InDesign Cs5 displayed with wrong resolution (doesn't work in 1920x1080)

Hello everybody
I've encountered a resolution issue concerning Indesign CS5 (and Illustrator CS5). The problem only concerns my brandnew laptop running under Windows 8.1 (Screen Resolution 1920x1080). On my other, older PC (with the same native screen resolution), but running under Windows 7, the problem doesn't exist.
The problem consists in the fact, that Indesign CS5, even though everything else is displayed in 1920x1080 is displayed in some lower resolution, making a good workflow impossible, *** the texts I write are not very readable if I want the whole page displayed (and it's ugly). In other Adobe CS5 Apps, like Photoshop CS5, this problem does not occur. It doesn't also occur in the trial version of Indesign CC, but I cannot afford paying over 30€ per month just to be able to work with an acceptable work resolution. (That should really be included in the price I paid for CS5.)
To see what I mean, here are the links to 2 screenshots taken of those 2 Apps, with exactly the same screen settings:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4786930/Photoshop%20CS5%20Screenshot%20Windows%208-1.j pg
Is there any workaround known for this problem? It is driving me crazy
Best regards,
Frank

What's bizar is that other applications work perfectly fine at the right resoution (like photoshop CS5 for example). The screen runs at its native resolution. The rest of the program works "fine" (except its uglyness because it somehow doesn't display in 1920x1080 even though that are the native settings of the screen.)
What do you mean exactly by running the laptop at 100% for the UI? I did not use any other programs and the laptop is brandnew. Actually CS5 is the first application I installed...

  • InDesign CS5 Crashes with Warning Dialog Box

    Hello,
    Facts:
    InDesign CS5, v7.0.4
    OS X 10.7.4
    No third-party font-management application running.
    Macbook Pro (June, 2012)
InDesign crashes in these two instances:
    1. Trying to delete a page that has content. Right as the warning box comes up, it shows up without content (just the "Warning" title) and crashes.
    2. When packaging a file, as it's about to warn you about the perils of archiving fonts it does the same thing as above, and crashes.
Tried the alt-opt-cmd-shift trick to reboot preferences and nothing.
Tried deleting the two preference files directly so that they would rebuild and nothing.
Interestingly, I have another computer running OS 10.7.3 (as opposed to 10.7.4 on the crashy one) and the same InDesign CS5 7.0.4 and that one works perfectly.
    Ideas? Leads?
    Thanks

After 2 days straight, I FIGURED IT OUT!!!! I was trying everything, especially related to font book and fonts and resetting prefs, etc...
I narrowed it down to 1 constant variable: it's happening on the 2012 macbook's, so I reset my mac and held command + R and re-installed Lion, then I DID NOT INSTALL THE UPDATE FOR THE MACBOOK 2012. Then I tried exporting a smallest file size pdf with overset text and also tried deleting a page with an object on it and BAM! No blank warning dialog and even more importantly: NO MORE CRASHES!!! Hey, I might not lose all my clients afterall!
got the good ol' warning box we all love and missed:
    Again:
    - power off mac and turn back on while holding down Command + R (dont do it on an external keyboard just to be safe)
    - choose the re-install Lion option (I'm sure there is another way to re-install Lion, this is just the way I did it, not saying its the best or only method)
    - DO NOT INSTALL MACBOOK (Mid 2012) Software Update 1.0 - THIS SCREWS ADOBE UP!
After you guys try this please let us know how your system is operating, I am noticing my macbook pro is so slow and when trying to send an email and choosing an email to reply to and attach something,etc.. each click triggers the beachball and I gotta wait a few moments..?? I'm sure we might be missing out on some good updates from not updating to the 1.0 software update....but....
    So my final question is:
is this Apple's problem or Adobe's and who needs to do what here??? Why can't we all get along...

how will CC effect my current project and will i be able to share the file ?

It could be a one way trip.
There have been instances where your older version was more stable for CC as an exported idml.
Prior to ver 7 (?) text engines were occasionally updated which would cause text to reflow in later versions.

iTunes 10.4 full screen with Win7-64 doesn't work correctly. I have the Windows taskbar on the left side of my screen. Maximized iTunes is panned to the left.

Same issue here. When the Windows taskbar is position on the top of the screen and then the iTunes windows is maximised, it's position is as if the Windows taskbar is at the bottom of the screen so the top of the iTunes window sits under the taskbar.
For those wanting a workaround, hold shift and right click the iTunes icon in the taskbar/quick launch bar and click restore, at least then you can adjust it to be full screen manually.

  • LAN with TCP/IP doesn't work

    Hello,
I have a problem with my laptop IdeaPad S10e 4187-5PG: LAN with TCP/IP doesn't work, after I have updated all the drivers to the latest ones form the Lenovo site (except BIOS update). I tried to check if LAN worksby sending a ping to the IP address and that is OK, but when Isend a ping to the default gateway it failes. A ping to the DNS server also fails.Could you please help me because I tried everythinh and I can't getthe LAN to work.
    Thank you very much

Perhaps you could describe you network in a little more detail.
Is this a Workgroup home network or are you connected to a Domain server?
If this is a workgroup are you connecting to the internet via a cable or DSL router?
Do other computers on your network connect OK?
Has your S10e ever worked properly on the network?
Are you connecting via a wireless access point or LAN cable?
What do you Ping on and from where?
Can you Ping OK on another networked computer?
Open up a DOS Prompt (aka command prompt, DOS Box). and type IPCONFIG  /ALL <enter>. Do you get a compatible IP address and subnet mask? You should also get the gateway IP address.

Comcast came to fix my internet. My AIRPORTWIFI now only works with desktop. it doesn't work with my IPhone or IPad. Why? What can I do?

    Hello lila54,
It sounds like your Wi-Fi network is working if your desktop works with it, we just need to get the Wi-Fi on your iPhone and iPad connected to it.  I found a couple of resources to help with not being able to connect to Wi-Fi on an iOS device.
I recommend following the steps in this tutorial first (the steps should work on the iPhone and iPad):
    Join a network
    http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/assistant/wifi/
If you are still having trouble connecting to Wi-Fi, follow the steps in this article (you can skip any steps you have already taken):

Try telling students who barely have two nickels to rub together these days that they have to outlay $400-500 dollars every year to be able to keep up to date with the programs at their schools. I can barely get these kids to package their files properly and now they have to remember to export their files to idml and remember to put them in their folders before they copy it onto their external hard drive to bring it home to work on. Is it really necessary to update every bloody year and charge these kids so much to upgrade. And this time only for a .5 upgrade?  A lot of these kids have parents that are sacrificing every thing to pay for their kids college education. What message is adobe sending to these kids? That the study of graphic design is only for the rich who can afford to upgrade every year. Have a heart in this economy.
Your points about the hardship of expensive learning materials, and the extra work involved in saving to IDML, are all valid.
If/when online applications come into common use, some of the issues may fade away, because the newest and older versions will always be available for a user to choose from.
In the meantime, perhaps some of these suggestions will be useful:
    * Adobe's volume licensing plan (VLP, I think) and transactional licensing plan (TLP) have been mentioned in this forum, in regard to the option of buying licenses for earlier releases. My thought is that your school could "freeze" their installations at a useful recent release, to extend the useful life of a student's own purchased educational copy. Search Google for terms like "InDesign volume license transactional license" without quotes. Also, perhaps someone who knows more about these options will jump in here.
    * Unless there are compelling class needs for the new features in new releases, there's no need to upgrade. Depending on the course's level, some features wouldn't be needed for lower-level classes; for the higher-level classes, use the newer software.
    * If possible, allow students to install DropBox, or other  online storage software, on the school computers, so they can save files remotely, and access them from any Internet connection. This won't eliminate the saving to IDML step, but it can eliminate the copy-to-transport-media step, simplifying things a bit. There may be security and other IT issues here to be worked out.
    * For students who intend to enter the design career, it may be less expensive to buy an upgradeable non-educational license, or even - shudder - a subscription. Subscriptions, I believe, can be activated and deactivated for specific periods, like rental cars, so, for example, if/when a student graduates and takes a job where the employer provides the software, or the student doesn't need the software for a semester or quarter, the subscription can be idled, and there's no cost. If the student becomes an independent designer, the subscription can be reactivated when there's work to be done. I believe Bob Levine once posted a comparison, on this forum, of cost-to-license InDesign, for subscriptions vs. other licensing methods. Bob?
Sometimes folks compare the ongoing cost of software and upgrades to other industries and careers that don't seem to have the same issues. However, the tools needed in many industries and careers are no longer so static, as in the past. Carpenters who worked with manual tools could use hammers, screwdrivers, etc., until they wore out or broke, but  the introduction of electric nail drivers, screwdrivers, and drills forced production carpenters to upgrade their tools. Perhaps the increased output of mechanized tools balanced their increased cost. Draftsmen's triangles, T-squares, pens, etc., don't need upgrades, but there have been about 20 AutoCAD software releases for them to keep up with.
Recently I had to replace my 1991 stick-shift car with a "new-to-me" 2005 model. It's like all the newer cars I've rented at times - automatic everything. I've done most maintenance and repair on the old one, and I always carried tools in case something broke on the road, and I could fix it myself. The new car is a disaster; the only fixing and maintenance I might possibly do is change a flat tire, add fuel, window-washer juice, oil, power brake and steering fluids, wash the exterior, vacuum the interior, set radio-station presets, and change the battery in the remote-control device that opens and locks the doors, and activates the entire computerized beast. There's nothing for me to do but open the doors, get in, turn on the engine, and aim in some direction.
Mechanics, whose basic-level wrenches and ignition-timing strobe lights were capable of doing an amazing range of tasks over decades of model changes, now need annual expensive software upgrades for the computerized tools that troubleshoot and maintain the modern rolling computers that have replaced cars as some of us knew them.

  • Indesign CS5 Crashes with Incopy Workflow

I work for a large publishing company that publishes thousands of titles per year. Several divisions use Indesign, but only our Publishing Division uses the Indesign/Incopy workflow, and they are the only division experiencing widespread crashing in CS5. The divisions who do not use Incopy are not crashing. Here's what we know causes the crashing in Indesign CS5:
    1. Exporting stories to Incopy. This is a widespread, yet inconsistent problem. One time you crash, the next time you don't. We've done the IDML export to CS4, reopened the files and saved as CS5. This helped with some files, but not others. I talking about hundreds of different publications and files. All people are patched to the newest version. Some are on Snow Leopard and some are not. However, I'm on Snow Leopard and the crashing does happen on my computer too (sometimes). The problem continues. I've found workaround for some problems, but there's no workaround for exporting to Incopy. It's something you have to do in this workflow.
    2. Saving an Indesign files with an Incopy story checked out. This will cause a crash almost every time. We've been in the Indesign/Incopy workflow since CS2 and never had this problem in the past. This is an easy fix; just make sure you check in stories before saving, but it's a hard habit for some to break.
These issues have been reported to Adobe, with absolutely NO explanation or resolution. After six years in this workflow, I'm at the point of having to consider abandoning Incopy -- not an easy thing to do in such a large organization.

  • Re: Is InDesign CS5 Compatible With Latest Apple OS?

I am currently licensed to use my copy of InDesign CS5 on my iMac and my MacBook. I'm thinking about replacing my MacBook with a new laptop from Apple to take advantage of our state's tax holiday this coming weekend. I would, of course, want to migrate InDesign from my old laptop to my new one. My current MacBook is over three years old and runs on OS 10.6.8. My question is, if I buy a new Apple laptop with the very latest operating software, would InDesign CS5 still work with such an advanced OS? Is there any danger of me losing access to the files I've already created? Would I have to upgrade InDesign to CS6? Does Adobe even offer upgrades now that they have introduced the Creative Cloud? Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Bob. I appreciate you taking the time to answer my question. It was very helpful.
Actually, if I purchase a new laptop, I was planning on installing InDesign using the original media. I just meant that, since I am only licensed to use InDesign on two devices at a time, I would need to discontinue its use on my old laptop in order to be able to use it on my new one. (I plan on continuing on using InDesign on my desktop for the time being.) But this leads me to another question: Wouid I have to discontinue InDesign on my old laptop BEFORE installing it on my new laptop? If so, what would I do if it turns out that InDesign CS5 doesn't work on the latest Mac OS? I could switch to a Creative Cloud subscription as you suggest -- but I was hoping not to have to spend any more money. If I did have to switch to the Cloud, would I still be able to access and work on the files I created in CS5?
Thanks again for all your help.

  • Multiple displays with different resolutions

The system is setup with two non-mirrored displays with the following resolutions: A) 1024x768 and B) 1280x1024 arranged as BA with A the menu'd display using an ATI 9000 Pro for Mac. During startup, approximately once inch worth of the menu's right items momentarily appear on the right side of display B 768 pixels down from the top. This problem only occurs in this BA configuration of differing resolutions and is independent of graphics cards (substituted the 9000 Pro with a mirror only AGP Navidia card and a mirror only PCI ATI Rage card combination which gave the same result). This problem first appeared using MacOS 10.3 which displayed several inches of menu instead of only an inch under MacOS 10.4. Anyone else seen this problem?
Dual 800 MHz QuickSilver   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Over the weekend, I explained this problem to one of the Apple Geniuses at an Apple store and then was able to duplicate the issue using a lap top and attached monitor in the store (not the same resolutions as my system; but, screens of similarly different resolutions). I raise this issue again because, as of late, additional things have been happening and I wonder if these are related to the core issue of an expanded desktop with two different screen resolutions. All of the widgets on the larger resolution screen desktop are drawing in the menu located in the smaller resolution screen when hitting the "i" to gain access to its control panel; however, not effecting the menu at all when moved to the smaller resolution screen. The other has to do with screen savers periodically blanking both monitors (as though the graphics card went to sleep) or having both monitors lose syncing (first occurrence today) where a cold start is required to bring the monitors on line again (I am going to have to figure out a way to test if the system is actually sleeping or the monitors have only gone blank before cold starting the system).

  • Japanese characters display with wrong encoding all of a sudden...

I had no issues before when it came to typing in Japanese in DW using the windows language bar , I would just change the keyboard to JP(japanese) and then start typing within DW code view, but then one day after doing updating my main template and using the find and replace feature in DW all the Japanese characters turned into question marks, diamonds with question marks and ASCII alphanumeric codes..
also the spaces in my documents  turned into blocks. It was a mess,
*I don't know if it was something I triggered accidentaly or if it was some type of bug....I also remember copying and pasting text and Japanese characters from another website that I created(but I had done that a dozen times before and it was never a problem).
Long story short, after not being able to find a solution I decided to manually delete the weird symbols and start over, I typed in Japanese using the windows language bar as always and began typing away inside the same pages that displayed those weird characters (sorry I don't know what the proper name for them is)and it accepted the Japanese characters with no issues, it was working just like it did before.
but my question is "What happened?" was that a bug in DW or was it something on my end?
I would like to know so I can fix the problem incase this happens again.
I've always had utf-8 as the charset and it's never been an issue. (and I all my pages are saved as utf-8 as well)
--Which is why I am confused why all the Japanese got messed up.
Here is the head code of one of the pages that had the problem:
    Thank you.

Without seeing an actual page, it's impossible to say what happened, but the most likely explanation is that you did something wrong. Asian characters, such as Japanese, require correct encoding. If the encoding is incorrect, you end up with mojibake.
I suspect that what happened is that you copied and pasted from Shift-JIS or EUC-JP encoding into a different encoding. It's quite possible that your page was set to iso-8859-1 (Western European) without realizing.
By the way, your head code didn't show up in your post.
