InDesign CS4 - Paragraph Style - Justification not applying

Hello,
I am in college and Indesign is the software we use for our projects. The version we have is CS4. This is the second project where I've had an issue with the justification. I can use the justification icons at the top to move the text where I want it after applying the paragraph style, but this causes the little override + to show up and that's not allowed. My instructor says we should use the style itself. I'm happy to do that and have found the justification area in the paragraph style setup, however, no matter what justification I specify (with the text highlighted and preview enabled), the text does not move. I've also set it, applied it then gotten back to the document just in case it was a preview-only error but it still doesn't change.
Do I need to justify everything THEN apply the paragraph style to get around this? If the justify option in the paragraph style settings doesn't actually move the text, what is it's intended purpose?

Do you mean this justification tab?
If so, I think it's purpose is to set the behavior of how single-word paragraphs are displayed when full justification is applied. In the previous screen shot, the third line of the paragraph is a single word (Obitatur), and all of the text is set to Full Justify (if you hover your cursor over the justification icons at the top of the screen, it's the one that reads: Justify all lines). Here, you can see that all of the letters are justified across the text frame, because Single Word Justification is set to Full Justify. Here are a few other examples:

Clicking a Paragraph Style Does Not Apply Style to Text

I just switched from a PC to a brand new MacBook Pro (OSX Lion 10.7), and I bought InDesign CS5.5. I have been using CS4 on a PC for a couple of years and had no issues. For some reason, I cannot apply Paragraph Styles by placing my cursor in the text and clicking the Paragraph style. It highlights the clicked style for a moment, and then de-highlights all the styles, but does not apply any changes. The only way I can apply a Paragraph Style right now is by right clicking the style and selecting "Apply..." from the drop down menu. It's very puzzling. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this. I also have Microsoft Office: Mac 2011 installed on the laptop if that makes a difference to anyone. Any help would be greatly appreciated, since I typeset and edit for my living, and this problem is slowing me down a bit.

Neither. Let's say I click into a paragraph. The current style will be highlighted. If I click on another style (or even attempt to re-apply the same style by clicking on it in the styles pane), it momentarily highlights the new style, then flashes a little bar underneath (like the one that shows up if I were to try to re-organize the styles list by dragging a style to a different pace in the styles list), then all the styles become unselected, but no changes have been applied to the paragraph in question. Very definitely not normal. It is almost as if the pane assumes that I am attempting to drag the style even when I am merely clicking on it. Very weird.

I was also thinking the ability to apply my mail rules to them would further their efficiency. Does anyone know if this is possible?

In the preferences menu, under "composing" There is an option for "Create Notes & To Do's in:" With the options being "On My Mac" and "[email protected]".
I did not have this set properly, and changing it meant that selecting text in a note and making a to do gave me the option of putting it in my local calendars.
However, when I select text from an e-mail it still puts it in my "[email protected]" calendar.
Partial fix --> Still not exactly what I want to see.

CS4 paragraph styles indentation problem

CS4 paragraph styles indentation problem: indentation specifics abruptly APPEAR differently but read the same (in the paragraph style pallet) from page 5 to 6 and beyond. (There is no character style applied to any of the text, and no change to the page margins. The same Master page is applied to all.) On page 5 when I pull the text box down, the type is indented correctly, but when I flow it to page 6, it changes to a different indentation and looks wrong for the style.

Here it is with the text block on page 5 pulled down to reveal correct indentation formatting, but still off on page 6.

ation" when launching afterwards. The support technician told me to first delete with the uninstall Adobe InDesign CS4, InDesign.
Following this I am told to run the CS4 Cleanup Utility. I restart the computer each and every time after running each of the utili
ties. Now I am told to install InDesign as a trial version from the DVD and after installation to go ahead & enter the serial numbe

In the application folder there is a folder 'Adobe InDesign CS4' within which there is just the application file. I would expect there should be more file there??
I've un-installed and installed again - still the same.
Even downloaded the dmg again and done thwe whole thing over again.

I'm having exactly the same problem with InDesign from CS4 Design Standard (Photoshop and Illustrator both work), and I don't know what to do. I've called up the Adobe support line five times, and received five different answers, none of which have worked (and on three other occasions, my call was dropped, once after an hour on hold).
One of the Adobe tech support people said to me "None of CS4 works with either 10.5.8 or Snow Leopard. We will issue a patch for that soon" - which directly contradicts what Adobe itself says on this site. I also went to see a Mac Genius, who couldn't help either.
I have a 2GHz Macbook with 2GB RAM running 10.5.8. I've run the uninstall, and the Adobe Clean Script, I've repaired permissions on my drive (which isn't case sensitive), restarted, reinstalled, tried installing on an external drive and then tried downloading the trial, in case it's the install CD - nothing works.
Any suggestions, anyone? Might there be a problem with my library that is stopping the install? Something else?? I bought CS4 for InDesign primarily, this is not good.

I copied it from the Windows XP Fonts folder into the InDesign Font folder, which, for starters, was empty (even though when I open the InDesign application its inherent fonts are available). I have gone to online Help and tried different things, but I still cannot get Papyrus Bold when I open my file.
     Where are the InDesign fonts stored, if not in the InDesign Fonts folder?
     How can I make the fonts that are in my Windows XP to be available in InDesign?

     Thanks for your quick reply.
     I don’t see why there should be a problem with the Papyrus font I copied from Windows, since it works just fine in Word.
It is listed in the Windows XP/Fonts folder as Open Type, although in brackets beneath it has “True Type.”
     Note: the Adobe InDesign Fonts folder was empty when I first viewed it (except for my attempted copies of Papyrus and a couple of Lucidas). Where are the inherent InDesign fonts stored, if not there?

InDesign Paragraph Style won't apply / change

Im hoping someone might be able to help me troubleshoot an InDesign question. Im a beginner-to-intermediate user.
I am unable to apply my Paragraph Style to a number of my text boxes. I have tried holding Opt/Alt while choosing the PS with no luck. I have also checked for local overrides and character styles, and there appear to be none. The fly-out menu from the Paragraph Styles menu is almost all greyed-out, so it won't let me select the Clear Overrides option.
However, when I double-click the text box to go into the frame, I am able to select the text directly and then apply the paragraph style to it directly inside the frame. This seems weird; Im hoping there's a way that I can just select the frames normally and apply a paragraph style as usual.
The text came from a Word document that was flowed into each chapter, if that gives any help.

P Spier, thank you very much. What is the work around then to achieve this? Simply selecting all the text in all of the threaded frames and applying the Paragraph Style directly to them? Is it possible to select all of the threaded frames at the same time and apply the Paragraph Style to it? Advice for best method of practice is much appreciated.

InDesign CS5.5 Style sheets not working properly

I'm checking out a trial version of InDesign CS5.5 and am creating some paragraph style sheets that don't seem to be working. When assigning the latest style I've created to a paragraph, it changes the color I've spec'd, but not the typeface. I open up the style to make sure I've selected the typeface, and it's in order. It just won't style the paragraph with it. What might be going on?

to force a paragraph style with all defined attributes to a paragraph regardless of local formatting and applied character styles, hold the "alt" + "shift" keys when applying the paragraph style.
If you want to preserve character styles and overwrite local formatting, then hold the "alt" key when applying the paragraph style.

Imported paragraph styles are not the same as in original document

I am using InDesign CC 9.2 x64
I have document with a whole series of master pages and paragraph styles. I wanted to move these into a blank document, along with a few pages from the original document.
In the new document I loaded master pages and paragraph styles and all seemed to go fine. I moved a few pages into the document and the paragraph styles don't seem to come up the same. There seems to be larger line spacing than in the original document, but I can't find what the problem is,
This is really annoying, as the whole point of paragraph styles is that they assure consistency!
Any ideas??

Another potential problem is that when you move things into a new document that has attributes like styles or master pages with the same names, but different definitions. The definitions in the receiving document will be used. This can show up on styles based on [Basic Paragraph] where the definition of [Basic Paragraph] does not match, too.

Paragraph styles in notes mode

This might sound like a small problem, but it's driving me crazy. Somehow, somewhere, the InCopy files I am working on have a "default" setting in notes mode so that notes always appear as ALL CAPS and boldface. This is true for notes added by the comp that are already in the file when I receive it and for notes that I have added myself.
Considering all contact I have with the comp is via notes in the file, I don't want to continue to use this paragraph style (since in emails, this would be equivalent to "shouting"). I have been applying a "basic" paragraph style using the paragraph style palette to all of my new notes or any responses I add to existing notes, but it's somewhat time consuming to do that! Is there a way to change this globally in the file? I've looked in every palette, menu, Edit>Preferences, etc., and I can't seem to find anything helpful in the application or in the InCopy online knowledgebase files.

The notes that comp added to the file are in boldface/all caps. If I want to edit the note (adding a reply, for example), I type in my reply. Then I select the text of the note.
Then I open up the "Paragraph Styles" palette.
Then I click on the paragraph style [basic paragraph].
The selected text in the note is then formatted in roman font, not all caps.

How to find different styles from Indesign CS4 Grap style?*

I would like to know how to find two different character style from a single grap command in Indesign CS4.
For instance, A word having bold/italic character style following with punctuation having normal/none character style.

With GREP styles you can search text only, not formatting.

AS: InDesign CS4: Missing links do not show path anymore?

Hiya! Preparing to move to InDesign CS4, and opened a document where the links were missing. In CS2 with AS you could still get the old path to where the link was pointed to, but now if the link is missing AS returns "". ?? I can still get the file name, but that is fairly useless..
I know the path is still retained somewhere, because the link pallet UI in InDesign shows path, and the path is there...
Anyone have any ideas?

TOC Paragraph Style will not update!

Ok, this one is getting wearing. I have put a TOC into my thesis and successfully reformatted TOC 1 to be Tiered Numbered (Tier 1).
However, when i try to reformat TOC 2 to Tiered Number (Tier 2) it does it but it will not stay permanent (And i dont always get the option to Redefine Style from Selection, it seems like it does when it wants to). If i do the reformat of the paragraph style to Tiered Number (Tier 2), then save, then close & reopen, TOC 2 is back to Tier 1 not Tier 2 again. Same if i make the change then deselect the use of TOC 2 and reselect, it returns to Tier 1. Very irritating. Anyone any ideas?

I never faced this behavior but I know that the TOC style Headings are predefined.
Maybe it would be safer to create new ones, not redefine the original ones.

[InDesign CS4] - Spell() function does not get called in CHLinguistic Sample

Hi,
I am investigating CHLinguistic Sample plug-in on Windows InDesign CS4. I noted that in InDesign CS4 a new function is added FindError.
I always get call to function FindError() but I don't get calls to other functions like Spell(), IsCorrectGrammer().
Has Adobe changed something in InDesign CS4.
Any help will be appreciated.

I have SDK Build Verison 352 September 2008. With this SDK it has CHLinguistic sample. It has the following info in readme file under Known Issues -
The CHLinguistic sample does not dynamically redraw misspelled
words after adding them to the user dictionary.
I have the old SDK. You have SDK Build Version 352 October 2008, so you must be correct.
I will download the latest SDK and post my results on the forum.
