Indesign CS5 and Export to PDF

Hi Group!
Got a weird one here...
I've searched high and low for this but, I have a user who i just recently upgraded to CS5 (company still on CS4 for internal reasons), and noticed a strange anomaly when exporting to PDF. For whatever reason, somewhere within the operating system and/or application(s) when the IDCS5 file is exported to PDF, as soon at the PDF hits the desktop, or where ever the PDF file is saved to, Acrobat opens the file immediately after. Even before the PDF has finished ripping. Where do you suppose this setting is to open PDFs automatically like this? Anyone seen this? Thanks!

Hi Bob,
Maybe you can help with the CS5 problem that sends Acrobat to the background after automatically opening the pdf I just created with the "view pdf after exporting" box checked. In all previous versions, and in Illustrator, the pdf opens nicely in Acrobat and stays in the foreground so I can look at it, and send it as an attachment, etc.

  • Cannot print directly from InDesign CS5, must export to PDF

My co-worker and I have not been able to print to our Ricoh Aficion SP C811DN from InDesign since upgraded to CS5. We both experience similar errors (ERROR: undefined, OFFENDING COMMAND: o [or C, or some other letter] and then STACK: XXX). We are both running Windows XP, I am 64-bit, she is not. The only workaround thus far is exporting to PDF and printing from there.
I have tried printing single random pages and omitting graphics but neither of these seems to work. I did create a new document and inserted a single black box with white text and that printed just fine, but anything more complicated won't print.
Thanks for your help in advance.

Honestly, that’s the general advice anyway.
I never print from InDesign. It’s just not that efficient.
BTW, Windows XP64 is completely unsupported. Time to move to Windows 7.

  • InDesign CS5.5 Export to PDF fails how to fix?

Using InDesign CS5 to creat a portfolio, all layed out and ready to print but when I export to PDF it takes a long time and then fails.
    What am I doing wrong?

Is the issue with the one file only or with multiple file, if it is with the one file only then there could be some component like Image , font that could be causing the issue,
And if it with the multiple file then you can try this article:- kb2.adobe.com/cps/878/cpsid_87876.html

  • Why does my high res photoshop image appear blurry when placed in InDesign and Exported as PDF?

    Hi there,
I have a problem I've been trying to solve for days but just can't find the answer anywhere on the internet.
I have a large, good quality photoshop file (2268 x 979 pixels, resolution 300 pixels per inch). When I place it into InDesign, the image appears OK (I've changed my display settings to HIGH) - I then resize it in InDesign to 10% and the file still looks great! Then, when I export it as PDF (high quality print) it looks blurry.
Does anybody know why? The strangest thing is, I've placed other photoshop images in the same InDesign file and they look crystal clear. It is just this one I am having trouble with. I've saved it in the same folder as the other pictures, I've tried placing it as psd. , jpg. , photoshop pdf, png. everything...
The image looks great in both photoshop and indesign, only when exported as pdf it looks awful.
Any help will be greatly appreciated,
    Many thanks in advance!
    Weronika

It's probably the extreme reduction -- you're throwing away 90% of the image pixels and interpolating, and then using jpeg compression on top.

  • Place multiple pdfs into separate indesign and export to pdf again

Ok I have a lot of PDFs that I need to place into indesign in their own file, then re-export back as a PDF again.
Can anyone recommend a script for this if there is one? All the pdfs have different page counts etc. and I don't need to save the Indesign file.
I just want to put all the PDFs into their own InDesign file and reexport to PDF again. They are all A4 sized PDFs, 210 x 297mm.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks

    Thanks harbs
I need to Save all the pdfs as RTF, and some of the PDFs have bad tags and won't allow me to save as RTF.
I can batch process them in Acrobat to Print to PDF and that works for some, but not all the PDFs, it won't print some of them back to PDF.
I have 100's of these "bad pdfs" and it would be great to be able to place them all into separate indesign files and export out as pdf again. It will be tedious to run the PDF importer and export for all of the files.
I don't need to save the indesign file, just place and export the pdf again.
Just looking to automate the process.

Did you use the checkbox to automatically open the new PDF, or did you browse for it and open it "manually"? In the latter case: Check the creation date of this PDF. If it's not merely one or more minutes old, you probably saved the new PDF in an unexpected location.

  • Create unlimited folios today with InDesign CS5 and 5.5!

    Adobe's official statement
    http://blogs.adobe.com/digitalpublishing/2011/10/create-unlimited-folios-today-with-indesi gn-cs5-5.html
    Did you know…
Customers with InDesign CS5 and CS5.5 can now create an unlimited number of .folio files for no additional charge.
You already know that InDesign CS5 and CS5.5 integrate with Adobe Digital Publishing Suite to allow customers to publish apps to tablet devices such as the iPad, Xoom and PlayBook. But for InDesign CS5 and CS5.5 customers who are interested in creating content for tablet devices but are not yet customers, it is now easier than ever to try digital publishing before making the financial investment in the Digital Publishing Suite solution that meets your needs.
InDesign CS5 and CS5.5 customers can now:
Create an unlimited number of .folio files in InDesign
Preview them on Adobe Content Viewer  – including interactivity – to see how they will render when published to a tablet device
Share them with colleagues or clients on a 1:1 basis via the Adobe Content Viewer
Further, customers can now access the Folio Producer Service in the Digital Publishing Suite with a valid Adobe ID to manage and edit their .folio files. All of this can be done before purchasing Digital Publishing Suite.
If you are interested in learning how to create an App directly from InDesign CS5 or CS5.5, without writing code or depending on a developer, feel free to try it. You can pitch ideas to your client or your boss; or you can build a portfolio of your work and preview it on a tablet device. Practice makes perfect, and with an unlimited number of .folios, you can practice as much as you want! When you’re ready to publish to an app store, you can select the Digital Publishing Suite solution that is right for you.

I'm sorry EvBurk, what you want is intended not to work.
All Adobe's promotional material concerning InDesign and Digital Publishing (including the above "official statement") carefully uses verbs like "create" or "produce". But they never mention "distribute" or "spread", without explicitly referring to their exclusive hosting services. The whole Folio thing (in contrast to the former "issue" format) revolves around not giving you any chance of physically exporting, managing or owing the folio file itself. It's always somewhere on Adobe's or Apple's servers, or on your iPad, which is also as shut as a vault. So there's no way to export a folio file and toss it around like a pdf or jpeg. All you can do (without a paid distribution) is "share" your folio with some others, under the idea of "testing" and "reviewing". But this can be a cumbersome method. And even when paid (for the app), it's still difficult to distribute it outside Apple's or Android's market.
More than a year ago (in the middle of the Flash-on-iOS debate) Adobe users, developers, bloggers, and evangelists heavily criticized Apple's "walled garden". Adobe literally stated "We Love Apple - What we don't love is anybody taking away your freedom to choose what you create, how you create it, and what you experience on the web." Well, you could say now: "I love Adobe, but what I don't love is Adobe taking away my freedom to own my files, and distribute them on my own terms." They let us create, but not spread our ideas. It's like giving you a typewriter and copier, that only works with Adobe stock paper. Like giving you a voice and an instrument, but only allowing you to sing and play in some walled gardens (dress code: Apple ID) or secluded shed (invitation only).
I really wonder why they so fiercely protect 'their' Folio file. Why do they either have to be "under protection" or be turned into apps? I understand why Apple wants and needs to curate apps, but they don't mind me spreading my own ePubs, mp3 or jpegs. Why doesn't Adobe let me put my folio's on my own server, or send them off to someone with my own preferred service? The Content Viewer could easily be an Acrobat-like reader and let the iPad open folio's (by web links or mail enclosures) into it. If I see how many questions, worries, and problems creators and users have due to this whole closed technique and business, it would be easier to just let go and see what happens. Is it money? Of course it is. But my guess is that Adobe would eventually benefit more from it.
So I hope Adobe declares the Folio as an "open" standard soon, but they're definitely not in that stage. Maybe the specification of the file format just isn't ready yet. Maybe some managers need to remember again how to "Spread the Love"...

  • Line thickness problem in indesign CS5 and CS6

I use indesign CS5 and many short lines of 0.5 point in my project.
After export to pdf (press) everything seems correct. After rip process from printer office in compressed file lines seems to have different thickness even on large zoom (400%).
High quality pdf from rip prepared by printer office still shows small differences in thickness. Lines are in one solid color in my project.
What is the source of this problem? 0.5 point ines seems not extremely thin.
If the line is not sharp in pdf will it be not sharp in press?

I wouldn't go off what I see on screen. I'd be asking the printer for a hi-res proof. If that's not satisfactory they could run a test on offcuts on another print job to see where the problem lies.
One reason for different linethickness could be that the lines are interacting with transparent areas, giving the appearance of thicker, or could be physically changing the width by a few decimals.
I'd try putting any of the thin lines on their own layer - and perhaps try different PDF compatibilities, from PDF 1.3 to PDF 1.4 etc.

  • InDesign crashes while exporting to PDF

I have one PDF that after placing in InDesign cannot be exported to PDF
InDesign crashes on Windows and Macintosh, versions from CS3 to CC
Any ideas what can be wrong with my PDF?

I reckon you might find that you have font clashes as your PDF is being created. I had a similar issue a few weeks back where I had created a Brochure, sent it to the client, went through rounds of amends, and the final round of amends prior to print sign off was sent in a word document. When I opened the word doc, I copied and pasted the amends, all looked fine, so I created one last PDF... crash.
I ahve a suspicion that word auto-activated a font that didn't agree with fonts within the InDesign file. I deactivated many fonts, restarted my Mac and hey presto... sorted!
Now, the PDF that you imported into your InDesign file may well be the culprit activating a dodgy font, and this becomes a bit problematical. So, you could open it in Photoshop and save it as a high res image, or you could open it in Illustrator and hopefully all text has remained in place and will enable you to ouline fonts and save it as an illustrator file... BUT, you must advise and get your client to check the contents of the resultant file if you go down either of these routes.

When Peter says Move Pages, I beleive he means going to the Pages panel, selecting the flyout (triangle menu in upper-left), and selecting Move Page. Open a new document first and then change Move to: to your destination document.
    Not cutting and pasting.
Well, pretty much. I did mean use move pages as described , and you have to do that in the same version. If that fails, you can try copy/paste, but again, only in the same version. You cannot copy text objects and paste into a previous version as editable text, and I'm not certain other types of objects would make it, either. To move your text back to CS3 you would need to select and copy the actual text.

  • I can't get InDesign CS3 to export a pdf properly

    Hi all,
Actually I have resolved the problem but I thought I share with you all.
I have done up a booklet in CS2, containing 70 over TIFF images, all of them with clipping path done in Photoshop. In between this project, I upgraded to CS3 from CS2. After I amended and saved the .indd file to CS3 version, I encountered problem exporting the booklet to pdf. The pathed text and images were missing from the pdf.
    1. I tried export the pages to JPG, everything looks fine.
    2. Thinking probably the .indd file size is too big. I deleted some pages and export to pdf again. Same problem.
    3. Then I read in the forum that some users encounter problem with TIFF images with clipping paths done up in Photoshop. BUT since I have 70 over images to re-save to psd as some suggested, I decide to put it aside first, hoping it's not clipping path that causes the problem.
    4. Fed up and desperate. I started troubleshooting by deleting one element at a time and try export to pdf. Elements like path text, rounded corners boxes, color-filled boxes, etc.
    5. FINALLY, I found out it was the dotted outline that causes the problem. I successfully exported the pdf after I remove the dotted outline! But client has approved the design and layout, so I can't simply remove the dotted outline! Luckily, I still able to export to pdf without error after I re-applied the dotted lines to the boxes.
If you encounter the same problem as me, probably you want to try re-apply all the dotted or any fancy line by setting it to 0pt, then to your desire thickness again. =)
Please share how you resolve your PDF error too!

  • Indesign cs5 and photoshop cs5 preferences installed as one.

I have Indesign cs5 and adobe photoshop cs5 extended installed in my copmputer. I see those two programs as the largest installed applications in my computer. I just wonder that maybe some of the preferences of Indesign cs5 and photoshop cs5 are the same. I am thinking that these files are the reason why the two applications are very large.
For example the Adobe Bridge cs5, i think that Adobe Bridge is installed two times in my computer. One from the installation of Indesign and one is from the Photoshop.
I just want to know if there is a way to install the two applications having their preferences installed once and both applications could use them. I think in that way i can save a free space in my hard drive. Any help would be much appreciated.

You cannot save space on your hard drive by combining portions of these programs, no.
Their "preferences" take up a very small fraction of the space used by these programs.
Furthermore, they already have an extensive set of common (shared) files that are used by both programs that are installed outside the program directories for each program.
    Under Windows, that is C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe. For Mac, /Library/Application Support/Adobe.
    But no.
Also, hard drives are incredibly cheap. If you're worried about the size of these programs, you are doing something wrong and you're not going to be able to use them efficiently anyhow. In particular, effective use of photoshop needs many more times the size of the program in free space.
It's probably time to go and out buy several hundred GB (or some TB) of space.
