InDesign CS5 to PDF and Image Paths

Hi, all
When I export my InDesign layouts as PDFs, is it possible to include somewhere, somehow in the PDFs the image-path information of all images in the layout?

This is not a one-step solution, but it would give you what you want:
Choose File > Package. At the bottom of the dialog, click Report... This will save a text file with all the information you'd want about the file, including the path of all linked graphics. If you wish to could create a PDF of that text file, and merge it or send it along with the PDF for the document.

  • Export an InDesign file to PDF and InDesign freezes and quits

I keep trying to export an InDesign file to PDF and InDesign keeps freezing up and quitting. This is the first time it's done this, I have never had a problem before.I recently added Suitcase Fusion to my computer and wondered if this was the cause, or if there is something else wrong.

Try disabling the suitcase plugin and see if it continues (you'd probably have other problems, too, though, if it's the culprit). Often it's a bit of bad text or an image. See Adobe Community: File Crashing on Output - printing/PDF/other for lots of troubleshooting tips.

  • InDesign CS5.5 PDFs cause Indesign 2.0 on OS9 to quite when importing

InDesign CS5.5 PDFs cause Indesign 2.0 on OS9 to quite when importing. Is there a fix for this?
I'm trying to trouble shoot a client issue and telling them to upgrade is not an option.

Try the press quality setting. It should work.
And suggesting that they upgrade is certainly option you should present them with. If they don’t want to, that’s another issue all together.

  • Indesign CS5 Interactive PDF not really an Interactive PDF?

I have created an online Interactive SWF file using Indesign for a corporate Newsletter and it works fine.
However, when asked if I could produce a PDF version I thought "sure, just convert it to an Interactive PDF!"
I was shocked to find that it does not work and that basically I had to rip the whole thing apart and rebuild it to make it a PDF, as creating hyperlinks instead of button actions to me is not an Interative PDF, which is all it seems to infer.
All of the Object States had to be dismantled and placed on seperate pages.
None of the Buttons created to go to different pages worked anymore, I had to remove the button states from the objects and convert them using Hyperlinks and Hyperlink Destinations, a lot of work.
Surely, since Adobe own Indesign and also own Acrobat it would be possible to convert an Indesign Project to PDF and have the buttons work correctly?
Also, none of the animations work, these had to be scrapped.
Any plans for a future release to rectify this and the reduce workflow?

If you spent any time looking at these features you would have seen that they are clearly SWF only.
The workaround for this is to export the SWF and place it in a PDF.

  • InDesign CS5 interactive PDF export not functioning

Hey guys, I have been starting to work with some interactive designs within InDesign CS5, mainly animations (menu fly out on mouse over, moving object on page load) . However each time I have exported my work as an interactive PDF, nothing functions, it all appears as static images. I have tried viewing in Acrobat XI, Adobe Reader, Safari.. all with the same result.
I have used the preview function to review that animation is working properly before exporting and every works flawless, it just doesn't export any of this. I have tried editing a new PDF preset and exporting that way. I have tried both "Interactive" and "Interactive for PDF" modes as well, in case that matters. I have had absolutely no luck and hope someone can find something I must have missed? Thanks for the help on this!

Animations are not supported natively in PDF files... Preview shows you just a Flash/SWF preview, not PDF preview.
Only way to use animations in PDF files is to create Flash/SWF file which includes animation(s), place that SWF to InDesign and export Interactive PDF after that.
And it´s just a work-around, not very good one IMO.... I don´t believe you can do animated menus with that technique....

  • Resaving pdfs and image quality

I have clients submit ads as pdfs but sometimes I need to recreate the pdf because the client forgot to include all printer marks, or I need to convert a spot to process, or whatever. The way I do it is to create a new InDesign CS3 file, place the pdf file into it, and export to pdf using my preset. My question is does importing a pdf file into ID and then exporting back into pdf affect image quality, even slightly assuming the compression settings are the same in the export to pdf' dialog box - mainly all compression set to none?
    Thanks.

    New Bie:
Many of the adjustments you want to make can be done to the PDF within Acrobat if you have the Acrobat Professional version.
Such as: convert colors, add printers marks and change Page Box sizes.
You'll find these tools under the "Advanced" menu > "Print Production"
And also under the "Document" menu > Crop Pages > Change Page Size

  • InDesign CS5 is crashing and will not let me accomplish anything

Although I haven’t done anything different from usual, in the last two weeks Indesign CS5 has been crashing. Now, since Friday it will not let me do any work at all. As soon as I start to work, this message pops up and the program closes:
"Adobe InDesign CS5 has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
My operating system is Windows 7, 64-bit. So far my tech support has run spyware, malware, reinstalled, updated, but nothing works. Even my older files that were previously fine are crashing.
I hope you can help me figure out how to solve this problem. I'm at a standstill.

(sorry for the delay, I am still swamped.)
I suspect an uninstall and reinstall is in order. Hopefully that is all that is required, but if not, you've got some sluething to do to find your problem. Windows 7 crash reporting is essentially non-existent in any helpful way, but I believe John has some thoughts on programs your IT department might be able to run to help diagnose what's going on.
    Wait, I do? I'm not 100% sure, but let's see. :-)
I think the first question is, do you or your tech have any idea what might have changed in your system that could conceivably led to problems?
This part is kind of a red flag:
Thanks Daniel. I've sent your response over to my network tech support since I don't seem to have access to that file. I'm not sure it's the answer because of this scenario: I can open an old file that has been fine, nothing else is open, but when I start to use it, it crashes. I've narrowed the crash down to working with images, I think.
It sounds like InDesign can't read part of your user profile directory?
And that, then, suggests a basic diagnostic step: create a new user account and test there (with a copy of the file!).
With respect to crash diagnostics...the way to examine crashes under Windows 7 is to install WinDBG. It is difficult to use and confusing to install, but your IT department can probably manage it. This will allow you to get a stack trace, which is the diagnostic tool that will tell us what InDesign is doing at the time of the crash.
    So, yeah.

  • InDesign CS5 exports PDFs where EPS elements have low resolution

I am rather new to InDesign CS5. I am currently working on a magazine, where I use graphics in TIFF and EPS. The exported PDF shows graphics in correct quality (300 dpi - TIFF) and graphics with poor resolution -> EPS. How is that even possible? The problem disappears when I use .AI, but it should work with EPS to, shouldn't it?
I figured that it might have something to do with the Transparency Flattener Presets, am I right? My presets are set to "low resolution" and it is not possible to set them to "hight resolution", as InDesign refuses to remember those settings.
    Please help!

Well, I was just trying to figure out why it's happening and thought that it might have something to do with the transparency flattening.
My colleagues, who also work with InDesign (althought with older versions), always use EPS and they never have problems. But your advice is not to use EPS format, am I right?

  • Application to export InDesign document to pdf or image

    Hello,
We are developing a java web-app and the user (among other things) download an InDesign file from the server, edit it, and upload it again, but we need a way to show, inside our web-app, a preview of the file, and also we need our application to be able to send that preview to the printer, inside a form.
So I wish to know if is there some application to convert InDesign files to pdf or some image format, like jpg, png, etc., that we could call from our web-app, throught the command line.
    Thanks.

We'd have to see the file to know for sure, but this sounds like a transparency flattening issue. Thickened text is indicative of it being converted to outlines, whcih can happen when it interacts with transparency. It's not clear if your white lines are around theindividual glyphs, or around the entire areas. The latter is also a common flattenign artifact called "stitching" that shows up on screen and in low resoution printing.
The first bit of advice is to keep your text at the top of the stacking order, above transparency, shadows, and other effects. It sometimes helps to have a top layer just for text. The way to eliminate these artifacts 100% of the time is to not flatten transparency at all, which is possible in Print PDFs, but alas, not in Interactive.

  • InDesign Export to PDF and PDF Destinations/Bookmarks

    Hello all,
I am new to this forum and am not sure where the most appropriate location for this question is. But, here goes:
We are adding Bookmarks to an InDesign Doc then exporting it to a PDF. In the Acrobat Reader and the IE Acrobat reader the bookmarks work just fine. Here his where the problem is. I have to link to the PDF's bookmarks from a web page. I have come to find out that I can't link directly to a bookmark but I have to link to a "Destination."
The PDF Exporter or InDesign adds a Destination name that is not the same as the bookmark name. It includes the indd file name and the part of the sentience that the book mark is next to.
I have used Adobe Acrobat Professional to create a custom Destination that is one word without spaces. I am able to link to that destination but I can't link to any of the destinations that either InDesign or the PDF exporter created.
Does anyone know how to force the Destinations names to be set to the name of the bookmark that is being mapped to it? Or, how to link to a bookmark name rather then a Destination.
I have also did some searching for some VB to Acrobat scripting and found that I can't edit Destination names.
This is for an on going project that is sure to have a lot of updates. We do not want to have to goto Acrobat and fix the Destinations by hand for every update. Plus, we don't want to link to the page number because we are never sure when pages will change and again do not want to always fix the PDF or HTML index page every time.
    Thank you for your time,

Michael, I've got one solution that meets my needs but maybe only part of your needs:
    Buy AutoBookmark from Evermap:  http://www.evermap.com/autobookmark.asp#Creating%20Destinations%20From%20Bookmarks
It's a plugin to Adobe Acrobat (not Reader), but it works only in MS Windows, not Mac.
After you've installed that plugin, Acrobat's Plug Ins menu has a Destinations menu item with some choices you're going to use.
Open with Acrobat, the PDF file that has the destination names that have that bothersome <filename>.indd prefix.  Use the Plug Ins > Destinations menu's item to export the destinations as a plain text file.
Edit the resulting plain text file with any plain text editor.  Globally search and replace the filename prefix with nothing.  Save and close that file.
Back in the Acrobat window of your PDF file, use the Destinations menu's choice to delete all destinations.
Now use the Destinations menu to import the destinations file you just edited.
    Voila.
BUT the part of your problem that this won't solve, is the presence of a portion of the sentence in the destination.  That's not a problem for me, because I'm creating all my destinations as parts of the sentence.

  • Why are PDF and Image Files embedded in all sent mail messages?

When sending mail with either PDF or Image Files as attachments, the person receiving the message does get the attachment, but the files are also embedded in the mail message. This will display the image file below my text, however with a PDF, it's just trying to display as an image but is just lots of garbled characters. Word docs are not embedded, just attached. Any ideas how to prevent this? I'm attaching files by using the attach button and browsing for the file like normal. Thanks!

View menu (alt+V) > Display attachments inline.

  • Interactive pdf using indesign CS5 (pop out graphic image)

Trying to figure out how to create a pop out image of a thumbnail.  Making a digital portfolio for a class project and I would like to have thumbnails of my work on each page of the interactive pdf.  When someone rolls over the thumbnail I would like for a larger version of it to appear.  I have found a tutorial on this however I ran into a stumbling block when the very first step showed him using "object styles".  In his menu was a style called popout graphic (or something similar) and that does not appear in my object styles menu.  I have been looking for this for about 45 minutes now, going through every little menu and clicking on every possible thing to see if I can locate it.  I'm really desperate at this point this project is due on Monday so I hope someone can save me.  Thank you!

Please post in the InDesign forum. This forum is for suite specific issues only.
