Indesign CS4 won't open or create new files. Why???

I'm using Indesign CS4 and all of a sudden it won't open old files or creat new ones. I've restarted
my machine and program and it still won't do anything. Any ideas?

What sort of recent changes have you made on the system?
What happens when you try to open files or create new ones? What OS? IS ID patched to 6.0.6?
Have you tried trashing the prefs? See Replace Your Preferences

Photoshop CS6 cannot open or create new file.  This happened after running CCleaner

Hi, I've been asked to join this discussion. CCleaner is a nice tool, but if you used the Registry Cleaner that came with it, it might have done something to Photoshop's registry entries. There is that danger in using them.
One thing CCleaner does is leave a backup of the registry, or you can use Windows System Restore to go to that point before you ran the Cleaner. Let's go with System Restore. Review the instructions.
    System Restore - Microsoft Windows
If you suspect a virus, I'd like to direct you here http://bleepingcomputer.com/
That would be the "Am I infected?" forum.
They have the tools, you run them, and copy and paste the logs that are generated. They are very good at this, but it is super important you follow directions and don't leave until the process is completed.

  • Shared Content InDesign Plugin for InDesign CS4 won't open file

Yesterday I discontinued using Adobe CC and went back to using my Adobe InDesign CS4.  CS4 is working OK but there is ONE file that won't open.  I get the message "Shared Content InDesign Plugin is currently not available on your system".  The file will not open. Is there a workaround or how do I get the required plugin?

You get that error when the file was saved in CS5 or later. You can find out the version using the script at Adobe Forums: [Ann] Identify Your InDesign File.
You'll need to export the file to .idml from the newer version to be able to open it in CS4. This is something I normally offer to do, but I'm not available for at least a week, so perhaps one of our other regulars can step up and volunteer.

  • InDesign CS4 won't open at all!   I'm doomed!

What happened? I've been using InDesign CS4 (bought the master collection) since March on my brand new MacBook Pro (2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB 1067 Mhz DDR3) just fine...the other adobe updater ran and now..nothing. I click on the app and nothing happens. Notning at all. No dialog box, no nothing. I rebooted my Mac and now my InDesign files that were on my desktop don't even have the purple InDesign thumbs/icons anymore. I see in my InDesign folder that the app is there (304MB) and but now there's another InDesignCS4 app (112mb) yet it doesn't have the purple folder icon...it looks more like a text edit doc or an incomplete file or something.
I tried adobe updater again, to see if was an incomplete update, and it shows no updates for InDesign. Some other apps don't open anymore either, like After Effects, but Photoshop Extended, and Flash do open up.
What's going on!? I have a big meeting tomoorow and I'm up a creek without InDesign.
Again, all was fine two days ago. The updater ran on the 16th...
    Please help!
    Thanks,
    Derrick

    Thanks Steve,
that link you gave me says 'Page no longer available. "
I installed this at work, and the disks are are there, so I was trying to get it up and running before the AM.
A couple of things I've found:
    1. A while back, I shortened the name of the app to InDesign CS4 (as opposed to "Adobe InDesign CS4" I took off the "Adobe" in front of it so it would be shorter in the dock.) I'm wondering if the updater was looking for the exact match, which is whay I got a SECOND "Adobe InDesign CS4" app in my folder that was only 114mb as oppsed to the full 300mb...Funny, I did that same thing with After Effects (removed the "Adobe" in front of the name) and it's doing the same thing (not supported). All other apps in the Master Collection that might have been updated two days ago are fine. Do you think the updater is that picky, and it installed the update as a seperate, unusable file? I trashed the smaller, newer (the one I got when I updated) Adobe InDesign CS4 in hopes that the old full app would open up as it did before and re-update. That's when I got the "not supported" message.
Before I trashed the "smaller" app, nothing was happening at all when I tried to lauch either. At least now I'm getting the "Not supported" thing.
    2. I found a crash report in my app support folder:
    bplist00Ó      TPathZPerAppACRRTDate_ j/Users/dogilvie/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Adobe InDesign CS4_2009-06-18-002600_Derricks-MacBook-Pro.crashÒ    WOSBuildXVersionsT9J61Ñ  Y??? (???)Ñ ]appCrashCount  3A¯Óò°¶"    $‘–ž§¬¯¹¼ÊÌ   Õ
    does that make any sense?
any hel[p would be greatly appreciated.

  • Photoshop won't open or create new documents, works breifly after full windows restart.

    Hi everyone,
I am having an issues with photoshop becoming unresponsive. After about 10 minutes Photoshop will not open or create a document.
I've spent hours trying to fix this with no results. I've spent time on Nvidia's forums and tried downgrading the driver back to 275.33 with the same results. I've disabled opengl in photoshop with the same results. This error occurs on both CS5 and CS6 versions of photoshop. I've tried reinstalling photoshop (not removing and reinstalling, just reinstalling).
I can't tell if it's a photoshop issue or a Nvidia issue. I've read countless threads on this forum and can't find any help. Please help.
I've made this video to show you the issues. Thank you for your help

    Hi,
I'm having the same trouble as OP: Photoshop opens but will not create a new document or open an existing one. In addition to that, I've noticed that if you hammer on ctrl+n enough times and manage to actually get a document open, PS won't save it but will go through the motions of doing so.
There have been quite a few reports of this issue now over the last year or so and they seem specific to PS CS5 and up. They all remain unresolved. This is actually an easily searchable issue now.

I'm currently working on a big project across the suite and all the other Adobe applications are running fine.
I have tried all the suggested fixes with no result. One other issue that did become apparent, was re-installing PS. After uninstallation, the Adobe installer kept encountering "Exit Code 7" when trying to reinstall PS. The only way around this in the end seemed to be removing all Adobe software from the system and starting again. The original issue remains.
Finally, it's worth mentioning that PS CS5 has worked without any problems on this system for just under a year now. I haven't made any drastic changes to the system so I'm completely baffled as to why this is happening.
Hope this post goes some way to the issue being acknowledged and rectified.

  • InDesign CS4 fails to open PageMaker 6.5 files correctly

After upgrading to InDesign CS4 this week, I attempted to open a PageMaker 6.5 file. It opened, but the pages were out of sequence. PageMaker 6.5 pages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc., opened in InDesign CS4 as pages 1, 3, 2, 5, 4, etc.
I purchased InDesign CS4 last week for the sole purpose of working on two books I created in PageMaker 6.5. For me, at present InDesign CS4 is useless. I hope Adobe provides a fix soon.
Also the upgrade rejected my PageMaker 6.5 serial number, I tried all the fixes at the Adobe website, finally after half an hour on the phone I was given a challenge/response code which then launched InDesign. If I need to reinstall InDesign, I'll have to go through the challenge response process again, i.e. another long wait on the support line.
I'm using OS 10.5.5 on the newest, unibody PowerBook Pro.

    From the help files:
    Flow text semi-automatically
With a loaded text icon, Alt-click (Windows) or Option-click (Mac OS) a page or frame.
The text flows one column at a time, as in manual flow, but the loaded text icon automatically reloads after each column is placed.
    Flow text automatically
With the loaded text icon displayed, hold down Shift as you do one of the following:
Click the loaded text icon in a column to create a frame the width of that column. InDesign creates new text frames and new document pages until all text is added to the document.
Click inside a text frame that is based on a master text frame. The text autoflows into the document page frame and generates new pages as needed, using the master frames attributes. (See About masters, stacking order, and layers.)
Flow text automatically without adding pages
With a loaded text icon, hold down Shift+Alt (Windows) or Shift+Option (Mac OS).

  • Illustrator CC(2014) does not open or create new file in Window 8.1 Pro

My illustrator can launch but once I tried to create a new file it would freeze and will not respond anymore.
I also tried to open existing illustrator files it just create a blank white illustrator window and does not respond afterwards as well.
I tried to reinstall the illustrator for times to fix to issue but it doesnt work.
All the other applications (photoshop/indesign...) work perfectly, but obviously there is a bug in illustrator...
Have any other people experienced similar issue and know how to fix it??

Did you uninstall then used the Cleaner tool before reinstalling?
Is a printer connected? Is the driver up to date? Printer turned on?
Do you have any third party plugins installed?
    A graphic tablet?
    Any other hardware?

Have you already tried setting up a new user account (Admin) and launching from that one?

  • My copy of Adobe InDesign cs4 will not open a regular idml file.

I opened my document, and all it said was "cannot open the file "Tightsketch_charrette2.idml". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application" I tried opening other idmls that I knew were not corrupted and I recieved the same message. I checked the plugins, they are all enabled.  I quit all other programs, no luck.  I restarted the macbook, no luck again.  Could I recieve some help?  My Indesign cs4 is fully updated and Im having all these problems.

I have good news, and bad news.
The good news is that the file opens correctly here in both CS5.5 and CS4. The bad news is that means there's a problem with your CS4.
I would start out by trashing your preferences. It's fast, easy to do, and not overly destructive, and if you are lucky it will even solve the problem, but I wouldn't put the odds of success at more than 50/50. See Replace Your Preferences
Do you have a Time Machine backup? If you do, the next thing I would try is restoring the InDesign application folder from a time before the problem started.
If all else fails, it's probably time to bite the bullet and break out the installer. First try running a "repair" install on top of what's there. If that, too, fails, then I would uninstall CS4, run the CS5 clean tool (which can also clean up CS4 -- see Resolve installation problems with CS5 Cleaner Tool), then restart the computer and reinstall. If you have any customized stuff you should make copies of things like shorcut sets and workspaces that you can put back as explained in the thread on resetting the prefs.

  • Illustrator crashes on open or create new file

Illustrator CS4 (on Mac 10.5.8) crashes every time I try to create a new file or open an existing AI file.
I've read a number of threads on here, related to similar problems, and did the following (in this order):
deleted the font cache  --> didn't help
resolved duplicate fonts  --> didn't help
deleted the Illustrator preferences folder/files  --> didn't help
created a new user account and opened Illustrator  --> Illustrator WORKS
Illustrator seems to work just fine in the new user account I created, yay!  But, I want it to work in my user account.
Are there preferences, settings, files, applications I need to check to resolve the issue in my account?  Any particular place I should start?
    Thanks for any feedback!

  • Photoshop CC 2014 crash when opening or creating new files when running with Cintiq 13HD.

I have a problem where Photoshop CC 2014 crashes when trying to open or create a new file while the Photoshop window is being displayed on my Cintiq 13HD.
When Photoshop is being displayed on my main monitor it doesn't crash.
I'm running Windows 7 (64 bit) and have updated my graphics and wacom drivers to their latest versions and Photoshop is completely up to date. (I'm running the 30-day free trial)
Here's the event log of the crash:

Update the driver from AMD's website to pick up all the bug fixes you are missing.

  • Photoshop no longer can open or create new files

I'm using CS3 on Windows. I had Photoshop open with 2 small PSDs: I individually closed each window. I then tried to open a PNG from my desktop: nothing happens. I'm on a single monitor setup running at my max resolution (1920x1200). It literally looks like it does when you first launch PS and there's no files open. So I shut it down and tried again: same thing. Shut it down and relaunched it: can't even make a new file, it has the exact same behavior: dialogs open and are interactible but after clicking "OK" there's nothing, as if I just opened the app. Yes, it's a legit copy. I did a search and tried the voodoo that people claimed fixed their problem (such as changing the default printer, etc) and none of it works. I had it happen a week ago as well and had no idea how it fixed itself. It just one day started working again. This is so irritating. I guess I'm going to have to use MS Paint now to view my PNGs.

Maybe a dialog is off screen. Have you tried pressing Esc when "nothing Happens"?
Did you really reset your preferences as described in the FAQ?
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776?tstart=0
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.

  • Indesign CS4 won't open after updating to Yosemite. How can I fix this?

I have a new macbook pro, just updated to yosemite, and I use the CS4 adobe suite almost daily. Photoshop, when I opened it, required a plugin which I downloaded and that works. Illustrator works fine, but Indesign begins to boot up, then crashes. Every. Time. I can't open anything. I know its not the latest version of indesign or anything, but shouldn't ID work too? Help me fix this! I use indesign more than anything else, and illustrator is not really going to be a good alternative for too long...

If you want Yosemite that badly, reformat the hard drive and do a clean
install of Yosemite followed by a normal installation of your software
    using the original media…no migration.
You’ll have a much better chance of getting things working.

  • Indesign CS4 won't open

I just installed the CS4 creative suite, and everything works but indesign. When I click on it in applications it instantly says that it quit unexpectedly. I tried the trial before purchasing and installing the software and didn't have any problems. I have a mac.

It should fix the whole suite as it is the workround to the licence expire bug and you will be able to use the whole suite as normal (no trials). If this fails, you may need to use the CS4 cleaner (http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cs4clean.html) before re-installing again
