InDesign CS5.5 Can't select Move Tool

I have InDesign CS5.5 installed on a desktop (Windows 7 Home) and it's working fine. I installed it on a second desktop (Windows 7 Professional). It seemed to install and update fine. However, if I create a new document and drag a rectangle I can't access the move tool to move it and I can't change the size/position using the boxes under the menu bar.
Any suggestions.

I needed InDesign on the second computer because of a major project with
a short deadline. I was very frustrated not being able to get it to work
and spent about six hours over three days working on it.
The issue was that I was using a Dell 27'' Ultra Sharp monitor
(2560x1440) with the text set to 150%.
Resetting it to Normal, 100% fixed the issue. I had to lower the
resolution a little to be able to read the text, but it's fine.
I did try to search for an answer but never associated the issue with a
resolution issue. Never would have thought to do that.
I did mark the answer as correct.

Indesign CS5.5 can't select objects, they don't show in layers panel either

I received an .indd file from a client. There are certain objects that I can't select. I know they aren't locked because I can't select "Unlock all on spread." The weird thing is, the objects don't show up in the layer panel. If I uncheck the layer's eye, they disappear. But if I uncheck the eyes of all the individual objects within the layer, the objects I can't select are still visible. I'm attaching a screenshot. Can someone help please?

The items are on a mster page.
In the Pages Panel, go to the master associated with the page you're on, there you'll find the things you're after.

You need to be in Expert Mode to see the full toolbox. Click the word Expert at the top of the PSE window to go there.

Photoshop CS5 - Image resize problem with move tool

Here's my problem
When I try to resize an layer using the move tool (as opposed to the Free Transform tool), while I'm in the process of moving the scaling handles, the bounding box reflects my movement but the layer preview stays at it's original size. When I stop moving the handles there is a few seconds delay and then the new scale size shows up. If I try to move the handles again, without commiting to the transform, the layer preview reverts back to it's original size until I've finished moving the handles.
I didn't have this problem with CS4 and I've only recently upgraded. I work around this problem by using the proper Free Transform tool (ctrl+t) but it would be nice to know why the hell this happens. It seems to me to be more of a graphical glitch than a software preference but I thought I'd check just-in-case.

I also read you you tried updating your video dirvers and your syste crashed and you had to roll back. Make sure you have downloaded the latest correct drivers. If that does not work try turning off Open GL in photoshops preferences.
On my old XP 32 bit system CS5 movet tool with transform dialog does not fail like on your system. I can move the handles time and time again without commiting the transform. The only way to have Photoshop revert the transform back to the original state is to press the ESC key to cancel the uncommitted transform.

InDesign CS5.5 - can't make paragraph break...

Whether I'm converting a (book chapter) file from InDesign CS5 to InDesign CS5.5, or whether I start with a fresh CS5.5 document page and place text into it, I can't make a paragraph break. The usual way I've done this, which works just fine in CS5, is to place the cursor where I want the break, and then hit "enter." In CS5.5, when I do this, nothing happens! Using the space bar to put space between words works fine. Selecting and deleting works fine. "Control Z" to undo doesn't work at all. Are these known bugs? Is there a fix? Truly aggravating. Thanks in advance to anyone who has a fix.

I did look for the other folder, found "InDesign SavedData" file, renamed it. Didn't help.
No, I have not adjusted the font size in windows' customizations (Win7). This is a pretty new computer - about 3 months old. Are you saying I should change the font setting from the factory setting? That idea makes me really nervous.
Sorry for the various threads. Not easy to find the thread to join when the search window in Forums turns up "no results."

I totally disagree.
As a plugin developer i am developing solutions for something adobe actually didn't include in their projects.
There also isn't any compare between the amout all plugin developer have to spent to make their plugin compatible with 3 or more different Adobe-Versions and the amout adobe would had to spent to make their SDK backword-compatible.

Hello, I am experiencing the following problem:
During most sessions with Illustrator, after a while (not sure about the exact amount of time here), once I have selected the hand tool (usually by pressing the "H" key shortcut), Illustrator will not let me select another tool.
The only solution I have arrived at is to save the file (which it does let me do), close and then restart Illustrator.
It's not too much of a frustration, but it does annoy me sometimes. Any ideas?

I get this problem also but it seems more random then switching to the hand tool. Mine just switches to the hand tool itself.
Sometimes I'm able to hit the space bar a few times and the problem stops.
Other times I have to do a full reboot.
I've seen this problem pop up on the forum from time to time but I have never seen a solution.

InDesign CS5.5 - locked objects and align tools not working together

In earlier versions of InDesign I used the Align palette, spacing 0 mm, and "dragged in" other objects to perfect fit to the center object. InDesign drags in objects from the right this way. So if I needed to drag in objects from the left side I locked the center object first and InDesign understood what I wanted to do.
In CS5 and 5.5 this is not possible anymore. If I lock an object it is not selectable. But there is a preference setting for this so I change it. Now I can select the locked object. But when I try to align it with another object there is an error message saying I can't move this object because it i locked. Well... I am not trying to move it hence the lock I applied...
I don't understand this changed behaviour. If a locked object is out of play I might as well use the layer palette and lock objects that way.
Could someone please shed some light on this?

Apparently the distribute spacing command only uses the top object as a reference. I would say that's a bug.

InDesign CS5 triple click to select text doesn't work

Hey guys
I'm really frustrated because I've just upgraded to CS5 and I have really run out of ideas. When I was using CS4, when I triple click on a text frame with any tool, it will activate the text tool and select the whole word I triple clicked.
What has happened to this feature in CS5? I have checked the preference and the triple click option is checked. So I cannot see why isn't it working for me. I'm really frustrated because it just means I have to change my way of doing things which it has developed into a habit after 4 years of using InDesign.
I really appreciate some help here. I want that feature back. I don't wanna go looking for another solution and learn another habit. Don't have the time.

I'm not sure what you're meaning by the background image highlighting. But you could put it on its own layer and hide the layer. Or you could lock the object (Object > Lock).

Mac InDesign CS5.5: can someone please check if variables do not cause crash when copied

There is a bug in Mac InDesign CS4 and CS5 which causes InDesign to crash if text containing a variable is copied. I am hoping this bug is fixed in CS5.5.
So can someone with Mac CS5.5 try this for me and report back:
1. create a variable, or use one already created by Adobe
2. insert it into some text
3. copy the text
4a. try pasting it into another part of the same document
4b. try pasting it into an external document, for example an Excel file.
Hopefully it won't crash and you will be able to tell me whether it is fixed or not! If variables do not cause InDesign to crash when copied then it might be worthwhile for me to upgrade to CS5.5.

These problems are rarely easy to debug.
It appears from your crash report:

That the problem is in the Adobe PDF Library (not surprising, this is what reads PDF files) when getting "merged XAP keywords," whatever those are.
I believe the XAP: metadata has been superceded by XMP metadata, so this suggests your PDF files have corrupt XMP metadata, or XMP metadata that InDesign cannot deal with.
You might try running some of the preflights and fixups in Acrobat that relate to analysis of XMP metadata,
or simply removing XMP Metadata from the PDF entirely, again in Acrobat.
It sounds like this is a genuine InDesign bug (even if your PDF file was damaged, it should not crash ID!), so you should open a case with Adobe Support and get them to file a bug (http://adobe.com/go/supportportal). Optimistically, such a bug is unlikely to be fixed in time for CS6, so don't expect miracles. Think of it as making sure your bug doesn't hurt other people two years from now.

InDesign CS5.5--can't generate live captions

Having used Bridge to insert metadata descriptions and copyright info in my graphics files, and having done "caption setup" in Objects Menu, I find that the Captions Submenu choices for "Generate Live Caption" and "Generate Static Caption" are greyed out. I am doing an ebook with inline pictures and have placed the jpegs at the beginning of paragraphs. I can't replicate any of the smooth successes depicted in all the "How To" videos. What am I doing wrong, please?

I also found this comment on another forum page from Peter Spier: "To group the image and the frame with the caption you'll need to "unanchor" the image first by selecting the frame and cutting. Paste temporarily on the pasteboard, position the caption frame, group, then cut and paste back into the text. You may need to adjust the "anchored object options" for the anchored group after pasting." Your comment and his will give me a direction for the dozens of images I already positioned inline. After that, much smoother sailing, understanding this part of the mechanics.

InDesign CS5.5 Can't export to anything but smallest size PDF

Hi everyone,
starting this morning i am unable to export a document as a PDF to anything but the smallest possible size setting. All the other options (high quality print, x1a, etc) are gone. I installed an update yesterday but can't recall what the update was for so i'm wondering if anyone else is having this issue? I have some ads due and need to export to a higher res PDF.
I've tried doin't Print as Adobe PDF but the option doesn't reside there either.

You can start with wahtever preset is avialable. From the dropdown for standards, pick PDF/X-1a and most of the seetings will chang automatically for you, but you still need to go to the Compression screen and make sure the color and grayscale sownsample values are set to 300 and the the image quailty is set to Maximum, and set lineart compression to 1200, then go to the Advanced screen and set the transparency flattener resolution to [High Resolution].
Do you make backups of your computer on a regular basis? On mac that would probably be Time Machine, on windows either Windows backup or a third-party program. If you do, you ought to be able to find your old presets on the backup file and restore them.
