InDesign CS5 Ridiculously Slow
Hey everyone, I know this issue has been reported multiple times, but I'm bumping it by giving it a new thread. At work we just installed CS5, and InDesign is still horribly slow - almost to the point that it is humorous (not really). Anyhow, I've turned off/disabled the live redraw, disabled spell check, live preflighting, and pretty much EVERYTHING I could think of that might slow it down. CS3 runs smooth as silk, even when editing the same document. Has anyone found a fix? Does anyone know if there will be a fix from Adobe?
I understand you have to have a decently fast system, and ours are brand-new iMacs. They are 2.8Ghz Quad-Cores, with 4GB of RAM, and the best video card. That should be more than enough power. And, having the same document run fine on CS3 makes me really think it's just a CS5 issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...it's not fun having some expensive software on my computer that I can't even use. I've tried everything!
Hi, Windytech! We had a similar problem with our CS5 install. We did two specific things that immediately sped up INDD. Hopefully one or both of these will help you out.
First, in the PREFERENCES panel, go to INTERFACE and set Live Screen Drawing to DELAYED.
While still in the PREFERENCES panel, go to DISPLAY PERFORMANCE and set Default View to TYPICAL or FAST.
Second, go to WINDOW > OUTPUT > PREFLIGHT to open the PREFLIGHT panel. Click the triangle in the top right corner of the panel and uncheck ENABLE PREFLIGHT FOR ALL DOCUMENTS.
These sped up InDesign considerably.

InDesign CS5 lag slow on Snow Leopard 10.6
I am reaching the end of patience with this one and starting to wish i'd not paid for a CS5 upgrade.
I installed under Mac OS 10.5 originally, did all updates and had font and other deathly slow issues in Photoshop.
In the end, I enacted a TOTAL system maintenance routine and upgraded to System 10.6 in order to try and get round probs with CS5.
I since have ditched all prefs, reset all caches, cleared all logs, done total font checks and removed a couple of corrupt ones, repaired disk permissions etc etc etc.... Photoshop 'appears' to work ok, although saving and saving to web can be sluggish (pizza wheel waiting for it....)
InDesign CS5 is now taxing my productivity. I thought it was my Wacom Intuous 3 tablet, but find the issue (at the mo as I've not noticed anything significant yet in Illustrator or Photoshop) only occurs with InDesign CS5.
The issue is the glitchy interface - stepped or delayed movements of objects across the page, selecting menu dialogue boxes can take a second when i click on a value, slightly steppy movements make selecting the tiny up and down arrows on some menus very tricky to be accurate. PLUS saving and saving PDFs in particular as well as PLACE images CMD-D can be deathly slow. It used to be almost instaneous, slowed only by the hard drive firing up. Now i try to do things and have to wait on many actions. It's doing my head in! This is NOT PRODUCTIVE.
In InDesign i have tried turning off Live Redraw, dropping display quality to fast (makes working almost impossible as i need to see what i'm doing), and disabled the Preflight option that is on by default, and i'm sure other options too i've seen on forums. But no better.
I have a Quad Core 3Ghz Intel Mac with 14Gb RAM, and an NIVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT graphics card.
IS this APPLE or ADOBE issue? How on earth can i get my speedy productivity back so i can move around the screen smoothly, save and place quickly, and select menu dialogues without waiting for it to react..... HELP!markmld wrote:
thanks for the heads-up Peter. Id not have thought to deactivate Adobe stuff first.
I've ordered a new WD Caviar Black (larger cache than i have on current drive) so a slight upgrade of drive, and as you say, a preserved backup. I dont have any spare bays in my Mac as i've filled them with other drives used for backups and other stuff, so i may need to buy an external case for the SATA i'm taking out. No matter, it will be sorted this weekend.
thanks all for help. fingers crossed this rather drastic step works!
Glad I thought of it. However, if you're keeping the drive, and don't have other installations, you can keep the backup drive installations active if you'll have a use for them if you boot from that drive. With your slow performance issues, you'll probably not want to use InDesign on that drive, but perhaps you'd want to use some other rarely-used apps from that drive. Yes, space, the final frontier.
OWC has USB drive adapters that work with many types of drives, including SATA, for about $30. They're open gizmos - no enclosure, no power supply, no fan, etc. They also have notebook-sized (2.5") drives up to 1TB with USB portable enclosures under $200, less for smaller.
Consider an extra empty drive for use with Time Machine, as an ongoing automatic backup. It's very comforting. An alternative or supplement is yet another drive that you use with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper, inexpensive shareware, that make complete and/or incremental backups, on demand or on schedule. I use Time Machine to back up a Time Capsule drive - wired or wirelessly - and CarbonCopy Cloner to back up to a portable USB drive that's Velcro'd onto the top case of my MacBook Pro.
Oh, and for suspenders to go with my two belts, or maybe that's a belt to go with my two suspenders, I also use Carbonite online backup - wirelessly or wired, about $5/month for unlimited storage. Their gotcha is that data is kept while it's on your drive, and then they delete it from your storage 30 days after you delete it from your drive. I had tried other online storage - Mozy, and some others, but at that time, about a year ago, they didn't work reliably. Probably better now. Not sure if they keep data after you delete it from your drive, or for how long after you delete it. I think also that some online storers define "unlimited" differently.
HTH

InDesign CS5 suddenly slower...
In Design CS5 has been running intermittently very slow recently. It will run normally for a while; then in the middle of a simple operation like copying a small piece of text, everything stalls and I get the pinwheel of death for an undetermined amount of time. Never long enought for me to bother force quitting, but happens frequently enough that it's really hindeirng my ability to get work done.
Have done some heavy work on old, imported files from CS3 and CS4 files lately. Also have recently installed trial versions of Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Production Premium CS5.5, but "completely" uninstalled those using the correct utilites and re-installed CS5 Design Premium afterwards. There have been some Apple Snow Leopard updates recently too. The kind of behavior I see on my activity monitor makes me think it's looking for something on a network somewhere. Either it takes a while and succeeds or it gives up and eventually moves on to the next thing. No other software being effected noticealbly except Illustrator CS5, but I use it less, so hard to name symptoms. All the CS5 apps used to run lickety split fast on this machine and just cleaned out a bunch of fonts. Things were better for a while, but now slower than before.
I've looked all over and noone else seems to be having this problem. Thoughts anyone?

Is it me or does InDesign CS5 seem slower and fuzzier, even in high-resolution preview, than InDesign CS4? I'm currently running CS5 on a 2009 Mac Pro 2.8 Quad with 6MBs of RAM and a Radeon 2600XT (256MB) graphics card. The file I'm working with is about 30 MBs in size.
Are these system specs adequate or do I need to upgrade my Mac Pro for CS5?Thanks Bob
I thought myself that there was a lot going on. And I appreciate that. But thinking about it, the only addition here is the spanning of columns and balanced columns.
I was at one stage incorpartaing detect edges on an image and had to give up on it because there was a 3 minute delay on simple things like cutting the image (as a test).
I just feel that perhaps more could be done in speeding up InDesign.
I've had a hard enough time updating the software, upgrading the hardware is going to be tough.
I don't think Indesign CS5 minimum specs included a supercomputer either?

Hello
I'm currently being affected by a slow scrolling bug in InDesign CS5 where no matter what my scroll settings are the speed is constantly slow. Is there an override in InDesign somewhere to fix this?
This was also present in CS4 but not quite as bad and have also seen other posts in Ps forums.
Using Windows 7 and logitech mouse
Thanks
NathanielCould you be more specific about this slow scrolling, and what settings are not making a difference?

Why is Indesign CS5.5 Sooooo Slow When it Goes to Deeeper of the Document
Hi all,
I've got a question recently in using Indesign CS5.5 on a MacbookPro with i7 processor, 8GB RAM and MacOS LION 10.7.2. The interaction turns to be extremely slow when I go deeper of the document. The response is quick at the beginning of the document, but when I turn to 15 pages or later, it takes several seconds to change font and adjust the text frame. I have almost tried all the solutions including readjust the virtual memory or shut down other applications while editing my Indesign file, but it just keeps performing this way.
Is there anyone who has the same problem with me? I hope I can get some useful suggestions from you guys. Thanks! The blog post below lists several reasons why InDesign can be slow:

I have a new PC/Win7 and a new CS5 Design Premium Suite. InDesign is extremely slow and crashes.

Unable to debug indesign cs5 plugin in windows
Hi, again. Originaly posted here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/766469?tstart=0
We are having some problems with an indesign sc5 plugin, it works perfectly in macosx but in windows it causes indesign to crash. Anyway after some trouble shooting we tried running it in debug indesign. Problem is that the debug version of indesign wont even start, it fezzes in the splash screen on "Registering xxx plug-ins". It hangs before we can write anything in log files and thatching a debugger gives nothing. Closer inspections
revealed that all the indesign treads is in "waiting" state. Waiting for what? Don't know. Killing one of the threads allows indesign to start but it will not have loaded the plugin and we are back on square one unable to debug.
Anyway I installed the osx version of debug indesign and starting it gives an assert like:
No translation of key 'com.adobe.rc.operationalmessages' to British string.
BreakStrToDebugger
ASSERT_FUNC
Examining the stack of the indesign main thread in windows gives pretty much the same thing:
0, ntkrnlpa.exe!KiDeliverApc+0xb3
1, ntkrnlpa.exe!ZwYieldExecution+0x19ae
2, ntkrnlpa.exe!NtWaitForSingleObject+0x9a
3, ntkrnlpa.exe!KeReleaseInStackQueuedSpinLockFromDpcLevel+0xb14
4, ntdll.dll!KiFastSystemCallRet
5, kernel32.dll!WaitForSingleObject+0x12
6, PMRuntime.dll!ClientShowAssert+0x8d
7, PMRuntime.dll!BreakStrToDebugger+0x15
8, PMRuntime.dll!ASSERT_FUNC+0x117
9, NETAPI32.dll+0xbe86972
(as reported by the ProcessHacker process viewer)
So the win version is trying to show an assert window but fails, locking indesign in the splash screen? Stoping indesign before any plugin execution?
As we cant get any debug information out we don really know what the problem is, making it rather hard to debug. We have triple checked the build and linking options. Studied the plugin exports. Inserted an ridiculous amount of trace statements in the code, doesn't work in the debug version but anyway.
Have anyone had a problem like this or know what might cause it?
What happens in the indesign startup process, what does the “Registering plug-ins” actually do? It's not executing any plugin functions and the the initialization of the plugins doesn't happen until later. You are correct in that none pf the plug-in code is executed during the "Registering ### plug-ins" phase. What is done here is simply loading the plugins by reading from their resource definitions. For example, if you try to load a CS4 plug-in in InDesign CS5 or if you try to load a release plug-in in debug version you will get errors and popups here and your plugin will not load and be available (these are just example errors and may not be relevant to your case). As far as I know InDesign should not crash just because there is a problem with your plugin, but there could be bugs.
I would recommend:
1. Remove your plugins and verify that InDesign debug starts properly without any 3rd party extensions.
2. Compile one of the SDK sample plugins (debug target) and make sure that InDesign still starts properly.
3. Create a new project using DollyXs, compile it and make sure it loads in InDesign.
4. Remove the template files and add your own source files except the basic .fr file and make sure it still loads in InDesign.
5. Keep changing things one at a time in your .fr file and verify it still loads until it looks exactly like your original .fr file.
Good luck.
Note: "No translation of key 'XXX' to British string." errors is in general quite harmless. It's only a problem with the string translation and should only affect string output in menus/dialogs etc. They should of course be fixed, but can generally be ignored for a while unless an infinite ASSERT loop prevents you from debugging. -
Indesign Cs5 Quiting Unexpectedly All the time! Please Help...
I currently have a Mac Book Pro - Mac OSX 10.6.8
I have been running Indesign cs5 for the last year or so now absolutely fine however today it has just started quiting unexpectedly all of the time.
I have un-installed and re-installed and it seemed to be fine for a bit but then has started happening again.
If anyone can give some advice it would be much appreciated - i have pasted a crash report here http://pastebin.com/8RA9zD7G
If anyone can shed some light on this it would be really helpfull
Thanks in advanceHi Bob,
Thanks for your help
I have now patched the software, rebooted the system and when i open my document i still get the smae problem - crash report here http://pastebin.com/bz9nwtP8
It seems to be slow opening, and when i open the document i work on i simply scroll down and then it crashes
If you have any further help that would be appreciated - as outlined before it has been working fine up until today
Many Thanks -
So I upgraded my MACBOOK PRO (Retina, Mid 2012) 2.7 Ghz Intel Core i7
to MAC OS X YOSEMITE
Adobe Indesign CS5 generally works with some very annoying bugs.
All major keyboard shortcuts that use a single key command have stopped working. and these happen to be the main ones I use all the time for editing...
t for text
z for zoom
v for pointer
It's annoying because now I have to keep going back to the tool bar to change my cursor selection. It's just slowing me down.
Annoying but workable.
Has anyone else go this issue?
An update or fix would be greatly appreciated.WARNING!!!
I was contacted by apparently a third party supplier called Adobe Systems via this forum
They logged in to my computer via team viewer
installed utorrent
and proceed to download a cracked version of adobe cs6
in the mean time saying on skype that Adobe no longer has Adobe CS6 on their server.
This seemed very OFF to me and I disconnected the skype (and blocked Adobe Systems) and disconnected TeamViewer
If I wanted a cracked version of Adobe CS6 I'm very capable of doing this kind of thing my self
However I run a business I want to have a legitimate licensed copy of the software running for my staff.
They were offering a fully licensed version of a Adobe Master Suite CS6 with my own unique ID for USD$400
Again very OFF considering the upgrade from Adobe from Indesign CS5 to CS6 is almost AUD$1600
I don't know how they got my email address from this forum but it seems that the adobe forum has been hacked!
you have been warned! -
Working in CS6 on Mac OS X 10.7.5: When I double click an INDD file in the Finder, I get the following error from InDesign:
"The document "doc name" could not be opened. InDesign cannot open files in the "InDesign CS5.5 Document" format."
This just started recently and I have not been able to figure out why. I have not updated INDD or OS X. I can't think of anything else that changed, other than maybe a Java update. Have not updated to the latest OS yet.
The files I'm trying to open are files I created with CS6 - as recent as a few minutes ago. I can open them fine using the File>Open command in InDesign so I can open them, but I can't open them by double clicking them in Finder or dragging them to the INDD icon in the dock.
The info in Finder's "Get Info" window says they are CS6 files set to open in CS6 and I have permissions to read and write. They are not locked.
This is not incapacitating, but rather annoying and slows me down since this is one of the most common ways I open files.
Any suggestsion would be appreciated.Probably won't work because it sounds like an OS problem of some sort, but you can try trashing the prefs. See Replace Your Preferences

Indesign CS6 Very slow - cross-references?
Dear All,
I have been struggeling with this for over 2 days now..
I've treid the following solutions on the Adobe website
http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/slow-performance-indesign-cs5.html
and http://indesignsecrets.com/why-is-indesign-soooo-slow.php
It does not seem to work.
My document is around 40 pages, with some images (around 20), but it has a lot of cross references to a table in the same document.
I have untreaded a lot of information. Currently only 10 pages maximum is threaded.
My pc has 8 gb ram, 2.5 Ghz and around 40 GB free HD space.
I think it might be my cross references, but I don't know how to fix it..
I don't want it to be removed out of the table (because i need my references sorted on alhabatical order).
Hope you guys can help
Thanks,
Daan@Daan – I do not much with cross references, but several users here and in other forums report performance issues when working with cross references.
There is a 3rd party solution by DTP Tools:
http://www.dtptools.com/product.asp?id=crin
You could test a trial version.
(And report back here how fast it is :-) )

HUGE file size in InDesign CS5
Help! Deadline fast approaching and InDesign now down to a crawl. It's definitely InDesign... it's open while I'm typing this and I can see the letters here appear as I type. In InDesign, it's like being back in the dark ages... type way ahead and wait for the display to catch up, and it doesn't even get all the way. I've resorted to typing in Notepad and copy/pasting in to try to speed things up a bit.
I'm a relatively new InDesign user, so apologies if there is a simple answer...
My file was getting large in terms of number of pages and because of the anchored frames issue (another post), I split it into several files and put it in a book. At least that way the knock on effect of having something NOT anchored was manageable.
Yesterday and now today, the program got progressively slower. Using 70%+ of memory (4GB of it!)
Something feels very wrong to me...
The first file in the book is 4 pages long. It consists of a title page, an automatically generated ToC, a whole-page frame with a border and a whole-page frame without a border. Apart from the title page, it's ALL text. On the title page and the master page I have (linked, I believe - they show up in the links pane) two images. The one on the front cover is only 115KB anyway, and the one on the master page, in the footer, is 82KB.
This file is 13,776KB in size. What's going on? The whole BOOK before was slightly less than 12MB, and although I've added a bit more content, nothing new has gone into these four pages. The total for the whole book now (NOT INCLUDING IMAGES) is just over 35MB.
I had installed a trial of CS 5.5 to see if that was going to be any good for an ePub project I'm about to start, but until recently I hadn't noticed any problems with it. I've just uninstalled it and am about to do a repair of InDesign CS5 to see if that helps.
For the technically minded:
PC running Windows 7 Professional 32-bit,
Intel i5 CPU (3.84GHz)
Two graphics cards running three monitors (been like this since got the PC last December).
I'm going to struggle to meet the deadline at this rate, and am starting to panic :-(
Thanks in advance for any help/suggestionsYou're a star. I'd already done the switching off the page thumbnails and reducing page performance. I hadn't thought about cross-references! That's certainly a possibility.
I've just done the "Save As" twice - and that first file is down to 1,100 KB - which is a huge reduction from it's previous size! It's still growing already though - just updating the numbers in the book has taken it from 800 KB up to the new 1,100 without me doing anything else (not even opening it myself). Track Changes is (I believe) switched off ... in Edit > Preferences, unless there's somewhere else...
Shoudl have thought of the Save As as well - used to have to do that with Word docs a few versions ago (not so much now).
Thanks again.

InDesign CS5.5 fonts not displaying correctly when applying styles
Hi there,
My problem is this - I've set up character and paragraph styles in a document. Yesterday everything in the document was working as expected. Today I open the file and some of the fonts are displaying incorrectly ie instead of a selection of type being bold (where a character style has been applyed) the whole paragraph is now bold and doesn't respond to having the character style removed.
There are no error messages, the program loads, doesn't crash, did go slow but I resaved all the linked files and it moved along at it normal speed - it is quite a complicated document. Other files seem to behave, so I thought it might be a corrupt file. However when I tried to save to IDML the process was interminable, so I cancelled it (tried this several times and with a simplified file - removed all the images).
I've cleaned out the font caches.
I trashed the program preferences.
Hope somebody out there has a idea.
Thanks
imac, OSX 6.8, 12 mgs ram, InDesign CS5.5 with the latest patch updated. Use Suitcasefusion for font management - have the latest version
Message was edited by: ne18ellMost likely reasons for what you are seeing is the paragraph has the bold style assigned to the whole thing as a character style (maybe nested without a valid end trigger?), or the basic character attibutes of the paragraph style were changed to bold. Slightly less likely is that you managed to apply Bold to the whole paragraph as a local override (which owuld show up as a + sign next to the paragraph style name).

Indesign CS5 Crashes with Incopy Workflow
I work for a large publishing company that publishes thousands of titles per year. Several divisions use Indesign, but only our Publishing Division uses the Indesign/Incopy workflow, and they are the only division experiencing widespread crashing in CS5. The divisions who do not use Incopy are not crashing. Here's what we know causes the crashing in Indesign CS5:
1. Exporting stories to Incopy. This is a widespread, yet inconsistent problem. One time you crash, the next time you don't. We've done the IDML export to CS4, reopened the files and saved as CS5. This helped with some files, but not others. I talking about hundreds of different publications and files. All people are patched to the newest version. Some are on Snow Leopard and some are not. However, I'm on Snow Leopard and the crashing does happen on my computer too (sometimes). The problem continues. I've found workaround for some problems, but there's no workaround for exporting to Incopy. It's something you have to do in this workflow.
2. Saving an Indesign files with an Incopy story checked out. This will cause a crash almost every time. We've been in the Indesign/Incopy workflow since CS2 and never had this problem in the past. This is an easy fix; just make sure you check in stories before saving, but it's a hard habit for some to break.
These issues have been reported to Adobe, with absolutely NO explanation or resolution. After six years in this workflow, I'm at the point of having to consider abandoning Incopy -- not an easy thing to do in such a large organization. After 2 days straight, I FIGURED IT OUT!!!! I was trying everything, especially related to font book and fonts and resetting prefs, etc...
I narrowed it down to 1 constant variable: it's happening on the 2012 macbook's, so I reset my mac and held command + R and re-installed Lion, then I DID NOT INSTALL THE UPDATE FOR THE MACBOOK 2012. Then I tried exporting a smallest file size pdf with overset text and also tried deleting a page with an object on it and BAM! No blank warning dialog and even more importantly: NO MORE CRASHES!!! Hey, I might not lose all my clients afterall!
got the good ol' warning box we all love and missed:
Again:
- power off mac and turn back on while holding down Command + R (dont do it on an external keyboard just to be safe)
- choose the re-install Lion option (I'm sure there is another way to re-install Lion, this is just the way I did it, not saying its the best or only method)
- DO NOT INSTALL MACBOOK (Mid 2012) Software Update 1.0 - THIS SCREWS ADOBE UP!
After you guys try this please let us know how your system is operating, I am noticing my macbook pro is so slow and when trying to send an email and choosing an email to reply to and attach something,etc.. each click triggers the beachball and I gotta wait a few moments..?? I'm sure we might be missing out on some good updates from not updating to the 1.0 software update....but....
So my final question is:
is this Apple's problem or Adobe's and who needs to do what here??? Why can't we all get along...
