InDesign CS5, can't open file due to plugins problem

Hi folks!
I'm on Max OSX 10.5.8 and i am currently using a trial version of CS5 (Design Premium) while work sorts out the cash for the upgrade.
I work inhouse, and I needed to send an artwork file to an external design agency. I saved the file in CS5. The agency have CS5. When they open it, they get an error message to say they don't have the plugins needed to open it. We've never had any plugins, I'm not aware of any that would come with the trial that don't come with the bought version, so i don't know what to do.
Is there a way of saving a file without saving these "plugins" along with it? Or is there something else i can do?
Any help much appreciated

Well well guys, your experience in such matters prevails, after me emailing the agency mentioning again that it is a CS5 file and asking for a screenshot of the problem they came back and said they had figured it out themselves, turns out they are in the process of swapping all the team over to CS5 and the particular member that tried to open this file, was, yes, you guessed it, using CS4. Doh!
Many many thanks for your help!

  • CAN'T OPEN FILE. must upgrade plugins or to latest version?

    hi all
    im new to Indesign.
im trying to open files sent by client.
    we both use CS2 version.
When i go to open the file, I get a message box CANNOT OPEN FILE.
then there's a large list of things ending in .framework
and underneeth is a "!" and the message : cannopt open file.indd. Please upgrade
your plug ins to t heir latest versions or upgrade to the latest version of adobe indesign.
how do I do this? is it free somewhere?
    Please advice
    thank u

Make sure you are fully upgraded to the latest update of InDeisgn. I believe that is 4.0.5.688. And make sure your client really is using CS2 and not CS3. If they are using CS3 have them export an INX file for you. If you are certain they are using CS2 and problems continue, try the INX route anyway.
It is a very bad idea to continually transfer files between CS2 and CS3 users. If it turns out the client has CS3 then you should try to limit file transfers as much as possible or upgrade to CS3 yourself. You can install a free 30 day demo, which might last you long enough to finish this job.

  • InDesign CC can't open file - error: saved in newer version (CS7.0)

My coworker and I set up CC accounts last month (upgraded from CS5) but now when I'm trying to open a file she edited recently I get this error: "Cannot open "file name.indd" because it was saved with a newer version of Adobe InDesign (CS7.0). You must use that version or later to open the file. To then enable it to be opened in this version, choose Save As InDesign CS4 or later, or export to IDML."
Both are PCs. We are using the same software it seems so I'm confused as to the CS 7 version she is saving in and doesn't allow me to open the file.
    Any suggestions?

Here we see what happens because Adobe went for CC instead of CS7: people that have a Creative Cloud account get confused: 'a creative cloud must be version CC' - while it still can be CS6. Not the first time I've heard this confusion the last fee weeks...
Imagine later when hew versions come out and Adobe sticks to its plan to call all versions CC instead of CC1, CC2 etc.

  • InDesign CS5 hangs when opening files

I have recently begun experiencing a problem whereby I cannot open any existing InDesign documents. I can create new documents and work in them, but I cannot open any documents previously created in CS5.
InDesign CS5, MacBook Pro, Mountain Lion OS 10.8.2, Intel Corei7
The problem appeared shortly after the most recent Apple OS update so I suspect that may be causing this. InDesign just hangs with the beachball trying to open the file which it never does. It gets past linking files, then hangs. The problem has also occurred when I try to open files with InDesign CS6 on the same machine. I have tried to open a variety of different files and the problem still occurs so it doesn't seem to be file specific.
I encountered the problem a few days ago and somehow resolved it through a combination of trashing preferences, removing the SING folder and some font management. Today the problem returned and I can't seem to resolve it via any of those methods. All other Adobe CS5 and 6 apps work just fine.
I saw a post that recommended removing the SING plugin from InDesign's plug in folder so I tried that too. So far no luck.
I've attached the crash report and the Sample Process report from the Activity Monitor.

  • Error 6640 InDesign CS3 - Can't open files.

    Hello;
I can't seem to open, save or export any of my documents due to an Error Code: -6640 that pops up when I click on any of the folders in the 'Open File' box. The message reads:
"The operation could not be completed. There was a problem with selected file or folder. It might have been moved, renamed, or deleted."
I'm on Mac OS X 10.5.2. Has anyone encountered this and found a solution to remedy it?
    Thank you.
    Gregg

Update system to 10.5.4 and InDesign to 5.0.3 to begin with.

  • Can't open file due to "can't edit bank note" crap.

So i was working on a file using a $20 bill as a template to make a cool looking coupon.  Now, today, trying to open the file, it gives me this ********* pop up "can't edit bank notes" dialog box.  I'm not editing BANK NOTES!  How can i open this file or am i fuc***?

Sigh.  Creative people are supposed to be able to think for themselves...
What do we know at this point?
You're not going to be able to open it with Photoshop.  You can infer that there's not an "it's okay, I'm not a counterfeiter" switch.
It's because the image contains the EURion constellation.
If you're willing to start with a flattened document, you may be able to open it with another application - e.g., the freeware program IrfanView.  You have been told what to look for above.  Find those patterns and eliminate them, then you'll be able to open the result with Photoshop again.

  • Can't open files due to permissions

When I create an rtf file in text edit on my laptop, send it to my iMac, and try to open it on my iMac, it says I do not have permission. This is a regular standard text edit file. Why is it's default set to this?
When I go under privacy and permissions, and set everything to "real and write" for all users and administrators, it still has the same problem. How can I move text files between computers and still be able to open them?

Have you tried setting Ignore File Ownership on the drive?

  • Indesign 7.0.3 "can't open file"

Getting an error in InDesign.  "Can't open file as it is not an InDesign file, a plug in is missing, or it is open by another user."
We get this error, it goes away, and then returns.  Could happen on a file we've just had open!
The file(s) in question are InDesign (CS5 7.0.3) files.
    No plug ins are missing.
And it is not open by another user.

    Opening file from server.
    Deleting temp file didn't resolve.
    Moving to desktop didn't resolve.
Further details:  This problem originates on 1 computer (out of 4).  If that computer opens (or tries to open) a file, then the file becomes corrupt for all.

How do I update my InDesign CS3 plugins? I received a document from a colleague created in CS3 and I can't open it due to missing plugins.

  • InCopy CS5 can't open InDesign, InCopy CC can

I have CS5 to CC installed on my machine (MAC). Using indesign CS5 to create a layout then export all stories for inCopy. InCopy CS5 cannot open the indd. CC can... I can open the individual .icml files though. If I use InCopy CC, I can check in > edit > check out and save. InDesign CS5 will be able to re-open. A bit confuse now on why InCopy CS5 can't open InDesign files anymore. Event files created pre CC update. Attached are the errors I get when trying to open with InC CS5. Any insight would be appreciated! Thanks.

I know. That's why I don't understand. I really used CS5 to work with InCopy CS5. Even try older files that were saved prior to CC-CS6 update and I get the same error. Didn't have InCopy CS5. Install the demo version. Can it be the issue?

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.2 CS4 InDesign can't open files with a "#" in file path

Snow Leopard 10.6.2 CS4 InDesign can't open files with a "#" in file path using any of these perfectly normal methods:
    1. double-click file in the Finder (e.g in a Folder on your Mac or on your Mac desktop etc.)
    2. select file and choose "File... Open" command-o in the Finder
    3. drag file to the application icon in the Finder.
    4. Select file in Bridge and double-click, choose File.. Open.. or Drag icon to InDesign icon in dock.
If you try to open an ID file named with a "#", you will get an error message "Missing required parameter 'from' for event 'open.'"
This happens to any InDesign file that has a "#" (pound sign, number sign, or hash) in the filename or in the file path (any parent folder).
    To reproduce
Name an InDesign file Test#.idd Try to open it in the Finder or Bridge (as opposed to the "Open" dilaog of InDeisng itself).
    "Solution"
The file WILL open using File... Open... command-o while in InDesign application.
Rename the file or folders that have a "#" (shift-3) in the filename.
Report to Adobe if it bugs you.
This does not occur in "plain" Leopard 10.5 nor Tiger 10.4
Untested in Panther or before and
Untested with CS3 and earlier in Snow Leaopard.
Anyone have those and want to try this... ?

In case this really bothers you: we've added a workaround for this into Soxy. If you enable the option, these documents will open fine on double-click.
    You need Soxy 1.0.7 from:
    http://www.rorohiko.com/soxy
Go to the 'Soxy' - 'Preferences' - 'Other' dialog window, and enable 'Open InDesign via Script'
(Irrelevant background info (it's all invisible to the user): the workaround works by special-casing how Soxy opens documents in InDesign: instead of using AppleScript, Soxy will use ExtendScript to instruct InDesign to open the document - which works fine).

  • InDesign CS5 is not opening after deactivation/activation. How can I fix this? Illustrator and Photoshop open and are working fine. Please help!

InDesign CS5 is not opening after deactivation/activation. How can I fix this? Illustrator and Photoshop open and are working fine. Please help!

First of all, thank you for replying so promptly to my posts this morning!
I can't remember how I got the software on his computer, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't through migration assistant.
I was looking into doing an uninstall of InDesign and a fresh install. However, I initially downloaded the CS5 suite digitally and I can't find out how I am able to perform a fresh install of InDesign. Do you know where I find this info or gain access to download just InDesign again? I can't seem to find anything in my Adobe account that shows where I might do another download.

  • Can`t open files in CS5.1 Illustrator

I can`t open files in Ai CS5.1 . This problem has appeared the last week, I have been using this program every week for the last two years. The message I get is: The file was generated by a newer version of Illustrator.
I have tried to download CS6, but the message I get is: You don`t need this update.
So what can I do to make this work??

    jannemarete,
In addition to what Scott and PrintFusion said, the offending file(s) could have been created in either CS6 or CC.
In the latter case you will need to download the CC trial (you can use that for CS6 files as well, but there is no need to squander that option before you have some CC files do deal with).
The CC download can be made from this link:
    http://www.adobe.com/downloads.html?promoid=JZEFS
An easier option may be to ask for a CS5 version when you receive files from others with CS6 or CC. Also, if you do that, any version induced change in the files will be on them.

  • Can not open dreamweaver due to missing menu.xml file, how do I fix this problem?

Can not open dreamweaver due to missing menu.xml file, how do I fix this problem?

@alicia - We have seen such issues before
Allow me to quote David Powers from http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1192197
The menus.xml file is normally in your personal configuration folder. Before going to the trouble of reinstalling, try deleting your configuration folder. Details of how to find it are here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/494812.
When you launch Dreamweaver, it should build a new configuration folder.
