InDesign CS6 not tagging interactive PDF

I don't know if I am doing something wrong but I can't get InDesign to export a properly tagged PDF.
Can anybody please try the following steps and confirm the results:
Create a new document in InDesign
Draw a text box on the document
Type "Text" in the text box
Create new paragraph style called "My heading"
Under Export Tagging in the Paragraph Style Options select "H1" under PDF->Tag
Add the text box to the Articles panel
In the Articles panel fly out menu activate Use for Reading Order in Tagged PDF
Export document as Adobe PDF (Interactive)
In the Export to Interactive PDF options window both options for Tagged PDF are checked
Open the document in Acrobat Pro
Open the Tags navigation pane
Expand the tag hierarchy
If the document is tagged correctly one of the tags should be labeled <H1> . Instead min is labeled what I called it within InDesign <My_heading>. This is essentially making larger documents with multiple heading levels inaccessible.
Can anybody else confirm this issue or provide a fix (other than manually changing tags from within Acrobat Pro)?

I tested in InDesign CC. (This bug would not be fixed in InDesign CS6.)
I can confirm that this bug is still in InDesign CC (see illustration below).
I don't know how to fix this except manually in Acrobat. (I don't normally work with accessibiility issues.)
I'd suggest reporting the bug here:

How can I export an InDesign document as an interactive PDF for mobile devices?

Avoid SWF at all cost and export using Adobe PDF (interactive).
The experience will depend on the PDF reader that the user has installed.

• InDesign CS6 exporting to Adobe PDF (Interactive)

Created an interactive form in InDesign CS6, but when I export to a PDF file, using Adobe PDF (Interactive), the purple bar "Please fill out the following form…" is not visible in my PDF file.
PLEASE NOTE: My Adobe Acrobat Pro preferences do not have the check mark on under >Form >Always hide forms document message bar. The check mark is off.
I want the purple box to be visible in my interactive form, yet it is not. WHY????

Because this isn't really an InDesign question, I'd post this in this Acrobat Pro forum:
http://forums.adobe.com/community/acrobat/forms
That's never worked that way for me.

• InDesign CS6 & CC - form field PDF output very erratic, unusable, disappointing ...failure.

Hi
Until very recently, my workflow has been to add the form fields in Acrobat. However due to problems getting form fields to tag properly in this workflow the client has requested that the form fields be added in InDesign which on one page or very simple tests forms appeared to work fine. Based on successful tests with single page test documents we embarked on a much larger job with a very false sense of confidence
I've just spent several days adding complex form fields to a 26 page form in multiple languages which includes text fields, check boxes and combo boxes. When output as an interactive PDF, several of the text fields and combo boxes do not highlight as form fields, but when clicked on repeatedly sometimes behave as check boxes, not as text input fields and sometimes highlight as a field when moused over, but are otherwise inert. I have tried using both text frames and images frames to create the text fields from indesign with similar results.
Check boxes sometimes work, in other cases, give an "on" value rather than a check mark which disappears when you click on another check box or move your curser off the check box.
d as being capable of
I've spent several days now, reinstalling software, downloading the CC trial version to see if a later version would give better results, Outpting single pages, smaller page batches but nothing I have tried has improved this problem. The results are basically unusable, which is a major disappointment because it means that InDesign is incapable of performing a task it is advertised as being capable of. I am about to begin the tedious task of rebuilding this form in acrobat, but hope that someone from adobe will be willing to weigh in on this subject. If needed I can provide both the source files and the disappointing results.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions on salvaging something from this situation

Hi Derek
Thanks for sounding in. Yes, up until now I have been doing the layout in InDesign and adding form fields in Acrobat. But there are two major flaws with this workflow;
1. there is no way to properly tag form fields in acrobat as the accessibility tool "Add form fields to tags" does not appear to do anything in the way of adding tags, so in the age of accessibility these forms are basically unusable to a person using a blind reader
2. when the client makes edits (which they always do), you have a big workflow downstream, at the very least you have to go through and cut and paste from the old PDF to the new PDF
Besides which Adobe has boldly made the claim that, as of CS6, the form fields can be set-up in InDesign...

• CS6: Exporting to Interactive PDF Freezes

Hi guys, I'm relatively new with InDesign and currently I'm having a problem with exporting to interactive pdf. My version is CS6 8.0.1
I'm drafting a booklet for a school and each page looks something like this:
The picture here shows page  28-29 (top) and 30-31 (bottom). Each of these are linked AI files. These AI files have linked jpegs or psd files in them, with types and basic vector objects.
Then I tried exporting to interactive pdf -->
however, InDesign keeps freezing around these page ranges:
I cannot click cancel nor anything except force quitting InDesign. Tried again, same thing happened. I thought maybe I was too hasty so I went to grab dinner which took about 30 minutes. Walked back into my room, InDesign never completed the export, so I force it to quit again.
After a few times, I'd thought the problem could be with the AI links in page range 30-31 where it keeps getting stuck. I experimented by deleting 4 linked AI files on top of page 30-31:
And now I can export to interactive PDF successfully. I opened up the pdf with Acrobat Reader and everything seems normal.
So I'd figure that there's a problem with one (or more) of the four removed linked AI files. But just to be sure, I tried exporting it again without the 4 linked files. This time though, the same problem occured - InDesign freezes while exporting PDF and I can't do nothing but force quit the program.
I then tried exporting page 1-29 by itself (the range which seems to be fine) multiple times - no problem. I've exported page 1-29 five successive times in a roll with no problem.
Then I tried exporting page 30-35 (the rest of the book), then here's what confused me even more. I can export it successfully the first time. The second time though, InDesign freezes again.
I then tried exporting page 30-35 over and over to see get a feel of ratio between successful vs failure. The result is erratic. I failed once, then successfully exported page 30-35 three times in a roll. After getting three successful export, I tried exporting the whole book again - to my surprise, this time it went through. Checked the pdf with Acrobat Reader, everything looks fine. Then I tried exporting the whole book once more, and again, it's successul. However, the third time I tried exporting the whole book, the program freezes again.
Now I'm not even sure what to think. What is root of the problem? Is it InDesign itself, or is it the linked AI files toward the end of the book? To give you more information:
- the first 29 pages are not entirely consisted of linked AI files unlike page 30-35. Page 1-29 overall is lighter while Page 30-35 consists off linked AI files that take more space
- I've updated all the links. There's no links with triangle + exclamantion.
- I use iMac 10.8.5 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 16 GB
I can continue working for now since I've successfully exported a copy for my client, but it bounds to happen again. Any advice is appreciated, thank you!

Hi Ankit, thank you for your reply.
I've managed to update InDesign to 10.8.5 from 10.8.1
I downloaded the newest version of AAM, and after installing it, the updates under help menu in InDesign finally notified me that there were updates to be made.
Back on exporting to interactive pdf issue, still doesn't solve the problem.
If I export the whole document it keeps freezing; however, if I split by exporting page 28-31 (pages where it usually get stuck) by itself, then exporting the rest without page 28-31, then it works. I can get around it so it's not a big problem anymore, but I'd like to get answers to why InDesign would behave this way. Was the overall file too big so it froze? Would be nice if in the future I don't run into a similar problem - it takes time for me to export different sections of the book to avoid the program freezing, then it takes more time for me to merge two pdfs into one.
Here's what I've done so far:
- clear InDesign preferences
- disable Extensis plug-in
- migrate the pages to a new document
- update to newest InDesign version
- save as IDML then re-export
- package, then re-export
- first-aid on disk utility on my OSX (no problem found)
- delete all unused styles
- change all the embedded .ai files to .pdf (not editable)
If someone else has any idea, please advice. Thank you

• SWF files in InDesign for export as Interactive PDF

I am creating an interactive PDF file which contains a multi-state slide show with navigation buttons that I created in InDesign. Since that will not display and "work" in an interactive PDF I exported a .swf file of the slide show to place in the final InDesign page layout. The interactive PDF works just fine when viewed in Acrobat, but the .swf file of the slide show moves around and changes scale depending on the view scale in Acrobat so that it no longer stays where it was intended in the InDesign layout. I suspect that I exported the .swf slide show from the InDesign file incorrectly but I can't figure out what the peoblem is.

What version of InDesign? Is it fully patched?
There was a bug in the initial release of CS5 that caused this type of behavior but it was fixed in a dot release.

• Indesign CS6 not so kosher

Hello,
Please could somebody help - this is driving me nuts.
I am Running Indesign CS6.0.1 on an Imac (3ghz - 4gb Ram - Intel Core 2 Duo) using Lion 10.7.3.
I have designed a Catalogue for my company which is 85 pages. This is the first catalogue I have produced on CS6, but have been using Indesign for many many years with no problems.
The problem I am facing is that when I try to print the Book of the catalogue, it spools the first 40 odd pages with no problem, but then seems to randomly get stuck on subsequent pages. Like I said the page it gets stuck on is random, sometimes page 47, sometimes page 55 etc. I have gone into linked files and edited and fixed anything that I thought might be causing problems, to no avail.
I tried to convert to PDF, to then print via Acrobat. The same problem arises. Randomly gets stuck on pages.
I have now tried to split print the catalogue, ie first half, then second half.  The first half (33 pages), has printed with no problem, but the second half is now stuck on page 60.
In addition to this. on certain occasions, it will just crash. This to seems to be random, as I have been busy with the exct same actions.
I have deleted preferences & saved data, updated to latest version. I have tried to print on another colleague's Mac Pro (he has 6gb Ram - same OS & indesign version), still with no change in result.
Other than reisntalling lower verson of Indesign, and coverting all my documents, I am at my wits end on how to solve this problem.
If anybody could help - I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks
Grant

Hi Dov,
Thank you for your quick response - it is greatly appreciated.
To clarify a little - The problem is occurring when I try to print directly to the Printer from Indesign. But I have been unable to complete the PDF export, as the same problem occurs when exporting, as when printing. I.e. The progress gets stalled on random pages. So I have been unable to try and print form Acrobat, or to even view the PDF document. (incomplete export).
The Printer we are using is a Canon iR ADV C5051 Laser printer.
I completely agree with you on need or lack there of, of re-installing.
I have just tried to split print the Book in 3 sections. To test if there are any problems in any particular parts of the book / documents, and whittle down the problem areas. This has spooled through & printed with no problems.  Unfortunately this is not a practical way forward for me, when it comes time for me to print these catalogues out in bulk. (I print several hundred catalogues).
Please see below for the Link to the PDF catalogue. Again I have had to export the Book in sections and then combine it in Acrobat.

Thanks again for your timeous response.

• What is the easy way to create a crossword with InDesign CS5 for a interactive pdf?

I mean I want to create a pdf magazine and i like to include a crossword. I read somewhere that one way is create a crossword with an external software and include it in the ID project but I don't know any crossword software and if I add in my ID project, I only need to export like a interactive pdf? I would like that the users can use the crossword in online version.
Regards from Lima, Perú

Hi.
I'm not sure about what to you mean. But I create first the crossword with Excel, I mean to put the words in the right order and the questions and/or cue too. Then I create a table in InDesign and format some cells with black background and some borders. I upload both captures, from Excel and from InDesigne. Then with Adobe X Pro I create a form, so I can create singles inputs for the crossword.
I hope i understand your question.

• InDesign CS5 Book to Interactive PDF

Hi all,
Now in InDesign CS5 there is a more convenient option under File > Export... to make interactive PDFs with links, buttons, etc.
In exchange, in the traditional PDF Presets export workflow there are some changes, in the dialog box. Now there is an option "Interactive elements" and two options: "Export appearance" or "Not include".
That means that when I am dealing with an InDesign document with buttons, if I choose to make the PDF with the traditional way, I have to choose either if preserve just the appearance of buttons (but they no longer work) or just exclude them. OK...
Then I use File > Export... and choose Interactive PDF, then everything it's just OK.
BUT.... I am making an InDesign CS5 Book, where every file involved has buttons. In the Book window, I can export the whole book to PDF, but using the old-fashioned way that either includes just the appearance of buttons or excludes them! I'd like to export my Book into a fully interactive PDF
So what can I do?  or what am I missing?
Thanks a lot in advance.
Ignasi

When you choose to export the book out of the ID Book file, choose Interactive. The same settings come up as exporting the interactive PDF out of the individual ID file.

• URGENT indesign fails to export interactive pdf of 700 pages

Hi everyone!
This is my first time asking directly for help in the adobe forum, but god nows how many times i found good advice here before, searching for answers to rather simple AND complex questions.
My problem is:
I have a book made out of 17 files, summing a total of 706 pages.
This entire thing is supposed to be interactive - kind of a "consult on the go users manual" for in-house use at a company.
when i export the book in its total to an interactive .pdf (smallest version, 72 dpi) at about 405 pages it just stops, says that "an error ocurred exporting the .pdf file" and shuts down exporting (not the program though). (It also does not specify the error nor give an error report. it just stops and deletes the half-created pdf-file)
BUT if i export every file on its own as an individual interactive .pdf it works just fine and no problems appear.
my question now is: maybe indesign just not capable of exporting such a large interactive file? (with "only appearance" checked, it works just fine)
the larges file we did in the studio was about 350 pages long - and if i export the book in "2 sessions" (two documents of 350 pages) it takes quite a long time (about half an hour after getting past the last page) but in the end it works.
i thought about combining the various individual (working) pdf documents - but the links/buttons/etc. get all messed up.
has this happened to anybody?
does anybody know how to solve that problem - and if not, if there even is a way? at my understanding right now, it is just not possibe to export an interactive pdf of more than 400 pages from indesign.
supposedly i have to turn that document in tomorrow midday (european time) so it can be saved onto usb-pendrives for distribution... but right now i'm VERY lost.
i'd appreciate some advice, and even if it is a straight "it's not possible, too large of a document" would be nice just to get things in my head a little clearer and confront the client with what's REALLY posssible and what is simply not doeable.
THANK YOU SO MUCH IN ADVANCE!
Stephanie
p.s.: despite all the problems (mainly caused by outrageous client/marketing demands) nobody will ever get me hating on inDesign - just gotta looooove that program!

i ended up changing the system after talking to an adobe engineer as she told me that given the high page number and the awfully heigh number of buttons // links per page (from 10 up to 35) it seemed to be a problem for the program to process all that info. not because of the computers "strengths" but simply because of the complexity of the document.
now i ended up conserving only a few links and resolved the rest with "markers" (is it called like that in english? -> the ones that appear in the sidebar of the .pdf in acrobat and let you jump directly to the page to which they referr)
Thank you for all your support and quick answers (i didn't think it would be that inmediate!).
Definitely going to pay more attention to this forum and give a look around to see if i can help somebody too.
See you!
Steph
p.s.: i thought of that option, but at about 6-12 cross-document buttons per page in a document of 700... i didn't want to get into that mess. if the document weren't as complex it would have been the solution!

• InDesign or Lifecycle to Interactive PDF

I am new to InDesign and LyfeCycle
I have put together a PDF Form that is interactive with dynamic navigation menu buttons on a master but have run into several roadblocks.
1) While I can get the Acrobat 10 Form Wizard to work perfectly and recognize the placeholder fields when the PDF is only three pages, it stops recognizing the fields when the it has 28 pages.  I really dont want to have to add all the fields in on the Acrobat side. I tried layers and they didn't work.  The wizard only recognizes the navigational buttons but not of the fields.  We will be making frequent updates to this file and I dont want to draw 28 pages of radio boxes.
2) Is it possible to program the PDF so that when I select a particular item off a drop down, that it will show/hide defined pages based on the selection?  So if I select product a and c from the PDF drop down, only pages 5,6,7 and 12,13,14 show up in the PDF?  Everything I have been reading says probably not from InDesign.  Some discussions say it can be done in LifeCycle but then dont tell me how.
3) When I import the PDF into LifeCycle it loses the master design and the navigational buttons from InDesign.
4) Can I solve the problem with JavaScrip in Acrobat?  Do I have to use LifeCycle?  What doesn't LifeCycle import InDesigned Masters from PDF?
Any ideas?

When you choose to export the book out of the ID Book file, choose Interactive. The same settings come up as exporting the interactive PDF out of the individual ID file.

• Indesign CS6 not responding

I have CS6 design standard, indesign stopped responding earlier in the week, I can't remove it from the dock. I've uninstalled it and reinstalled it a number of times but it still won't open. I get messages saying "You can’t open the application “Adobe InDesign CS6” because it is not responding." and "The application “Adobe InDesign CS6” is not open anymore." when I try to open it. All the other applications are working fine. I have it on my laptop and there's no problem with it there. Obviously I'd rather work on my desktop than my laptop! Also I don't want to have to go down the route of downloading and paying for the CC version when I have the software.

I don't understand what that is. I can give you all the information regarding the computer/software. Why do you need crash logs? The application isn't crashing its not responding at all

• Indesign published site to Interactive PDF

Hi guys I wonder if anyone can help?
I have created a basic website for my dad, however, I want people to be able to click on the 'Click Here' BUTTON and it takes them to an interactive PDF document that they fill in their details onto.
You can see the site if it makes it easier at www.cheapaparcels.com (the site is ONLY aimed at a small community of people on Spain's Costa Blanca, so Iam not trying to get free publicity).
I have linked the button to the PDF (which is on my PC) but of course it does not work when uploaded.
Can anyone point me in the right direction as to how I achieve this?
Many thanks

Thank you Bob, easy when you know how!!

• Why is InDesign CS6 not in the list??

Hello,
i have bought Indesign CS6 on the adobe.com shop. But the serial number from the mail they send me isn't working.
When I use the serial number he says: The serial number you entered is valid but there is no qualifying product present on this computer (translated from dutch).
This is probably because I only can select cs5.5 in the list with products and no cs6. Why cs6 is not in the list? Even after several times  reinstall.
Help.....

It sounds like you purchased an upgrade.  You will first want to enter your CS6 serial number.  After which you will then be prompted to enter the serial number for your qualifying product.  At that time you will want to enter the serial number for the software which you are upgrading from.
