InDesign CS5 file won't open

At my work, we are working on formatting a book in InDesign. We are using the same base template for each file. I created a front matter document with a table of contents (TOC), list of figures (LOF), list of tables (LOT), acronyms, and glossary using that base template. Everything worked fine; I was able to generate the TOC, LOF, and LOT, and could work with the file with no problem. Then I saved and closed the file. Later that day, I was unable to open the file.
The message I get includes the statement, "You may not have permission or the file may be open already."
No one else had opened it and there are no lock files. The other person using InDesign also cannot open it. I made a copy of the file and saved it in another location and still could not open it.
The files are all on our network. We are using InDesign CS5 and Windows7 (64-bit). The only difference between this file and the others are the modifications that I made to some TOC paragraph styles so two paragraphs could be displayed side-by-side in the TOC (i.e., Chapter 1 Introduction all on one line, where Chapter 1 comes from one paragraph and Introduction comes from another by having no leading on one paragraph style).
Can anyone suggest a solution for this? This is rather urgent as the client needs the book by the end of next week.
Thank you so much for your help.
regards,
Marina Michaels

Yes:  The message I get says, "Cannot open (file path and name). You may not have permission or the file may be open already."
Thanks!

  • Indesign CS4 files won't open in CS6

    Installed CS6 on new MBP. Moved CS4 design files over to new computer.
    Files won't open in CS6. Get the following message:
    Cannot open "filename.indd". The file "filename.indd" is damaged (Error code: 4).
    This happens with ALL of my CS4 Indesign files. (*Note: they DO open on old MBP)
    I tried exporting one as IDML on old machine - same thing.
    Any suggestions? I was told all older version files will open in NEW CS versions. True?

  • InDesign CS5.5 won't open in OS X 10.10

    I just installed Yosemite and hadn't had any troubles with anything until I tried to open InDesign CS5.5. It keeps telling me, "To open “Adobe InDesign CS5.5.app” you need to install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime." I've searched for Java SE 6 and cannot find a way to download it. I downloaded Java 8, but the program is still not opening and I still get the warning dialog. I have work I need to get done and cannot work on till this is fixed. Any help is appreciated.

    Sorry, Derek, that's false. Thanks for your input though.

  • Indesign cs6 file won't open (spinning wheel)

    Hello,
    I have been working on a project using indesign, and this afternoon i tried to open it but I get nothing but the spinning wheel of death (Mac). I tried opening it on another Mac but it doesn't open there either. I read a few discussions, and tried a few but I can't even click on anything because of the spinning wheel. Does this mean my file cannot be recovered? Please help...

    Ello Peter,
    Thank you for your response. I looked at the script however, I was working on a newsletter/magazine with about 50 pages.  After I exported it, I noticed some minor editing needed to be done.  When I tried to open it back up, I was unable to.  I tried a few times and when I open ID, all i get is the spinning wheel. I quit ID a few times and a message asking to try to recover the file pops up. Ive pressed all options a few times and still no luck.

  • InDesign CS5.5 won't open and crashes on new mac

    Works fine on my laptop

    The "new one" is creative cloud, and it's been out for months....
    I think something is seriously wrong with your installation. I'd problably uninstall again, if you can find the uninstaller, and run the cleaner tool (CS Cleaner Tool for installation problems | CCM, CS6, CS5.5, CS5, CS4, CS3) to remove all traces. Then reboot and reinistall.

  • Acrobat and InDesign CS5 file issue

    Hi everyone...
    My issue is that Acrobat won't or can't convert InDesign CS5 files. It opens Illustrator and Photoshop and converts them to pdf's but not InDesign.
    I've tried everything. I've even tried Adobe tech help. No luck. It was a relatively easy procedure in CS4, not to mention a time saver.
    Is there someone that knows how to resolve this? Please help as I'm desperate to avoid having to convert all my InDesign files one at a time.

    Hi Matthew-
    Our workflow often involves combining multiple IND files into a pdf.  With CS4, we merely opened acrobat, clicked "Merge Files into a Single PDF" and dropped in the indesign files we wished to combine. Presto- we had one PDF with all IND files put together without having to go through indesign.
    In response to your post, I only have CS5 installed, and it seems as though Acrobat doesn't recognize ID CS5 as a program at all.   I believe I am current on all InDesign and Acrobat 9 updates to date - I'm running InDesign7.0.2 and Acrobat 9.3.4.
    When trying to open IND files through Acrobat, Acrobat launches and gives an error message that states: "Please select a file created by an application that resides on your computer."
    Acrobat can't call InDesign CS5 to open at all.  Could this be because Acrobat was not updated along with the CS5 suite and therefore doesn't recognize the new CS5 Indesign files?
    I read another blog that mentioned it could be a registry problem- they ran CCleaner and ran the registry fix.  Then uninstalled and reinstalled both Acrobat and Indesign.  What are your thoughts on this method?  It's hard for me to try this on my own, as it requires an administrative login- our IT department has us locked out.  I would like another opinion before I ask them to help.
    Do you forsee a fix from Adobe in the future?
    Thanks for your help!
    -Julie

    How do I upgrade the plugins needed for my earlier version of InDesign CS5 so I can open a file in a later version of CS5?

    You can’t. You have upgrade or have whoever is send you files save as IDML. Don’t expect perfection.

  • Restoring a "mini save" to OPEN InDesign cs5 file through InDesign Recivery

    using time machine, can I go back to a previously OPEN (not saved) indesign cs5 file to get to the "mini save" of the file? the file was open as time machine was running (overnight)
    A tech person didn't save the changes I made to the indesignfile before restarting my computer, so right now on the hard drive there is no recovery data I can use.
    Looking in the time machine back-ups, It looks like there is no "cache" in the "library" in any of the time machine saves. (so there is no "InDesign Recovery" file, right?) why not? isn't time machine making an exact copy of my hard drive?

    Hi hasvi,
    Need Template(.indt), textframes etc for the following script:
    var myFolderInd = Folder.selectDialog();
    var myFile = myFolderInd.getFiles("*indt");
    app.open(myFile)
    var myDoc = app.activeDocument;
    var myDocName = myDoc.name;
    var mySaveFile = app.activeDocument.save(myFolderInd.fsName + "/" + myDocName.split(".indt").join(".indd"));
    var myFolderDoc = Folder.selectDialog();
    var myFile1 = myFolderDoc.getFiles("*doc");
    mySaveFile.pages[0].textFrames[0].place(File(myFile1))
    //~ mySaveFile.place(File(myFile1))
    app.activeDocument.textPreferences.smartTextReflow = true;
    var myPDFFile = new File(mySaveFile.filePath + "/" + mySaveFile.name.split(".indd").join(".pdf"))
    myDoc.exportFile(ExportFormat.PDF_TYPE, File("~/Desktop/abc.pdf"));

  • Indesign CS5.5 won't start

    Hi,
    My Indesign CS5.5 won't start. Gets to 'Initialising' then 'Adobe Indesign has stopped working' I've tried reinstalling, then uninstalling all programs in the suite, then reinstalling, then uninstalling & reinstalling just Indesign, then using the Cleanup tool. Nothing worked. Any clues please?
    Thanks
    Grant

    Hi Eugene, Peter,
    Thanks for your tips. I had some trouble actually finding those files, but I eventually moved the caches to the desktop and that fixed the problem. All going well now, thankyou.
    BTW in the process a couple of other faults were fixed as well:
    'Open recent' wasn't working and occasionally no image was loading on the screen so thanks again!
    Regards

  • Canon CR2 Raw files won't open in Photoshop CS4

    I'm using a Canon EOS 600D (aka EOS Kiss X5), Photoshop CS4 (ver 11.0.1) with Camera Raw 5.7.0.213.
    CR2 Raw files won't open in Photoshop, though the thumbnails are clearly visible and open in Windows Explorer.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

    Yes, absolutely all of the quality and dynamic range is retained in the DNG, because it is still raw data.
    Outside of upgrading to Photoshop CS5, which can open your files directly with Camera Raw 6.4.1, your only choice is the extra step of converting the .CR2 files to .DNG with the free DNG converter.
    While you'll get all the quality your Camera Raw 5.x converter can deliver, you should keep in mind the Camera Raw 6.x converter has an entirely new, additional "2010 process" for converting raw images, which (depending on your settings) can actually deliver a higher quality conversion than the one you're getting with Photoshop CS4.  I think it's worth the cost of the Photoshop upgrade, personally.
