InDesign CS5: Why do hidden codes turn from blue to red?

InDesign CS5: I have a 20 page indesign document file that is part of a 23 document/chapter InDesign book. The hidden codes are light blue through chapters 1 and 2. Then, in the middle of chapter 3, at the bottom of the 10th page, the hidden codes turn red through the end of that chapter. The next chapter resumes solid blue hidden codes. What does the red mean and what do I need to do to correct that. Thank you.

Sounds like that text frame that holds the hidden characters is on a different Layer.

    Hi Peter,
I had the same problem and I didn't find any other solution than change the
display mode to 256 color mode.

  • InDesign CS5 crashes when Marks/Bleed turned ON!

I have an issue that I can not resolved. It's been happening since CS4 InDesign and still continues with CS5.  I have no problems printing to our Canon iR C5180 and/or creating PDFs from InDesign. BUT when I turn on all or some of the "Marks/Bleed" in the print dialogue box the whole application unexpectedly quits/crashes.
I've trashed the preferences with the hopes that this would be a quick fix but not dice. Then, I created a NEW document with only a single box, no text and it still crashed. I finally created a new user account and opened it InDesign and it WORKED! I have no idea what InDesign seems to conflict with and have NO idea how to figure it out? Again, it only crashes when I have any or all of the "marks/bleed" check On. Strange.
It's my production machine and I really can't start deleting everything until it works. It'll take a week just to do it. When it does crash it does generate a log but I'm not sure if the log gives any clues as to what caused the crash.
Any help or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

Well... I shut off all the fonts for the exception of the System fonts, which include Helvetica.  I also went as far as to copy the "Adobe InDesign" preference folder from the New user and replace it main accounts preference. In both cases, still getting the same result. Crashes all the time. On the new user account I have absolutely no problems. Works just fine. Even with tons of fonts open.
What would be the main differences of the two accounts, that's causing such a mess? Can't figure it out.

  • InDesign CS5 will not import Alpha Channels from images saved in Photoshop CS6

Just searched through the forums to find this thread in the (now-Read Only) Photoshop CS6 Beta forum:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4310886
Which is exactly the same issue I'm having. I just cropped about a 1000 images with alphas originally created in PS5 and resaved using PS6.
My client still uses CS5 and the images won't recognize the alpha channels in inDesign5.
I see in this thread that it said a fix for older versions of inDesign was being worked on, this was back in April.
Any news on these fixes? (before I open PS5 and resave all these files)

    Hi Peter,
The images in question all use alpha channels to mask out the image backgrounds (usually white) in InDesign layouts.
I opened the images in PS6 to crop out excess background (to get file size down) and saved the new files.
When I go to import the images one by one into InDesign 5 (via Cmd-D, Import options ticked) the Alpha Channel pull down menu is greyed out and I'm unable to select the Alpha Channel.
If I open the image in PS5 and resave, I'm then able to access the Alpha channels in ID5... but that's a lot of images to go back through to fix.
I also tried opening the layout in ID6 (where the alpha channels do work) and saving down to the idml format. When opening up in ID5 the alpha channel is no longer recognized and the background of the image that was masked out is now visible.
    Cheers,
    Alan

  • HELP: Full Image Turns Completely Blue or Red

When I am making adjustments to an image, the ENTIRE image will suddenly turn a BRIGHT BLUE (sometimes a BRIGHT RED) You can not see any image at all, just the SOLID color. Also the main histogram flat lines.
If I click on the loupe, then I can see the picture through the magnified area, but only the solid color in the smaller targeting area.
If I systematically, uncheck the Exposure, Enhance, Levels... etc., the solid color disappears and the image is viewable again. When I re-check the section that I unchecked when the image re-appeared, the image again turns back into a solid color.
Has anyone experience this problem, if so, were you able to figure out the cause and hope to prevent it from happening.
The solid color does not seem to affect how the image is printed or exported, just in the viewing - which kind of makes it difficult to make adjustments.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Thanks for the tip. Maybe turning the Highlight on and off with resolve the immediate problem. I sure do like the Highlights though!!!
The solid color thing is very weird. If I switch on and off one of the modification sections enough times, the solid color will eventually stay off, but not permanently. I haven't tried opt-shift-h yet, but I will the next time the solid color appears.
    Thanks
    Gary

  • Do I need to be concerned that my highlight on everything went from blue to red?

Do I need to be concerned that for no reason all my highlight both on e-mail and excel went from a blue shade to a red shade?  I am not the only user so maybe someone changed it.

  • Corrupted InDesign CS5 files

Hi, I have a few corrupted indesign CS5 files - had to recover them from my laptop. However, now when I try to open them I get "corrupted file" "error 5".  Does anyone know how I can open these.
I have tried opening as a copy etc, but to no avail. Thanks in advance.

Error Code 5 is basically a flatline.
You could try a service like Markzware, see if they recover your file by converting it to quark and back again (I know seems like a very wrong work flow).
But I've heard of this working in the past. I think they'll do the conversion for you and if it works you will need to pay the going rate for the files back (not 100% sure on how they work but that's my understanding)

  • PDF of InDesign CS5.5 has text drift in a table

In InDesign CS5.5 I have a large table (36 rows, 17 columns). The content is prices, right-aligned, two decimal places.
When I export as a PDF, the numbers slowly shift, moving top to bottom, either to the left or right (this happens on many (but not all) different pages), for 20-25 rows, at which point the positioning is corrected. Total deviation from row 1 until the correction varies, from 0.0067 inches to 0.0109 inches.
This happens only when exporting a PDF from InDesign (CS5.5). If I print from the .indd the problem is not there. If I print a .ps and use Distiller, the resulting PDF is fine.
All cells have the same settings as far as padding, tabs, type size.
I'll post this in the InDesign forums as well.

Steve, I don't seem to be able to move this back -- missing some privileges I think. This was a cross-post -- already in the ID forum -- and he was hoping maybe someone in Acrobat had more ideas. Can you move it back again?

  • Can't install InDesign CS5.5 Upgrade

I've just purchased the InDesign CS5.5 upgrade to update myself from InDesign CS2 (both for Mac and Australian market). The Installation recognizes my new serial number, but not my previous CS2 serial number that I have to key in as I don't have InDesign CS2 installed anymore (and don't want to as it will only run in Classic mode). What's the solution??? Both are legitimate products. Would like some answers please.

You have to contact Adobe Support for this,
When you will enter the Adobe CS5 serial number and then click next the Indesign cs2 to be selected and then enter its serila number.
If it gets accepted it will get install other wise you need to contact the Adobe to get it sorted.

  • Pasting text into indesign CS5 causes constant crashing

We have a problem with one of our computers and indesign CS5. When they paste text from any other program into indesign it crashes. It may be OK for 10 minutes or so but then crashes. This is a big job with lots of business cards and they need to copy and paste text from excel and then into indesign. She gets through 4 or 5 and then it crashes. We have deleted preferences a few times and tried pasting into text edit first but it always ends up crashing indesign. It happens when text is pasted from a pdf or word also.
    Any ideas?
    TR

Not a very timely reply but, I was being vexed as well with copying from one InDesign document to another.  The original and the destination were both two color newsletters.  I would copy an entire page and switch to the destination document to paste it.  Unfortunately, once the Command-C was initiated, the swirling ball of death eventually resulted in a crash.  After three attempts and restarting my computer, I tried it again but, same result.
Then, I copied only one element at a time (graphic, then a text box, grouped text and graphic...etc.)  Not until I came to a single Placed EPS graphic (Illustrator EPS) did it initiate the death spiral. (I'd previously deleted all unused colors just in case)
I opened the offending file and noticed that a radial gradient contained a spot color and a CMYK mix (instead of a percentage of the same spot color).  That was all it appeared to be... so far.  A bit odd that THAT would hang such a powerful suite of software.
I plan to try a full page copy/paste to see if that was indeed the problem.
Computer Info: 2009 MAC Tower, 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 8GB RAM, OS 10.6.8, CS6. (and I was completely sober)
PS: I tried the full page copy/paste and, it worked without a hiccup.

  • Why does black turn grey when creating a pdf from InDesign CS5??

Why do blacks turn to grey when I create/export a pdf from InDesign CS5?

Unfortunately, things like this are rarely glitchy little programming errors but deep, by-design, problems with using colour management. Usually you are getting exactly what you asked for, just not what you want, and the more colour management options there are, the more likely this is.
There are many possible causes, but one of the easiest to do is and hardest to spot is applying a CMYK profile in InDesign export, and a different one through Photoshop settings. This is actually demanding that colours be converted for the worst! Since your print workflow will be different, a work-around of rich black is likely to make things worse.
So the first thing to check is whether the colours you indended made it to the PDF, indeed. Output Preview is the first tool to use (as well as inspecting plates, you can hover over points to check the colour mix).
Also, go to your PDF export under the "Output" tab which includes colour and PDF/X. Either send a screen shot, or read off all of the the settings there.

  • PDF files turns white after exporting from InDesign CS5

    Hi all
When I export PDF files fom inDesign CS5 they turn out all white when I open them in Acrobat Reader (I´ve tried both in version 9 and the latest version). When I first open the PDF it seems to be ok but as soon as I zoom out it turns white. Anyone have a clue or have experienced the same issues?
    Thanks a lot
    /warpig

Is this something you can share? Put the PDF on a server someplace and post a link here, if you can. If you don't have your own server, you can use a service like YouSendIt.com.
What settings are you using for the export? What happens in ID if you go to Preview mode?

  • Why is Indesign CS5.5 Sooooo Slow When it Goes to Deeeper of the Document

    Hi all,
I've got a question recently in using Indesign CS5.5 on a MacbookPro with i7 processor, 8GB RAM and MacOS LION 10.7.2. The interaction turns to be extremely slow when I go deeper of the document. The response is quick at the beginning of the document, but when I turn to 15 pages or later, it takes several seconds to change font and adjust the text frame. I have almost tried all the solutions including readjust the virtual memory or shut down other applications while editing my Indesign file, but it just keeps performing this way.
Is there anyone who has the same problem with me? I hope I can get some useful suggestions from you guys. Thanks!

The blog post below lists several reasons why InDesign can be slow:

  • Why do I have to reinstall InDesign CS5.5 at every start-up?

I've had InDesign CS5.5 only a few days and have had to reinstall it everyday. It installed fine from the disk the first time. I used it for a couple hours, ran perfectly. I turned off my laptop that night and the next morning when I went to use InDesign again I received the following error message and was unable to access the software:
Adobe InDesign is missing required files. Please reinstall.
    Missing files: \Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Type Support\...\CP1252.TXT
Each time I have reinstalled and once again the program works fine. Until I turn off my laptop. I thought an old trial of InDesign might be part of the issue but I've uninstalled all that and still have the same problem.
Running Windows 7 Professional on a Dell Vostro laptop. Intel i5. 4GB RAM
Thanks in advance for any help.

There have been two similar reports in the last year or so that I can find, and it looks like an installer problem when CS3 was previously installed (did you have CS3 or CS4 installed and remove it?).
What seems to be happening is that the type support files aren't properly written to the correct location, and it wasn't entirely clear to me this morning if either previous report was finally resolved. That said, I'd do the following:
    Uninstall using Windows control panel.
    Reboot
Run the CS5 clean tool: Resolve installation problems with CS5 Cleaner Tool
Run MSconfig and trun off non-essential startups, especially antivirus, browser helpers and toolbars, iTunes, and instant messengers.
Reinstall any versions you want, in chronological order. Be sure InDesign is installed into the Program Files (x86) folder (this should happen automatically if you leave the default location).
Run MSconfig again and restore normal startup.

  • Indesign CS5 crashing public.dll when copying pages from one document to another

    Hello,
I have several Lenovo W520 (Core i7-2720, 8GB ram, Quadro 1000M) and a couple Dell M6500 (Core i7, 4GB ram, Quadro FX 2800M) all running Windows 7 Pro x64, the latest video drivers and Adobe CS5, including Indesign 7.0.4.  We have several different Indesign docs that for the purpose of interactive Table of Contents, are copying pages from one to another to end up with one master document.  On the majority of the documents, copying as few as one page to another doc crashes Indesign with the windows system error below.
Faulting application name: InDesign.exe, version: 7.0.4.553, time stamp: 0x4d890440

We have tried working with the documents on different machines (both specs outlined above), and copying different pages from one doc to another in varying quantities.  The documents do not have any link errors or other references that need to be corrected.
Any suggestions or other things to look at?
    Thanks.

HI. Same problem Here. i will now trying to reinstall the software. hopefully it will help me.
