InDesign CS5.5 Fails to export to PDF

I can't get InDesign (Mac running OS X Lion 10.7.4 ) to export to PDF. It gives me "Failed to Export to PDF" with every document I've tried. I've created new documents to test, and still gives error. I've installed the newest patch (Adobe InDesign CS5.5 7.5.3 update for Macintosh - All Languages) but still am having the same problems.
Any ideas? I've searched the internet and can't find any solutions that offer any hope. Thoughts?

The last time we saw this, it turned out to be a font problem, but it could be a lot of things. Take a look at this other thread about failure in CS5.5:
http://forums.adobe.com/message/4575362#4575362
Also, check to see if it works in a new user account, or if it works in the foreground (add the file to a Book, then export from the Book).

  • InDesign CS5 crashing when exporting to PDF - large image?

    Hi can anyone help?
I'm working with some rather large files in InDesign - it's a layout for a vinyl banner. It contains one image, created at 1/2 size @ 600dpi - 1500 mm x 850 mm. The file size generating is 1.25GB. I can't save in any format other than tif, psb, raw. I've gone with tif.
So, I've placed the image above into my document and need to send to the printers to do a resolution test. Unfortunately, when exporting to a high quality PDF, it hangs and InDesign crashes.
I know the image is probably the cause of the issue, but really not sure what I can do about that?
Crash report is here - http://pastebin.com/EBNxE8fS
If anyone can offer any advice on a) how I can save the image as a print acceptable format that DOESN'T create a humongous file size OR b) whether there are any settings i can cgane in InDesign to handle this better?
    Thanks

    Hiya
Thanks for the reply - and yes, I thought the ppi was too high as well HOWEVER thats the specs advised by the production house. I've managed to get the file to export using a ppi of 500 - so it will print at 250ppi full size - which i think is ok, anything above that and my machine just doesn't want to play.
I will try and use the zip compression and see what they results in. Unfortunately, becuase of the size and ppi, I'm only given the 3 file format options to save in as above.
I've explained the situation to my production house and am awaiting their reply. These banners, although will possibly be seen up close, won't in no way be viewed at arms length.
    Thanks for your help

  • Failed to export to pdf - need help in understanding adobe advice

my indesign document failed to export to pdf, therefore I looked up the indesign help - see below; I could not find where to proceed after point 2 / would anyone help?
    thank you
Solution 2: Downsample the images after export using  Acrobat.
Choose File > Export and select  PDF as your format, choose a location and click Save.
In the Export PDF dialog box, disable the image downsampling  options.
Open the resulting PDF in Acrobat.
    Choose Advanced > PDF Optimizer.
Set the downsampling options you desire in the Image Settings pane.
Disable any other options that are not needed.
Click OK and choose the name and location to save the file.

I'm going to assume you actually are unable to accomplish/understand step 2 as opposed to not knowing how to open the resulting pdf.
See screen shot - use the pull down menus under compression for Color Images, Grayscale Images and Monochrome Images - Select Do Not Downsample. Although, I think the Help file has you chasing your tail.

Export the pdf from indesign some error Pop Up window (Failed to Export the PDF file). How slove the problem
Please some one help on this

You need to try exporting the first half of the book.
If that exports ok then export the other half of the book.
Whatever half it fails on - keep dividing the book in half to find the culprit page or pages.
For example if your book is 128 pages long:
    1. Export pages 1 - 63
    2. If these Fail to Export then
    3. try exporting1-32
    4. If these Fail to Export
    5. then try exporting1-16
If it doesn't fail (step 2)
    Then export pages 64-128
    and 64-90 etc.
until you find the pages causing the issues.

  • I'm running Indesign CS5 & it appears my Adobe PDF presesets have stopped working. Can you help?

I'm running Indesign CS5 & it appears my Adobe PDF presesets have stopped working. Can you help?

It's under utilities in the window menu.
If the simple PDF works, that may indicate a problem with the file after all, but one way to to force the export to the foreground is to create a new Book (File > New > Book), then add the file that's giving you trouble to that book. (a Book is just a container format used to combine multiple .indd files into a single output)
From the Book panel flyout menu you can export to PDF and see what that does. Failure indicates a file problem, success a background task problem.
It's a little odd that you aren't getting an error message....
Anyway, if the problem is the file, try export in two halves. If both halves export, it's a system resources problem and not much you can do other than attempt to see what is using all the memory (probably some large complex vector object, or many vector objects) or just do the export in chunks that work and combine them in Acrobat Pro. If one half fails, try exporting half  fo the failing half at a time. Keep dividing the failing half until you isolate a page with the problem.

  • Indesign CS4/CS3 and Export to PDF problems

    Hello,
I have been having problems with both Indesign CS3 and CS4 and exporting large documents to a PDF-file. Exporting halts with error messages like: "Failed to Export the PDF file" in CS4 or "Error encountered while reading JPEG image" in CS3.
Problem can be corrected by simply closing InDesign and restarting it and opening the same file again. It appears that problem occurs more often the file is large. Any suggestions how to fix this problem?
I'm using Vista 64-bit and have 8GB memory.

Handling of missing links HAS changed, and in my opinion for the worse, but at the request of users, so that missing links no longer open the Links panel automatically or ask you to update on opening as they used to, though you should still receive a warning that the links are missing UNLESS YOU HAVE TURNED IT OFF IN YOUR PREFERENCES. It's on by default and you will find the option under the file handling section.
The rationale is that many workflows do not require that links be intact to accomplish the current editing, and longer documents with hundreds of missing links used to take many minutes to open while ID searched, essentially costing those users lots of money.
IF you have stored the links in the same directory as the .indd file, and IF you have moved the entire directory and IF you have enabled finding missing links when opening files, InDesign will find and update the locations for the links when the file is opened. If ID is unable to locate a link, because it is not in the current directory or a subfolder, you will see a warning message (in the past you would have had the option to browse for the missing files), and you must open the links panel if you wish to fix them manually.
In my opinion this is a very acceptable situation, and a great benefit to all types of workflows. I need to know links are modified or missing, so I've left that enabled. Those who don't need to know are no longer bothered or delayed. I suggest you pay a visit to the preferences and make sure that missing/modified checks are enabled, and if you are still having problems then your links aren't stored in the same directory, and that has always been an issue in ID when things get moved.

  • "Content generation error. Failed to Export the PDF file"

Building a multi-folio in InDesign 6 Folio Builder V30. Received "Content generation error. Failed to Export the PDF file" on several of the spreads. I have tried reducing the original pdf files sizes, but that did not help.

I'm very new to DPS so I hope the following description makes some kind of sense.
My magazine is in the process of doing trial runs for an iPad edition. I'm setting some templates up for us to work off so the process from magazine to iPad will run a lot smoother month to month.
So far I've set up some dummy stock pages in an InDesign CS6 document, currently 15 pages long.
All images are linked and all fonts have paragraph styles applied to them.
I'm at the stage I want to check the document on my iPad to test run font sizes and their legibility.
We have successfully been able to export the document as a jpg file but we really need the PDF format. When attempting this we get the above message.

  • InDesign crashes when i export a pdf, overprint preview and package

    I am using CS6 on a MacBook Pro. I have version 10.8.5.
I am working on a manual (original file not created by me).
I was trying to pacakge all the files together but it kept crashing. I do not see the blank window some people have been seeing when this happens. I only get the window about letting Apple know about the problem and submitting the problem to Adobe.
Under Preflight all systems are fine, I have the green light.
I checked that paragraph styles, character styles and master pages did not have fonts missing.
I went through all files and noticed some eps's did not have fonts converted to outlines so I made them outlines and relinked them.
I also changed all RGB to CMYK.
I converted the file to an IDML, reopened InDesign. I also resaved the file to a different name.
These did not seem to help unfortunately.
If there is no visible problem, what can one do? At this point I am trying to pdf one page at a time to see if I can pinpoint as to where the issues lies.
InDesign also crashes when exporting a .pdf and when I try to run an overprint preview. So strange..

Well I don't get why this would have been the problem, but I removed the logo that was on the cover and on the back. Since the logo was all vector, I copied it and pasted it into InDesign (so no links). This allowed me to create a .pdf and to package. This logo has been used several times over and over so not sure why this was part of the issue..

  • Keep getting conversion failed on exporting files PDF.

keep getting conversion failed on exporting files PDF.

    Hi jfcobb999,
I'm sorry that you're having trouble converting files. Are you converting via the web interface, or through Adobe Reader? Do you have a large number of files in the root folder of your Files list on Acrobat.com?
Let's try these things for starters:
Clear the browser cache and try again.
    Use a different browser.
Make sure that Reader is up-to-date by choosing Help > Check for Updates.
If you have a large number of files stored on Acrobat.com, move some of them into a subfolder.
Please let us know how it goes.
    Best,

  • CS5 will not export to pdf, nor can I delete background tasks to close program

I haven't a clue as to why InDesign CS5 will not create a pdf file from a 12 page document that (to my knowledge) has no errors.  This file is of a 12-page advertising catalogue that has already been sent to the printer, so there is nothing wrong with the file.
I want to create a low resolution version of the file for viewing on the web.  The request shows up in the Background Tasks, however, nothing is happening.  Plus, I cannot delete the background task.
I am using version 7.0 of InDesign CS5 on a Mac Pro Quad Core, running Version 10.6.8 of OS X.
Up until this point I haven't had a problem with InDesign.
    All help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,

Thank you Peter for your suggestion.
I finally figured out that I was working with a corrupt file.  Go figure.    No telling how that happened as the last time I worked with the file was when I uploaded it to the printer.
Everything is works perfectly in my InDesign software.
Thank you again for trying to help.

  • Fail to Export to PDF

Running BOXI release 1 here, and I am trying to export to a PDF and get the Fail to Export error message. I believe the problem is in my use of a sub-report. The main body, w/o the subreport will export just fine, so I know that the issue is not a font issue. It will export correctly if I export it as a work document. Errors are Failed to export the report. Not supported. And sometime file not found.
    Any thoughts?
    -Dennis-

    Hi Dennis
As per the description, the report fails to export to PDF after adding the subreport to the main report.
Please let us know the following information:
    1) Exact version of Crystal Reports Designer.
    2) In which section of the main report have you inserted the subreport?
    3) What happens if you export the subreport to PDF format?
    4) Create a new section in the main report, insert the subreport and then try to export the report to PDF format.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks
