Indesign CS5 Duplex printing Postscript file

I am designing a book half english half spanish—It is an instruction manual so you read the english then flip it and read the spanish.
In my Indesign CS5 document pages 1-30 are English then 30-1 again are spanish (upside down). I need to export them as a postscript file so that I can print it double sided correctly for a mock up.
I am making multiples of these books and only some are exporting to a postscript correctly and I cannot figure out why.
When exported to postscript correctly, it should look as if the left page is the cover in english and directly to the right of it is spanish but upside down, and then it alternates all the way to the end. So for example:
Spread 1: English on left right side up, Spanish on right upside down.
Spread 2: Spanish on left, English on right
Spread 3: English on left, Spanish on right.. and so on
But, some, are exporting so it shows a cover, then a blank page, and all the pages are jumbled up. (I do have "do not include blank pages ticked when exporting to postscript)
The only guess I have is that it has to do with the page and section numbering? I don't know if this effects how the postscript converts or not. But, I have several books exporting very differently to post script. Please let me know if anyone can help me figure this out!

I had a brief PM conversation with Stephen this morning, and it just hit me that I may have been thinking about this incorrectly. There are actually two approaches to this kind of document.
The approach I've been envisioning presents the reader with all the text on only the right-hand pages -- the lefts are all the other language upside down. But thinking back to my youth and buying some two-title sci-fi paperbacks, I think those were built so that if you tore apart the binding in the center of the book you'd wind up with two "normal" books without back covers, and there would be no page overlap between the two titles.
I'm guessing that the OP actually means to do the second, and I apologize for being dense yesterday. Seems like it was happening all week. If that's true (I mean the binding layout, not my being dense), then I understand what you were saying about Print Booklet, and there's actually a pretty easy way to make this work, I think without a plugin (though IDImposer might turn out to be even easier).
Here's the approach I would use to make a single book that can be cut apart to make two independent volumes:
First, download Scott Zanelli's Multipage Importer script from InDesignSecrets » Blog Archive » Zanelli Releases MultiPageImporter for Importing both PDF and INDD Files The script allows you to automate placing multiple pages from either a PDF or another .indd file into a new .indd doc, and it allows you to select the page range to import, the page on which to start placing, and allows scaling, rotation and alignment adjustments.
Since you have two 30-page sections, make a new 60-page file. The first time you run the script, place the first 30 pages normally, starting on page 1. Now run the script again, choosing the range 31-60, but do the following: check the Reverse Page Order box, Start Placing on Doument Page 31, and Rotate 180:
You can run this new file trough Print booklet.
The original content in the new file cannot be edited directly other than moving pages around or cropping/sizing/repostioning the page images. If you need to make text changes or other edits, do them ithe original, then update the links.

  • Printing postscript files

I have been able for years to print postscript files (*.ps) stored in a desktop folder by dragging them to the desktop printer (HP 4600) in os 9.
New to Tiger, I find the same approach leads to two problems:
the files are printing in reverse order (i.e., files "A.ps", "B.ps", "C.ps" when dragged to the printer print in the order of "C.ps", "B.ps", "A.ps". This will not do.
Second, the printer has a duplex unit installed and is set to use it, but the pages are not printing back-to-back, only one side per page.
I am at a loss as to how to make it do what I want (and what it used to do).
I doubt I am in need of special software, and I do not want to convert to PDF files.
Can anyone direct me to the answers (or better yet, just give me the answers)?
    Thank you.

Yes, I really need a PS file. Here's the procedure: I create a newsletter in Adobe InDesign. I print to a booklet using a printer designated for creating direct-to-plate. It automatically generates a postscript file. What happens is that the file is created properly and I always check it through Adobe Acrobat Professional to be sure there are no errors. There is either something in the InDesign procedure or in the Adobe Distiller that converts the halftone files incorrectly. The type comes out okay, but anything with grayscale imaging or with screens comes out in solid black or white, no "dots" if you will. I don't know if I am explaining myself properly, but I am a commercial printer and I use this procedure to create the plate I use to print the job on my press.
Does this make any sense to you?

  • InDesign CS5.5 Print Booklet Only Printing Even Pages

I'm having an issue with print booklet in Indesign CS5.5. I haven't used it before, so I'm not too familiar with it, but here's my problem:
I'm printing out the document (comprised of letter-size facing pages) as a PostScript file, then converting to PDF with Distiller. When I preview the document in the print booklet dialogue box, it looks good, and shows all the pages facing one another in the correct order. But when I print the PostScript file and use Distiller to convert it to a PDF, all I get in my final file are the even pages (the "left" pages).
I'm trying to print my file on tabloid paper so that my booklet ends up letter size. But the pages that print booklet is sending out are only letter sized. It's like somehow in the process, the odd pages are cut off and I only end up with letter-sized even pages.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong? How can I get the pages to end up on Tabloid size paper and not lose any pages?
Any help you might be able to offer would be highly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Landon
    System Info:
    Mac OSX 10.7, Lion
    Adobe InDesign CS5.5

Sounds like the file is not set to tabloid in the postscript so it's cropping off the right hand side. Printing to postscript for distiller is pretty complex on Mac these days. You need to use the AdobePDF ppd, not device independent, and I don't believe it's installed anywhere by default. • InDesign CS5 only prints one page at a time.

InDesign CS5 only prints one page at a time. No multiple copies. Each page in a document has to be printed one at a time. I didn't have this problem with any version before this. No matter what I do, change settings, etc. I still have the same outcome. How do I work around this problem so I can print a 5 copies of a 3 page document without having to do each copy of each page one at a time.

Sounds like a printer driver issue. Can you export to PDF and print that correctly?

  • InDesign CS5 freezes when exporting file as PDF

InDesign CS5 (7.0.4) run on iMac (OS 10.7.5).
I find that when exporting a document as PDF InDesign suddenly and randomly freezes at some point during the export process.
The only option is to force quit InDesign.
On relaunch InDesign has forgotten all the presets I had saved (eg Document Preset, Preflight Profile).
This happens fairly frequently but I cannot find a pattern to it or an obvious cause.
Thanks in advance or any help anyone can offer!!

  • Printing postscript file from IDcs3 for Distiller

I have just upgraded my mac to a MP 2.8 quad duo and hence to Leopard. I am running OS 10.5.2 and ID 5.02 so it is all up to date. I have cs3 design premium installed.
When running IDcs3 on OS 10.4 in order to create a pdf for 4 color print I would print a ps file from IDcs3. I select postscript file as the printer option and then in the PPD field choose Acrobat printer.
Now, having migrated to Leopard, the Acrobat option is no longer available in the PPD field. I have reinstalled Acrobat Professional to see if there was a problem with the printer profiles being installed, but that did not change anything.
I would have thought that selecting a PPD of "device independent" should work, but with that option selected I am unable to select the page size options.
How do I create postscript files from IDcs3 for Distiller?

WRT/ PDF/X-4, be aware that the final PDF/X-4 specification was published only one month ago by ISO. What is supported by Acrobat 8.x and InDesign 5.x does
not fully comply with that specification. The next major releases of Acrobat and the Creative Suite will provide full PDF/X-4 support.
Note that PDF/X-4 provides for full color-managed PDF 1.6 with support for live transparency, JPEG2000 image compression, and layers for (for versioning/editioning printing).
Although the current release of the Adobe PDF Print Engine is not an officially compliant reader of PDF/X-4 files, PDF/X-4 is the ideal PDF variant for same.
In terms of Distiller, there are no plans to provide support for PDF/X-4 in the Distiller simply because the Distiller doesn't support live transparency. Although one could conceivably ruin transparency by flattening and then validate the resultant PDF file as conforming to PDF/X-4 -- there is no requirement for live transparency -- use of flattened transparency in PDF/X-4 is certainly against the spirit of the standard we put together and by disallowing its production directly from Distiller or allowing InDesign's PDF export to flatten transparency going into PDF/X-4, we hope to dramatically improve the situation vis-a-vis rendering of transparency for printing by keeping transparency "live" and at its highest level of abstraction until RIP time.

  • CS5 Duplex Printing Alignment OFF

    Hello there,
I am running into a problem. Here is the situation:
I am using Adobe CS5 and am making booklets to print in which I have 4 pannels per physical page(legal). The top two are up-side-down so that when folded, the pages are proper. The printer being used has automatic duplexing, but the problem is, when it is used the back side of each page is 4mm lower than the front side. In addition to this, the upper two pannels on the physical page are 4mm closer to the top of the page than the bottom pannels are to the bottom of the page. However, on the computer, everything is centered. It is only when it is printed that the alignment is off.
I asked somebody about this and they said that there may be a setting in CS5 specifically for booklets as such that may help, but I haven't found anything yet. If you happen to know the answer, I would really appreciate the help.
    Thanks

Sorry, I don't know about your particular printer but the problems are pretty standard.  The trick is to go through your print settings very thoroughly as there are usually 2 places to set some items... one is to the printer driver and one is for generic print settings and sometimes they conflict or you must use one or the other to suit your needs.
From InDesign you hit 'print' then it will pop up an interface that will contain your printer's name at the top and a series of tabs, one of which will be 'setup' and in there you will find general positional settings and sheet size.  This is the best place to set them for me.  At the bottom of this tab is a 'printer' button which will access the specific settings for your printer.  There can be several levels here with repetition of items from the top menu.  If you don't see your specific printer listed then you may not have all the relevant drivers loaded.
I am not a printer expert, but in my experience the usual problem is understanding that these menus can be illogical and interact with each other so you may need to do some fiddling and experimentation.  Be fussy with sheet sizes, make sure your paper and ALL the settings match.
As for print to edge.... hmmmmm possibly same issue, but you might need oversize sheet depending on printer abilities.

  • Help with numbering lists in Indesign CS5.5 for epub file

I am working with a book in Indesign CS5.5 to export it as an epub file. I have been working on formatting the text and I have run into a small problem. Throughout the book there are multiple lists within the texts that need to be numbered. Each list, however, must start over at number 1 and not be continued on from the previous list. The lists are all unrelated and I need them to be completely separate. I used "Type", "Bullets and Numbering", then "Apply Numbering" to begin with. This had each list in the correct order. However, I also created a paragraph style with the correct font, size, indentation, and spacing that must be applied to all the lists before exporting. When I do this, everything keeps its correct formatting except that some of the lists continue their numbering from the previous list. For example, on page 1 I might have a list of four things all formatted correctly and number 1 through 4. On page 3, I have another list, of completely unrelated items. I therefore would like this list to be started over at number 1, but when I apply the paragraph style to it, it starts at 5, picking up where the last list left off. I need to keep these as the assigned paragraph style but it messes up the numbering. If anyone could help me figure out how to keep this from happening I would greatly appreciate it!

If you don't mind cracking open the ePub and editing template.css, then adding rules like:
    h2 {
              page-break-before: always;
should force each paragraph whose style is mapped to an h2 tag on to a new page. Whether or not it works will depend on how good the ePub reader is at implementing CSS. It seems to work for Digital Editions and also Kindle, if you convert ePub to Kindle format.
This doesn't help at all if you are trying to force sections into separate XHTML files, though.

  • InDesign CS5 hangs when opening files

I have recently begun experiencing a problem whereby I cannot open any existing InDesign documents. I can create new documents and work in them, but I cannot open any documents previously created in CS5.
InDesign CS5, MacBook Pro, Mountain Lion OS 10.8.2, Intel Corei7
The problem appeared shortly after the most recent Apple OS update so I suspect that may be causing this. InDesign just hangs with the beachball trying to open the file which it never does. It gets past linking files, then hangs. The problem has also occurred when I try to open files with InDesign CS6 on the same machine. I have tried to open a variety of different files and the problem still occurs so it doesn't seem to be file specific.
I encountered the problem a few days ago and somehow resolved it through a combination of trashing preferences, removing the SING folder and some font management. Today the problem returned and I can't seem to resolve it via any of those methods. All other Adobe CS5 and 6 apps work just fine.
I saw a post that recommended removing the SING plugin from InDesign's plug in folder so I tried that too. So far no luck.
I've attached the crash report and the Sample Process report from the Activity Monitor.

  • How to duplex print pdf file on hp 1320 using upd pcl5 on windows 7 ?

I am running Windows 7 Professional (64bit), with a HP laserjet 1320 using driver HP UPD PCL5 (v5.5.0.12834), with Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro v9.5.2 and MS Word 2010. When I print a Word 2010 file I can choose duplex printing (print on both sides) and everything works fine. However, when I open a PDF file, click FILE then PRINT then PROPERTIES the PRINT ON BOTH SIDES option shows "none" and no other option is shown. I searched Adobe support and it says duplex printing is controlled by the printer driver, not Adobe software. I have uninstalled & reinstalled the UPD PCL 5 driver two times already but still the same problem of not being able to choose duplex printing for any PDF document - yet it works for MS Word. Any ideas ? Thanks

How do I duplex print on an HP 1320 printer that uses windows 7 (64 bit) system?

  • Difference in printing PostScript file via Preview and lpr?

I have a PostScript file which prints entirely
different from Preview than it does when printed
via lpr, e.g., the fonts are different as well
    as the page rotation.
I'd like the lpr output to be the same as when
printed from Preview. Can I do that?
    Thanks in advance.

Most PostScript printers have a number of default settings within their printer menu, such as default font, orientation, finishing options, etc. When you submit a PS file via Terminal to the printer, the spool file will be printed according to these settings.
When you print from an application using a PS driver, these built-in settings will be over-ridden by those same values that are set in the driver. By opening the PS file in Preview, which will first be converted to a PDF so you can see it, and then printing this file, you have submitted this spool file with the default driver settings which are obviously different to those set in the printer.
So, if you want your LPR output to be the same, you will need to check what the printer driver settings are defaulted to and then make changes to the printers internal PS values.

    bump!
Bump after 6 minutes? Geeze! That's a bit excessive.
    You're running:
    Version:         7.0.0.355 (7000)
Upgrade to 7.0.4.553 and come back, reposting the crash report if you still have one.
There are a huge number of fixes in 7.0.3, and also some in 7.0.4, which you need.
Your crash is clearly related to preflight. If you get another crash with preflight turned off, please post that.

  • InDesign won't print all files in "Book" to PDF

I have 69 .indd files created in CS5 (ver7) that are part of a "book". I have been trying to "print" this book to PDF so I can submit a single PDF to the commercial printer. I do this all the time and have never had problems like this, but this is a new publication.
Here is what happens: I select all the files defined in the book, then click on the "Print the book" icon. After InDesign gathers all the document information, I select my Print Preset, with "Adobe PDF" as the printer, then print. After processing a few moments, I save the file, and InDesign/Acrobat starts processing the PDF. The complete book is 542 pages, but the PDF file pops up as completed with only about 38 pages processed; in the meantime, InDesign/Acrobat is still processing the files, but results in no new PDF file created.
I have rebooted and the problem has persisted.
In addition to this, another problem has cropped up and I wonder if it is somehow related. Parts of a master page (page heading) mysteriously appear on a page defined by another master page. There is no way to delete this unwanted heading, even if I "Override All Master Page Items".
    Any help is appreciated.

I would recommend exporting the book to PDF rather than printing to PDF....
Master objects from a different master might be appearing if they are on the other half of a master spread that is applied to the other half of the document spread and they touch that side of the master as well as being on the half not in use. Check the master in questina and be sure that the objec is not crossing the gutter.

  • InDesign CS5 - preventing "Read Only" files?

    Hi all,
We've always worked on a file server; and InDesign CS4 (and below) would lock any open files so only one person could access the document at a time. Now CS5 appears to let other other people view the INDDs as a read only file while others are working on it.
This allows people to open a live file, make changes and do a Save As. This is really bad for our workflow since we can't risk multiple people accessing a file at one time.
Is there anyway to disable this?
    Thanks.

    Thanks, Stix.
Updating the app fixed it. I tried searching for this answer on the forum first (as is protocol), but couldn't find the answer.
A co-worker found a similar thread/answer as well. I guess I need to fine tune my search skills.

  • Print postscript files from flash cs3 to get vector information

I've been playing around with some dynamic flash paintings
and would like to export the vector information. I've tried
choosing "print--save pdf--save pdf as postscript" I installed
Adobe's PS drivers. I set up a virtual printer on localhost using
AdobeDistiller. This is not working for me.
I witnessed flash exporting vector information this way on a
pc, but can't seem to get this working on a mac. The pc user
downloaded and installed postscript drivers from Adobe and used a
    similar method.
    I'm on Mac OS 10.4.11
Any ideas? This has been frustrating me for some time.
Thanks ahead of time for the help!

There are several ways to do this.
The easiest one, I think, is exporting a FLV file from the Render Queue, picking in the Outpit Module one of the "Same as source (Flash 8 and Higher)" FLV presets, modified manually just to enable the "Encode Alpha Channel" checkbox.
Because of a known limitation in the Flash authoring app, which can only handle embedded transparency information correctly when done in a certain way, it's strongly recommended after settting the FLV encoding options that you set the "Color" menu in the Output Module to "Straight (Unmatted)". Otherwise you may get ugly halos around certain elements.
