InDesign CS5 panels and toolbars not working

Was curious if anyone else has had this problem. I can't seem to get my tools to show up on the left side when I open InDesign and try to get them to pop up. Also, when I try to set up panels such as Swatches, Character, etc. on my screen... I go to Window, select them, they show up on my screen but under a different name. For example, I'll click to have Character pop up, and that will show, but with the title of Paragraph. Then, if I try to view another panel, it might replace one I currently have showing with the new one. This is driving me nuts! I don't know if I should try and reinstall CS5... It also continously won't let me save, and shuts down unexpectedly. And advice would be greatly appreciated!

I'm currently running 10.5.8 and it's on a Macbook Pro. I loaded the suite on my iMac that is running 10.6.8 and that one is not having any problems. Do you think that might be the problem, that I need to update the Macbook's operating system? I have not tried the replacing preferences either, I will try that and see if it makes a difference. InDesign CS5.5 Style sheets not working properly

Hello,
I'm checking out a trial version of InDesign CS5.5 and am creating some paragraph style sheets that don't seem to be working. When assigning the latest style I've created to a paragraph, it changes the color I've spec'd, but not the typeface. I open up the style to make sure I've selected the typeface, and it's in order. It just won't style the paragraph with it. What might be going on?

to force a paragraph style with all defined attributes to a paragraph regardless of local formatting and applied character styles, hold the "alt" + "shift" keys when applying the paragraph style.
If you want to preserve character styles and overwrite local formatting, then hold the "alt" key when applying the paragraph style.

Control panel and Console not working

Hi,
I have installed various Java Runtime Environments, all of which run applets flawlessly. There is one problem though, I need to enter an application that needs a certificate for security, and the dialog opens as a blank screen. I'm not positive, but it is similar to when I open the control panel and the console; a blank screen. Is there a way to fix the control panel and console so it doesn't show up as a blank screen, short of reinstalling the OS? I am thinking if I fix the control panel, it might fix the security dialog.
System: XP SP1

I have noticed that when i maximize a window that is blank ( i.e. the console or java web start) the screen refreshes and the window is displayed.

Indesign CC - OptionDrag and ShiftDrag not working

In another thread, it says firefox can be the issue; but I don't even have firefox installed. Anyone know why these command are not working? They work in Illustrator CC.

Since you've shown us the folder contents it's a good bet it isn't in use (no lock file). And it doesn't look like the file is mis-named as there doesn't seem to be anything else there that would be the .indd file (but just in case, open it in TextEdit and paste the first few lines here so we can see what the file header says), so the most likely case is the file is damaged. Is that on a removable device of some sort?
You can try the tool at Repair corrupt InDesign Adobe files on Mac OS X or send me a link to the file by private message and I'll try the recovery tool I have for Windows.

I have CS5 and a d-600. I would like to use camera raw but not working. I downloaded CR 7.3 and still not working. Do I need to upgrade to CS6 ..or just throw it all out the window and get rid of my d-600 ?

Adobe InDesign CS5.5 and CS6 keep crashing

InDesign CS5.5 and CS6 keeps crashing while working on the documents. It's hard to identify the patteren when it's crashes. I deleted the SING/DataStore. Used FontNuke to clear all font caches but none of those helps. CS 5.5 and CS6 are installed on different macs but both crash.

I'm not an expert in reading crash reports, though I do recognze a few of the more common ones (which this is not). You read them from the top down, so the fisrt line in the crashed thread is the last thing it was doing before the crash. In the case of the CS6 crash you posted, the fisrts 8 lines of thread 0 are Apple code calls, and the last thing that was happening in ID had to do withteh Object Widget Library (I think that's what OWL stands for).

Adobe Bridge CS5 in windows 7 not working?

Adobe Bridge CS5 in windows 7 not working. I was using bridge perfectly for last 2 years. It stops working since 3 days. I tried to install updates. Showing some error to install.
Tried to install creative cloud..again some error. Error code : 82
Could you please advice how I can fix my adobe bridge.

Changing the size of fonts in InDesign's menus and toolbars?

Is it possible to change the size of fonts in InDesign's menus and toolbars? I'd love for the Control Panel at the top to be a bit easier to read.

Thanks Bob, didn't see it anywhere but figured it was worth asking. I think the size is a little biased toward people with better vision than me but I guess I'll have to live with that.

Usb composite device is an older usb device and might not work in USB 3

I recently bought one Lenovo Yoga 2 11 laptop running Windows 8.1 (64 bit).
When I try to connect my old Brother MFC-3240C printer using USB (2.0), it doesn’t work.
Below are the steps performed:
Connected the printer to USB 2.0 port on laptop (on the right side). Automatically installed the printer driver (no exclamation mark beside printer icon)
When the printer didn’t print, I tried to use troubleshoot as below:
Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->Devices and Printers->Right Click on Printer Icon->Troubleshoot.
It came up with USB composite device is an older usb device and might not work in USB 3.0
Removed the printer and re-installed the driver. It is all the same.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
FYI – the same printer works fine with my older laptops running Windows 7.

Already checked Brothers website for the printer drivre for Windows 8.1 (64 bit).
It says ... The built-in driver is already included with Windows® Operating System or is available through Windows® update.
So, installed the default driver for the printer that is available with Windows 8.1.
Even connected the printer with USB 3.0 port on the laptop, but it is all the same.

Why does my google toolbar not work properly with the new updates. It was such a convenience to use the old toolbar to go to places I had visited before. Now I cannot get those old addresses with anything but Firefox 3.62 or whatever.

Google have stopped supporting Google Toolbar on the latest versions of Firefox. Apparently one of the reasons for this decision is that modern browsers already tend to support many of the functions that google toolbar provides.
Firefox does allow you to specifically bookmark sites you have chosen, and also automatically remembers many of the sites you visit.

2 of 4 speakers and Subwoofer not working for Altec Lansing Lucasfilms THX Surround (circa 2003)

I am attempting to connect my Altec Lansing Lucasfilm THX 5.1 sound system to my HP ENVY All-in-one. I think the original audio card for the sound system came on a Dell with Soundblaster.
I have connected the green audio to the jack in the back which only gets 2 of the 4 speakers working (even after configuring the speakers). The subwoofer is connected to the sub jack in the back panel as well and is not working at all. I realize that I am trying to have an ancient sound system work with my fancy new HP Envy. Am I asking too much?? I thought maybe a driver update might be needed. But in theory, if those jacks are available in the back it should work (she says optimistically).
Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

It sounds like you have the speakers connected correctly. If there is only one connector for all of the speakers, it may be that you will only be able to use two of them. However, I am not certain why the subwoofer isn't working. Is it selected in the Control Panel / Sound? I realize that you said the speakers are configured in the Control Panel, but is the subwoofer separate?
I have an old (2001) Polk Audio set of speakers. I have only been able to get two of them and the subwoofer to work with my new HP computer. It sounds fine without the other two speakers.
