InDesign CS5 export to PDF created hyphens

I exported a pdf from InDesign CS5 that created hyphens in a paragraph where none had existed. What gives?
Thanks, Sidney

Ah, sorry for the exporting misunderstanding. I thought it was implied that since you can't export using a product, it's through ID. The NitroPDF is what it is exporting to and thus where I thought there could potentially be a driver disconnect within the workflow.
I'm confused. From ID you export to PDF (and get asked where to save the file). It sounds more like you are printing to PDF using Nitro PDF as a substitute for Distiller. Would you mind listing the commands you use to do that so I understand the workflow?
And I guess things have changed with reader... the X version gives you a limited amount of printing, according to the download site? Never heard of that before.... Who knew? I was always steered towards Acrobat Distiller if using any printing where an Adobe product was accessible.
What do you mean by a limited amount of printing? Distiller has no print function at all, nor any other fuction than to distill postscript into (flattened and primitive) PDF.

  • Indesign CS5 to Interactive PDF buggy?

I spent the last couple days, on and off, working with Indesign CS5 on OSX to create an interactive PDF.
Using Lynda.com as a resource, I set up some nice animations that were exporting well. I refined them and was prepared to finish up today. This morning, however, things stopped working.  My animations Preview well in Indesign, but after creating the SWF, and placing it -- or even using a SWF I created yesterday--the export is not working. The Export to Interactive PDF is not the most difficult part of the process and I couldn't have forgotten *everything* over night!   It was working fine yesterday.
Anyway, I tried rebooting. Creating a new, fresh Indesign document. Doing a fresh animation, using much simpler components.  Using different versions of Reader (I have 9, 10 and 8 loaded). Nothing works.  I'm not sure what the problem is but part of my animation gets clipped, and/or the Acrobat view is *always* wrong no matter what setting I choose.  The whole things is a mess and I'm abandoning the project which I had hoped to include as part of my proposal today.  Oh well, it's not a key element, but it would have been nice.
Anyone having similar problems or know why this might be happening???

I can tell you what they'll tell you in the Acrobat forum: PDF is considered a FINAL format. It's not intended (or constructed) to be work the way you would like.
allow the end user to be able to modify the text in each section so they can personalize it as necessary. Additionally, I want them to be able to add thier own logo to the newsletter.
The only thing that approaches what you want is creating form fields in InDesign that can be filled out when a user received the PDF document.
If each recipient had a full copy of PAID Acrobat application, they could make minor changes in text and pictures. To have the greatest capabilities, they would need to own the latest version, Acrobat XI, which has stronger editing features than earlier versions of Acrobat.

  • Indesign CS5 - Problems with PDF-Export

    Hello community,
we do have a problem with Indesign CS5 and exporting data into PDF. It is about that logo on that white surface, which doesnt come along with the rest after the pdf-export. What we did was: We created that white surface in Indesign itself, put an effect on it with the Indesign effect gallery and then imported the logo in the surface ... the logo itself is .psd data. So, if we export it into pdf like that, it is just dissapeared. Does anyone have had a similar problem and what can be done about it?
By the way ... if you put, for example, a simple backgroundshadow on a picture ... done also with the Indesign effect gallery, then you get just a white surface instead of the shadow, after the export into pdf. It does maybe correlate with the other problem ... not sure. Any suggestions?
Thank you very much for your help and kind regards ...

I would create the entire logo, including the white background, in Illustrator, save as PDF and place that in ID.

  • InDesign CS5 Crashes on PDF Export if Suitcase Fusion 3 Auto Activation is on

I just started having a problem after upgrading  from SF2 to 3 and using InDesign CS5. My exports to PDF were all  crashing as soon as the PDF creation background process started. I tried  all kinds of tests and troubleshooting to figure out what was causing  the problem as it was sudden and erratic.
Then I noticed that all the documents crashing were using fonts I  had activated with SF 3, so I created a new document with a simple  system font and it exported OK. Then a font installed activated  permanently via SF and still would crash.
I closed SF and reopen InDesign with a document using the SF  permanently activated fonts, still would crash. It wasn't until I turned  off SF3 Auto Activation in Preferences that the crashing ceased. I can  now have SF3 open, activate fonts and see them in InDesign and export  successfully without crash as long as that preference is unchecked.
This should be fixed in the next updated I hope as I like the auto activation feature.
Just posted as well on Extensis Forums:
    http://forums.extensis.com/jforum/posts/list/3533.page

I have also had a crash on export problem recently. I went through the suggestions in this thread and searched others.
Then I stepped through a few things in my INDD.
Deleted the suspect page. Export worked.
Brought the page back. Export crashed.
Looked at all the text on the page. I had 4 boxes with bulleted text.
I converted the bullets to text and the export went ahead with no problem.
I turned the bulleted list back into a real bulleted list and the export crashed again.
    Go figure.

  • InDesign CS5 exports PDFs where EPS elements have low resolution

I am rather new to InDesign CS5. I am currently working on a magazine, where I use graphics in TIFF and EPS. The exported PDF shows graphics in correct quality (300 dpi - TIFF) and graphics with poor resolution -> EPS. How is that even possible? The problem disappears when I use .AI, but it should work with EPS to, shouldn't it?
I figured that it might have something to do with the Transparency Flattener Presets, am I right? My presets are set to "low resolution" and it is not possible to set them to "hight resolution", as InDesign refuses to remember those settings.
    Please help!

Well, I was just trying to figure out why it's happening and thought that it might have something to do with the transparency flattening.
My colleagues, who also work with InDesign (althought with older versions), always use EPS and they never have problems. But your advice is not to use EPS format, am I right?

  • InDesign cannot export to pdf after corrupt file crash. Mac 10.6.8, CS5 7.0.4

Last Friday when opening an InDesign file that had become corrupt on the server, it crashed InDesign and since then hasn't been able to export to PDF. I've done a complete uninstall/reinstall of Creative Suite, ran Disk Utility on the MAC and still no luck. My next step is a complete wipe of the MAC and reinstall everything unless someone has another idea. Thanks, Ed

see Adobe Forums: InDesign crashes at startup for John's list of additional user files you can delete. If that doesn't work, try renaming the Adobe folders inthe bad account, then copy the ones from the admin account that works.

  • How to embed SWF in InDesign and export as PDF?

I am trying to do something that seems very simple, but I can't get it to work. I have a simple SWF animation that I have exported from Flash CS5, and I have placed it into my Indesign CS5 document. I checked these items in the Media panel:
    Play on Page Load
    Poster: From Current Frame
When I export the PDF, I select PDF/X-4 and choose Interactive Elements: Include Appearance. I get a still image of the animation in the PDF, but it doesn't play. Why?

Hi, I have the same issue??
Even when exporting as an interactive pdf.
My problem is that I am trying to figure out how to export my swf embedded file into an interactive pdf.
I have created an interactive presentation with buttons, effects etc. After which I exported to swf so that all the effects work.
But when placing the swf file back into indesign and exporting again as an interactive pdf it doesn't work at all, all I get is a white screen. (I need a pdf for clients basically, they dont want any swf or flash files.)
Even though after placing the swf file, in the media window I ticked play on page load as well as chose a cover image for the swf file. Still just a white screen when exporting.
To repeat, I need to know how to convert my swf file into an interactive pdf.
Any pointers please would be great I have some swf presentations I need to change into pdf as soon as possible or before tomorrow to be exact before our monthly meeting with clients.
    Please help

  • InDesign CS6 Export to PDF has missing objects

When exporting to PDF, I have a 6-page document that has missing objects from the master.
Here's the document with the content removed:
    lab.cyke.net/pdf/MissingObjects.pdf
The first and last pages were constructed correctly. All pages in between are screwed up. Any ideas?

@Jongware – I have a case with InDesign CS5.5 7.5.3 on Mac OS X 10.6.8 where master pages based on each other lead to false representation of page objects.
Not only in pdf export, but also on the actual InDesign pages. Made an IDML from it, opened that in InDesign CS4 and the error was gone.
This problem is documented at the German-Swiss forum "HilfDirSelbst" at:
    http://www.hilfdirselbst.ch/gforum/gforum.cgi?post=496285#496285
Some screen grabs together with the IDML are attached there.
After opening the IDML from InDesign CS4 with the error gone, I exported another IDML from CS4, opened that in InDesign CS5.5 7.5.3 and the error was present.
To detect the error look at pages 1* and 4 of the mentioned screen grabs.
    Uwe
//EDIT: *the screen grab of the pages palette of InDesign CS5.5 shows the error on page 4 only. The error is present outside of page 1 as well, but cannot show on the screen grab.

  • InDesign CS4 Export and PDF Printing Problem

Whenever we print PDFs created from InDesign CS4 documents that contain transparencies, drop shadows or gradients we've been having issues. White boxes will appear instead of the drop shadows and transparencies, and the colors of the gradient images will be completely different from what's in the original file. Of course, the PDF always looks perfect on the screen, and the .indd document prints correctly. The problems only occur when we print the PDFs.
We create the PDFs in InDesign using the File>Export function, and we've tried every version of PDF compatibility from 4 to 8. We're not exactly sure if this is an InDesign issue or an Acrobat issue, but we wanted to check and see if there's something specific we need to do doing during the exporting process to prevent this from happening.
Our IT department has been working on this but they're stumped, and the fine folks at Xerox insist that our printers are "fully operational."
We quickly looked through previous postings and didn't see another problem like this one listed, but we apologize if this has already been addressed and we are posting the same issue twice.
Any suggestions or insight anyone can offer is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks Bob! I followed the information the links you provided and it solved our problems! I won't bore you with the details of how long how many different people have been trying to solve this issue, but let's just say it's a lot.
You are being virtually hugged and/or high-fived by our entire Communications, IT and Printing Departments. THANK YOU!

  • Using Font Folio in InDesign to export in PDF to app store

Our customer is creating applications using In Design.    These applications are exported into PDF format for viewing on mobile devices.    Is there any additional licensing needed from Adobe in this scenario?
Also, in the future (not now) if the customer would like to look into perhaps fonts to be embedded in a app the customer is creating, what licensing would be needed?
    Thanks in advance!

For export of PDF from InDesign (or saving PDF from Illustrator or Photoshop), no additional license is required for embedding fonts sourced from Adobe (including all the fonts in the Font Folio and any bundled with Adobe applications).
This is not true for use in applications where text is being generated on-the-fly and/or can be entered by the user. Others will comment on those licensing requirements.

  • InDesign documents, exported to .pdfs then printed on PC and Mac laser printers - what are best settings?

Our in-house creative department produces a lot of materials that are no longer going to our commercial printer.
Projects are created in Adobe InDesign, exported as .pdfs and stored on a site, where marketing partners can then download the .pdfs and print.
Usually from laser printers, usually pcs.
I would appreciate any advice on choosing settings for the .pdf (export) to help manage color etc.
    thank you

If you are printing to laser printers by people that are not knowledgeable about color settings and device capabilities. I would not use Color Management. I would stick to something simple like Press Quality so that all the fonts used in your document will be embedded into the pdf so that you do not have to worry if the person printing the file has the fonts used in creating the documents.

  • Can (CS5) Export to PDF and Compress all Images ?

Using CS5, I have a "Book" with 12 chapters, and a total of about 800 color images. The goal is to export it as one PDF file that will be viewed on screens, not sent to a printer.
When I did export to PDF , the file size was enormous: about 240 MB.
I want this file to be much -- much! -- smaller sized (in terms of MB).
I have all the images at different resolutions -- from 72 dpi to 220 dpi --  and I do not need the higher resolutions.
What is the best way to approach this problem? ...
--Is there a way to set Indesign to compress all the images during the export ?
--Or can Photoshop be used to "batch" compress all the images to 72dpi ?
--Or is there some other method that I can't even imagine.
    Thanks very much !
    Zorba

Look in the Export to PDF Dialog. In the "Compression" panel, you can set a maximum allowed dpi -- any image with a value above the "above" value will be downsampled to the "to" value.
This only works on bitmap images; if you have placed large vector images, there is no way to automatically decrease their size.

  • InDesign doc exported to PDF won't print

I'm experiencing issues with an exported PDF from InDesign. More specifically, when I export the InDesign doc to a PDF and try to print, I don't have any issues, nor does anyone else in my office, however some of the people that I'm sending the document to are experiencing trouble printing it. They get to 44% flattened and then the printing process slows down, and then once it reaches 50% they get a pop-up window saying that the document can't print and the whole thing stops. They can print the first page by just selecting that page, however the second page cannot be printed this way. I have re-exported the PDF several times and these folks having the issues have cleared their browser cache, re-downloaded the document, saved it to their desktop before opening, and tried renaming the document as well.
What's going on here, and what can I do or tell them to do to fix this?
Also, updating their Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat does not solve the problem.

Hi, I was just wondering if you got the problem resolved. I'm asking because we are experiencing kind of the same issue in our office. Our Marketing Manager is using Adobe InDesign and exports her documents to PDF. These PDFs won't print in any of our printers in the office. It spools and then gets stuck and it actually makes our HP Coloured Laser Printer throw an error (error 79) and we'll have to restart the printer due to this error. We can print other documents and other PDFs in the printer so we know it's not a printer driver issue. In fact, we have isolated the problem to only PDFs exported from InDesign. Even if we create a blank document from InDesign and export it to PDF it still won't print. Really odd. We would appreciate if you could share your solution if you were able to fix the issue. Thanks!!

  • Linking URLs to InDesign CS5 exported .swf files

I primarily work in print design, but I've exported a few animated .swf files of web banner ads from InDesign CS5, and the folks on the receiving end can't use them because they're unable to link them to a URL (in whatever manner they're able to with other Flash files). I was hopeful that I could open the files in Flash and edit them there, but it seems not to be an editable file. It's been pretty frustrating watching work go down the drain and people have to settle for less glamorous static ads. Does anybody know a solution?

I think I may have responded to this in the community help section, but I'll repeat what I said there. InDesign has some impressive Flash capabilities but using it to create an entire website....no, not a good idea at all.
The size of the SWF files is a major issue and they are quite simply not suitable for this purpose. Additionally, an entire website in Flash is an SEO nightmare so it won't matter how long it takes to load since nobody is likely to find it.
Flash should be used judiciously on the web. In fact, I never use it. All that said, the only advice I can offer if you decide to ignore the rest of it, is to export to FLA, open it in Flash Professional and finish it up there.
