InDesign CS5 corrupted my file!

I'm using ID 7.0 on Mac OS 10.6.6. I have to open files over a network, and sure enough, a file that I was working on yesterday has somehow gotten corrupted. It crashes Indesign everytime. On one machine it complains about a database on another machine it just says that a "serious error was detected". Now I have to spend hours rebuilding the document unless anyone has a suggestion on how to uncorrupt a file.
I've looked throught the forums and tried several ideas, but nothing seems to work.

If you can't get your corporate IT to upgrade InDesign to 7.0.3, it's time to quit your job and get a new corporate.

Adobe has fixed a huge number of bugs and it's nearly pointless to be working with the released version of CS5. You need to communicate to your management that this is a serious issue and one that requires their attention.
It's actualy 2011. I think Peter is being a bit more negative than is warranted, but the point is really: networks can do things to files that applications have no control over. Usually as a result of the way the network and the operating system interact. Typically there is nothing the application can do to prevent this corruption. (Or sometimes the choices it can make are really baroque and painful. Like instead of making a change to a 5mb file in place by seeking to the middle of the file and writing one byte, it has to copy the entire 5mb file. This is going to be more reliable on the broken networks, but it also means everyone with a working network will have to wait ~10 seconds for their file to save instead of 10 milliseconds. Not a good trade-off. And there's no way for InDesign to know the network is flaky/touchy/goofy.)
You didn't anwer if you had tried saving via IDML. That is your last and best hope.
Also, you didn't tell us what happens to cause the crash. Is it instantly upon opening the file? After working with it for a few minutes? While dragging a box? Going to a certain page? Typing a character? Context is important.
You probably are better off rebuilding the file from scratch. But if you don't upgrade InDesign, it will probably just happen again.
(on the other hand, 7.0.4 is about to be released. If getting an upgrade requires selling your soul to the IT department, you might want to wait a little bit until its out. On the other hand, sometimes selling a soul takes a few months to get the mortgage brokers in line and it's not over until the closing, so getting started now on the painful political process might be better.)

Indesign CS5 with PNG file exporting as a PDF file but the text is random bold

I am looking for help to teach me how to solve this problem.
I use Indesign CS5 to make a proposal. I set the page marker and sub title in the master page.
Of course, there are including dozens of pages and some pictures here.
And one of these page, I place a PNG file and type some text.
When I export this file as a PDF file, one page, which is including PNG file, the text becomes random bold.
Therefore, I have used PSD file to cover the PNG file. But finally getting the same problem.
So does anyone can help me how to solve this problem?

This sounds like a known issue with transparency on the page. When transparency is introduced ID uses a differnt method, apparently, of rendering text on that page and it appears bolder on screen and can print that way on low resolution devices like desktop printers. It usually is not a problem on press output.
The only way to mainatian consistency would be to introduce transparency on all pages, perhaps by adding a transparent object to your master page.

what patch? i have to get a patch for each version THEY have? my editor sent me an indesign file from an older version also and could not open that.
after much searching, i did what some suggeted and bought SOXY software for $20, acting like a filter, and it worked great this weekend, not sure if the OTHERS will be able to RE-open the files but that's their business, i guess. i'm angry at adobe for not having a go-between for this. i've been advised to NOT go searching after the long list of plug-ins but if you know of a patch or update that will fix these i would be eternally grateful!

Linking URLs to InDesign CS5 exported .swf files

I primarily work in print design, but I've exported a few animated .swf files of web banner ads from InDesign CS5, and the folks on the receiving end can't use them because they're unable to link them to a URL (in whatever manner they're able to with other Flash files). I was hopeful that I could open the files in Flash and edit them there, but it seems not to be an editable file. It's been pretty frustrating watching work go down the drain and people have to settle for less glamorous static ads. Does anybody know a solution?

I think I may have responded to this in the community help section, but I'll repeat what I said there. InDesign has some impressive Flash capabilities but using it to create an entire website....no, not a good idea at all.
The size of the SWF files is a major issue and they are quite simply not suitable for this purpose. Additionally, an entire website in Flash is an SEO nightmare so it won't matter how long it takes to load since nobody is likely to find it.
Flash should be used judiciously on the web. In fact, I never use it. All that said, the only advice I can offer if you decide to ignore the rest of it, is to export to FLA, open it in Flash Professional and finish it up there.

Making InDesign CS5.5 default file opener?

Hi there,
I have InDesign CS5.5 installed on my PC (Windows 7). Yesterday I installed Adobe Creative Suite 3 to add Photoshop CS3 as Photoshop Elements 9 doesn't do CMYK. Now all my InDesign documents are attempting to open automatically in InDesign CS3 (which is part of the old Suite bundle).
How do I change settings (I tried associating file type with program, no joy) so that InDesign files open in CS5.5 by default?

Try reassociating the INDD files with CS5.5 by right clicking an INDD file and choosing open with. Browse to the EXE for InDesign CS5.5. This may or may not work.
Installing out of order is not a very good idea. You may well be better off uninstalling everything and reinstalling in order.

InDesign CS5.5 - GIANT file size?

Hi there,
I am working on a book interior in InDesign CS5.5 and saving different versions when I make corrections. The problem is that the file started off close to 10mb then randomly jumped up to 1.67gb, the file contains no images and shouldn't be more than 40mb.
I have tried using the "Save As" feature (after doing some research) and the file size dropped to 850mb...this is still an abominably large file size for just text.
Does anyone have any solutions/advice?

I exported to an IDML, opened it up and used the Save As again...now my file is back to 6mb!

Issue with InDesign cs5 and network files.

On Mavericks having issues with InDesign CS5. When trying to open a file from an smb netwrok drive it goes into Not responding.
have tested InDesign working correctly with local files.
have tried removing, SING folder. tried reinstalling.
all updates on OS and adobe InDesign have been installed.
any suggestions would be appreciated.

CS5 is unsupported under Mavericks.

Bridge CS5 corrupts CR2 files when extracting thumbnails (Win8.1 64bit)

I'm using Design Premium CS5 on two computers - Lenovo T510 with Windows 7 (64 bit) and a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro with Windows 8.1 (64 bit). Everything works fine on the Win 7 machine. On the Yoga, if I download Raw files, they look fine until Bridge begins extracting thumbnails. Once that process begins, most of the files are corrupted, becoming bands and boxes of color:
I tried updating the software, reinstalling, and opening the files in Camera Raw and Photoshop. Nothing seems to change the outcome. I continue to be able to use the Win 7 machine with no problems. I intended the Yoga to be my travel computer for trips in which photography will be the main focus. Given this problem, I only see two solutions unless I'm able to fix it. One is to carry either only the Win 7 computer or both computers. The other is to not open the files into Bridge and take it on faith that the photos were successfully downloaded before formatting my media. Neither of those solutions is very satisfactory. I hope someone out there can help me find a solution that will make the Yoga work as I had hoped. FYI, JPEGs work fine. I suppose that would be another solution: only shoot in JPEG.

I have already tried what you suggested but it didn't work at first. I will try it again just to see if it works this time but to be frank I don't expect it will.
Another problem is the fact that I didn't have this issue with CS4 which is the version you are using. The problem appeared once I switched to CS5. The fact that your issue was resolved in CS4 is no guarantee the same will happen to CS5. In fact, it is almost a given it will not considering Adobe's track record with Bridge. Every new version of Bridge brings along with it a new set of problems and challenges. I am really getting tired of it. Now please keep in mind that my collection of images includes a few thousands of folders each containing anywhere between 200 and 1000 images. Adobe shouldn't have to force a customer to have to purge the cache and rebuild all previews when this customer (as it is my case) has thousands of folders and/or images. This is just insane.
They really need to get this application working right. One would imagine that it would have happened by now since they have already had 5 versions of this application to do it plus the file browser application experience before Bridge was formally introduced. So, what is happening Adobe ???

CS5, corrupted .fla file

I recently got Flash CS5 a couple days ago. I moved a large .fla file that I'd been working on in Flash 8 into CS5 yesterday and I've been working smoothly with it since then. (I converted it to CS5 format of course)
Suddenly, today, CS5 crashed when I tried to copy/paste a symbol into another file's library. The file I had been working in is now corrupted, since CS5 crashes every time I try to open that file.
I have been working with flash (Flash 8 professional) for four years, and I have never once experienced anything like this. Crashes, sure - but flash8 never corrupted an fla file. Four years, no problems. Two days with CS5 and all of my work in the program is down the drain.
This is very frustrating. Is there anything I can do to save my .fla file, or is this something that I just have to learn to work around?

If you have any kind of backup arranged for your machine, see about restoring the file. If you don't have any kind of backup, then for the future make it a practice to save older versions as backup on a somewhat regular basis.
When you start editing files try to make it a habit to save new copies rather than sacving over older files.
When you have files that involve customers, value, or extensive effort, you should keep multiple copies on different media/storage devices. Every so often I save files and whatnot to dvd data disks.
As far as recovering the file that keeps crashing, try entering some terms like "restore corrupted file" in the top of the forum where it says Ask a Question and see if any results come up that lead to some help. I remember someone recently talking about renaming files or some such thing and opening them, though you'd need to find it to try it properly.

CS5 corrupts CS4 files

Sorry, I'm sure this has been covered but I cannot find it.
I have CS5 updated to 11.0.2.489
When I open CS4 files, save them as CS5, close, open the CS5 file, some of the folders are corrupt. This is not one file, this is all my files. I also cannot copy from one fla into another. The movie clip will come over but it will be empty.
I have seen the blog posts about how to fix a corrupted file, but it's indepth and time consuming. I do not want to do this to hundreds of my files. Please advise on a fix.

Found the case of this corruption.
It appears in CS5 that you can't name folder libraries the same way. In the past I've numbered off directories (1) or [1] Description.. something to that effect. Those directories will in effect duplicate to a new gibberish named directory and the original will appear empty. Because of this the stage will also appear empty. Even creating a new folder in CS5 will the bad naming convention, then creating a new movie clip into that folder will imediatly cause a duplicate object conflict.
I'm not sure if it's the { ( or space...I'm just seating away from that naming all together.

Indesign CS5 won't install

Background:
I had been using InDesign CS5 for a couple years on my Win7 Ultimate x64 machine.   A year and a half ago, I reloaded the OS and didn't reinstall InDesign as I didn't need it then. It's used for a once-yearly project near year-end. My InDesign CS5 is the Pagemaker upgrade, - the install is from the download file gotten via the download manager when licensed from Adobe in 2010. I think it had updated to CS5.5 during that period but I don't have any files to install CS5.5,
Problem:
Tried to re-install it now, and the installer fails. It accepts the serial number but does not complete: ***I've attached the complete list of error messages at the end of this post. I've tried the install multiple times - initially with all the InDesign bells and whistles, then reboot and retried, and then again after rebooting a second time with none of the InDesign extensions chosen (thinking maybe one of those might be the cause) but no changes in symptoms.
Discussion:
I am thinking it is either something fundamental with InDesign CS5 conflicting with some Win7 update since the time when InDesign CS5 worked, or an interaction with the other Adobe products.
Other Adobe products on the machine:
Added after the time InDesign had worked
      Lightroom 3.6, Lightroom 5.7, and Adobe DNG converter.
Had been on, back when it all worked fine:
Photoshop CS5, Dreamweaver CS3, Acrobat 8 Standard and Adobe Reader XI. Helper apps are: Bridge CS3 and CS5, Extension Manager CS3 and CS5, Extendscript Toolkit 2 and CS5 and Device Central CS3 and CS5.

Sorry I didn't get back with you. Thanks for your help. I tried using compatibility mode - no change. Needed to then go through your CCleaner process. Uninstalled everything, did the CCleaner and then reinstalled in release order (most recent versions last).   At that point, all the programs worked fine but would not update. To get update working again, needed to find the link to the current standalone Application Manager exe file. Ran that and now all is right as rain.

InDesign CS5 won't install Mac OSX Mavericks

I am currently trying to re-install InDesign CS5 (part of CS5 Design Standard) on an iMac at work because of a problem it was having. I now can't get it to install at all on the mac. I have tried from both the original DVD and from the download from the adobe website.
I have updated the Java but no success with that.
I have uninstalled the whole suite and re-installed but Indesign is the only application that fails.

Page numbering in InDesign CS5.5 not working

21 Chapters have been added to InDesign CS5.5's Book File feature. However, only the individual chapter numbers are shown, not the cumulative numbering system. Can anyone please help resolve this issue.

Eugene, sorry I can see how my question is not clear. My issue is this: I've added 21 chapters of a book to InDesign CS5.5 Book File. When I did so I expected all the chapters to paginate with consecutive numbering. But all I see in the column beside the chapter title are the page numbers (folio) that were created in each chapter. Since all my chapters start on the right hand page the beginning number is alway 2. Each chapter has used the same Master pages template and are spreads.

InDesign CS5 won't launch - missing plug-ins

InDesign CS5 won’t launch on Windows 7. I get the following error messages:
Cannot load the LINKS.RPLN plug-in
Cannot load the FONT USAGE DIALOG.RPLN plug-in
Cannot load the XMEDIA UI.RPLN plug-in
After these error messages InDesign crashes.
Do I need to reinstall the plug-ins?
If yes, how do I do that?

I couldn't find a repair option so tried to reinstall InDesign as you've suggested. This doesen't seem to work either, as I received the following installation error:

Indesign CS5 Crash on install (with Log)

Looking back through the log I see the unable to move entry reates tothe file being in use. Perhaps there is somthing on the laptop running in the background that needs to be turned off.
I'd remove CS5, run the clean tool, reboot, run MSConfig and turn off all non-essential startups and services, especioally antivirus and spyware scanners, iTunes, browser helpers and toolbars, and messengers, reboot again, reinstall, then run MSConfig again to restore normal boot. Have the computer using a local printer as default during install.
