks.

Did you install CS3 after CS4?
In any event, you might want to try this:

  • InDesign CS4 Repagination

Is there a way when inserting pages into a manual designed in InDesign CS4 to repaginate itself or must this be done manually?

Could you define what you mean by "repagination," please? Normally InDesign renumbers pages instantly when new pages are added.

  • InDesign CS4 vs. PageMaker

I work for an agricultural equipment manufacturer. We are a bit behind on new software because most of what we publish is fairly simple. We primarily use PageMaker for our assembly instruction manuals and FrameMaker for our operator manuals. We prefer the ease of use and flexibility that PageMaker has over FrameMaker since most of our assembly manuals have to be eyeballed as far as layout goes. My main question is how does InDesign CS4 compare to PageMaker and is it a significant enough change to warrant upgrading?
Currently running PageMaker 7, FrameMaker 7.2
    Windows XP SP3

Jeremiah -- I recently updated from PM7.01 to IND CS4. The issue isn't one of capability or even learning the new capabilities. Clearly IND CS4 has some great new features. It is about learning the way some actions now work (TOC, for example, is very frustrating). It is also about screwing around with the shortcuts that either no longer exist or have been changed ever so slightly (a 3-key shortcut instead of 2-key) or the apparently greater desire by the younger generation of software developers to operate everything as a game (requiring dexterity with keyboard [for those of us who actually write] AND mouse simultaneously) whereas most everything in PM could be reduced to elegant keyboard shortcuts thereby yielding better productivity. My biggest "search" I'm working on today -- trying to figure out why I can't engage a context menu with a click on a graphic and actually change the link from one file to another in one fell swoop [like the PM7 "link info" context menu item] and, while I'm at it, find out why the CS4 link tool never seems to be able to go to the correct folder when clicking to "relink" an existing link (it wants to go to the last folder I used when placing a graphic or the last graphic edited). Yes, I know, I'll post those questions in another thread.
The beauty of either a Yugo, Mustang, or Ferrari is that the gear box is pretty well in the same spot doing the same thing (it hasn't been moved to the door handle location on one versus the other or hidden away below the floor by some fancy "interface" door requiring a special release button sequence with your left hand). I'm guessing it'll take me a good 60 hours of time to work out my PM7 habits and techniques and get in the groove of the CS4 habits and techniques. Too bad this aspect apparently just isn't on the radar of the software developers.
BTW, I'm now on a Lenovo W700 with the Intel Core 2 Extreme CPU Q9300/2.53GHz/2.5 gig of ram/0.5TB of disk space with XP/SP3, and PM7 still works fine. Unfortunately, my editors at two of my publishers want me out of PM7. It keeps the economy going (well, at least Adobe's economy).

  • InDesign CS4 Package/Collect for Output - Missing links problem

I posted this on the PC forum by mistake so I apologise for doubling up on the message for those who have found the same message twice. As far as I know this is a Mac only problem!
Having recently freelanced in 3 design studios since the CS4 release, the Collect for Output problem within InDesign seems to be widespread. I've seen this happen on a range of machines from a G5's to laptops. All have been running the latest version of Leopard.
For some unknown reason any document created in older versions of Indesign that is opened in IndDesign CS4 does not collect all the linked files when it's packaged. All preflight checks are fine, the new live preflight feature shows green light, I even tried re linking all files to a new source folder containing all links and it still only randomly collects one third of the needed linked files with no obvious pattern emerging between the files omitted, i.e clipping paths, colour profiles, file types.
The worst thing is that it happens randomly on documents created fresh in InDesign CS4 as well so I'm having trouble trying to pinpoint where the problem stems from.
This is driving people crazy, and I can see that it's going to be a major pain for numerous design agencies. I hope Adobe sorts this out quick or it's back to CS3 for most of us who charge for our time. I guess I can always send Adobe the bill for the time spent manually collecting all files for a job!!
Please no obvious suggestions on preflight settings as it's happening to people with twenty plus experience in the business.
    Thanks for reading the post.

    Hi JAD the mad,
we have the same problem on our machines here at work regarding the randomness of the Indesign CS4 package function collecting links.
The office has recently upgraded to all new Power Mac G5's with Mac OS X Version 10.5.6. 2x2.8Ghz 4GB RAM, a new server and all new Adobe CS4 packages.
Another user on the forum also has the same problem he said:
    nguyen khanh duy - 7:40am Nov 23, 08 PST (#31 of 67)
I have a problems with my document created with Adobe Indesign CS4.
I can not package the file with its links into a folder. Sometimes a few files are collected, but when I convert all the images into CMYK color space, none of them were collected.
My documents contains 70 links and 140 pages.
So when I need to collect links, I convert the document into CS3 INX file and use Indesign CS3 to collect the links.
I've tried with other document with hundreds of links and all or them are 100 pages. All the links were collected. (offcourse with CS4)
Please help me. Thank you very much
    As for our specific problem,
We have files which do not package all the links properly. Indesign only packages a random amount of the links into the new folder. There seems to be no consistency with regard to file type, size, colour profile or location. The pre-flight shows a green light and this error seems to occur randomly. It is very annoying if we are working on the local hard drive and have links there and on the server and then want to package everything to upload to the server or to work on another computer. We have to find all the links and copy them individually to a new folder.
Saving as with a new file name does not help. Also copying all links to a new folder from the links pallet does not copy all the links. The error is disconcerting due to it's seemingly random occurrence. We have tried all the simple solutions and it seems very much like a bug in the software.
Does anyone else share this problem? It would be great to hear any suggestions or similar stories.
    Regards
    Steve

  • Indesign CS4 and MathML

    Hi all,
The new relased version of Indesign CS4 is capable of handling MathML.
    Is Indesign CS4 support MathML.
    Kavya

I do like some of the MathMagic features, so I'm going to give the new trial a shot tomorrow, but it won't export InDesign files to MathML. InDesign exports every linked image as a graphic, so all eps images get converted to jpg (and metadata is not carried over, as best as I can tell).
If you're exporting MathML look into MathDAISY/MathType. It only works with Word in Windows, but it will export the full XML. I can't find anything else that will do it better without a whole lot of manual coding. http://www.dessci.com/en/products/mathdaisy/
It means managing two workflows, but that seems to be the only way currently.

  • InDesign CS4  Varying page sizes one spread

Is there a way to create a spread using two different page widths in inDesign CS4?
Looking to make a doc for a gatefold where one panel (page) width would be a 1/4" shorter.  Is this possible to do in one document so I can print as spread and it will print as one page or do I need to make separate documents and put spec together by hand?

    Hi,
Sorry to say that variable page widths are not available in InDesign CS4, they were introduced in CS5. The work around before CS5 was to make one page that was the combined width of both pages and manually add in guides and your own fold marks.

  • Indesign CS4 (mac) crashing on launch

    Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help me.
I've recently upgraded my operating system (tiger > snow leopard). Before doing this I uninstalled CS4 fully and after the upgrade reinstalled it again. Photoshop and Acrobat pro both work fine (I don't use illustrator so haven't installed it). Indesign however crashes as soon as it starts to load up: it bounces for around 10sec on the dashboard and then crashes.
Here is the crash report: http://pastebin.com/3iX0uy7U
I've already tried several of the options for getting it to work. Have checked and mended my fonts, verified and repaired disk permissions, moved the indesign permissions files.
I ran an update since installation when it wouldn't load up, so am now running 6.0.6 Indesign CS4.
    Thanks,
    Jess

Quit InDesign if it is already running. Then clean the InDesign cache folder manually by moving the en_US folder from the following location: Macintosh HD/Users/<username>/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/Version 6.0/. Drag the en_US folder to the desktop and relaunch InDesign. Paste a screenshot of the Sharing and Permissions panel by expanding it within the Get Info panel for the following folder:
    /Applications/Adobe InDesign CS4/
    Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe/
    Macintosh HD/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/
    Macintosh HD/Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.InDesign.plist.
    Macintosh HD/Users/<username>/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign
    Macintosh HD/Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign
    Macintosh HD/Users/<username>/Library/Saved Application State/com.adobe.InDesign.savedState
All the above folders and files should have read and write permissions for Admin and your current account.

  • InDesign CS4 Printing help

    Hello,
I realize that "two-sided" copying isn't a function of InDesign however, after I installed CS4, i have lost the ability to do a "two-sided" print. I tried to adjust the settings in my print dialogue boxes but that did nothing either.
Can anyone give help or tips? I duplex a lot and I need to figure this out!
    Thanks,

I upgraded to InDesign CS4 a month or so ago.  I'm using a 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, Mac OS X 10.5.7, and having trouble printing to two different printers.  I had a margin issue with an HP Color Laser 5550, where I never had one before.  Then today, I discovered that I could not duplex print to a HP Laser 3005, again this was never a problem with CS3.
So needless to say this thread was required reading for me.
Of course, the pdf work-around worked.  But, I wanted to get to the bottom of this.  Well, putting together info from a couple of different posts, I think I've discovered the duplexing problem (at least).
In the past, I have religiously used the Page Setup tab in the printer window to set paper size, and when I did so the Set-up Paper Size would automatically show "Defined by Driver."
Well, now, one can follow the same process (setting the paper size in the driver via Page Setup), and when one returns to the main printing menu, the Set-up Paper Size "window" will not have changed, in other words, it will not say "Defined by Driver" but rather "Letter" or "Legal."  When I manually changed the setting to "Defined by Driver," lo and behold, I could duplex!
So the theory espoused above about whether the printer or InDesign was controlling the printer does seem to be the key issue.  If you're using garden-variety desktop printers, you're most likely emulating Postscript, and the InDesign is expecting Postscript accuracy and not finding it.
    Hope this helps.
