Indesign CS4 Very Slow - can move objects easily anymore!

We are running CS4 - Even the most simple files are difficult open.  When opened, it is hard to move objects or type any characters. All we get is the Apple pinwheel.  We are running OS x 10.5 with 4 GB of memory.  We dont know what to do-please advise.

I use CS4, mostly InDesign and Photoshop. I recently upgraded my iMac from 1 GB to 3GB of RAM, and everything was awesomely fast. CS4 worked well. Then I updated my system from 10.6.1 to 10.6.2, and immediately both InDesign & Photoshop developed a pause approx. every 5 seconds. No matter what I’m doing within either program, no matter how large or small the file, no matter how many or few applications I have open, I still get the very same beachball-spinning pause with every little thing I try to do, always. It’s very frustrating, I am having a lot of trouble getting any work done. The performance is way worse with 3 GB RAM than it was with just 1!
I am not having this problem with the rest of my applications within my system, such as Mail and Safari, and I haven't really noticed it with Acrobat. It does seem that the update caused this with CS4. I've tried a couple of things, such as zapping the PRAM and closing a bunch of fonts but nothing has made the slightest difference.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • InDesign CS4 very slow on a Mac

    Hello!
I'm using ID CS4 on an iMac with 2,4 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM. I'm writing my thesis in InDesign, so I have basically one big textframe per chapter in which all the text goes. My problem is, that InDesign is getting really slow when I type text, also in the story editor. There is a delay of around 3 seconds between typing and the appearance of the word in the document. During this delay, the CPU usage raises to almost 100 percent. I circumvent this problem by writing in a plain text editor and C&P it into InDesign, but since I have to make corrections here and there, it really drives me nuts.
Are there any means of speeding this up?
    Thank You very much!
    Till

    Peter:
I have tried and tried to post on the forums again. Signed in with 2 different names (don't ask!) and still can't get a new topic button. Here is my issue:
I have a large scale file (several) that I'm working with. It is 60" x 210". The file made in ID is fine, but I am having a hard time making a proofing PDF. Tried Distilling, directly from the app (export), and making them into eps and opening them in Acrobat to create a 4 page file. All ways cropped the files.
Do you by chance have a tip??? Please?!!
And I figured out my loading of the application problem. It was so strange and many steps:
    1. Install software
    2. If you get a "licesnse expired" notice the...
    3. Change the date on your computer to Dec. 20, 2008 (it's stated differently in the Adobe info, but the phone support stated this date).
    4. Launch the app or any of the CS apps if you've loaded more.
    5. Go to HELP> Deactivate>Erase my serial number.
    6. Close the program.
    7. Open each application.
    7. Change the date back to today's date on your computer.
    8. The products should all launch correctly!

  • CS6 indesign & illustrator very slow in processing

since i installed CS6, both illustrator and indesign work extremely slow when moving objects, fonts etc.
the documents are not big, just one spread full of text and the programm takes too long to process the action.
working in CS5.5 was always fine but CS6 is just so slow that work has become difficult.
i didn't change anything in fontexplorer nor did i change anything with my RAM.
and idea what i can do to make CS6 work better and more efficient?
    thanks!

RE: "P.S. I  found it aggravating that I couldn't copy and paste text  here, it wanted me to insert as a link or an image, how do you insert plain  text?"
I take it you tried using the "right click" menu?   That doesn't seem to work, as you noted, but, you should be able to paste text by pressing your CTRL key  and while holding it down, press the "V" letter  key.
    CTRL + C = COPY
    CTRL + X = CUT
    CTRL + V = PASTE

  • CS4 very slow vs. CS3

I have been doing large layouts in photoshop for years for the film and advertising industry.  I have recently started using cs4 and found it to be pretty much unusable when working with large layered files.  I have followed several tutorials on increasing and optimizing speed, turning off acceleration, etc.  I have checked my graphic card drivers and it is still a dinosaur compared to cs3 on my Nehalem macpro.  I have also reproduced the same results on my older Harpertown macpro.  Redraw, tweaking curves and drawing with the lasso are all very slow.  I have two friends who have the same experience and downgraded back to cs3. I have one friend who claims it works fine on his xp64 system.
Are there any artists who really use this program on mac for serious work? -or have most people abandoned it and gone back to cs3?  I have found cs4 to be pretty much unusable.
BTW, can somebody please update the curves tool???  It would be nice to zoom, have independent bezier handles, and also be able to invert curves like many other programs have been able to do for years.  It is quite silly that photoshop has one of the most primitive curve tools in the industry.

If you are saying CS4 doesnt support either of those cards that is rediculous [sic].
Ridiculous is not knowing how to spell ridiculous.
Hey, I'm just trying to help.
I don't see any "GT 120" on the list.  The 8800GS and 8800GT are on the list, both with 512MB of VRAM.
I hope you're talking about two different machines.  Photoshop does not support more than one card on a given machine, and two different video cards on the same machine spells crashville.
Apple's support for multiple or dual graphics cards seems to be very poor.  Many users with two cards report all kinds of trouble.

by Adobe before release of Photoshop CS4. They are listed by operating

    testing.
Mac OS graphics display cards We tested the below cards on Mac OS 10.5.4 and 10.4.11.
The following cards were tested only on Mac OS 10.5.4: 8800GT, iMac 8800 GS, and 8600M.
MACTEL iMac 8800 GS 512 MB
          MACTEL 8800 GT 512 MB

          PPC nVidia 7800 256MB

          17" MACTEL iMac x1600 128MB
          Macbook Air intel GMA X3100
    Q. Why can't Photoshop take advantage of more than one display card?
           A. When you move an image window between two monitors that are each on a separate display card, the GPU attached to the second monitor does not have access to the data necessary to accelerate drawing. The SLI and Crossfire technologies that use more than one GPU to speed up full-screen games will not work with Photoshop, because their use is limited by design to accelerate only full-screen games.

Re: OpenGL & 3 or more monitors
    Paul,
Dual video cards = crashes in all cases.
Matching Dual Video Cards = few occasional crashes.
Non-matching video cards = crashes consistently
I really don't think the GL features factor into it that much. It's the Apple video drivers. The OS simply is not well-designed for multiple video cards in a video-intense application. As I've posted, I run dual 8800 cards and still have about 2 crashes an 8 hour day. Crashes generally occur when doing the most rudimentary things, like dragging a layer between two documents. I simply save more often. The 11.0.1 update helped a bit, but not completely. And CS3 never crashed with dual 7300s installed.

  • CS4 very slow image linking.

We are having a efficiency issues with CS4.
We have a large IDML document with 80 pages and 1800 images. Each image is about 24kb jpg.
If we open the document and InDesign can find images, it will take hours to open the document. And it is very annoying that InDesign stops responding and doesn't show even a progressbar while opening the document.
If we open the document and InDesign cannot find images, it will open the document in few minutes. Then if we fix the location of images and say "Update all links" or "Relink" broken links, InDesign will start fetching the images but it again takes hours..
It doesn't matter if the images are on the server or local machine.
If we update the links in smaller chunks, it will take a few minutes to update all the links. Little more testing shows that the time the InDesign takes to fetch the images increases exponentially when the amount of images increases. That seems a bug to me.
I'm not sure what InDesign is doing when it fetches images but I know it becomes way too slow and it propably does too much.
Is this fixed in CS5? And if not, please fix this.
We are running CS4 InDesign 6.0.6 in Mac OSX 10.5.8 in Mac pro (2.66GHz with 8Gb memory)

    Hello,
    I have a strange problem.
Some of my images are VERY slow to load,
    scale... (any image operation).
    I have those 2 images :
    http://193.252.5.30/tmp/cat1.jpg (25Ko : 295x551
    pixels)
    http://193.252.5.30/tmp/cat2.jpg (24Ko : 295x551
    pixels)
I wrote a little program which load and scale the
    image.
    Here is the result :
    cat1.jpg
Time to load image : 171 ms.
Time to scale image : 157 ms.
    cat2.jpg
Time to load image : 1157 ms.
Time to scale image : 2578 ms.How can this huge difference explained ?
Thanks for your help.Using the Netbeans profiler, I can see that for some reason, the cat2.jpg image is resulting in a hot spot where the scale() method ends up performing a color conversion via ColorConvertOp. Placing a debugger breakpoint on this call and debugging the code using cat1.jpg, the method is never called. So, there is something different about the color models of the two images, or there is a bug in the image reading code that is misinterpreting the image data.

  • CS4 very slow to open documents + slow in general

Ever since our design studio upgraded to InDesign CS4, some of our machines are now VERY slow to open documents (it takes documents approx. 7–13 times longer to open). Also, just using InDesign seems much slower than CS3 (like dragging things, typing, etc.).
The funny thing is this problem only seems to affect our designers who have PowerPC G5 Macs — not the ones with Intel Macs. I realise CS4 will be optimised for Intel machines, but surely it shouldn't be this much slower on G5s?
Anyone have any idea what the problem might be?
    Lee

Sorry, I really should have given more specs.
All our machines use Leopard (OS v10.5.8)
    Other specs:
    Machines with the problem:
    1.8GHz PowerPC G5
    3 or 4 GB RAM
    Geforce FX 5200
Machines that don't have the problem:
    2 x 2GHz Dual core Intel Xeon
    5 GB RAM
    Geforce 7300 GT
I don't think this problem can simply be put down to speed/processor power, because I can open documents fine if I use CS3 (which is still installed) and it takes about 8 seconds. Then I try opening the same document in CS4 and it takes about 2 minutes to open. Documents have never taken this long to open before for us, and InDesign also seems slower to use than before (not excessively slower, but noticably slower).

  • Indesign CS4 really slow with CMYK images

Can anyone help me solve this? InDesign CS4 document with a few pages, and approx 24 images on a page. With CMYK images imported the rendering and re-rending is very sluggish. The Processes shows 99% usage for InDesign. Makes it almost impossible to work on a document.
    Any ideas to fix this?
    I'm using an 27" iMac with 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 - Memory: 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Doesn't surprise me. I find getting help in Adobe forums/support/community very confusing to find my way around.

  • CS4 very slow

I am getting lots of problems with CS4, some of which have been covered in separate topics on this forum. In the main, it seems to me that there is a real problem with CS4 processing relatively small amounts of data. The difficulties I am experiencing are:
    1. Text tool very slow. Just typing a few letters sees my CPU usage shoot to 50%. There is a lag of about a second between typing the letters and their appearance on the screen.
    2. Pen tool very slow with significant lag when using the mouse and CPU again shoots to 50%, even for a short line. If I use the tablet (Trust) it sometimes works, but suffers the same lag as the mouse when it does. Most of the time, though, I just get a faint straight line between the start and end point. This morning I got the same straight line symptom on the mouse!
    3. Screen redraw can be painfully slow and blocky, but this fault is really sporadic
    4. There is no apparent difference whether I have GPU active or not. However, I have just had a strange message. When GPU was disabled I restarted CS4 and got the message that there was a problem with the display driver, and PS was therefore disabling GPU enhancements! After that, the pen worked fine, and the mouse too, but then the mouse started losing curves.
I experience none of these problems when I run CS.
My video card driver is up to date. The trust tablet driver is the latest, but I really do not think this is the issue, as the drawing problem also affects the mouse.
System spec - XP with SP3, AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+, 2GB RAM, nVidia Geforce 7600GT, Program on Raptor 70GB, Scratch on separate 70GB Raptor

I updated the video driver just after I upgraded to CS4, and I have checked today that it is still the latest.
The really weird thing is that the problems are not constant. Most of the time they are there, the rest of the time it's OK. When there is a problem, it's not all of them either.
I have now noticed that my pen works just after I open PS. However, if I change to drawing with the mouse, or change to another tool, then I just get the faint straight lines as in 2 above. I have contacted the maker to see if they can fix the driver.
I noticed that when I ran slide show the temp on the video card went very high, so I have ramped up the fan in case the temp is causing the card to throttle on me. Would this be likely?
However, I still don't understand why I am getting the message that the GPU enhancements are being cut when GPU is not enabled anyway.

    Hy to all,
i work with indesign CS3 on MAC with OS 10.6.4.
I have some ai-Files in Textlines. If i copy and paste them to other Textframes it is very very slow and the spinning weel is showing.
I know that i don´t have these problems on OS 10.5.8, so maybe it is a problem in my new system.
Did someone could tell me, how i can fix this problem?

  • InDesign CS4 / CS5 missing JavaScript Socket() object?

    If I do
    var mySocketObject = new Socket();
    socket.open("mywebsite.com:80", "BINARY")
in Photoshop, it creates a socket object called mySocketObject, which is not null and opens the socket correctly.
If I do the same thing in InDesign CS5, the same command fails.
I know this works in InDesign CS3, so what does one need to do to make Socket() work in InDesign CS4/5?

Adobe's own Javascript Tools Guide is your friend for snippets like these.
This is from the CS4 guide, but it should work for CS5 as well:
    reply = "";
conn = new Socket; // access Adobe’s home page
    if (conn.open ("www.adobe.com:80"))
// send a HTTP GET request
    conn.write ("GET /index.html HTTP/1.0\n\n");
// and read the server’s reply
    reply = conn.read(999999);
    conn.close();
