InDesign CS6 Spell Check

I cannot find a spell check anywhere in inDesign CS6. I have checked all drop down menus and sub menus and preferences and there is no mention of spell check anywhere.

Edit>spelling>check spelling .
Also check Edit>menus>edit>spelling, and make sure it may not turn off.
If the above not work try:

  • InDesign cs6 spell check and master pages

I have created a set of master pages for a template in InDesign cs6. When I create a document from this template and apply "spelling", the spell check goes through every master page before moving to the document. How can I stop spell check from going to master pages unless, of course, the master page is highlighted? I have tried locking all master page objects and have also tried selecting the option of not allowing selection of master page locked objects. I have allowed, and disallowed, the override on master page items Nothing seems to work. I would like "spelling" to apply only the pages in the document, or only the selected page in the document.

If you go to Edit>Spelling>Check Spelling
You get a dialog box - the only options are for All Documents, Current Document, Story, To End of Story, or Selection
These are the options for checking spelling, ignore masters is not an option, unfortunately.
But you can select a range of text and use the Selection option to check the spelling.
    Hope that helps.

  • InDesign CC - Spell check not working.

I can purposefully type a misspelled word in InDesign and the Spell Check doesn't catch it. In fact it doesn't seem to work at all.

    Hi
Could you please provide the following information which could help in reproducing the issue at my end.
    - Please provide screen shot of the dictionary preferences from following location.
       Mac : Indesign->Preferences->Dictionary
       Win : Edit->Preferences->Dictionary
    - Please confirm whether this issue is also happening with new documents? Can you attach an .indd document with some misspelled words which ID spell check is not able to find.
    - Do you have previous version of InDesign installed on your machine ? IF yes, can you tell me which all older version of InDesign are installed on your machine ?
    - Please confirm whether Spell check was working fine for you in previous version i.e. in Version 9.1 and issue started when you updated to latest version i.e. ID 9.2.
I really appreciate your cooperation on this.
    Thanks & Regards

  • InDesign CC - spell check doesn't work

In InDesign CC when I launch spell check it appears at the top of my screen overlapping the menu bar. If I keep hitting command-I it will find and highlight suspect words, but does not give me any option to change them. Also, the spell check menu will remain at the top of the screen until I quit out of the program. Any suggestions how I can fix this? Thanks!

  • InDesign's Spell Check causes recall of student newspaper at Brigham Young University

This is hysterical. And a great lesson to be learned.
    http://tinyurl.com/cd27ep

I agree. It's entirely up to the user to proof read any document going to press/print. Seriously, InDesign does not have predicative typing, predictive sentencing or predictive story, features that come installed like the new imac wheel does http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuVbrm_GqhM
Sure it has a spell checker that doesn't have all the words in the dictionary in there. It can highlight mispelt words and it can offer up suggestions. But it's the end user that has to read the article, highlight the error, select the right word and check that the sentence reads correctly before proceeding.
If anything this is just bad publicity for the University and shows how well they teach their young padawans. I've no sympathy for them.
Reminds me of a time a colleague used OCR when scanning a document and put the text straight into the layout. It got as far as press before someone noticed that the words were all messed up.
You have to take responsibility for your own actions and blaming someone or something else for your own mistakes is just unprofessional.
How people here used the spell checker on the forum when replying to this?

  • Indesign CC spell check

I am using indesign CC and when I spell check the document i am working on it indicates that pretty much every word is spelled incorrectly (the aren't) I have check and my dictionary is set to English, however the spell check window indicates that it is set to Tamil (India)

That is THE place you set the language, other than as part of a style definition. Many users are confused by the dictionary options in the application preferences. This does not select a default language or affect the text in any way, it's just where you get to choose which dictionary vendor will be used, when more than one is installed, to spell-check and hyphenate text to which that particular language has been assigned.
As a character-level attribute, you have the ability to assigne the correct language to every bit of text in the document, so if you are mixing in "foreign" words they will be spell-checked according to the correct dictionary.

  • InDesign CC spell check is not working at all

I have been using InDesign for around a month now and now my spell check is not working at all. I have tried replacing preferences, changed dictionaries, created new documents with placeholder text and spell check does nothing at all with all of these things. Please Help

Not all locales come with a dictionary installed for licensing reasons.<br />
If you do not have the en-US locale then check that you have a dictionary installed (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) and selected.<br />
    <br />
You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu.<br />
Also make sure that [X]"Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu has a tick.<br />
You can also try to toggle the "Check Spelling" item off and on again.<br />

  • InDesign CC spell check "ignore all" doesn't work

Is anyone having problems with "Ignore All" not working in spell check? I am repeatedly being prompted to check the same word or abbreviation again and again.
Just to be sure it wasn't a result of hidden characters or other variables, I have copied several text frames and spell check prompts for the same terms in both text frames even after clicking "ignore all" for each word the first time through.

I too started having this problem just this week.
I use ID to create user's manuals in which a product model number will show up at least 5 times per document. The "Ignore All" button in spell check has always ignored all instances of a product model number until now. I've noticed that "Ignore All" does not work on any repeated words in any of my documents. I'm not sure what has changed that caused "Ignore All" to stop working.

  • CS6 Spell Check flags every word.

    Hello,
My ID has recently started flagging every word when doing spell check. I uninstalled and reinstalled but it's still doing it. I have tried turning on and off preferences and selecting different vendor dictionaries but no luck. I have no clue how to create a new dictionary or to select a different one. If I try to "relink" the current one everything is grayed out. Please help! I'm spending so much time trying to research this and getting nowhere! Thanks!

This is a common point of confusion for many users (including me for a few years). The Dictionary settings in your presfs have nothing to do with spell checking directly. What they are is a means for you to choose which dictionary to use for each language, if more than one dictionary happens to be installed for that language. that dictionary is then used to decide if words are spelled correctly and to set hyphenation rules, but the language is actually set at the character level, as Manish mentioned above.
ID looks at the language assigned to the text, then uses the dictionary assigned by your prefs to do the checking. If the assigned language doesn't match the actual language, most words will inevitably be considered misspelled. If you, for example have an English localized version of ID, but mostly type in French, you probably would want to set French as the default language. To do that you would set it from the language dropdown in either the Character or Control panel with no files open, and it will be effective for all new work.
Existing files are more of a problem. You can reset the default for each document in the same way, but exiting text will retain whatever language is currently assigned, whether is it is correct or not. You can use Find/Change to reassign any language you like to the entire document on a language-by-language basis by choosing the language that is mis-assigned in the Advanced Character Formatting  section for the Find Format settings and then choosing the correct language in the Change Formatting section. For that you don't need to enter anything at all in either the find or change fileds in the dialog. Te assign a single language to all the text in a file, regardless of how many languages may be in use, enter .+ in the GREP find field, then set the language of your choice in the change Formatting as above. As long as something is entered into the Change Formatting section, you can leave the change field itself blank.  Although the text won't change when you reassign a language, if may reflow. This is due to different hyphenation rules among the various languages.
Though we often suggest replacing preferences here when things misbehave, this is one situation where it may actually make things worse. If you set a custom language different from your localization, resetting the prefs would remove that special language and you'll have to re-enter it manually.

  • CS6 Spell check error: The operation cannot complete because of an unknown error [CANT]

    Hi Everyone,
Has anyone else encountered this error when trying to spell check? Is there a way around it?

I had the same problem any time I tried to open .svg files. I resaved the files as .eps and they opened without issue.

  • Dreamweaver CS6 crashing on spell check of whole document, Windows 8.1

After using Dreamweaver CS6 happily for quite a while, it is now crashing regularly when I try to spell check more than a very short section.
I recently updated from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 and was prompted to update Dreamweaver afterwards, which I did.
The Windows log file shows that it is MSVCR100.dll that is the faulting module.

I used the command prompt window to check for file validity, sfc /scannow but it did not find any problems at all.
    What can I do now??

That seems to have worked. But I did not find files with the names you suggested.
I did find an article while searching for DW Cache that gave paths for a lot of different versions of Windows and of Dreamweaver, http://www.dmxzone.com/go/16740/clearing-dreamweaver-s-cache/
Using that I was able to select WinfileCache and delete it. On restarting Dreamweaver CS6, spell check seems to be working,
Thanks so much for the suggestion.
Now if I can just remember it the next time something messes up! :-)

  • Problem to install Indesign CS6,  "an error has occured during the extraction".

Hi, I downloaded it multiple times, did several attempts on different computers, I always got the same result: "An error has occured during the extraction. Download Indesign CS6 again"

    check your file sizes.
if they are correct, use a different browser.
if they are incorrect, use a wired or different connection.

  • Run-on spell check

Hi, I use InDesign CS5 to write technical manuals. I don’t know if it’s because they contain many charts, illustrations, etc., but every time I check spelling, the Spell Check feature jumps randomly through the document, rechecking the same pages over and over. It misses misspelled words, rechecks accepted ones and I usually just turn it off after the second or third pass of the title page. I’ve selected US English, researched your website and forums and can’t find any reference to this problem. Am I alone, or is there some way to make it search the document thoroughly, in order, once?
    Thanks,
    Larry

(I've moved your thread to the InDesign General forum. I've also locked your duplicate thread in the Forum Comments forum, which is only for administrative questions about the forum).

InDesign's spell-checking feature checks the document in order by text frame, each text frame in the order of creation. That means that it jumps around and may hit the same page more than once, but should not hit the same word or phrase or textframe more than once.
I filed a bug for this (#2911712) in July of 2011. If you choose to open a case with Adobe Support about it, citing that bug number might be helpful.
This is also a problem with Find/Change.

  • Indesign Spell Check plugin?

    Hi all,
Have browsed the web a bit but haven't come across quite what I'm after.
I'm looking for a spell check plugin for InDesign CS6 that gives a little more flexibility over what it's searching for. I want to be able to customize the search.
    For instance:
    -- don't lookup uncapitalized sentences
    -- don't lookup URLs
-- the ability to start and stop a search at the same point
-- sequential page spell check rather than random text boxes
I don't need vast databases of languages that some plugins provide, just a little better functionality. Any thoughts or plugins?
    Thanks!
    eu.

I am looking for the same thing. I can't understand why adobe doesn't supply a more robust spellchecker.

  • Adobe Flash Professional CS6, cant use spell checker, missing or not there

I am trying to use spell checker on Adobe Flash CS6, everywhere I look for help is very minimal. Most places just say click Text > then Check Spelling but I can't see this anywhere, I have found these instructions under Adobe CS6's Help but the Help on Adobe's website was brief an unhelpful.
I am unsure what is wrong mainly because of the minimal help I found on-line but as I said Check Spelling is not under Text and nowhere else as far as I can tell. Any advice would be helpful, I seem to remember having to add a Spell Check Dictionary manually on much older versions of Macromedia Flash is this the case here? If so why is it so hard to find help on this matter?
thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for the response but you have just told me the only piece of information I can find about this - its under Text. But like I said it isn't there, there's nothing to do with spelling at all within my Flash programme anywhere. I am using it on Windows 7 64-bit using Adobe Creative cloud on Adobe Flash Professional CS6 - Version 13.1.0.226
    Here is a screenshot
Also why is your answer marked as "Correct?" We have not resolved this issue so far.
