Indesign CS5 converting spot EPS or AI files to process

I have two EPS files placed in my cover layout that are being changed to CMYK. They are using a spot colour in the EPS file but they don't show as spot in Indesign. The separations don't list them. It's hard to say if this is a problem with Illustrator or Indesign, but it's a huge problem. Saving as AI doesn't help - same thing.

it seems to me that it's a bad idea to completely override a user's colour plate simply because of similar naming. If it's not a bug, it should at least warn you very obviously that your spot colours are being overridden by an end user. At the very least, it should be flagged by Preflighting. When you work with templates that are coming from other users or companies like this, it's not clear what's been converted, since you can have something marked as a spot but not be a pantone. You're assuming that the user has controlled every stage of a document workflow, which often isn't the case.
This is really bad to leave this as is. Like I said, if I hadn't scanned our plates on pre-press, I'd have a very angry Bell Canada as a client (not for much longer), who likely wouldn't want to pay full rate.

You can’t. You have upgrade or have whoever is send you files save as IDML. Don’t expect perfection.

InDesign CS5 for Mac crashes on opening file. Have replaced References and all other suggestions.

I am having a problem with InDesign CS5 crashing when I try to open a file that formerly opened just fine. Even restored versions from Time Machine or that I had a backup saved on an external hard drive will not open. I recently had to reconstruct a 90 page magazine for the same reason. I heard that Extensis Suitcase might be causing the problem so I disabled the plug-in, but still can't get the file open. The file in question is full of tables and would be a nightmare to redo. I am running Snow Leopard. It will open briefly and tell me that fonts are missing, then crash.

I have already disabled the Extensis plug-in and am activating the fonts
manually from within Extensis. It's the very latest version, Suitcase
Fusion 3, and it warps my chops that it doesn't play nice with InDesign.
I got rid of the Mindsteam grammar plug-in also and sent a tersely
worded letter to the vendor. When you pay nearly $200 for a plug-in, you
expect it to work. I don't have time for this aggravation! I truly
appreciate the help I've gotten here. This has certainly discouraged me
from using any third-party plug-ins. I was ready to go back to Quark
Xpress. For the moment, everything is behaving.

InDesign Cs5 keep crashing when open this file

Hi guys,
I am back for another problem with my InDesign. It's been a while since my last problem...
Right now I'm facing a new problem and I hope you guys can fix this with me..
So the problem is that just on this file.. Everytime I try to open it, it just crash. But it is fine when I open other files. Yesterday it was fine when I export as PDF, and even package the file. This morning when I tried to open it, it just crash...

Hi Peter,
I was trying to export it as .idml and the program crash, so maybe it says file cannot be open because missing maybe because it wasn't finish to export and got crash. Maybe that is why I can't open it.
well the thing is that my work InDesign Cs5 is bootleg (boo! i know )
and i was once told not to update them. so i never update until now..
unless you have a thread where i can read the manual how to update bootleg?

Can Indesign CS5 convert files for use on Kindle?

Hello,
Have any of you converted books for use on Kindle, and if so, how did you do it, and did it go smoothly? Please explain in "dummies" terms, as I find this topic to be very confusing.
If I convert files to ePub format in Ind. CS5, is this all I need to do to convert it to a format that can be used on a Kindle reader? Would this work for graphics as well as text?
Internet searches about this gave info for an older version, CS4, and seemed to require using supplemental software to successfully convert to Kindle format.

Yes, going to EPUB and then Kindle seems to be the best route.
A few suggestions.
1.       Upgrade to CS6. EPUB capabilities have been dramatically improved.

InDesign CS5 causing problems with InCopy assignment file but not content files

I'm having a strange InDesign/InCopy CS5 issue (Mac OSX 10.6.6; all system & Adobe updates are current). In my InDesign doc I have one assignment file containing two content files. All of the InCopy pieces work fine in InDesign (i.e., I can check out/in, edit, etc.). When I go to open the assignment file in InCopy, InCopy starts to open it but then crashes. If I try to open each content file directly in InCopy, no problem. I've tried deleting and recreating new assignments in InDesign, but they all have the same result in InCopy.
I think this actually is a problem with the InDesign file because if I export the InDesign file to IDML, then try to open the IDML file, InDesign crashes! I've trashed my InDesign preferences, made sure all cross-references are up to date, etc. Anybody have any ideas what else to look for in my InDesign file that might cause this problem?

2) That works. Moved all pages (frame threading was preserved) to a new doc, exported to IDML, opened new IDML file just fine. Woo hoo! One of my editors won't be pleased that all of the tracked changes have disappeared, but at least the file functions now
Wish I knew what caused the problem in the first place so we could (hopefully) prevent this from happening again. Any ideas?

InDesign CS5.5 Crashing After Opening a File

Hello,
After working on a file for a good amount of time in InDesign, the program crashed. I tried to reopen the file and after making a change or two it will crash again. It has progressed to do this continously, and at points freezing my whole system. I'm currently working on a file that is around 7MB, and is around 150 pages long. I do use several Master Pages, and have a Table of Contents within this document. The issue developed after I updated my Table of Contents.
I am running a Windows 7 (Home Premium) machine with 64-bit Operating System, on a HP G62.
I also attempted to run the file off of my WD My Passport (1GB) thinking it could have been my hard drive, but it still crashed.
The CS5.5 version I have is the Student and Teacher version, and I have had it since December 2011. I also check all of my other Adobe programs and they seem to be working fine. I attempted to check if InDesign was updated since it is on automatic updating and I had no luck since it crashed again.
I really need to get this issue solved quickly, since I use this program on a daily basis for work and an internship.

HI Peter,
I just wanted to let you know I think I fixed the problem. For some reason the file apparently became corrupt. Thanks to Dropbox and it's restorations I figured out that the last time I saved or the last work period that Dropbox has on account something happened. So I restored the file to the one before and it seems to be working fine. I have no clue what happened, but I'll just have to redo the work I lost. It also seems that some of my other InDesign files are working fine, which I should have checked before.

InDesign CS5.5 crashing when opening some files

I have been trying solutions posted for a week and haven't found one that works. Would appreciate any help anyone has.
A single page InDesign file will makes it to the window where it is attempting to load fonts, then crashes. However, file will open on a different comuter running same software, same versions and updates.
I removed all fonts from the document and it will open, which seems to point to a font problem. Odd thing is, other documents can be opened that are using the same fonts.
Have tried:
Upgrading to os 10.8
Running ID icons update
Removing and re-installing fonts
Removing and re-installing font manager software (font agent pro v4)
Restarting InDesign and trashing prefs
Running smasher
Running font nuke
Reparing permissions on computer
Removing SING files
And probably a few other things
This issue is affecting some but not all computers in a 30 computer environment.
All computers are on the same os version (10.7.4) , same InDesign version (5.5), some are using Font Agent 4 and some are on 5.
I have posted the crash report on pastebin.com, user bpozna, title indesign quit unexpectedly.
Would appreciate any help. Let me know if you need any additional info.

InDesign CS5.5 to Epub: Newly Bloated File?

I have an InDesign EBook File consisting of 25 chapters and many maps and photos, and up until now everything was hunky dory.
I'm using BookBaby as an aggregator because ISBN's are so much cheaper with them. I sent the preflight-checked, Caliber-passed Epub file to them and they bounced it back for a few problems. To comply with their requests, I changed all the InD file names to eliminate spaces, substituting_underscores. I had to redo the Table of Contents in the frontmatter, embedding hyperlinks to each of the book's chapter files (somehow my earlier work on this dropped off the file before I originally sent it to BookBaby).
Done with their requests, I doublechecked all the image files and doublechecked the inline placement of those scores of image files. To make sure that each InDesign file was as streamlined as it could be, as I've done earlier, I went into each of the 25 ID chapters to "Save As" with the same name, which should have eliminated everything nonessential. The InDesign book document then saved as a whole, I ran preflight pub checks several times, fixing what was necessary, until I got the row of green lights.
Then from ID I exported as an EPub. Using Caliber as my reader, everything checks. But to my horror, I noticed that the EPub file size had bloated from the 16 mb I had sent BookBaby originally to 54 mb!!! Obviously, I've done something terrible. I've been trying all day to figure this out and am despairing. The epub seems otherwise identical to the earlier, albeit flawed, version. Granted, I have a _lot_ of images. But why did I get by with 16 mb overall epub filesize, and why do I now have 54 mb? Perhaps it was in the 25 maneuvers I did to "Save As" each chapter file?

Using an .ai file in indesign cs5 with multiple artboards

I am working in indesign cs5 and I have a .ai file that I have linked. It only shows artboard 1, and not the other artboards. I know that if you go to objevt>objevt layer options you can toggle the layers, but how can I toggle artboards?

Ask the sender to Save As, then choose CS5 in the options, so you get a viable CS5 document.

Interactif file - Indesign CS5

A partir de Indesign CS5 je peux créer un document interactif en faisant exporter en swf. Seulement voila, je n'arrive pas à avoir une couverture, sans une page blanche à gauche (idem pour la 4e de couv). Cela pourrai marcher avec un fond transparent mais l'option qui permet de faire défiler les page se décoche ..
Y-a-t-il une solution ? C'est important car j'en ai besoin.

With Indesign CS5, I can create an interactif file. But i can't creat a cover, without a white page on the left (as for the 4th cover). It can be run with a transparent background but after i can't put the option to turn the page (I hope my english is not too bad ^^"")

The only possible invalid part of the file name would have to be an underscore, ie. Image_crop.psd
The files were stored on a removable drive - will try importing from the harddrive in a simply named folder. Thanks!

a tag is creating error in import XML in InDesign CS5.5

I am doing upgrade from InDesign CS2 to InDesign CS5.5.
I have indt file. It has been designed using the CS2 and now converted that indt file into CS5.5 using InDesign CS5.5.
But I am facing some serious issue while doing export to pdf in CS5.5 version.
I am following below steps:
1) Open indt file.
2) File Menu --> Import XML... [This XML file contains <a href="website link"> html tag]
3) XML Import Options [no change- defalut options selected]
4) Ideally it should merge this XML data with the indt file but it is asking me for some input and showing me "Find:" dialog [Check below snapshot]
I did some research and find out that I am getting this Find dialog because of the <a> tag in XML. when I removed the <a> tag from XML then it didn't give any dialog box and imported XML without any issue.
I am getting that xml from system and I cant remove the <a> tag from xml manually.
However I was not getting any error while doing import XML in CS2 version.
Please can anybody help in this?

When there is "http://" in anchor tag it will pop up this input window in manual export from indd/indt to pdf and it will failed in export through action script.
I communicated with the Adobe and it was bug. Adobe has confirmed that they would realease the patch for same sometime later, but I have not heard of anything. I got work around by removing it "http://" using java.

InDesign CS5.5 freezing upon opening new document Lion 10.7.3?

When launching CS5.5 InDesign, I select 'New document'. After it is setup (1-2 seconds), it freezes and InDesign is non functional and you have to force quit.
My console log states:
CFURLCreateWithBytes was passed these invalid URLBytes: ‘/Applications/Adobe InDesign CS5.5/Adobe InDesign CS5.5.app/Contents/Frameworks’ (a file system path instead of an URL string). The URL created will not work with most file URL functions. CFURLCreateFromFileSystemRepresentation should be used instead.
The freeze occurs in the admin account and logged in domain user.
I have tried updating InDesign- nothing.
Uninstalling through Adobe uninstaller and reinstalling- nothing.
Not using plugins. We are using Extensis Universal Type Client but I wuit it and turned off the Core to see if that helps- nothing.
Ive repair permissions- nothing
Rebooted- nothing
I ended up upgrading to CS6 and had no problems. I would like to resolve this CS5.5 issue though. Any help?

I copied Mac OS: [Startup Disk]/Library/Applications Support/Adobe/SING/Mark II/Datastore to the desktop and deleted it from that directory. Did the same for the Mark II folder (Solution 2)
-Failing that the first time, I uninstall/reinstall and didnt bother to update, which is why you see the original InDesign. I'll try and update InDesign and move to 10.7.4 to see if that does anything. My
Mac OS: [Startup Disk]/Library/Applications Support/Adobe/SING/Mark II/Datastore does not currently have these folders because I took them out. Maybe I'll run the crash report again and post it. I have to wait for the designer to finish for the day. I'll update possibly tomorrow.

Export Indesign CS5 to .fla CS4

Hi,
I have CS4 Web Premium version and CS5 InDesign (both for PC).
Is it possible to export down from InDesign to CS4 flash file? In the pulldown menu, I only have the CS5 .fla option (and obviously when I try to open it in Flash, it doesn't recognize it since it's a newer version than my Flash program).
I'm wanting to export my catalogs into Flash to see the possibilities there. I currently exporting them and using them as PDFs, which may or may not be the best option, but I want to see what other options there are.

I believe that InDesign CS5 will only export a FLA file that can be read in Flash Professional CS5.
If you knew someone who had InDesign CS4, you could create an IDML file which they could open in InDesign CS4. Then they could export an XFL file which could be opened in Flash CS4 Professional. (InDesign CS4 used an intermediate XML version called XFL; InDesign CS5 can actually export FLA.)

Start by reading the InDesign Help section on opening PageMaker files. It suggests some steps to do IN PAGEMAKER BEFORE you do the conversion:
•If the PageMaker file or its linked graphics are located on a network server, floppy disk, or removable drive, it may not open as expected if an interruption in data transfer occurs. To prevent data transfer problems, copy documents and their links to the hard disk, preferably in the same folder where the PageMaker publication is stored, before opening them in InDesign.
•You may want to use Save As in PageMaker to clear unnecessary hidden data.
•To ensure that all links are maintained, copy all linked files to the same folder where the PageMaker publication is stored.
•Make sure that all necessary fonts are available in InDesign.
•Repair broken graphics links in the PageMaker publication.
•If you have a problem converting a large PageMaker document, convert portions of the PageMaker file separately to isolate the problem.
