Indesign CS5 Lion startup crash continues ...

Whenever I try to open InDesign, it crashes on startup. I'm using CS5 with OS 10.7.2
Photoshop works fine, but InDesign crashes. ('InDesign quit unexpectedly' error message). I just posted about it at the end of this thread but as that thread has been marked 'answered' thought I'd better start a new one.
I've tried the fix of removing the /datastore and then the /Mark II folders from the SING folder. I even tried taking out the whole SING folder. No luck. (I've put them back again).
All my permissions are repaired and looking good.
This is a brand new problem, I can't understand why it's started happening now.
Here's my crash report: http://pastebin.com/yp8ZwRCe
Please help! I'm at the end of my tether and there's a deadline coming up sharpish.

Err, rga56:
Just because it is crashing doesn't mean it is the same problem. You should post yours seperately...Especially from 7.0.4.
I just downloaded a free trial upgrade for CS5.5 and it seems to run fine at first glance.
Hangon!
Updates within a version, like 7.0.0 to 7.0.4, are free. CS5 stays CS5.
But CS5.5 is not a free upgrade from CS5.
You can download a free trial of CS5.5 for 30 days, but after the 30 days, then you have to actually buy the software (and also, you won't be able to read your CS5.5 documents in CS5).
If you're OK with that, great. But if not, be warned!!

  • InDesign CS5.5 keeps crashing when I open a particular document

InDesign CS5.5 keeps crashing when I open a particular document. This suddenly started happening a few hours ago, and other files are unaffected. I downloaded a backup from last week and that was fine, but I need to get this latest version working again. I've cleared out the Recovery folder, deleted Preferences, and even reinstalled InDesign - all to no avail.
    I'm running Windows 8.
    Any help gratefully received!

Even after emptying the recovery folder?
It's either a damaged install or a bad font or some other conflict. Do the font trouble-shooter first, then move to checking for a conflict.
To check for a conflict, go to the start button and in the Search field Type msconfig to bring up the configuration utility. Open it, go to the Services tab and click the box to Hide All Microsoft Services. You can uncheck just about anything that's left (for diagnostic purposes) except FLEXnet Licensing Services and a service starting with ##ID_String... which are part of the Adobe licensing sytem and need to be active for Adobe product to run.
Now switch to the Startup tab, and uncheck everything except your mouse driver and the Adobe Service Manager for this version.
Reboot. Ignore the warning about startup in diagnostic mode for the moment and Launch ID and see if it works. If it does, go back msconfig and add back startup programs in groups, rebooting each time and repeat the test until you get a failure. If all the startup programs work, repeat with the services tab. If nothing causes a problem I have no idea what's going on.
On the other hand, if ID fails again straight off with all that stuff disabled, the installtion is corrupt. Run the cleaner tool (CS Cleaner Tool for installation problems | CCM, CS6, CS5.5, CS5, CS4, CS3) and reinstall while still in diagnostic mode, then run msconfig one last time to restore normal startup.

  • Indesign CS5 Lion Start-up Crash

I just got a new MacBook Air with OSX Lion preinstalled, and have transferred files over from a snow leopard mac using migration assistant. After that, Indesign CS5 will not start on the air. I have tried updating the software several times, and nothing seems to work. Photoshop works fine, as does indesign on my other computer, but it crashes on startup, after the splash screen mentions something about installing plugins which never work. What should I do?

I've migrated from a Snow Leopard using the migration tool to a new Lion preinstalled machine. And I have the same problem. Both my CS5 and CS5.5 crashes on startup. Other Adobe CS-product work fine as far as I've testes - positivly photoshop and illustrator.
It crashes at the same time weather I open the program through a file or open the application directly from my HD (see screenshot)
My startup status-line init with "Initialising .."
    Then "Loading the application .."
    Then "Registering 233 plugins .."
Then "Saving object model .." (a fraction of a second)
Then the status line "Initializing plug-ins .."
and it crashes shortly theirafter (2 sec after) on my specific machine.
My CS5 crashes same way and same exact point in the startup procedure.
My hardware is 2.3ghz core i7 macBookPro with 8Gb 1333 Mhz DDR3 ram and a primary solid state HD with room the spare.
    Any help is appreciated

  • InDesign CS5.5 Keeps Crashing on Startup

Anyone having trouble with InDesign CS5.5 crashing on startup after installing OS Lion....
    please do the following:
    1. Run Uninstall on InDesign CS5.5
    2. go to your User/Library/Preferences and delete the folder called "Adobe InDesign" this will be invisible after loading Lion.
so you'll have to show invisibles by going to your terminal window and typing
    open terminal and type:
    defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
and now relaunch finder by typing
    killall Finder
    done.
    3. Re-install InDesign CS5.5 and it will work.

Just for anyone reading, while the terminal change will show the Library folder, it's not necessary unless you want all invisible files permanently shown. Hold down the Option key and choose the Go menu in Finder. The user Library file will be shown and can be selected, without needing to make any changes via Terminal.
    Regards.

  • Indesign CS5.5 / CS6 crash under Mountain Lion DP4

    Hi all
I've a "developer mac" at my office, where we're testing Mountain Lion. On this computer we also have two Adobe installations (CS5.5 and CS6). Until the last OS update, all Adobe applications seem to run without any problem worthy of note.
After upgrading to Mountain Lion DP4, both versions of Indesign have started to have a very annoying problem.
Package creation and deletion of a page crash the program.
It seems the crash is caused by the warning dialog that Indesign would be opened before any of the operations described above (the classic window with the warning sign).
This is the crash log (only the interesting part):

    Try the Apple Developer forums.
    Bob
I think Apple has deprecated some OS functions that ID still want to use.
IMHO many of similar problems will disappear definitively when InDesign will be rewritten completely in Cocoa...
It seems that InDesign is the only application that has not implemented the changes made on Photoshop and Illustrator, like a more modern UI and 64bit code...
However I'll try to ask this in the ADC forum.

I just purchased a new MacPro, Its running 10.7.2. And I just installed my Design Premium. All ther suite programs launch fine, except InDesign. Ive only opened one file, and I just tried to launch it and it closes almost immediately. Here is the crash report,

  • InDesign CS5 for Mac crashes on opening file. Have replaced References and all other suggestions.

I am having a problem with InDesign CS5 crashing when I try to open a file that formerly opened just fine. Even restored versions from Time Machine or that I had a backup saved on an external hard drive will not open. I recently had to reconstruct a 90 page magazine for the same reason. I heard that Extensis Suitcase might be causing the problem so I disabled the plug-in, but still can't get the file open. The file in question is full of tables and would be a nightmare to redo. I am running Snow Leopard. It will open briefly and tell me that fonts are missing, then crash.

I have already disabled the Extensis plug-in and am activating the fonts
manually from within Extensis. It's the very latest version, Suitcase
Fusion 3, and it warps my chops that it doesn't play nice with InDesign.
I got rid of the Mindsteam grammar plug-in also and sent a tersely
worded letter to the vendor. When you pay nearly $200 for a plug-in, you
expect it to work. I don't have time for this aggravation! I truly
appreciate the help I've gotten here. This has certainly discouraged me
from using any third-party plug-ins. I was ready to go back to Quark
Xpress. For the moment, everything is behaving.

  • Unchecking "Shared Hyperlink Destination" causes InDesign CS5.5 to crash

This occurs on multiple Macs (running either Leopard or Snow Leopard) in our office. The links are connected to conditional text in InCopy. Here's the scenario:
    1) Open the InDesign document and select the linked text.
    2) Get a dialog box: "You must check out the contents of this frame in order to make changes. Check out now?" Click "Yes."
    3) Copy the text of the link, right-click and select "New Hyperlink."
    4) In the "New Hyperlink" window, paste in the text of the URL (leaving in the http://).
    5) Uncheck "Shared Hyperlink Destination." InDesign immediately crashes.
I've been told by our designers that you have to uncheck "Shared Hyperlink Destination" to prevent changes to all of the other related links in the document. I don't work with InDesign on a regular basis and have very limited knowledge of InCopy. I tested the current version of InDesign (7.5.3) on my Mac and the same crash occurred.

Thanks to you both. Excuse my ignorance - I presumed that 7.5.3 was a paid-for-upgrade to Creative Suite 6 (or higher?!)... I thought I had the Updater set to prompt me for updates, but I obviously didn't.
Anyhow - I've since run the updater, but the crash happens the same way. Here's the new crash report.

Hopefully there's something of use in this - I really don't want to have to manually do this: I have nearly 200 film titles that need to be listed in alphabetical order with their respective page number, and the TOC feature would be the perfect solution if it actually worked...
As a matter of interest, how stable is Creative Suite 6 / Creative Cloud? Worth the leap?

Using Universal Type Server 3 client for fonts. I tried doing a synchronize and reset, and reactivating all of the fonts, but this did not help.

Is Universal Type Server updated to the latest version? Is InDesign the only program you're facing issues with? Are you working with the document that is located in a network location? Try saving the file locally to your computer and see if you can replicate the crash. Clean the InDesign cache location by dragging the en_US folder from the following location: Macintosh HD/Users/Username/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/version 7.0 or version 8.0/ for both CS5 and CS6. If you can't see the Library, then use the Go menu of the Finder holding down the Alt key on the keyboard to make the Library visible inside the Go menu and navigate to it that way.
Once you've cleaned the cache, re-launch InDesign and open your document to edit. Do not activate all fonts using the UTS, just activate the fonts that you used in your document to test for crash. If ID still crashes, then replace fonts by local fonts and test for crash.
Change the Display performance settings from Preferences to Fast for both Options panel and Adjust view settings panel and test for crash.

  • Pasting text into indesign CS5 causes constant crashing

We have a problem with one of our computers and indesign CS5. When they paste text from any other program into indesign it crashes. It may be OK for 10 minutes or so but then crashes. This is a big job with lots of business cards and they need to copy and paste text from excel and then into indesign. She gets through 4 or 5 and then it crashes. We have deleted preferences a few times and tried pasting into text edit first but it always ends up crashing indesign. It happens when text is pasted from a pdf or word also.
    Any ideas?
    TR

Not a very timely reply but, I was being vexed as well with copying from one InDesign document to another.  The original and the destination were both two color newsletters.  I would copy an entire page and switch to the destination document to paste it.  Unfortunately, once the Command-C was initiated, the swirling ball of death eventually resulted in a crash.  After three attempts and restarting my computer, I tried it again but, same result.
Then, I copied only one element at a time (graphic, then a text box, grouped text and graphic...etc.)  Not until I came to a single Placed EPS graphic (Illustrator EPS) did it initiate the death spiral. (I'd previously deleted all unused colors just in case)
I opened the offending file and noticed that a radial gradient contained a spot color and a CMYK mix (instead of a percentage of the same spot color).  That was all it appeared to be... so far.  A bit odd that THAT would hang such a powerful suite of software.
I plan to try a full page copy/paste to see if that was indeed the problem.
Computer Info: 2009 MAC Tower, 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 8GB RAM, OS 10.6.8, CS6. (and I was completely sober)
PS: I tried the full page copy/paste and, it worked without a hiccup.

  • InDesign CS5 file is crashing during Package - Carbonite the reason?

I recently downloaded Carbonite to try it. Now I can't seem to package my InDesign CS5 files. I am on a PC. I get the Document Font and Link Files, but my actual .indd file never completes the Package process.  I  need to use the Windows Task Manager to close InDesign.  Then when I re-open it I get the error message that it is trying to recover my file. Then InDesign hoses up again.  I turned off Carbonite, but I can't get InDesign to stop looking or trying to recover the file.  Any suggestions?  I have a customer waiting....... (PS -  I am scrubbing Carbonite)

I've been running Carbonite for 6 months with no problems.
I think you need to look elsewhere for the problem.

  • Indesign 5.5 startup crash OSX Lion

I am running a week old 2.4 GHz Macbook Pro (4gb) running Lion 10.7.2, transferred CS5.5 over to the new computer using Migration assistant from a late 2007 macbook.  Indesign worked fine on old computer. On the new computer, all Adobe CS5.5 programs are working except Indesign.
I've looked through many of the forums trying to figure out a way to fix my problem. I couldn't find the SING folder, so I don't think it's that.
I tried to run the activity monitor, but I coudn't even get Indesign to open so I couldn't get a sample.
Here is my crash report from what I sent to Adobe.
    Any help is great, Thanks!

This seldom really works. Reinstall ID, then update to 7.5.2 and try again.

  • InDesign CS5.5 always crashes on initial startup

I have ID CS5.5 on my windows 7 machine, and for some strange reason it ALWAYS crashes the first time I start the software. After the initial crash, I can open any documents normally, so admittedly it doesn't impact productivity that much. I was just wondering if anybody else has had this problem, and has found a solution for it.

What is your operating system? Is ID patched to 7.5.2?
If you have a crash report, see Guide to Interpreting InDesign Crash Reports | InDesignSecrets or post it on Pastebin.com and put a link here.

  • Indesign cs5.5 keeps crashing when i place an image

    I used a trial
version of indesign and this was a constant issue....crashing when placing images, i thought it was because i was running a trial version.
I went out and bought a copy and registered it and to my horror the crashing is just as bad, it only seems to happen when i place an image, working in text is fine no crashing. I'm operating on windows vista with HP pavillion dv9000 3 gig ram 300gig HD
is there a patch that can be used ? i would really appreciate some assistance, i'm a bit of a noobie to indesign so please make it noobie proof.

At this point it's pretty hard to tell if the problem is the images or ID, but I suspect it's a bad install.
I would run add/remove programs and uninstall ID, then run the clean script: Resolve installation problems with CS5 Cleaner Tool to remove any leftover traces.
Run MSconfig and turn off unnecessary startup programs and services, especially antivirus and spyware scanners, firewalls, messenger programs, iTunes, and browser helpers and toolbars, then reboot in the modified startup condition. Be sure you are logged in as an administrator and reinistall. Run MS config to restore to normal startup and reboot.
Launch ID, then go to Help > Updates... to get the patch.
