Indesign CS5 and CS2 upgrade/compatibility issues

Hi,
I have recently upgraded from CS2 to CS5 and I am having printing issues.
If I open a CS2 file in CS5, I can not print direct from Indesign.  It prints part of the page with big white boxes and then spits out 5 odd pages of error messages.
I had a case open with Technical Support (#181804690) but they have now told me that CS2 and CS5 are not compatible and I will have to redesign all files from scratch.  He said that all CS2 files will not work in CS5 - only from CS3 and up.
Surely this is can't be right and Adobe do not care (as I was told by Tech Support)?!
Also, Indesign seems to crash every time I close the application.
Can anyone help with this?  Thanks!

Hi Peter,
What a relief!!!
My case number was 181804690.
I have a Dell Optiplex 780 Intel Core Duo, Windows XP 32 bit.
I am trying to print direct from Indesign to a Lexmark C782.  We have updated all the drivers etc from Lexmark but still not luck.
When I print I get part of the background print fine but where there is meant to be text and images, there is just white boxes.
The error messages which print out after the first page are:
ERROR: syntaxerror
OFFENDING COMMAND: binary token, type=138
STACK:

  • InDesign CS5 and InCopy CS3

I work at a weekly newspaper, and we have been using and InDesign/InCopy workflow for several years. The Reporters use InDesign CS2 (never did get around to installing the CS3 upgrades we bought because at first the computers they use wouldn't handle it, and after the computer upgrades got done all around, no one ever bothered). After the stories are written, the editor reviews them in InCopy, then releases them to the page designers who are now working in InDesign CS3 as part of Standard and Premium Suites.
We are considering upgrading to InDesign CS5, but absolutely NONE of the reporters or the editor needs (or will ever use) the listed improvements included in InCopy CS5. Since there are nine InCopy products in the office, and as everyone knows the economy sucks - especially for PRINTED NEWSPAPERS these days, we really hate to have to upgrade just for upgrades sake.
I have downloaded InDesign CS5 trial to check if our CS3 files will open and work in it, after reading an article published in the Washington Newspaper, a publication put out by the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association, reported that one of the state's newspapers happily upgraded to CS5 and had a nightmare of problems just opening their CS4 files. This has my editor very nervious about us upgrading. So... I'm testing it out, and I can't place, then open and edit our CS3 Incopy Files. I get a message that says "this story needs toa be converted to "InCopy Document" format to edit it. I've saved it in InCopy CS3 to both incx and incd formats, and both receive the error. Has Adobe made simple InCopy files incompatible with InDesign? I can import files from just about everywhere BUT InCopy??? The Sister Program?
Please advise a simple work around, or I'll bet our upgrade is totally put off.
    Daria Lacy
    The Reflector

    Bob,
I have to feel that you aren't really reading my posts. While I did mention that our reporters and editor lessentially use InCopy for a word processing program, I did specifically mention in my last post that we use the program for exactly what it was originally intended, for reporters to write and edit, for designers to layout the text, and for writers/and or correction people to get into the files and fix problems - up until the last minute, so yes, we do need to use InCopy, in the manner we were told it was developed for. We don't use it for viewing layouts - that's what InDesign is for.
PLUS, none of our reporters have time, inclination or need to view the layout as it appears in InDesign. If they did, we'd get InDesign for them. They are busy investigating and writing stories, they don't have time to learn even the basics of layout, and frankly, they don't even want to. The one single reporter that is interested has learned some of the basics of InDesign, but she doesn't use it on a regular basis, and dosn't need or want to view the pages. She does need and want to edit a story occasionally even after it's been placed into the layout, but she want's to view it as the same copy she wrote, so she can do it quickly, not as a page layout she has to hunt thru it and every other story on the page to find the problem.
I don't mind Adobe stopping selling older versions - don't blame them at all on that one - if you're buying a new product - go buy the latest and greatest. If the version didn't matter, you wouldn't have to worry if about matching your other versions and you wouldn't need to find an old version. But why BUILD IN obselecense in a PART of a system within just a couple of years. We're using CS3 InDesign, yes, but we bought it just shortly before they came out with CS4. If we'd known when the release would be (we don't track the industry close enough to be checking on when release dates are "expected" to be) we'd have probably waited the 4 months and upgraded to that. But time wise, we haven't had the CS3 THAT long, so I don't go along with the "two versions back is too old" theory.
I'm afraid I don't quite see why the text fit would change from one version to another when the fit is based on font, text size, etc. And that doesn't change, Times Roman, 10.5 point on 10.7 leading...  And as far as split/span/balanced column features and mutiple page sizes - those aren't going to affect our work flow at all. All we need is the ability to write text, and edit that text from other desks besides the designers, as well as the designers being able to open the file to fix headline size in InDesign.
As for the reporters getting the trial version and trying it out - did you miss where I mentioned that we provided CS3 to all of them, and pretty much none of them bothered to load it onto their computers??? They don't want any bells and whistles. They want to keep going as they are going.
If they wanted to go to the latest and greatest - it'd wouldnt' be an issue - but they don't need or want it, why should they be forced to upgrade just for the sake of upgrading?
And that also brings up the issue, when we buy those 7 versions that aren't going on computers with InDesign (and the whole rest of the Standard and Design Suites) who wants to bet me that it's gonna take more hard drive space, more ram, and there's a huge potential that it ain't even going to fit on their computers and still leave room for it to think?
And just one other though - just because backwards incompatibility is a fact of life in today's programs - does that make it good or right?
What this basically means, with no specific NEED for the designers to upgrade to InDesign CS5, and the requirement that if they do we'll have to upgrade not only the reporter's versions of InCopy AND most probably, their computers, we will probably put off upgrading and wait another year and a half for CS6.

  • Indesign CS5 and CS5.5 crash on new document / Lion 10.7

    Hello!
In our agency we encountered a problem since upgrading to OS X Lion 10.7. Both our Indesign CS5 and CS5.5 keep crashing on us whetver we open an existing document or create a new one. We tried to clean-up our installations, deleted both, installed just CS5 and/ CS5.5 - trashed preferences etc. pp. Nothing worked.
Indesign opens like it should - but the moment we create a document it just hangs with the spinning ball - does anyone else can recreate the issue? We use no plugins in indesign only the app "Fontcase" from the Appstore to maintain our collection of fonts.. but we even tried to deactivate this app to see if it helps - no success.
We currently cant set up the system new since it is time consuming and just our last choice.. is there some other way to find the problem? We also never see the adobe crash-reporter.. not even after 10-15 minutes as stated in the lion os x issue list.
    Thanks!

    Ah, this is easy.

  • Create unlimited folios today with InDesign CS5 and 5.5!

    Adobe's official statement
    http://blogs.adobe.com/digitalpublishing/2011/10/create-unlimited-folios-today-with-indesi gn-cs5-5.html
    Did you know…
Customers with InDesign CS5 and CS5.5 can now create an unlimited number of .folio files for no additional charge.
You already know that InDesign CS5 and CS5.5 integrate with Adobe Digital Publishing Suite to allow customers to publish apps to tablet devices such as the iPad, Xoom and PlayBook. But for InDesign CS5 and CS5.5 customers who are interested in creating content for tablet devices but are not yet customers, it is now easier than ever to try digital publishing before making the financial investment in the Digital Publishing Suite solution that meets your needs.
InDesign CS5 and CS5.5 customers can now:
Create an unlimited number of .folio files in InDesign
Preview them on Adobe Content Viewer  – including interactivity – to see how they will render when published to a tablet device
Share them with colleagues or clients on a 1:1 basis via the Adobe Content Viewer
Further, customers can now access the Folio Producer Service in the Digital Publishing Suite with a valid Adobe ID to manage and edit their .folio files. All of this can be done before purchasing Digital Publishing Suite.
If you are interested in learning how to create an App directly from InDesign CS5 or CS5.5, without writing code or depending on a developer, feel free to try it. You can pitch ideas to your client or your boss; or you can build a portfolio of your work and preview it on a tablet device. Practice makes perfect, and with an unlimited number of .folios, you can practice as much as you want! When you’re ready to publish to an app store, you can select the Digital Publishing Suite solution that is right for you.

I'm sorry EvBurk, what you want is intended not to work.
All Adobe's promotional material concerning InDesign and Digital Publishing (including the above "official statement") carefully uses verbs like "create" or "produce". But they never mention "distribute" or "spread", without explicitly referring to their exclusive hosting services. The whole Folio thing (in contrast to the former "issue" format) revolves around not giving you any chance of physically exporting, managing or owing the folio file itself. It's always somewhere on Adobe's or Apple's servers, or on your iPad, which is also as shut as a vault. So there's no way to export a folio file and toss it around like a pdf or jpeg. All you can do (without a paid distribution) is "share" your folio with some others, under the idea of "testing" and "reviewing". But this can be a cumbersome method. And even when paid (for the app), it's still difficult to distribute it outside Apple's or Android's market.
More than a year ago (in the middle of the Flash-on-iOS debate) Adobe users, developers, bloggers, and evangelists heavily criticized Apple's "walled garden". Adobe literally stated "We Love Apple - What we don't love is anybody taking away your freedom to choose what you create, how you create it, and what you experience on the web." Well, you could say now: "I love Adobe, but what I don't love is Adobe taking away my freedom to own my files, and distribute them on my own terms." They let us create, but not spread our ideas. It's like giving you a typewriter and copier, that only works with Adobe stock paper. Like giving you a voice and an instrument, but only allowing you to sing and play in some walled gardens (dress code: Apple ID) or secluded shed (invitation only).
I really wonder why they so fiercely protect 'their' Folio file. Why do they either have to be "under protection" or be turned into apps? I understand why Apple wants and needs to curate apps, but they don't mind me spreading my own ePubs, mp3 or jpegs. Why doesn't Adobe let me put my folio's on my own server, or send them off to someone with my own preferred service? The Content Viewer could easily be an Acrobat-like reader and let the iPad open folio's (by web links or mail enclosures) into it. If I see how many questions, worries, and problems creators and users have due to this whole closed technique and business, it would be easier to just let go and see what happens. Is it money? Of course it is. But my guess is that Adobe would eventually benefit more from it.
So I hope Adobe declares the Folio as an "open" standard soon, but they're definitely not in that stage. Maybe the specification of the file format just isn't ready yet. Maybe some managers need to remember again how to "Spread the Love"...

  • Final Cut Pro 4.5 and Quicktime 7 compatibility issues. Error 39!

I see some people saying Quicktime 7 is not compatible with Final Cut 4.5 and some saying it is.
I upgraded to 10.3.9 and then Quicktime 7 and I started getting error 39 at this one spot in my timeline and then crashing if I tried to play just a few seconds ahead of that spot. I tried trashing the prefs but that didn't do any good. The individual files play fine outside the timeline so it isn't corrupt media. I tried rerendering the effects that are at that point but that didn't help. I tried copying the entire timeline to a new sequence and that didn't help.
The strange thing was that when I took the part of the movie that was having trouble and deleted it from the timeline it still got error 39 when just playing over the empty timeline where the media used to be! This led me to realize that the problem lay in some Quicktime audio effects I had about a second in front ot the error 39 spot. I took off the effects from that audio but it didn't help. Then I deleted that audio from the timeline and just pasted it back in from the original clip and then it finally got to working.
Now I know nothing about the software, but I thought there might be some connection between the fact that I had effects that FCP labels as "quicktime effects" on there from my days in Quicktime 6.5, then upgraded to Q7, and perhaps those old effects don't work in Q7? I don't know.
So, my immediate problem is solved but I thought this experience may be of use to someone else. And perhaps some compatibility issues can be brought to light.

I would assume the Software Update program has sufficient logic within it to detect that my friend is running Final Cut Pro 4.0 and it would therefore be disastrous to install QuickTime 7.3, thus removing QuickTime 7.3 from her list of suggested updates. Would someone at Apple please fix this?
Sorry, but Quicktime is a component for SO MANY things, not just FCP. Sorry, but the OS doesn't detect that older versions of software are on there and won't be compatible...this is where you need to have a little knowledge. And sorry, but you need to have a little knowledge. If things are working, DO NOT UPGRADE unless it has been tested and cleared. In the case of FCP 4...it has not.
Rule of thumb...if you use older software, you have to stick to older versions of the OS and components that that software relies on.
How many things were broken with Vista? So many that the HUGE community let out a cry and now XP is available again configured on machines or as a stand alone buy. And no, Vista didn't warn that certain applications wouldn't work either.
You gotta research and find out. This place here...this forum...is a FANTASTIC place to find stuff like this out.
BTW...Apple doesn't read these forums, only us users. Gotta submit feedback here:

  • Can i purchase and CS2 upgrade, or do I have to buy new

I have CS2 and need to upgrade to Maverick.  Can i purchase and CS2 upgrade, or do I have to buy new

Adobe does not provide upgrades for CS2 applications, nor a special introductory offer for Creative Cloud Membership, unless you have at least CS3.
If you also use Adobe Photoshop, InDesign or at least two other Adobe CC applications, you'd get an Adobe Creative Cloud Membership, which will cost U$49.99 a month.  .
Alternatively if you only use Adobe Illustrator, you can get a single-app plan for U$19.99 a month.
Both those prices are based on you locking in for an anual plan.

  • Indesign CS5 and CS6 crashing

    OSX 10.7.5
Working in Indesign CS5 and CS6 on the same computer. Opening multiple different documents, it will crash either while browsing the file, closing, or saving at random intervals.

Using Universal Type Server 3 client for fonts. I tried doing a synchronize and reset, and reactivating all of the fonts, but this did not help.

Is Universal Type Server updated to the latest version? Is InDesign the only program you're facing issues with? Are you working with the document that is located in a network location? Try saving the file locally to your computer and see if you can replicate the crash. Clean the InDesign cache location by dragging the en_US folder from the following location: Macintosh HD/Users/Username/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/version 7.0 or version 8.0/ for both CS5 and CS6. If you can't see the Library, then use the Go menu of the Finder holding down the Alt key on the keyboard to make the Library visible inside the Go menu and navigate to it that way.
Once you've cleaned the cache, re-launch InDesign and open your document to edit. Do not activate all fonts using the UTS, just activate the fonts that you used in your document to test for crash. If ID still crashes, then replace fonts by local fonts and test for crash.
Change the Display performance settings from Preferences to Fast for both Options panel and Adjust view settings panel and test for crash.

  • ILife 08 and iMovie 06 compatibility issues?

Sorry if any of this has already been covered in other threads...
Has anyone had a chance to thoroughly test the 6.04 version of iMovie (download version if you install iLife 08) and know what compatibility issues there are?
I.E. How well does iPhoto 08 play with iMovie 06, or iMovie 06 with iDVD 08. Are the third party plugins problematic with v6.04?
From what I saw at the Apple store, iPhoto08 and iDVD08 would be the only apps that I would really want since iMovie08 seems to be a step backwards and iWeb is still lacking in everything that I wanted improved. But I don't want to waste the money to discover all sorts of "gotchas" with trying to get iMovie06 to play nice with the rest of iLife08...
Also, has anyone done an install excluding iMovie08 entirely? Do you still need to download 6.04 if installed this way? Are there any pitfalls?
This is like Deja vu or something...When iLife06 first came out, I installed everything but iMovie and stuck with iMovie05 for a long time cause of all the bugs and how long it took to get the third party plugins working...

Of all the things for people to moan about with iMovie '08, the real unfortunate thing is it's inability to import effects, etc. (essentially your completed movie) from iMovie HD. One could somewhat forgive Apple for this debacle, if only it played nice with iMovie HD. Then it could be everything it's supporters say it is, i.e. "a different app," "a simple app for simpletons in a hurry" (although I find it's lack of tools and compatibility issues more difficult to manage).
...and a lot of us feel like this is the thing we're going to be stuck with going forward.
I keep thinking that something else is going to happen, because this can't be right. I think this diver/video engineer who came up with this concept is suffering from the bends.
Apple doesn't need the money, (as in making us buy Final Cut Pro for decent video editing), trust me, so I don't understand why it would take the PR hit.
iMovie '08 spoofs are already on YouTube, etc.

  • Line thickness problem in indesign CS5 and CS6

I use indesign CS5 and many short lines of 0.5 point in my project.
After export to pdf (press) everything seems correct. After rip process from printer office in compressed file lines seems to have different thickness even on large zoom (400%).
High quality pdf from rip prepared by printer office still shows small differences in thickness. Lines are in one solid color in my project.
What is the source of this problem? 0.5 point ines seems not extremely thin.
If the line is not sharp in pdf will it be not sharp in press?

I wouldn't go off what I see on screen. I'd be asking the printer for a hi-res proof. If that's not satisfactory they could run a test on offcuts on another print job to see where the problem lies.
One reason for different linethickness could be that the lines are interacting with transparent areas, giving the appearance of thicker, or could be physically changing the width by a few decimals.
I'd try putting any of the thin lines on their own layer - and perhaps try different PDF compatibilities, from PDF 1.3 to PDF 1.4 etc.

  • Indesign cs5 and photoshop cs5 preferences installed as one.

I have Indesign cs5 and adobe photoshop cs5 extended installed in my copmputer. I see those two programs as the largest installed applications in my computer. I just wonder that maybe some of the preferences of Indesign cs5 and photoshop cs5 are the same. I am thinking that these files are the reason why the two applications are very large.
For example the Adobe Bridge cs5, i think that Adobe Bridge is installed two times in my computer. One from the installation of Indesign and one is from the Photoshop.
I just want to know if there is a way to install the two applications having their preferences installed once and both applications could use them. I think in that way i can save a free space in my hard drive. Any help would be much appreciated.

You cannot save space on your hard drive by combining portions of these programs, no.
Their "preferences" take up a very small fraction of the space used by these programs.
Furthermore, they already have an extensive set of common (shared) files that are used by both programs that are installed outside the program directories for each program.
    Under Windows, that is C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe. For Mac, /Library/Application Support/Adobe.
    But no.
Also, hard drives are incredibly cheap. If you're worried about the size of these programs, you are doing something wrong and you're not going to be able to use them efficiently anyhow. In particular, effective use of photoshop needs many more times the size of the program in free space.
It's probably time to go and out buy several hundred GB (or some TB) of space.

  • Are InDesign CS5 and InCopy CC compatible?

Does a workflow between InDesign CS5 and InCopy CC work?Or does InCopy CC only work with InDesign CS6 or CC?
I’d be really grateful for your advice - thanks!
    Kathrin

I was looking for answers to a problem and I found this post. Question. Can InCopy CS5 and CC live togheter on the same computer? I'm creating inDesign files using CS5 that I want to use with inCopy.
I cannot open any thing using InCopy CS5 but it all open in CC, Can save and re-open in InDesign CS5...
But I'm the only one in my team using CC. Anyway, any tips would be gratefully appreciated.

  • Indesign CS5 and CS5.5 compatibility?

    Hi All
Can you help... Do you know if Indesign and Illustrator CS5.5 files are compatible with CS5?
We've got Creative Suite Design Premium CS4 on one machine and CS5 on the other machine - it's a nightmare because things designed on  the CS5 machines can't be opened on the other machine without major headaches. So I need to upgrade CS4 machine to CS5, except that Adobe have gone and brought out CS5.5... and so it's now proving hard to get a CS4 to CS5 upgrade.
Therefore what will happen if I have CS5.5 on one machine and CS5 on the other? Are we still going to have compatibility issues?
    Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the info - that's what I suspected. We really need to be able to read the native Indesign files on both machines.
... "Best to upgrade both machines"... errr ha ha ha (nervous laugh). What at £600 each upgrade? After the British tax man has had his 10lbs of flesh there's just about enough left for food these days. Enough for one upgrade if we smash the piggy bank and certainly then nothing left for fun times!
Don't get me wrong, I really love the Adobe software, I think it's excellent, but the way Adobe charge for upgrades is actual full-on arm-twisting nasty 'tough luck mate' extortion. With 5.5 it's like having to buy a whole new car just so you can get new wiper blades that fit. I wouldn't mind, except that I don't need the new wiper blades, but they've stopped selling the previous versions. Even Micro$oft will still sell you Office 2007 if you want it. Bizarre way to build customer loyalty. Oh yes I forgot, they're the design software monopoly, so who cares! Let's ramp up the price again! Woopeee!
Anyway, thanks for the help. I'll have a look around the auction sites and online retailers to see if I can find stock of CS4 - CS5 upgrade.

  • Anyone having issues with InDesign (CS5) and Suitcase Fusion 3 (Mac)?

I've run into a problem that I think might be caused by Suitcase Fusion 3 [Version 14.2.0 (319)], but I'm wondering if anyone here is having any issues with InDesign and Suitcase Fusion like I am?
Just about every time I launch an InDesign document or an Illustrator document (don't seem to have the issue in Photoshop, strangely enough) it pretty much crashes to the point where it's a force quit. Before anyone asks the question, this is what I've done - I've reformatted my hard disk (even writing 0s!), done a clean install of Lion (10.7.3), clean install of Creative Suite 5 (and updates), clean install of Suitcase (and updates)...you get the idea. I'm still ending up with crashing just about every time I open a document in these two apps.
As an experiment I downloaded a (fully functioning) trial version of FontAgent Pro (which I didn't like, btw) and didn't encounter any crashing at all in either application.
I've opened a ticket with Adobe to see if they have any details as to whether this is a known conflict or whatever (though I don't hold much hope for getting help from them since it's looking more like a Suitcase issue than a Creative Suite one).
Does anybody have any suggestions as to what I can do to try and resolve this?
I'm in the middle of producing two magazines and I really really don't need this! Lol

From the lovely people at Extensis tech support -
Thanks for the info. As you said, if this is happening when you have only manually activated fonts, then the auto-activation isn't coming into play which does lead me to think it is related to the plug-in generally and maybe the sleep issue, which you say you definitely have. So I've added you to the sleep issue tracking.
If you find yourself coming back from putting the computer to sleep and the apps with Suitcase plugins have hung, do this:
    1)      Go to your spotlight and type in "activity"
    2)      Launch "Activity Monitor"
    3)      Highlight the name of the adobe/quark application that is hanging by clicking it.
    4)      Click the "Sample Process" button at the top of the screen.
    5)      Click the "Save" button.
    6)      Click the "Save" button again and save the file to your desktop.
    7)      This will generate a file such as " Sample of Adobe Illustrator CS5.txt"
    8)      Repeat this process with any other application that is hanging.
    9)      Highlight the "FMCore" process by clicking it.
    10)  Click the "Sample Process" button at the top of the screen.
    11)  Click the "Save" button.
    12)  Click the "Save" button again and save the file to your desktop.
    13)  This will generate a file named " Sample of FMCore.txt"
    14)  Place these files along with the ".Plugins.txt" files created earlier into a new folder called "Plugins"
    15)  Right click (control+click) to compress into a .zip file.
Please attach this zip in reply to this mail.
When we are sure of a fix, we'll get back to you. In the meantime here are some workarounds:
    Option 1:
    1)      Back up your font sets by dragging them to the desktop
    2)      Remove SF3 v14.2 by following the instructions here:
    http://www.extensis.com/en/support/kb_article.jsp?articleNumber=4020
    3)      Download and re-install Suitcase Fusion 3 (version 14.0.6) from:
    http://dl.extensis.com/downloads/ST/EN/M/SuitcaseFusion3-M-1406-EN.zip
    4)      Are there fonts and font sets in your old font vault you would like to recover?
    If NO :
    a)      Open SF3
    b)      Simply drag and drop your original fonts into the SF3 "Font Library". This will copy the fonts into a new font vault.
If YES : Restore your old fontvault from the backup the removal tool created
    a)      If you choose "Y" to KEEP your font vault earlier when you ran the removal script, on your desktop you will find a folder called "Extensis-Backup-today's date" that contains a backup of your previous suitcase fusion 3 fontvault.
    b)      Move your old font vault from the "Extensis-Backup-today's date" folder on your desktop into this folder:
    /Users/[your username]/Library/Extensis/Suitcase Fusion/Suitcase Fusion.fontvault
    c)       Launch SF3 from your dock. you should now see all your old fonts and font sets.
    Option 2:
Remove our auto-activation plugins and activate your fonts manually in SF3 and/or add your adobe/quark apps to the SF3 > Preferences > General > Global Auto-Activation Options list. here's how:
    1)      In SF3: choose Suitcase Fusion 3 > Manage Plugins
    2)      Uncheck the boxes for adobe/quark apps; this will remove our auto-activation plugins
    3)      Choose SF3 > Preferences > General
    4)      Under "Global Auto-Activation Options", press the "+" button to add your adobe/quark apps
Please note that "global auto-activation" is less accurate than our plugin-based auto-activation. Double check your font usage in your design app to confirm the correct font was loaded after opening a document.

  • CS3 to CS5 Upgrade - Compatibility Issues...?

Our company is thinking of upgrading to Adobe CS5 and will therefore have to upgrade hardware as well (running Power PC based Macs throughout the art and prepress departments). From what I've heard CS5 only works on Intel based Macs?
They are wanting to do a progressive roll out of new Intel-based iMacs which will obviously come pre loaded with Mac OS 10.6 - we are currently running Mac OS 10.4 on the G5 PPC Macs.
Straight away I see alarm bells ringing... only 1 Mac will be upgraded in each of the Art, Prepress and Digital Departments. There will still be 5 Macs within the area which will still be PPC based (3 in Art, 1 in Prepress and 1 in Digital).
My main question is - would you still be able to run old software (CS3, Quark 6, etc.) on a new Intel iMac so that all Macs across the departments will be able to open the same files regardless of hardware being used?
I know it defeats the purpose of upgrading to new and more powerful software and hardware - but I see no point personally in doing a progressive roll out of hardware and software if it is not going to be done across the entire range of workstations with the same department. Also a lot of outside companies that we deal with have already been upgrading to CS4 and recently CS5. The last time we upgraded hardware was in 2006...
Any replies would be helpful - personally the only way I can see an upgrade working is to apply it across all three departments. It will hit the hip pocket in one huge go but at least everyone will be singing from the same hymn sheet!
    Regards, Shaun

The CS3 programs should run fine on those new Macs. Anything older would be a problem.
That said, if you're going to do this, everyone should be upgraded at the same time because of incompatibilities between versions, especially InDesign.
As for Quark, you'll need to check with them. I haven't used it in many many years.

  • InDesign CS5 and CS5.5 Plugin issues.

I'm having problems with a InDesign file created in CS5.5 and opening it in InDesign CS5. It's giving me PlugIns error messages.  I know there is a issue in this, but I have not found any solutions.
Unfortunately, I cannot even go and export the file in InDesign CS5.5 as idml file as I no longer have CS5.5 at work.  How can I solve this problem without having to redo the whole job?

When I open an InDesign CS 5.5 idml in my InD CS 5, the pictures don't show (only as grey areas). What can I do to make them visible (if I don't have the links on my computer)?
As noted in your other thread, How do I make pictures visible in idml?, unfortunately you cannot.
